Issac startled at the banging on the door, then worried as the guard burst in.
"Everyone out and to the town center," the man shouted.
Issac's expression turned grim. The scene was suddenly turning all too familiar and for a brief moment he was taken back, this wasn't Ember's home, it was his, and he was eating with Bethan and Tess and then- but no, this wasn't his home, this wasn't his family as he trailed out the house after Brooke and Ember.
Out in the town center another familiar scene stood, but this one he'd seen over and over, every town he'd stopped in, every raid he'd fled. A young girl just come into her power as an Elemental, bound to a pole and terrified. He stood, trembling with fury as he watched the guard remove his sword from it's sheath.
He could do nothing. He could stay safe, keep his own ridiculous life and keep hidden. But that could have been Bethan up there. It could be Brooke, should she make one mistake. And his life didn't matter, not in a world where this was okay.
With as much power as he could muster he flung gusts at the nearest guards, throwing them back as he surged towards the pole. More guards filed towards him, and he flung winds as hard as he could, he punched and kicked anyone within reach, but there were too many, he was starting to get overwhelmed.
A shout from Ember had him spinning around in time to see a close call go up in flames, then Ember had grabbed the girl and was off, running. He started off after her and he shouted for her to keep going, or at least he hoped he did, he was winded from the fight and the smoke, but still he ran on.
Shouts and cries still came from behind him and he put the rest of his strength into tumbling a word down wooden shack with a poor excuse for a tornado. It blocked the path, and would give them a little extra time, but not all that much.
Ember was still going, clutching the girl as she ran, and he was afraid Ember would end up accidentally hurting the child. He pushed himself a few more steps until he was in front of her and stopped her. Ember didn't seem to know what she was doing, her eyes were blurred with tears. She set the girl down, then lent heavily against, clinging to his shirt. Her chest heaved as she struggled to catch her breath, and Issac wrapped a strong arm around her back to hold her safe and tight, bringing his other hand up to cup the back of her head, stroking her hair.
"Ember," he spoke softly into her ear. "Ember, we got away, but you need to calm down, we need to keep going."
