Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick and think of you.
Caught up in circles, Confusion is nothing new.

Roman Mitchell groggily rolled out of bed when his alarm started blaring at 5 AM. He had been out until almost one that night simply because of his second job catering, the party had gone on longer than he was told it would. Despite his protests he couldn't make it end any sooner. Roman got himself out of bed and was moving at a sloths pace as he showered, got dress, did his hair, made coffee, and finally drove to the school. He downed a couple aspirin with the second mug of coffee as he waited for his first period to start. His first period was a group of generally good seniors, however they all had senioritis and didn't want to work. Once the bell rang Roman moved so he was besides the door, greeting each of his students as he always did. He still had the coffee mug in his hand and would sip at it as he watched the seniors come in one by one. When he heard a voice Roman's head turned a bit. He put on a small smile and nodded at Corrie. "Good morning Miss Martin." He replied in a friendly tone. The late bell rang a few seconds after and Roman walked back to his desk, setting down the mug and picking up his copy of Animal Farm. "Alright how many of you actually did the reading?" He asked, irritated as to the fact that all year nearly none of them did. However Corrie always had. As his eyes landed on her he smiled ever so slightly, glad he had oat least one student willing to work in his class.

Roy didn't enjoy waking up an extra hour early before school every day. But he toughed it out for the sake of his little sister. As quietly as Roy could he would make her breakfast, get both of their things together, get his younger sister up and ready for the day, then get himself ready. Once their morning routine was done Roy would walk her to the elementary school, before heading off to the high school by himself. He hated school. Especially his first class had to be math. He couldn't understand math, he nearly always failed, and Roy was never awake enough to pay attention. Just as he arrived Roy headed to his class, he took his usually seat near the back, hanging his backpack up on it. He then pulled out a thick notebook from his bag and set it on his desk, and a pencil as well. His notebook was all drawing that he did during classes and on the few occasions he had free time. It was one thing Roy was good at and enjoyed. When Ms. Scott started class he only half listened, he already knew he failed the test. Roy began to draw in the notebook once more. This was the starting of a drawing with a little girl on a swing, and a boy behind her. But in front of them was something dark and indistinguishable.

Corrie new she looked like a mess when she walked into school. Her parents had been fighting all night and she had only gotten an hours sleep before her alarm had gone off. She considered herself lucky though, at least it was her mom he was fighting. He never hit her mom, most likely because he knew she could take him. Her curly blonde hair was tied up into a tight ponytail on her head, her dark roots coming in and making it known that she would have to re-dye her hair soon. Her sweatpants and baggy sweater didn't help her look either. It didn't matter of course, she had two best friends at this school, and everybody else she wasn't trying to impress. 'Well, that's not entirely true,' she thought as she walked into her first period English class and took a seat in the front row after saying hello to her teacher, Mr. Mitchell. She tried not to stare at him, he was so handsome it was hard not to stare. She reached into her bag and pulled out her copy of Animal Farm, which she had already read twice. Mr. Mitchell got up and began class, and she blushed furiously as his eyes fell on her after asking who did the reading. She was one of the few people who raised their hand. She heard some laughing in the back of the room. "Of course Corrie did, it's not like she has anything better to do," she heard Jessica Montgomery say, not too subtly, to her friend Kaite. She ignored them, she was used to jokes about her social standing.

Kenzie was at work early, correcting the latest math test she gave to her students. She understood that math was a hard subject for people, but this last one should have been relatively easy and yet quite a few kids had failed it. For most of them she assumed it was a fluke, they generally got at least C's, which in her book never concerned her. But there was one student she was beginning to worry about. Roy Mackerso had been struggling since the beginning of the year. He did well on the first review test, but after that his grades had been steadily declining. She may have just ignored it, but he always looked so sad in class. She smiled to him as he walked into class and took his usual seat in the back row. She decided that that was going to be the day that she talked to him. She was slightly distracted as she taught the class, noticing Roy drawing as usual in the back. When the final bell rang she waited for Roy to walk by her desk, and then gently tapped him on the arm. "Excuse me Roy, do you think you could stop by after school to talk with me for a couple minutes." She tried to look as non-threatening as possible as she waited for his response.

Roman was surprised, a few more students than usual had raised their hand. He turned to write on the board, before hearing Jessica make a comment. "Excuse me?" He said, turning around with a disappointed look on his face. Roman made his way down the aisle of desks until he reached Jessica. "Miss Montgomery, was there a need for that comment? Did you read like you were supposed to?" He asked, but before giving Hera chance to answer he turned around and back towards his desk. "Because of that comment I guess I'll be giving A pop quiz today." He heard the groans of most of the class. "Don't blame me,blame your classmate." He said as he passed out the quizzes. They were very easily had you read the book. Quizzes counted as 20% in his class, tests 30%, projects/essays 25%, participation 10% and homework was 15%. As he handed it out Roman left the empty desk in front of the class for the, to pass the finished quiz in on. He went and sat down at his own desk and began to correct essays he had given earlier that month. He looked up and looked at Corrie, a small smile on his face once again. He didn't know why, but he really enjoyed her. She was also very pretty.

Roy had finished his drawing by the time the 90 minute block was over. He gathered up his stuff, carefully putting his notebook into his backpack. He slung the bag over his shoulder and made his way towards their. When Ms. Scott tapped his arm he turned to look at her. Frowning as she asked, he knew he couldn't. He had to get to the elementary school so he was able to walk his sister home. "I can't. I have places to be." He said quickly before hurrying out of the classroom to avoid anymore talking. Roy went through the day lazily. Until the last block of the day, he had art which he loved. He went and begun a painting that he had been planning for months. His art teacher loved it, and loved Roy.

Corrie felt herself blush furiously when Mr. Mitchell called called Jessica out on what she said. She had mixed emotions about it. Part of her was thrilled that a teacher actually cared enough to put one of her bullies in their place. The other part of her was mortified that this could just leave to further taunting. This fear grew worse when he assigned them all a pop quiz. She knew for a fact that she would get a perfect score, but she could already feel the people behind her glaring at her. She took the quiz when it was handed to her and scanned the questions. In a matter of minutes she was done and flipped the paper over. She looked up and caught Mr. Mitchell looking at her. She wasn't sure why he was staring at her. 'Maybe it's cause he pity's you,' she thought to herself. She mustered a small smile and looked down at the blank side of the paper.

    __

Kenzie's face fell as he rejected seeing her after school. She knew she had to find a chance to talk to him and make sure he was doing alright. Her sixth sense for these things told her that something was going on at home and him brushing her off made her even more certain. She tried to protest as he walked away, but he was gone before she could get more than a word out. She decided that the next day she would try to talk to him again. She didn't know why she felt so determined, but she did. The rest of the day was uneventful. She taught all of her classes, and when she was done she decided to stay in her office for a little while, grading papers.

As the students brought up the finished quizzes, Roman begun to grade them then. He had done it just to get someone to stop being rude, so he wasn't going to take a long time grading it. When they were all done and he was done grading them he handed back the quizzes, pausing a moment as he handed Corrie's back to her. He bit his lip before carrying on. Roman had been divorced for five years, and since then he hadn't had any girlfriend or anything. They had been married since he was 22. So he was used to his wife. But he had had Corrie for two classes now and for some reason he was getting attached to her, and he was having thoughts no teacher should have. Knce the quizzes were handed back he went up in front and begun his lecture on the symbols in the book.

After school Roy hurried to the elementary school, he picked his little sister up, and took her hand as they walked back to the house. When he got him he could already tell that his father had been drinking. Their mother left when his little sister was three months old, and since his father's drinking had gotten worse and worse. His father begun to yell at the little girl, for nothingn, Roy got in between them, yelling back at his father, as the sister ran off to her room. He and his dad fought hard when they did, which usually ended with Roy smacked or beat. This time he just got a sucker punch to the eye and was sent to his room. Roy furiously went off to bed, waiting for morning when the same thing would repeat tomorrow

Corrie distracted herself by reading her current book The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wide as Mr. Mitchell corrected the quizzes. She was happy to see that she got a perfect score on the quiz when it was handed back, but judging by all of the groans and dirty looks in her direction, not everybody had such good luck. She was glad she had the rest of the class period to distract her, there was something so comforting to her talking about books and symbols. Plus, she didn't know why, but she felt safe in Mr. Mitchell's class. With him there at least people didn't pick on her as much. Just when she was really getting into the lecture, the bell rang. She sighed, and began to pack up her things. 'Time to face my doom' she thought to herself.

    xx

When Kenzie was finished grading her papers she packed up, resigning herself to the fact that no students were going to come visit her. She came home to a pissed off boyfriend, he hated it when she worked late. "I'm fucking starving, what did you expect me to eat?" he groaned from the couch, watching some soccer match on the television. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes, she spent a lot of time questioning why they were still together. Most of the time he was angry and demanding. She ordered a pizza, and read a book while Tom (her boyfriend) watched tv, and ate more than half the box of pizza. Then she put on her pj's and went to bed, ready for the next day. Most of the time she preferred working because her home life was so uneventful.

Roman finished up his lesson for the day on the book, then assigned the reading for the next day, even though he knew by everyone would donit yet again. "Alright class, have a good day, I'll see you all tomorrow." He said as the bell rang the dismiss the class and he went to stand at the door and watched as his students left. When Corrine passed by he said her name wuietly, then gently touched her wrist with his hand. "Thank you for being such a good student, don't hesitate if you need anything, reccommdstion letter, homework help, other things." He said and paused waiting for the rest of the class to leave. "Students like you are rare. So thank you." He said smiling.

Roy woke up early this morning. He decided to make breakfast for he, his sister, and father. He made eggs, bacon, and toast. Once his sister was up she fed her and got her ready for school. When they were ready he made a plate up for his father with a note on top that read love you dad, see you after school, hope it's made the way you like it. Roy then headed off towards school. He dropped his sister off and kissed her head telling her their plan for the day. He then went off to the high school. Starting his routine with his math class once again. He sat down and stretched in the chair before realizing he had forgotten to cover up the bruise he had over his face and eye. He sighed and buried his head in his drawing notebook as he worked on the same one as yesterday.

Corrie was ready to bolt out of the door when she felt a hand touch her wrist. She stopped, and instantly started to blush when she saw it was Mr. Mitchell's hand. She blushed harder after hearing what he said. She was touched that a professor actually enjoyed having her as a student, usually teachers just didn't even seem to notice her. It was especially touching coming from her favorite teacher. "Th...thanks so much. I really appreciate it sir," she said, trying to suppress the grin from appearing on her face. "I'll definitely let you know," she said, pulling a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. Not wanting to stick around an awkward amount of time, she looked at the floor and moved on to her next class. Chemistry. Her worst subject.

    xx

Kenzie showed up to school early, and went through her lesson plan for the day. She double-checked example equations and their answers, and then wrote the first few review questions onto the board. She was hoping some review would help certain students who were struggling. Eventually students began filing in and she returned to her desk, keeping herself busy so not to stare. She couldn't help book looking up as Roy walked in and took a seat at his desk. She frowned. There was something not quite right about his face today. She suppressed a gasp when she realized that what it was was a huge bruise over his face. She shook her head, almost shaking with anger. She had a pretty strong hunch that something was going on at home. She decided today she was not giving him the choice but to talk to her after class. "Okay class, let's begin," she said, trying her best to act as if all were normal.

Roman smiled down at Corrie, he made a mental note of the blush that adorned her face, blushing as well. "You're very welcome." He said quietly. "Have a good day Corrie." He said as he watched her off in the hall, and stood outside his door as the other students began to pile into his class for the next block. He couldn't keep his mind off of her. Maybe it was the fact he had been single for years after his divorce, maybe he really genuinely liked this girl. But Roman didn't want to push anything that wasn't there because his job was on the line. As he taught his next classes in free time he would ponder the likes of everything with Corrie.

Roy grumbled to himself for a few minutes, scolding himself for not covering his bruise up. But when Ms. Scott begun teaching he shut himself up and glanced up at the lesson. But once again continued on his drawing. He finished that one half way thru the class. He then turned to another page and begun to work on a rose, he didn't have any color pencils, so he just made sure that the details and shading were there so it was clear what it was. He grinned softly and hid Ms. Scott's name into the folds on the petals. When he finished that drawing he signed his name to it. Just as the bell was ringing. He got up and grabbed his backpack. He tore the rose from the notebook and headed towards the door. When he got to her desk, Roy discreetly left the drawing in her desk before trying to leave the class once again.
