The sun was scoring hot, a fact that made a lot of the people on the base uncomfortable. In one corner cleaning a rifle on an old wooden table, sat a soldier who didn't seem to mind the heat one bit. The soldier still dirty and dusty, with a long unkempt beard had just come back from the desert. His team had been in the field for three months, but unlike the other members of the team, who couldn't wait to get off the base and head home to their families. This soldier sat cleaning his rifle, seemingly not in a rush to go anywhere.

Mitch had only been back State side a few days, he was keen to go back to the desert. He had been bugging his superiors to put him on a plane as soon as possible. Although aware of his record, and his expertise, they were wary of sending him back, they had received reports that Mitch had been taking unnecessary risks, and had been behaving strangely. They had called in someone to evaluate his mental health, to clear him for combat as soon as possible. They needed killers like Mitch out in the field, but had to follow protocol and have him assessed, after so many reports from other soldiers.

Mitch reassembled his rifle, and placed it on the table in front of him. He then moved on to cleaning his secondary weapon. If any of the other soldiers around had been paying attention they would of been aware that this was probably the fiftieth time the unkempt soldier had cleaned and serviced his weapon. Mitch very clearly had something nagging at him, that he was trying to keep from thinking about.

Abby walked towards the man that had been cleaning his weapons for the last twenty minutes. She had been sent to evaluate him and she had been watching him from afar. He seemed really trouble and she was told that he was bad at opening up to people. Abby bit her bottom lip lightly before she walked over to him, "Mitch Dalton?" She asked, smiling as he looked up at her. "Hi, I'm Abby Fischer." She said, offering him her hand. Abby sat next to him on the bench, "I am the therapist that they wanted you to talk to." She explained. "Did you want to go somewhere more private or do you prefer to speak out here?" She asked him. She wanted to make sure that he was in a comfortable place that he wanted to be in. Abby ran her fingers through her hair, watching him. She could tell by the way he glanced around and his hands shook that he was a nervous individual.

Mitch cocked the slide of his pistol back, popping the round in the chamber out. It sprung up and he caught it. He placed the bullet onto the table, along with the pistol, almost punctuating the pause to his cleaning. He looked at her out of the corner of his eye. A brief moment of recognition flashed across his face, before disappearing. It was like for a moment he thought he recognised her, but that sensation quickly faded.

He sat back, "So you're the one that has to say whether I can go back out there?" he finally asked in a hoarse tone. He looked about the scene evaluating whether they had sufficient privacy where they were currently sitting. He came to the conclusion that it would probably be fine. "Here is fine, what do you need to know?" he asked her.

Abby smiled at him, "Well, first why don't you tell me a little about yourself." She said. She listened to him rattle off his rank and she ahook her head. "You wanna tell me something about yourself that doesn't involve guns or your ranming?" She asked, laughing softly. She could tell her waa hiding something under the surface. "Tell me about your family." She said as she let her hands rest on her lap. She didn't like to carry about a notepad because she felt like it made her less approachable. She seen something in his eyes when she mentioned his family. "Is something wrong?" She asked him. Abby knew that everyone was counting on her to clear him, but she wasn't sure about that yet.

The change in the line of questioning, noticeably had a detrimental effect on Mitch's mood. He was open to questions, answering promptly and honestly, until she asked about family. He shut down. Not six months ago, the topic would of elicited happiness and joviale responses, Mitch used to love talking about about his black haired and beautifully blue eyed wife. They had been so happy together, for the short time they got to spend together, it had always pained him to be away from her.

This bluntness and hint of sadness, however wasn't merely from being away from the love of his life. No this was deeper, more profound. After a few moments he finally answered her, "Don't have any family," he stated painfully. He went back to cleaning his weapon, hoping she'd change the subject.

Abby looked at him when he started to shut down. "No family? No parents, siblings, or cousins?" She asked. She found it weird that he had nobody, but maybe he decided to cut those people from his life. She had heard about his wife, but she was worried that if she brought the woman up that he much shut down on her. She bit her bottom lip lightly, "Well, what can you tell me about you?" She asked. "Any hobbies that don't involve being here?" She asked. She was going into the hard questions, but she wanted him more relaxed before she did that. Abby listened to him then looked at him, "Do you wanna talk about that village a week ago?" She asked. She had heard it was an ambush that caused a lot of civilians to die. Once specifically being a family that the soldiers had gotten close with over time.

Mitch looked up from his gun, slowly rejoining the conversation. He knew that he had to answer these questions, if he didn't he wouldn't be cleared to go back. That was what he wanted desperately, what did he have left here?
He paused, "You mean the one where those filthy bastards blew up the school with a rocket launcher?" he stated plainly. "do you want to discuss before or after I found children we used to play soccer with in pieces charred beyond recognition?" he added. This was one of those incidents he'd been reported for, after finding the bodies, Mitch left his post, with his team, and hunted down those responsible.

Abby looked at him as he talked about what happened, "Is that what you want to talk about?" She asked. Abby bit her bottom lip lightly, "I am here to talk about whatever you want." She said. "It doesn't have to be about the war if you don't want it to be." She explained. She just wanted him to open up about something. "However, will we eventually have to talk about that because if we don't I can't clear you to go back to combat." She explained. "I am wondering though, why did you abandon your post to hunt those people down?" She asked.

This topic clearly irritated Mitch, "We couldn't let them get away with killing kids, and blowing up a school," he commented bluntly. He leant in slightly, "we got ordered to stand down and just go back to our safehouse, let the locals handle it," he whispered. "Personally I can't abide child killers, it wasn't like those kids were providing intel, or posed a threat to those filthy no-good assholes, they just kicked the ball around with us," he added. It was clear he was over justifying why he left the post and disobeyed orders, like he was anticipating needing the explanation for her next question.

Mitch's team had supported his dismissal of the orders, they were all for hunting down the fighters. What worried them is what happened after they found them.

Abby stared at him, "What happened when you found them? I can't imagine it went well, seeing as they took you out of the field." She explained. She could tell he was angry. She didn't like the idea of him being so impulsive. "I don't know if you know this, but people around here don't like people that act on a whim." She said, smiling a little. He was lucky they didn't send him home. They needed him though. Abby ran her fingers through her hair, "Why don't we take a walk?" She asked, standing. "Leave the weapons." She said, seeing him going to reach for them. "We aren't going far." She assured him.

Mitch looked at her about to protest, but again that hint of recognition caused him to back down. He stood slowly, "they want me because I'm impulsive, think outside the box," he commented, it was true, that was one of the reasons the superiors valued him. He got results, and used to, until this deployment at least, get the task done professionally and with minimal bloodshed.

He looked at her, unsure whether he should tell her what happened or not. "lets just say I placed my shots to punish, not kill, the cause of death for the main culprits was close combat," he said. He was under playing it, a lot. He had basically shot the two leaders hands off, then walked in and tortured them both. By the end of it all he was covered in blood, and almost rabid.

Abby looked at him as they walked, "You wanna tell me some more about that?" She asked. She knew the details were probably gory, but she needed to know what he had seen and what he had done. People were saying that he was slightly crazy since he hurt those leaders. She ran her fingers through her hair, "Would you be upset if they sent you home?" She asked. She wondered how well he would adapt to being back at home. Abby wasn't sure if he would be able to go back to civilian life without some counseling. Abby walked with him, feeling the wind on her skin. "So do you talk to your parents?" She asked. She wasn't sure if his parents were still alive, but she was curious.

Mitch looked at her, 'I'm sure you've been told some of the details already," he said trying to change the topic. He stopped moving when she mentioned sending him home, "War is my home now, there's nothing left for me anywhere else," he said matter of factually. He stayed on the same spot, 'My parents died, I heard about it after I got back the first time," he said. It was the sad truth that pretty much everyone he had cared about died while he was fighting this same war, that had been raging for years. The first time the superiors kept it from him until he got back, thinking it would effect his performance, but with his wife they told him while he was still over there, on a break day.

    [That's okay!]

Abby looked at him, "Well you do know that some day this war will end and you will have to go home right?" She said. She didn't like that he had a fear of leaving. She stood in front of him, "You can't depend on being here." She said. He appeared to be using the war as a crutch for the things that were going wrong in his life. "I am sorry about your parents." she said. It wasn't easy to lose someone. She bit her bottom lip lightly, "Tell me about your wife." She said, watching his posture change. Abby crossed her arms, waiting for him to talk. She wasn't going to let him tip toe around her like he did everyone else. "You can tell me anything you want. I won't tell anyone." She explained.

Mitch looked at her, the pain of this topic clearly hanging around him. He stared into her, trying to gauge whether she would handle it. It was hard to look at her and not see his wife. "She was amazing, she brought me to earth, gave me something to live for," he began. "She was a lot like you, fearsome and demanding but in a good way, she made me open up," he added. He told her how his wife, looked a lot like herself as well. He was trying to keep to the good side of it. "But that's all gone now," he said.

Abby looked at him, "Well, what happened to her?" She asked. She could tell that he really missed his wife, "Where you there when she passed?" She asked. She was surprised to hear that he wasn't around. she knew that it had to be terrible to think about his wife dying alone. Abby ran her fingers through her hair, "So what else can you tell me about you?" She asked. "Perhaps something less morbid." she said, smiling a little. She knew that he had to have something that wasn't completely gloomy. "Any hobbies?" She asked, looking around them for a moment. They were pretty far from the rest of the troops, but she was still nervous. Abby didn't like being in a war zone but she wanted to help people like Mitch. "Can I tell you something about my family?" She asked him. She watched as he nodded, "I do my job so I can help soldiers like you and ones coming back home." She explained this. "My brother killed himself when he came back from a war zone when i was twenty-one." she explained.

Mitch nodded lightly, understanding her motivations. He had just let her talk for the last little while, not really responding to her questions. "She was murdered, in a carjacking, I was supposed to have been home, but my deployment was extended a month because some jackass cake-eater sent an undertrained unit into a contested zone, and they got pinned down in an ambush,' he began explaining. "So we were held back and sent in to rescue them, while I was solving the mistake of some pencil pushing good for nothing jackass, when I was supposed to be home with my wife, she was killed," he said lightly. The story explained why Mitch no-longer held much stock in the commands of non-combat experienced superiors, and had been making more calls on his own.

He clearly was feeling something for Abby, otherwise he wouldn't of been answering so truthfully. He had initially intended to give her the right answers, the ones that would clear him, that's what the cake-eaters wanted.

Abby listened to him explain about what happened to his wife. It was awful to think about him finding out about such a horrible thing while he was over here. "Did they let you go home when it happened?" She asked. She knew sometimes they did and sometimes they were assholes and didn't allow it. She could tell that Mitch had a lot of unresolved issues. Abby hated that she couldn't just take people's pain away. "You know you never answered my question." She said, smiling. "You never told me about your hobbies and don't say killing people and shooting guns." She said, smirking slightly as she walked with him. As much pain that Mitch was in, Abby still felt comfortable around him. She wished should could make him feel a little happier.

Mitch sighed softly, "no, they kept us for full debriefing and everything," he said annoyed. He walked with her, his ears listening carefully to the gunshots in the distance. "How about Shooting people, and cleaning guns?" he said jokingly. He thought for a moment, "no hobbies, not really anymore, we used to do things, but it all just hurts to much now," he admitted.
