Vanessa sighed as she got out of bed on the first day of her senior year of high school. She dreaded school, ever since she was in elementary. The kids had always made fun of her because of a condition she had; heterocromia, where her left eye was brown and her right eye was blue. Only a few select people thought it was cool, everyone else called her a freak.

On top of that she was a chubby kid so if they weren’t teasing her about her eyes, it was about her weight and in seventh grade it was about her braces. She had never really been close to anyone except a small group of boys that she had met in the third grade.

They were her best friends and always stuck up for her whenever she would get picked on, or at least they did until they all got girlfriends in the ninth grade. She would still talk and hang out with them but it was always awkward because their girlfriends would hang all over them.

Vanessa hadn’t hung out with her friends all summer and instead she focused on herself and losing the last bit of baby fat she had, so she had gotten hot over the summer. Now the only thing kids could make fun of her for was her eyes.

She sighed as she finished her shower before going back to her room to get dressed.

Jorel sighed as he finished his shower and went back to his room to get dressed. He pulled on his black jeans, a random black band tee and his shoes. He grabbed his phone to text his girlfriend Hazel, letting her know he’d be by to pick her up in ten minutes.

He threw a SnapBack on and grabbed his backpack and car keys before heading downstairs and out the door. The only thing he looked forward to this year was spending more time with his hot ass girlfriend and his friends.

Hazel smiled seeing the text from Jorel, finishing her hair, she grabbed her bag and ran down stairs. She was ready for school to start and even more ready for Senior year to be over.

Seeing Jorel pull up outside, she walked out the door and got in his car, “Hey, don’t you look fine, who are you trying to impress?” She laughed, teasing him.

The last thing George wanted to do was go to school, the last few weeks of vacation had been absolute hell. He had done nothing, but argue with his girlfriend and now she hadn’t said a word to him in two days. It wasn’t unusual for them not to talk, but considering the last thing he had told her was to grow up or fuck off, he was worried.

George decided to wait it out and see how she would be at school, he was almost certain she would act like her normal self. Grabbing his keys, he walked out the door and drove to school.

“You of course.” Jorel smirked, leaning over to kiss her. “Ready for hell?” He asked with a smirk as he pulled away from her curb and headed towards school.

Vanessa arrived at school and sat in her car for a few more minutes so she could finish her cigarette. She finally sighed and got out, stomping her cigarette out as she walked over to the picnic table under the huge willow tree where her and her friends had been meeting up before school for the last four years.

Hazel grinned, “Nope, but st least you’ll make it bearable.” She said as he drove. Once they parked, she got out and waited for him, “Going to the normal spot?” She asked as they started walking over to the picnic table.

George parked his car and finished his cigarette before getting out and walked to the willow tree. He noticed Jorel and Hazel making there way over. His eyes landed on the girl already there and he took a moment to realize it was Vanessa. As he got closer he put on a smile, “There you are, thought you fell off the earth after school ended last year.”

“Of course.” Jorel said. He spotted Vanessa and had to do a double take because he almost didn’t recognize her. “Hey V, I almost didn’t recognize you.” He said as he and Hazel sat down. “What’s up fool?” He greeted George.

“Nope, just got super busy is all.” Vanessa told George and then looked over as Jorel and Hazel arrived. “Yeah, I lost weight.” She said. Soon the rest of the guys and their girlfriends showed up and George’s girlfriend was the last to arrive. Vanessa wondered what happened because usually George and Amber arrive together like the rest of them.

“You look great,” Hazel added, looking her over. She wasn’t surprised to see Amber arrive without George as she sat down next to Jorel.

George nodded as he looked at Vanessa, “You look real good.” He smiled slightly, it faded a bit when he saw Amber and realized the looks he was getting from a few of the members of their group. Sighing, he walked over to her and lead her away from the others, just far enough so they couldn’t eavesdrop as the two spoke.

“Thanks,” Vanessa said to Hazel. “So what’d you do this summer besides the total transformation?” Dylan asked her. She had gotten so hot but he knew if he said something along those lines, Meilani would flip. It took them all a lot of convincing to get their girlfriends used to Vanessa always being around.

“Nothing really...my parents finally got a divorce after putting it off for two years. Mom is currently on vacation in Cabo with the twenty seven year old she’s engaged too.” Vanessa said with a shrug.

“Damn dude, really? I mean, it was obvious that it was going to happen but I honestly didn’t think it would happen this soon.” Jorel said. “Yeah same but whatever makes them happy, I guess.” Vanessa said.

George was irritated by the time they stopped arguing, he turned and walked back to the table. He was going to keep his distance from Amber until things cooled off.

Hazel stayed next to Jorel, just listening as they all talked. It didn’t bother her that Jorel was friends with Vanessa, she wasn’t like the other girlfriends, jealous or always thinking something was going on.

“So what’s going on with you and Amber?” Jordon asked George with a smirk when he saw that Amber didn’t come with him.

Vanessa stopped talking when George came back. She usually stayed out of the guys arguments with their girlfriends. She pulled out her notebook and started doodling.

George rolled his eyes, “I don’t fucking know anymore, she hasn’t talked to me in days and now she just wants to argue, I’m over it.” He huffed, not even looking at Amber.

Hazel nudged Jorel with her elbow when he asked George about Amber, “Be Nice Jay...”

“Maybe you guys need to take a break.” Jorel said, seeing the rest of the guys agree. “Vanessa, what do you think?”

Vanessa looked up. “Oh um I don’t know...I kind of agree with Jay, maybe you guys need to take a break for a while.” She said. She didn’t understand this whole relationship thing. She had never had a boyfriend.

“It might happen at this rate, I don’t know what her problem is lately but it’s getting on my damn nerves,” George said. He listened to his friends, “Maybe you guys are right.”

Hazel nodded, “It might actually help, if you guys are supposed to be together maybe a little absence makes the heart grow fonder.” She laughed softly, “But honestly, consider it.”

Jorel nodded, “Hazel’s right, it happens to the best of us. Hell, we had to take a break from each other and now we hardly fight.” He explained.

Vanessa didn’t say anything and was actually happy when the first warning bell, signaling they had ten minutes to get to class. Her friends groaned as they got up and said goodbye to their girlfriends. Vanessa packed her things up and slung her bag over her shoulder as she walked inside with them.

Hearing the bell, Hazel sighed and kissed Jorel before walking off to her first class.

George was going to give their suggestions a real amount of thought. He knew Jorel would have a good idea of what might work. “I’ll talk with Amber later,” George told him, “I mean, you and Hazel have been together longest out of all of us....it should work....”

“Yeah, sometimes you just got to take breaks from your girl.” Jorel said as they walked to their lockers. “I’m sure it will all work out in the end.”

Vanessa went to her locker and put her bag in it before grabbing her stuff for her first class and heading towards it.

George sighed, “I hope so, otherwise I think I’m going to be single.” He laughed slightly, “Vanessa really lost the weight huh?” He looked at Jorel, “That’s shh she wasn’t wanting to hangout with us.”

Jorel nodded, “she looks good. That and she said her parents finally got the divorce, so I’m sure she was dealing with that...we also kind of weren’t good friends, we kind of blew her off to spend time with our girlfriends.” Jorel said and frowned, “now that I think about it, I feel kind of bad.” He sighed.

Vanessa walked up to George and Jorel. “Hey guys, sorry to interrupt but could one of you walk me to my first class?” She asked quietly. “The football players are already starting to pick on me..” she said, looking down at the ground.

Hearing Vanessa, George nodded, grabbing his stuff, “Its no problem, come on.” He smiled, “They won’t bother you with me, we already know that.” He said as they started walking.

Vanessa smiled. “Thank you George. How was the rest of your summer?” She asked him as they walked. She could already hear the popular kids whispering about her but she tried to ignore it.
