All I Need Is Time. [closed]

Cali gave a polite smile toward the guard at the entrance of the prison, flashing her ID as they waved her through. Fresh faced from completing her doctorate in Criminal Psychology, Caroline was looking forward to her second week as the in house psychologist for Stonewell Prison. While last week had been tough on both her mental and physical psych, Cali was still excited at the thought of being able to make a difference to at least some of these inmates lives. It was clear from the way many of the guards treated her in her time there, that they clearly thought she was some idealised barbie who had watched one too many inspirational lifetime movies and thought she could save the world.

"So George, who's up first?" She asked the Warden as he handed over her files for today, her chirpiness clearly irritating him. She pulled the first file off of the pile and sighed lightly as she read through it. Double homicide and sever priors, it was one way to keep her on her toes on a Monday morning. As the in house psychologist, it was her job to evaluate each and every inmate and then make the call as to who she felt needed primary attention and who were those that need only check in once a month. So far, there had only been one case who she felt needed some serious attention, and even at that she was sceptical that he was trying to work an insanity plea. She sashayed in to her office, the grey pencil skirt she wore clinging to her curves as she moved, she was yet to learn what not to wear infront of a large group of men, where many have not seen, never mind spoken to a woman in several years.

Cali settled down at her desk, getting her papers in order before her as she signalled for the guards to bring him in. She took a few deep breaths as she waited, painting a large smile on her face as she stood to greet the inmate. In her mind, she saw this man as true scum of the earth. To have committed 2 murders as well as having been active in the prison system from the age of 13, Caroline was sure there was no hope for him. No amount of her help could make this man less evil. However, to be professional she could not allow that to shine through. Raising her head to look at the man, she could feel her heart racing in her chest. "Hello Daniel, Dr.Caroline Sinclaire, please take a seat" she told him, keeping her hands firmly at her side. she had learnt the hard way on er first day that offering a Handshake was not a great idea.
"So tell me a bit about yourself that I can't read in your prison records".

Danny had spent his whole life in prison. Well at least that was what it felt like. He was once again in jail awaiting his trial. They were trying to get him for murder, but he pleaded not guilty. Danny sat in his cell in the SHU unit. He had been placed there because he was seen as a threat to everyone. Danny looked over as the guards arrived and he let them handcuff him. He was escorted by two guards because he needed people to watch him.

He walked into the office of the new psychiatrist and smirked. She was a lot better looking than the last one. He was pretty sure his name was Dr. Larson or some shit like that. He watched as she got to her feet, noticing she was afraid. He was really good at reading people's body language. He sat in front of her his handcuffed hands resting on her desk. "First of all you can call me Danny." He said. He hated the name Daniel. It made him think of his horrible mother who called him that to scold him. Until he was taken away and shoved into foster care. "Caroline is a very beauitiful name. What made you want to work in a shit hole like this?" He asked her. He was beginning to weave his giant web now. He liked to talk circles around people and ask them questions. He complimented people because it tricked them into thinking they meant something to him. His eyes went to the bracelet on her wrist, "I bet your mother got you that. For graduating or some shit." He said. "It looks nice on you." He said.

Cali's smile tightened as she returned to her seat. She kept her hands close to her as she wrote his name atop her notepad to take personal notes, trying to keep eye contact with him as much as she could. She felt intimidated, this man was easily twice her size, and one of his arms was covered in tattoos, many she recognised to be Gang symbols.

"Dr. Sinclaire is fine Danny, and I'm hear because I need the money" she said shortly, pursing her lips as she began to scribble some notes on to the paper. She had to admit he was handsome, and it would be easy to be mislead by his compliments. Cali just continually reminded herslef that he had committed two very violent murders, and murderers comments don't stand for much. she sighed, her hand moving to her bracelet defensively as he mentioned it, pushing it farther up her wrsit so it was concealed by the sleeve of her jacket. "My sister actually, for being in her wedding, but good guess, my mother gave me a watch" she commented flatly raising an eyebrow in his direction.

"So Daniel, your file here, it says you were taken in to care in June 1997, and your first arrest was 4 months later in October. Is that correct? what do you think may have been the cause of that? she questioned him, gazing directly in to his eyes, her arms crossed at the wrists on th edesk before her. She was used to the criminals not answering her direct questions, but often their evasion methods could tell her even more about their personal character. Some got immediately defensive, others turned to anger, while many just lied. She wondered which path Mr.Jackson would take. "Did you feel cared for in your foster home Danny?" her head cocked to the side as she awaited his reply.

Daniel frowned as she declined his compliments. He smirked, "Everyone does everything for money." He commented. He chuckled when she mentioned his first arrest, "That was just petty theft from a local cas station." He said. "I just wasn't sly enough to get away with it." He said. Daniel shrugged when she mentioned his foster home, "That depends. Do you consider daily beatings good care?" He asked, smiling. "If you then yes I was well cared for." He said. Danny leaned back in his chair, "What is your family like?" He asked. "I bet you have a nice family. Your parents probably really care about you. I bet your mom calls you every night to ask about your day." He said.

Daniel looked at his hands then looked at her, "You are scared of me because you think I murdered those people. I didn't do that." He said, shaking his head. "Hence why i pleaded not guilty. I take responsibiltiy for my actions." He said. "Is that why you are afraid Caroline?" He asked.

Cali clucked her tongue as she sat back in her chair, taking the notepad with her. "I mean still, Petty theft at what? 11? I'm not great at working out the math between the years. That's still very young to be having run ins with the law. Can you tell me more? at what age did you really start deviating from the social system?" she asked, testing him. She liked to word her questions carefully, many inmates who wished to be viewed as mentally unstable would often use words from her questions they thought were important to get her attention. She winced as he brought up beatings and scribbled it on to her sheet, the american system truly was fucked up. "Yeah my family are great, she calls at least once a week, if not twice. would you like that Danny? somebody to call and check up on you now and again?"

She cleared her throat and sat forward again as he addressed her wariness of him, she needed to establish some dominance before this went south. "Well Daniel, my job is not to establish your status of guilt, I'm merely here to ensure the prison that you are of sound mental health and do not belong in a psych ward. I'm not afraid of you Daniel, because unlike you I get to walk out those front doors each evening, with the security of knowing that each of you that I speak to is safely locked away and of no threat to me or anybody else." she told him coldly, standing up to look down on him, hoping the desk did enough to hide her shaking legs in her heels. "Say Danny, if I told you right now I could give you a pass to walk right out those doors and ino the world. where would you go? what would you do? don't think about money or any limitations really, just whatever you have always wanted". She wasn't getting much fromhim by way of his past, he seemed honest, his information matched the files... a story all to common among the many prisoners here.

Realising she had been avoiding his gaze, she managed to bring her attentionn back up to his face. were those the eyes of a killer?

Danny thought about her questions, "I spent my first year in jail at fifteen. I joined a gang while i was in." He explained. He shook his head when she mentioned someone calling. "I don't need someone to check up on me. I take care of myself." He said, stubbornly. "If you need someone to help you in your life then you are doing something wrong." He said.

He frowned when she talked about leaving the jail. He laughed at her, "Sweet sweet Caroline. How do you think people end up here?" He asked her. "They get here by hurting people like you." He answered his own question. He looked up at her as she stood up, "I'd go right back to my gang and live my life. Then i would end up here again." He said. He looked into her eyes, "Unless you'd want me to come visit you first and take you out." He said, leaning closer to her, though the table kept them far enough.

"Let me ask you a question, if you had to kill someone and you had no choice in the matter, would you?" He asked. "If it was between killing a scumbag from this prison or someone you love getting killed what would you do?" He asked again. He smirked at her answer, "I'd take a bullet from you any day sweet heart." He teased her. He frowned when he heard the guard beat on the door. He knew they heard his advances, "Calm your tits officer it ain't like i told her to suck my dick!" He snapped at the guy looking through the window.

Cali shook her head gently at him. "I think you misunderstood my question, I asked when you were first arrested, maybe even just picked up by the cops and dropped home. A person doesn't just end up in prison for a year at 15 overnight" she commented, dropping her pen and notepad on to her chair to give the illusion she wasn't paying as close attention to what he was saying.

She was beginning to feel unnerved by how personal his statements towards her were getting and made a mental note to investigate if sexual deviancy were any of the charges on his file. "You really don't see anything worth doing more than heading back to your gang? Unless of course to take someone on a date? So you don't feel you need anyone looking after you, but your immediate reaction to being free is to be in the company of others?" She asked, hoping the question posed could set some things straight in his own head without her ever having to voice them.

She was slightly taken aback by his question but chose to answer honestly, if she had to choose it would be a criminal. She jumped as the guard began to knock on the door, startled by the sudden noise. She felt more unnerved by this man than others, and Cali simply could not pinpoint why. It wasn't like no inmate had ever been overtly sexual towards her, in fact she had on numerous occasions been told to suck a dick, and more often than not choke on it too. "Danny, I can sense you deflecting, and it really doesn't help either of us, so here's a deal. Every time you answer my questions honestly and openly, you can ask me one back okay?" She sat back into her chair, afraid the shaking in her legs would grow too strong to keep her upright. "Tell me about your family before you went in to care".

Danny frowned at her, "I don't need my gang they need me." He corrected her. He stared at her as she sat in front of him. He clenched his jaw when she mentioned his deflecting. His jaw ticked as he stared at her. His eyes went dark, "I'm done here." He said. He looked at the guards, slamming his hands on the table when she went to speak. "Fuck off bitch!" He screamed at her. He knew that if he did that the guards would pull him out of there. He managed to grab the table and flipped it. The guards rushed in and grabbed him. He didn't want to talk anymore. He looked at her as they pulled him up to his feet. He smirked at her, knowing that he won their first meeting together. Danny watched as she grabbed her things, because she had to leave first. "Bye Caroline." He said, winking at her. He frowned as he tried to get them to loosen their grip. Danny frowned as he watched her closely. He looked at the floor and sighed

Cali could see him growing agitated, and opened her mouth to begin trying to comfort him when he exploded. "Danny, calm down please" she pleaded, standing up and taking a step away from him just as he flipped her desk. a small shriek of shock escaped Cali's mouth, she was grateful when the guards came in to restrain him. she quickly began gathering her things in to her bag, glancing up at Danny and the guards every few seconds. Was he smiling? She noticed his wink as she exited the room, her mind turning as she tried to piece it all together. Why had he lost his temper so suddenly, all simply because she had outed his deviation from her questions?

She sighed, collapsing in to a chair in the break room before quickly scribbling down a few extra notes about the man she had just been with. Another officer came in to make sure she was alright, she just nodded and quickly dismissed him, intently reading over her notes to find a connection. Suddenly it came to her, Daniel had not lost his temper at all, he had lost control of the situation and chose to act upon it. she stood up from the table, heading back towards her office. She stopped to talk to the two guards outside of her office on her way back. "Give Mr.Jackson an hour to cool off, I want him back in my office after my next appointment, I won't let him go unseen" she told them sternly, trying to be as serious as she could. She knew they didn't respect her. "And when you bring him back, Unless he physically touches me with intent to harm, I don't want him pulled out of there" she ordered. It made her nervous, but a gut instinct told her he was smart enough to know hurting any member of staff would not be a smart choice, she just hoped her intuition was right.

Danny sat in his cell staring at the wall. He frowned when he heard the guard say he was going back to see the doctor. He rolled his eyes of course she wanted to see him again. Danny walked with the guards, his hands in cuffs. He sat in the room and waited for Caroline. He stared at the table, knowing she was going to be more difficult to scare away. He didn't want to put his hands on her though. He glanced over at the open door, seeing another prisoner walk by. He glared, "You're a fucking disgrace!" He snapped at the guy. He watched as the guards hurried him along. He watched as Caroline walked in, his eyes following the other prisoner til he was out of site. He looked at her, "I'll take care of him later." He muttered.

Caroline shook her head at him, smiling gently noting the erratic behaviour in her mind. She wanted to take a different approach with him this time, just let him talk and see what he has to say. If he asked her a question, she would answer and just try to keep him in that chair for the next hour. "Mr.Jackson, I hope you can be a little more patient with me this time" she said gently, sitting back in her chair and crossing her legs over one another waiting for him to speak.

Caroline had to admit his outburst earlier did have her a little spooked. It was the first time since she started her degree that she saw somebody get that worked up no more than 10 minutes in to the interview. "Danny, I would like to remind you that I am possibly the only member of staff who is here explicitly for you're benefit. Anything you say does not leave this room" the blonde reminded him, gently pushing her hair behind her ear and playing with the small charm on the necklace that hung around her neck. "Do you want to tell me what I did to upset you?"

Danny frowned as the guard grabbed his shoulder once Caroline sat down, "Be nice to the lady or we won't be so nice to you." He threatened him. Danny frowned as the man shoved his shoulder slightly. He looked at her, "I'm sorry I scared you earlier." He said once they were alone. He shook his head at her question, "You didn't do anything to upset me." He said. He let his eyes move to the door where the guards stood outside. "Do you see how they treat me? Like at any moment I will reach over this desk and snap your neck." He said. He shook his head, "Those guys need to be in here." He said. He looked back at her, "Let's get this over because clearly you aren't going to leave me alone." He said, smirking.

Cali's mouth tightened as she watched the guard leave the room. She had already warned them about interfering but the were hellbent against listening to her. "You just shocked me, I wasn't prepared for my desk to be flipped." She commented flatly, raising her eyebrow at him.

She smiled coyly as he ranted about the guards and giggled gently "well you are accused of murdering two people, and no less than an hour ago you trashed my office, so I think I understand their waryness" she teased gently, looking him straight in the eye. "So Danny, let's start on an even playing field. I know all about you, go ahead and ask me something" she offered.

Danny looked at her, knowing she would want simple questions. It wasn't like she actually cared about him. "You don't know about me. You know what is in those files. You know all about the bad part if me." He corrected her. Danny looked at his hands, "I'm sure there are things you don't want people to know about you. Why don't you tell me about that." He said. "I mean most people put on this front like their lives are so great and that nothing is wrong in their lives. So, tell me Caroline what makes you cry when your alone at night?" He asked her. He looked into her eyes, waiting for her to speak. He could tell he had dug too deep.

Danny got comfortable in his chair, "I don't give a shit about your degrees or any of that. That means nothing to me. We all end up in the same place when we die." He said He looked at his hands, "So tell me all your dark secrets." He said, looking at her. "Then i will tell you mine." He said.

Cali shifted in her chair, staring at him for a few moments. She knew sharing personal information with clients wasn't really protocol, but most of these men would never again see the light of the day, so what difference did it make? she bit gently on her lower lip crossing and uncrossing her legs as she tried to land on something that would seem personal but still not give him too much ammunition against her. she sighed gently before looking up at him. "Exactly that actually, being alone at night. 26 years on this planet and I've never made a meaningful connection with anybody" she told him with a small shrug. She wasn't lying, it was something she often got upset about, mostly while drunk and wanting a cuddle-but that fact seemed indifferent.

Caroline cleared her throat listening intently to what he had to say. "Well Mr.Jackson, as I've already said, anything you say to me stays in this room, but I need to know that promise goes both ways before i go telling you my darkest secrets, don't I?" she tested, seeing how well he would react to stimuli of possibly learning some very personal information.

Danny smirked as she told him something about herself. "That's a shame." He said, looking at her. "A gorgeous girl like you alone at night. I'm assuming there is a reason you don't just go after any guy. I'm going to take a guess and say you had a bad relationship that ruined things for you. Or maybe he just wasn't a good lay." He said, chuckling. Danny leaned back in his chair when she mentioned not telling anyone about her darkest secrets. "My lips are sealed sweetheart." He said. He leaned forwards, his arms resting on the table, closer to her than he usually was. "Go on tell me." He said. He frowned when the guard beat on the door and motioned for him to get away from her. He sighed, "These guards are dumbasses." He muttered as he moved away, hearing the beating again. "I'm not touching her dickhead!" He yelled at the guy. He slammed his hands on the table getting irritated. He stared at the floor between his legs his nails picking at the wood on her desk as he tried to calm down. Everyone seen him as a threat. He looked at her once he calmed down. "Go on." HE said.

"Yeah, something like that" Cali admitted with a shrug, after an incident at a party in her senior year, Caroline had simply never trusted a guy enough to let them get close to her. it was a large part of how she had become interested in Criminal Psychology, actually seeing how the cogs turned in the minds of the messed up, what lead them to being the way they are? She tried her hardest to refrain from shying away as he edged closer to her, willing herself to stay propped by the desk.

She cleared her throat loudly, hoping the guards would get the hint and follow her earlier request of non-interference. She was aware of and respected the fact that they were only there for her safety but it was annoying that their demeaning presence was a clear trigger for this inmate. she sat back thinking for a moment before sharing her story. "Well, Putting myself through college certainly wasn't cheap, so keep the lights on week to week I worked in a strip club...let's just say some happy endings got me to graduation" she told him, a shy smile washing across her face as she looked down in to her lap- So maybe it wasn't her story per-say, but it had been her roommate's, and she knew enough of the intricacies to pull off the lie. She wasn't quite comfortable with sharing actual slices of truth with criminals. Besides she didn't think her actual side job would go down too well if Daniel decided to share.

Daniel smirked as he leaned closer to her, "You know what I think?" He muttered, motioning her closer. "I think you are lying to me." He whispered. He grabbed her hands before she could pull away. He wasn't rough though or threatening. "You don't have the personality to sell yourself like that. You are too nice and sweet for that." He said, his eyes meeting hers. His thumbs traced the soft skin on her hands. "Why do you feel the need to lie to me?" He asked. "I thought we had a mutual agreement." He said. "You want to truth from me? I will give you it." He said, pulling her close so he was next to her ear. "I killed those guys." He whispered. "I slit the one guys throat and i beat the other one over the head with a sledgehammer." He told her so only she could hear. "That is the truth. So maybe don't lie to me because nothing you say will be as bad as what I did." He whispered. "Don't sell yourself out and pretend to be something you aren't. You aren't dangerous or fierce. You are innocent and that is what makes you so likable." He said, before pulling away. He stared at her, seeing she was mortified by him confessing to the murders and she couldn't tell anyone. What he didn't tell her was that it was in self defense and the guys had jumped him. "Go on and tell me something real about you. Like what happened to ruin men for you. Did someone hurt you?" He asked, tilting his head slightly. "Those kind of men as disgusting." He added.
