Her car sputtered to a stop and Layla groaned, feeling like luck was just not on her side today. She stepped on the gas a few more times and her car simply groaned in response. “Great, fucking super.” She muttered to herself, pushing her hair out of her face and climbing out of the car. She went over to the hood and popped it, a plume of smoke fanning into her face. She coughed, waving it away and sighing.

“Ugh what now? Why die when I’m tired and hungover,” she mumbled, kicking at her tire and looking around. She really didn’t want to call a repair place, she’d end up spending more money than she wanted to before she even got paid.

Drew drove down the road with his sunglasses on as he listened to the radio. He was headed to football practice and he was ahead of schedule as always. He noticed a car that was broken down ahead of him and a girl that looked extremely frustrated. He decided he would pull over and help her out. He stopped behind her and got out of the car. Drew removed his sunglasses as he approached her. He was pretty sure he had seen her around campus a few times. "Hey. Need any help?" He asked, "Or do you have a tow truck coming?" He asked her. He smiled at her. She was really pretty, but she seemed irritated. Though it was never fun to have your car break down.

Nova sighed as her friends took her to some party that everyone was getting drunk. They were so excited about it and honestly she just wanted to go home. She hated parties because she didn't like drunk people. Nova walked inside with them, hearing the loud music and drunk chatter filling the house. She made her way through the party and decided to go outside. She was hoping that it would be less crowded. Sometimes it was filled with pot smokers though, but that was better than dealing with drunks grinding on each other. Nova leaned against the banister as she played on her phone. She frowned as a guy from school approached her. Ryan, he was such a douche bag and he had constantly been trying to get with her. She had no interest in him. She frowned when he stood really close to her.

Ryan smirked, "Why are you out here alone?" He asked her. "Shouldn't you be drunk with your friends?" He asked as he went to put his arm around her.

Nova moved out from underneath his arm, quickly, "Nope. Now shoo." She said, waving him away. "Go find some drunk hoe." She muttered.

Ryan frowned as he moved close to her again, "You know you don't have to always be a prude bitch. Perhaps I can show you how to have fun." He said, smirking.

Nova glared at him, "How about you fuck off?" She said, smiling at him sweetly. "Or better yet go play in traffic." She said.

Ryan grabbed her arm, "Don't fucking talk to me like that Nova. You would be lucky if I let you be with me." He said, glaring.

Nova frowned at him, "Get off of me." She said, trying to get her arm free.

Nick, one of Ryker's friend stood in the corner of the deck smoking a joint with his friends when he realized Ryan with some girl. He tapped Ryker on the shoulder and pointed, "Check out dickhead." He said. Their groups never got along and had been in plenty of fights.

Layla heard a car pull up and turned, recognizing one of the boys from the football team. She’d dated and dumped several of his teammates so she knew who he was. “Uh yeah, my car just decided to stop fucking working,” She complained, gesturing to the smoking part she didn’t know the name of. “I didn’t call a tow yet I didn’t want to have to pay for it,” She admitted, pushing her hair back from her face.

“Know anything about cars? It would be great if you could help me,” She sighed. She heard her phone ring and went around to the drivers side to see who it was before canceling the call. Ironically it was the last football player she’d most recently ghosted.

Ryker took a sip from his beer, watching Ryan harrass the girl. He didn’t know her, but he knew Ryan and it seemed Ryan was always in situations like these. He finished his beer, setting the can into the table and turning toward him. “If she said no, she probably meant it, dumbass. Leave her alone,” He said coolly, taking a step toward Ryan slowly.

He hated dealing with Ryan and his friends but he usually didn’t get involved if he could help it. He didn’t like to start problems, but he loved to finish them. “Let her go,” He said calmly, moving so he was now in front of them and put one hand on her arm gently, so he could pull her out of the way in case it turned for the worse. The other hand he balled into a fist just in case. “I’m serious.”

Drew looked at her engine, "Looks like your radiator." He said, "You are more than likely going to have to call someone to tow it. I know a guy who will do it for free." He told her. He had a friend who owned a mechanics shop. "I can also get you a good deal if you want." He said. He liked helping people. If he could make someone's day better he always did. He stared at her, "Your Layla right?" He asked. He knew he had seen her with some of the other guys. A lot of them had been with her. Drew kept to himself when it came to stuff like that. He moved away from the car and pulled his cell phone out, "Do you need a ride somewhere?" He asked as he called his friend. "I'm headed to practice so I can drop you off." He explained.

Ryan laughed at Ryker, "Dude fuck off. Go off with your butt buddies and leave us alone." He said. He pulled on Nova's arm, "Besides she's mine. She wouldn't want your worthless ass anyway." He said.

Nova rolled her eyes, "Ew." she said to Ryan, "Like I would ever be with you." She said, hearing Ryker's friends laugh behind them. She gasped as Ryker swung at Ryan, feeling him pull her out of the way in the process. She didn't know who it happened, but she ended up behind him.

Ryan glared at him, "Fine keep the whore. Have fun with her. I'm sure she would be into fucking all of you at once." He said before he stormed off.

Nova crossed her arms, glaring at Ryan when he spoke. She looked at Ryker when he turned around, "Um..thanks." She said.

Nick smiled as he moved next to her, "I'm Nick. This is Ryker." He said, introducing everyone. "Oh and those idiots are Calvin and Taven." He said. "And you are?" He asked.

Nova looked at them, "Nova." She said. She noticed that Ryker seemed more distant than the rest. He was definitely the cutest of them all. Though his friends weren't bad looking either.

“Don’t mention it. You seem to have bad taste in guys.” Ryker nodded as his name was said and then reached for another beer. “You always hang with jerks?” He asked, raising an eyebrow at her and taking a long drink. “Ryan’s an asshole, always has been always will be.” He said to her, lighting another cigarette and exhaling.

If he were being honest, he hated dealing with them. He only went out because otherwise they’d be drinking elsewhere, and someone else was supplying the beers. He wouldnt have gotten involved, but he hated that kind of thing, and stopped it whenever he could.

She sighed. “Great. Uh yeah, if they can tow it that would be cool,” She said, closing up her car door and lowering the hood. This was the worst luck, she hoped her insurance would pay for it, she paid enough to them as it was.

“I was headed to school, if you could drop me off there,” She said to him, getting her bag and phone out of the car and locking it. “And yeah, I’m Layla. Tanner right? The name on your jersey,” She asked, shaking her head at her car. “Actually maybe I should wait for the tow to get here,” She muttered.

Nova laughed when he mentioned her hanging out with Ryan, "Oh god know. I would never hang out with that asshole." She said, laughing. "He's been bugging me for like the last four months." She said. She looked over feeling Nick staring at her.

"So, Nova like the car?" Calvin asked as he lit his joint.

Nova looked at him, "No, like space." She said, laughing softly.

Calvin started at her, "Who names someone after space?" HE asked.

Nova looked at him, "My dad's an astronomer." She told him. Calvin stared at her, "What the fuck is that?" He asked.

Nick shook his head, "God you are dumb. A guy who studies space stuff." Nick told him. He looked at Nova, "Sorry he sucks." He said.

Nova smiled, "It's okay." She said. She looked at Ryker when she felt his eyes on her. She couldn't help but feel something for him. Her parents would kill her if she brought home a guy like that though.

Drew smiled, "Tanner is my last name. My name is Drew." He corrected her. He nodded, "are you sure you want to wait by yourself?" He asked. He didn't like the idea of leaving her stand along the road alone. "I could wait with you." He offered. He knew he had to be at practice, but he also didn't want to leave her along a busy road. Not everyone was as nice as he was. "He really shouldn't take too long." He told her.

“It’s fine, not like I’m ever on time for anything.” She said, leaning against her car. “Weren’t you on your way somewhere? You don’t have to stay, unless you wanted to.” She added, crossing her arms. She looked at him, her head tiled to the side. He was cute, and but he wasn’t her type for anything other than a one night stand.

“No you idiot, Nova like supernova.” He snorted, shaking his head. He knew a bit about astronomy, he had gotten a book growing up on it and it was one of his favorites from his childhood.

“Next time he bothers you, punch him in the face, seems to work fine.” He laughed a little.

Taven shook his head. “Or just call Ryker,” He laughed.

Ryker shrugged, looking at Nova. While she was cute, he knew her type wasn’t for him. She seemed too good for his taste.

Drew smiled, "I will stay with you." He said. He texted his coach to let him know he was going to be late. "Besides I doubt you want to stand out here by yourself." He said as he leaned against her car. He felt her look at him, "What?" He asked, smirking. He had to admit, he understood why all the guys on the team liked her so much. "You live off campus?" He asked her.

Nova smiled, "I'm pretty sure I could hit him with my car and he would still try to ask me out." She said.

Nick laughed, "That's because he's a dumb ass." He said.

Nova heard them mention calling Ryker, "Pretty sure he has more exciting things to do than save me from Ryan." She said.

"Not really." His friend said in unison.

Nova looked at Ryker, "They have so much faith in you." She teased him, giggling a little.

“You’ll have to prove to be good company then.” His smirk was enough to make her question why she hasn’t gone after him yet or at least let him chase her. “Just curious. I’m sure you know I’ve talked to a few of your teammates. Aren’t you curious as to why?” She asked, her eyes on his. “And yeah, I live about 10 minutes from campus, by the bridge.” She explained, sitting down onto the hood of her car.

He snorted at his friends, chuckling before looking down at his shoes. “Guess so,” He muttered, shoving his friends shoulder playfully and grinning. “Try running him over and if he still doesn’t get the message, I’ll come and see what I can do.” He laughed, shaking his head. “Though if you do a good job he shouldn’t be able to do much of anything after that.”

Taven rolled his eyes and looked at Nova. “He acts like he spends his time on important time consuming stuff,” He grinned at his friend.

Drew looked at her, "I mean your relationships are you business, but if you want to fill me in you can." He said, smiling. He nodded, "Yea? I life about 15 mintues from here." He said. He had gotten an apartment with one of his buddies so that he could get away from dorm rooms. He hated it the first year and swore it wouldn't be happening anymore.

Nova smiled, then looked at Ryker, "What do you do in your spare time?" She asked. Nick looked at Ryker, "Yes Ryker, what do you do?" He asked, teasing his friend. It was not often they seen her friend talk to a girl for conversation. Nova sat on the banister of the porch as she listened to Ryker talk. After a few hours of talking to the guys and watching them slowly get drunk she looked at the time. "Is it really two in the morning?" She asked. She was surprised it was that late. She looked at Ryker, her legs over his lap. The only ones that were not passed out was him and Nick who was now hitting on some girl. "I really need to get home." She said as she sat up some, being closer to him than usual. "Do you guys have a way to get home?" She asked. She didnt think any of them should be driving.

Ryker snorted again, shaking his head at his friend. “Not much, really,” He admitted, setting his beer down. “Nothing you’d be interested in anyway,” He added. “What about you? Go to school, study, hang out at the mall with your friends?” He asked her and listened to her talk. He noticed her getting slowly more touchy with him and before he knew it her legs were in his lap. Not that he minded, he just knew the kind of girl she was and he knew she didn’t know what she would be getting herself into. “Yeah I can get them home, don’t worry about it. You have a way to get home?” He asked, looking at her. She didn’t look like she’d had much to drink but he didn’t mind taking her if it meant she wouldn’t deal with someone like Ryan again.

“Fair enough,” She said, leaning back onto her arms. “Are you at the university on sports scholarship?” She asked him, wondering what it might take to get to him. He seemed to be pretty secure, but she was tenacious. “Oh look, your friend?” She said as the tow finally pulled up. “Thanks for this, I appreciate the help. And the company,” She added, giving the tow truck driver the address of the shop she’d get her car fixed at.

Nova smiled at him, "I drove so I will be fine." She said. She hadn't drank hardly anything. She had half a drink that her friend gave her in the beginning of the night. "I'm not really a drinker." She said. Nova moved away from him. "It was fun hanging out with you guys." She said. "Well before your friends passed out." She said laughing softly.
Nick walked over, "You can't leave yet. We are going to eat next." He said.

Nova smiled, "I can't tonight. I wouldn't be shocked if my dad was waiting on the porch for me." She said. "Rain check though." She said as she got up. "Bye guys." She said before she walked off and went to her car.

Drew nodded, "Yea i am." He said. He smiled as his friend showed up. He talked with him for a little, "Zane will get you back safe." He told her. He smiled, "I will talk to you later." He said before he walked to his car and got in. He headed to practice, thinking about Layla.

Luckily Layla’s car wouldn’t be hard to fix, and it wouldn’t cost the fortune she had been expecting. She walked on campus, having taken the shuttle instead since she couldn’t drive herself anymore. She heard the football team practicing on the practice fields and headed over, wanting to thank Drew again. Matt, the other guy she had been talking to on the team noticed her almost immediately and came over, expecting that she had shown up for him.

“Haven’t heard from you in a bit, Layla, miss me?” He asked, wiping his forehead.

“You can think that if it’ll make you feel better about it.” She murmured, walking around him. “You’re boring, Matt.” She said as she kept walking and went up to the stands.

Ryker came out of the convenience store with a new pack of cigarettes and some beer and pulled out two, putting one behind his ear and lighting the other. He recognized Nova a few steps away but stayed where he was, figuring she didn’t wanna be seen with him outside of a party.

Drew walked off the field after practice and sighed as he took his helmet off. He looked over as Layla came walking towards him after he pulled his shoulder pads off, leaving him in his sleeveless tshirt. "Hey." He said. "Did you get your car taken care of?" He asked as he opened his bottle of warer. He took a swig of it, seeing the guys staring at her. "You are very popular." He teased her.

Nova smiled as she walked out of the local coffee shop with her latte in hand. She had met with her friend, but was heading home. She decided to walk today because her house wasn't far. She waved to her friend before she started walking. She was surprised to see Ryker, "Hey." She said smiling. She realized he was a lot more gorgeous in the day time. "I would ask what you are doing, but clearly you have plans." She said, motioning to the beer in his arm. She looked up at him, he seemed surprised that she was standing with him. "Is something wrong?" She asked, looking up at him. She held her latte for it to cool off.

“It would seem so,” She smiled at him, feeling the eyes of the others in her but ignoring them and focusing on him. “I wanted to thank you again, my car should be fixed by tomorrow, and the tow was really nice of you.” She asded. “So thanks again, I appreciate it.” She said, looking at the pads. “There a game coming up or something?”

He laughed in slight nervousness. “Yesterday was a party so it’s not too surprising but you coming up to me a second time is a little weird. You’re not scared of your reputation getting ruined for being around me?” He asked her, taking a drag off the cigarette. “These are just for my refrigerator,” He added, gesturing to the beer. @ Gunslinger;

Drew smiled, "Yea this weekend actually." He explained. "You should come. We are going to a party afterwards and you could come along if you'd like." He said. "We me I mean not everyone." He corrected himself. He didn't want her to think she would be hanging out with all of her exs.

Nova shook her head, "I mean I don't really care what people think to begin with. I like everyone unless they are assholes." She said. She watched him, "Are you going to be an asshole to me?" She asked him. Nova took a sip of her latte. "Do you go there?" She asked as she memtioned the coffee shop. "They make the best cinnmon roll latte." She said, smiling. "I get it every time." She said. "Well since you aren't busy you can walk with me. Come on." She said, motioning him to follow as she walked down the street.

Layla nodded a little. “I heard, I think I was invited but I told them no, so why should I tell you yes?” She smiled and shrugged, her head leaning into her shoulder as she tilted it to look st him. “But I’m not sure about coming to watch you play, I’m not really the cheerleading type,” She said, gesturing to her outfit that consisted of heeled boots, tight jeans and an even tighter shirt. “You’re cute though, so who knows.”

He hesitated a second before following her into the coffee shop. He didn’t have anything else to do but he was hesitant in what she might want from him. “I don’t really like sweet things, I like black coffee usually,” He admitted as he looked around the coffee shop. He set down the beer onto the table and sat into the seat. “And I’m an asshole to everyone, no ones ever really exempt from it,” He chuckled to himself.

Drew smiled, "Oh im sure you would enjoy watching me." He said as he stepped closer to her. "We could do something after if you want. Anything you want." He said. Drew walked with her carrying his stuff. He looked over at her, "I'm sure you can think of something fun for us to do." He said, looking her over.

Nova smiled as she looked at him, "Black coffee it is." She said as she got up. She walked to the counter and ordered their drinks. She sat with him and handed it to him. Nova smiled, "I don't think you are an asshole. Well not to me at least." She said. She could feel people staring at them. she knew that everyone in town was afraid of him or talked about him.

He shrugged, sitting back into his chair. “You trying to turn me into some sort of project?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. “Your type usually stay away from me unless you’ve got something you’re trying to prove,” He smirked at her. “Just because I saved you from one asshole doesn’t mean I’m not one too,” He added. He was hesitant at what she wanted. He usually didn’t care about hooking up but most girls hooked up with him then left him alone, they didn’t usually ask him for coffee or anything later.

“I’m sure I could,” She smiled as she looked at him. “And I’m sure you’d enjoy me showing up to cheer for you too.” She’d decided. He was cute and he seemed interesting so she’d go for it. “Anything I want? Not sure you’d be up for it though.” At this rate she’d have gone through the entire offensive line before the end of term. “Surprised you want to though, didn’t think I was your type. You seem like the kind to like bubbly girl next door types.” She smirked a bit and shrugged.
