Right Kind of Crazy

Luke sighed as he parked his truck in Thomas’ driveway, killing the engine. If it were up to him, he would probably still be at home, nursing a beer on his couch—the same thing he did any time he had free time, now that his divorce from Caroline was finalized and he didn’t have the kids. But he was doing this for Thomas. Luke knew that it would mean the world to his friend for him to show up at this little engagement party. And he was one of the groomsmen, so he was pretty much obligated. “You’re lucky that you’re my friend,” was what Luke told Thomas on the phone when he finally agreed to come. Worst come to worst, he could just pull out his phone, say that there was an emergency with the kids, and split. The vocalist put his car keys in his pocket before walking around to the backyard, as he had been instructed. Music could be heard playing from a speaker, and the scent of grilled meat reached Luke’s nose.

Luke had been looking at his phone when he ran into something—or rather, someone. “Oh, damn, I’m sorry!” The superstar spoke, putting his phone in his pocket so he could look his companion in the eye. His gaze softened and he smiled at the sight of the blonde in front of it. "My name's Luke... I don't think I've met you before."

Today was the day - he best friend in the whole world was engaged and today was the engagement party. Blake had been quite early, though that had more to do with helping Lauren with 'setting up'. That's what they told Thomas at least, really they were just on pinterest looking up cute decorations they could use at the wedding. Before long people started to arrive and the two had to rush around to get everything done. That's how she found herself, eyes down on her keys as she sorted to find the right one, running smack into another person.

"Oh sweet... I am so sorry !" She rushed out, her eyes darting up to meet the eyes of the man she had literally run into. He had to have been one of Thomas' friends, being that she had never met him before and she knew most everyone invited. "Dont worry about it..." she bit the inside of her lip softly "I'm Blake - the maid of honor." She explained, as it was easier than going into the story of how she and her best friend had met.

Luke nodded, his signature grin growing wide. Blake had an effortless beauty about her, and a quality that even though she'd only spoken one sentence to Luke, he wanted to know more. "Maid of honor, huh? Well, I'm not exactly the best man, but I'm one of Thomas' groomsmen." The singer sighed to himself before taking off his cap and putting it in his pocket. "I'm gonna go try and find Thomas-- hopefully I bump into you again real soon," Luke winked before heading even further into the back yard, in desperate need of a beer and a burger.

Blake bit the inside of her lip, turning to watch him walk back, into the yard. Her mind had blanked as to why she had been leaving the party to begin with. That smile he gave her... God that smile was a lopsided piece of heaven. Shaking her head, she recalled the reason of her departure. "Ice. Ice... right. We need ice." She murmured, mostly to herself, as she continued back to her car. As she pulled out of the driveway, headed for the gas station down the road, she found herself lost in thought on who that could've been. She'd heard the names of all the groomsmen.... and she didn't recognize his.

In his quest for an alcoholic beverage, Luke managed to find Thomas. "Well, I almost didn't think you were gonna show up, Grandpa!" Thomas clapped Luke on the shoulder before handing him a Budweiser out of the cooler. Luke rolled his eyes before cracking open the beer and taking a long sip. "Hey, I promised, didn't I? Plus I didn't want Lauren to kick my ass. I'm more afraid of her than you, you know." He laughed, looking down at the grill. "Do you need any help with that?" Luke offered. If he was there, he might as well be useful.

Blake was at the store and back in no time, bags of ice in hand, with two more in her backseat. She quickly made her way in the house, running into Lauren as she opened ome of the bags of ice and dumped it into a bowl. "Hey love, can you ask Thomas or one of his friends to grab the other two bags from my car?" She asked as she broke up the ice a bit. Some was for the coolers and some was for drinks.

Lauren made her way out to the deck, smiling when she noticed Luke standing with Thomas. "Luke ! Im.so glad you made it!." She held her arms out, giving him a quick hug, before turning back to Thomas. "Baby, I know you're busy grilling but B needs help getting the rest of the ice from the car."

Luke returned Lauren's hug before listening to her request. "Just let me know which car it is, and I'll drop it off in the kitchen." He offered. After he got the description of Blake's car, Luke headed off to look for it. Once it was found, Luke took a bag of ice in each arm before turning back to walk towards the house and the kitchen. His face lit up with a grin at the sight of Blake. "Well hey, stranger. Long time no see." He set the bags on the counter.

Looking up at the sound of a voice she was unfamiliar with, Blake couldn't help but smile. "Well hey there.. I see they nominated you to help with ice duty." As she dumped the broken up ice into the coolers, she looked up at him again. "It was Luke right? Wanna help home break this ice up? I'd hate to keep you from the festivities but I could use the help. Lauren and I kinda procrastinated getting everything ready and now she needs to play hostess."

Luke nodded his head, stepping in to help with the ice breaking duties. "Don't mind if I do," he spoke, taking one of the bags. The singer dropped it on the ground a few times until it was decently broken up before putting it in the cooler. "Is there anything else you want me to help with in here?" He asked. Luke was always one to pitch in and help to make things go smoothly.

"No no ! It was Lauren and I who didnt have it all set up already." Blake protested as she filled the cooler with beers and soda from the fridge. She still had to set up the condiments table, and slice some tomatoes for the burgers. "Please, go enjoy yourself. It wouldn't be right, you're a guest." She smiled at him, closing the lid. "You are more than welcome to take that out with you if you'd like."

Luke shook his head no. "I'm a guest, but I can't let a lady struggle in here by herself. I am a gentleman after all." He gave her a wink as a laugh tumbled past his lips. The singer saw that Blake wasn't going to budge, so he just nodded his head. "Yes ma'am. That I can handle." Luke gave her a mock salute before taking the cooler's handle and wheeling it outside.

Blake smiled to herself as she shook her head, her eyes rolling as she pulled tomatoes from the bag to slice. She turned to grab a knife, her eyes focusing on Luke as he walked outside with the coolers. How she had never met this man before was beyond her, but she just couldn't get past the skipping on her chest. "Stop it Blake. For all you know he is married." She spoke to herself, snapping back to reality. Honestly she was hoping hed end up. Ack in the kitchen with her, but she knew better than to get her hopes up. And with thought, she grabbed the knife and turned her back to the party, slicing tomatoes for the burgers.

Luke put the cooler in its designated spot before dusting his hands off on his jeans. He took a second to survey the yard. It was still kind of early-- the party wasn't due to start for another twenty minutes or so. So the vocalist decided to head back into the kitchen and see if Lauren's friend needed any help. "Boo," Luke spoke, knocking on the kitchen door frame to alert Blake to his arrival. "There's still a little bit of time-- are you absolutely sure you don't need any help from me?" He leaned against the wall, taking another long sip from his beer.

Blake jumped at the sudden noise behind her, the knife running across her finger as it slipped. "Christ Almighty.. you scared the bejeezus outta me." She exclaimed, turning to face him. "Well since you insist... why don't you come help me slice these while I go rinse my finger." She smiled, ignoring the stinging sensation. It was a small cut - barely worth attention - but she couldn't very well bleed all over the food.

"You okay?" Luke asked, raising a brow as he headed into the kitchen. At the sight of the blood, he went to grab the box of bandaids that Lauren kept on the top of the fridge. "Here...I'll take over the slicin'." He spoke, grabbing a fresh knife. Every now and again he looked over at Blake to check on how she was doing. "That looks like it didn't feel the best." He laughed slightly.

"Yea, I'm fine." Blake sighed, drying it off and wrapping it in a bandage. "Thank you. And no, it certainly did not feel good." She shook her head slightly as she watched him slicing. "Well, tell me about yourself Luke. How do you know Lauren and Thomas? You must be pretty good friends to be in the wedding."
