    I don't believe in saints
    They never make mistakes
I know it's not my place
Who am I to tell you that you need to change?
    Her closet's such a mess
Filled up with all the skeletons she's kept
    Nobody's perfect I confess
But she's perfect enough without ever dressing up, yeah

To say Kellin hated school was an understatement, and yet, here she was, sat at the back of her History class, doodling in the margins of her notebook rather than paying attention to anything the teacher was saying. Checking her phone under her desk in case her mother had tried to call her, Kellin turned to look at Clara beside her - a close friend in a similar situation. Raising her eyebrows in a silent question of concern, Kellin winced as the teacher called on her to pay attention, nodding in apology and focusing on doodling once more.

Luke watched the History presentation their teacher was showing them with pure boredom, instead opting to throw paper planes at Michael, who was sat in front of him. "Oi," he whisper-shouted, being loud enough to be distruptive. "This class sucks." And although the teacher then turned to tell Luke off, the blonde boy merely smirked and shrugged his shoulders. "Just telling the truth, sugar." He looked proud of himself as students around him laughed.

Clara tapped the tip of her pencil against her notebook nervously, too distracted by everything going on at home to really pay attention to class. Hearing Kellin shift to look at her, she offered a weak smile in response to Kellin’s silent question and shrugged gently, not wanting to concern her friend, knowing Kelling had her own problems to deal with - similar problems, even. Blinking, her gaze went to Luke as he joked around and she chewed on her lip, trying not to be as amused as she felt.

Michael grinned slightly as he listened to his friend, picking up the paper airplane Luke had thrown at him to throw it back at him, in full view of the teacher. “He’s not lying,” he admitted, talking in his normal voice, his grin broadening as he saw the look the teacher shot them. “What? It’s not our fault History’s boring. Maybe you should make it more interesting. At least we’re not dozing off like some of the students in here.” He shrugged slightly, grinning as he leaned back in his seat.

Kellin nodded in solidarity with Clara, running a hand through her hair anxiously. Still, hearing Luke and Michael's exchange with the teacher, Kellin couldn't help the small smile that formed. Those two had been troublemakers for as long as she could remember, but she'd never really spoken to them. Shaking her head in amusement, Kellin continued to doodle, not wanting to lift her head, or draw any attention to herself and Clara.

Luke laughed, leaning forward to rough up Michael's hair. "Exactly, you should be grateful that you have students like us to make this place look alive." He grinned, his grin growing as the teacher told them both to leave the classroom to cool off. "Aw, c'mon. What's the fun in that?" He pouted with over exaggeration, looking around. "I think they'd rather us in here than you."

Clara listened quietly to the boys talk to the teacher, though she chewed hard on her lip to try to stop herself from laughing. Despite how bad things were at home, those two - especially Luke - tended to make it hard not to laugh. And, while she’d never talked to the boy a day in her life, she was grateful that he existed, that he provided something to be amused about.

Michael scoffed, jokingly swatting at Luke’s hand as he leaned back in his seat, grinning broadly at the teacher. “Face it, teach, we liven up this class, you might as well keep us around,” he pointed out, “I mean, if you want, we could even teach. Maybe. I dunno, that might be really boring, I don’t know how you do it.” He laughed, though. “But, keeping us in here works better on your part, because at least the others aren’t falling asleep with us here.”

Kellin smiled as she heard Michael’s retaliation, shaking her head in amusement. She didn’t want to laugh, draw attention to herself, but still, she found him hilarious, even if he didn’t know who she was, she was still grateful that he was such a joker, wondering what it would be like to know him. Feeling her phone vibrate, Kellin saw a message from her mother and internally groaned, raising her hand. Meekly asking to go for some air, Kellin stood as the teacher nodded, offering Clara a sympathetic smile before heading outside.

Luke grabbed Michael’s hood, forcing it over his face with a laugh, grinning with Michael’s words. “Could you imagine?!” Luke laughed loudly. “Us. As teachers. God help you lot if we ever did that.” He turned around to see the class. Luke got along with everyone, but there was one or two students he wasn’t sure of. His eyes fell upon one of those students. He recognised her as Clara whenever the teacher call roll, and Luke had considered her the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen, but he’d never really acknowledged her.

Michael scoffed, grinning back at his friend. "Not a single thing would ever get done, that much is for sure," he joked with a laugh, though he paused when he saw Kellin requesting to leave. Curious, especially since she looked so distracted - and, because he'd admit that a part of the reason he joked around so much was because he wanted to make the gorgeous girl laugh, he wanted to know what her laugh sounded like, - he requested going to the bathroom before he quickly stood up to follow after her, unable to stop himself. "Kellin, hey," he called as he caught up to her, "Is something wrong?"

Clara watched Kellin leave with concern, chewing on her lip as she wanted to follow her friend to make sure that she was okay, but she paused in the process of asking when she caught Luke's attention fall on her. Ducking her head quickly, she slid down in her seat, trying to do what she could to get his attention off of her, not wanting to acknowledge it.

Kellin ducked her head as she texted her mother back some reassuring words that Kellin was still in school and hadn't run off. Her mother's divorce hadn't been easy, and Kellin was there to pick up the pieces, although a lot of the times, she wished she wasn't. Still, hearing a voice behind her, Kellin lifted her head and turned, frowning as she saw Michael. "No, why?" She asked, slipping her phone into her pocket and tightening her jacket, wondering why someone like Michael Clifford would even begin to care.

Luke's head tilted with curiosity has he continued to watch Clara, his heart racing his chest. Why had it taken him this long to truly appreciate how gorgeous she was? He'd seen her around, of course he had, but speaking to her seemed to be difficult for other people. She was always in another world, and Luke was almost ashamed that he'd never tried. Still, seeing her duck her head and sink down in her seat, Luke frowned sympathetically, wanting to do anything to make her laugh. Still, he wrote a note on a piece of paper. Are you alright? along with his number. Before standing up and pirouetting through the classroom over-dramatically - much to the amusement of another friend of his, Calum, and sliding it onto her desk before prancing away to shove Calum's hood over his head.

Michael blinked at how quickly Kellin had slipped her phone into her pocket and, while he was curious about it, he tried not to show it, not wanting to put her off, and he offered a small smile before he shrugged. "You just rushed off and you seemed... I don't know if upset is the word, but definitely distracted," he mentioned gently as he watched her, concerned, wondering whether she was being honest about nothing being wrong. While he didn't know her well - not at all, really, - he still found himself just drawn to her in a way that he couldn't really explain. She was such a quiet, reserved person, and it wasn't something that he was used to witnessing; he only ever saw her talking to one person at the school, and that had made him all the more curious about her overall. She was gorgeous, though, and he wanted to know if that gorgeousness bled into her personality, too, but, more than anything, he wanted to get to know her, he wanted to make sure he was okay. "If something is wrong, you can talk to me about it. I mean, I know I may not seem like the go-to person for problems, but I'm at least a good listener, outside of lessons."

Clara paused at Luke's show, trying hard not to appear amused, though she felt her heart race nervously with the fact that he'd put a note on her desk, because she just knew that it would attract all the attention she was trying to avoid. Chewing on her lip, she opened the note regardless, and she peered at it for a moment, her brows furrowing at the sight of the words - was she that obvious? The only person who usually ever noticed any disturbance in her behavior was Kellin, but, even then, she wasn't the one having problems right now; she was just worried about her friend. I'm okay. I'd just prefer to avoid attention, please. She wasn't sure how to get the note back to him; if she asked people to pass it to him, they'd certainly talk. If she got up to take it to him, they'd notice. But, she figured the best path was through Calum, since he was Luke's friend, certainly it'd be safest that way, so she reached across to pass it to Calum, motioning to Luke as discreetly as she could.

Kellin arched a brow at Michael, surprised that he'd noticed her in any way at all. Seeing the small smile he offered her though, Kellin offered one back, not wanting to seem rude as she listened to his words. "Just needed to breathe." She told him, not giving much more away, trying to keep a good poker face so he wouldn't prod anymore into her personal life, or her problems, not wanting to drag someone as wonderful as Michael into her black hole. "But uh, there's nothing to talk about, really." She promised, although she was touched that he cared so much to offer a shoulder to lean on, despite him being right about not being a go-to person. Kellin cleared her throat with his words, ducking her head. "Well, um, thanks." She disappeared into the girls' bathroom, texting Clara. Michael Clifford just asked if I'm okay, what the fuck?

Luke collapsed back into his seat, grinning as the teacher shouted at him. "Oh, c'mon, don't pretend I'm not a good dancer, sugar." He winked, although he felt Calum tap his shoulder, and Luke turned in his seat, seeing his note folded up and returned. Luke looked to Clara, offering her a sweet smile, but he turned back around to face the front, unfolding the piece of paper and reading Clara's response. Her handwriting was beautiful, and Luke found himself cherishing that little piece of her he had. Still, he clicked his pen, scribbling his number onto the paper. I know I shouldn't be interfering, and I'm sorry, but I can't help it. Text me? It'll be easier to not draw attention. I'm worried. Slipping the paper back to Calum and discreetly hinting to Clara, Luke turned back around and dug his phone out of his pocket, not even being discreet about it, tutting at his teacher. "Okay, honey, nearly done."

Michael chewed on his lip as he watched her for a moment. "If you're sure. But, just... Keep in mind that I'm willing to listen, if you need somebody to listen," he assured her quietly as he watched her leave, though he didn't move away. Instead, he shifted, leaning against the wall outside of the girls' bathroom just in case she changed her mind and decided to talk. But he also wanted to just be there for her, make sure that she wasn't alone. He just wasn't sure that there was nothing wrong, that she was okay, and he wanted to be there for her if she needed him.

Clara accepted the note quietly when Calum passed it back to her, having tried her best to ignore Luke's sweet smile, not wanting to read too much into it. Opening the paper to read the note, she chewed on her lip before she shifted to pull her phone out, starting a new text and inputting Luke's phone number, sending a text. Hi? I'm okay. She wasn't sure what else to say, but she blinked when she got the text from Kellin. For a moment, she felt a slight concern built up in her. That's weird? Luke Hemmings just asked me the same thing? Are you okay, though?

Kellin read Clara's text, exhaling heavily as she sat on the counter by the hand dryer, kicking her legs slightly, knowing that nobody ever came into this particular bathroom. Luke Hemmings? Is this a sick joke, or do they actually give a fuck? I'm fine, Mom texted me. She thought I was running away again. Running a hand through her blonde hair, Kellin took a moment to breathe, thinking about Michael and his offer, wondering why it suddenly came so out of the blue. Furrowing her eyebrows with that, Kellin jumped down, splashing her face with water. "You got this." She told herself quietly, looking down at her phone as it beeped, ducking her head, finding her mother too much to deal with.

Luke's whole face lit up as he received a text from a number he didn't recognise. Saving it as Clara's, Luke re-read her text once, twice, three times, but he knew better. You sure? He sent the text. I know this is out of the blue, but I see you almost every day, and you always look ready to cry. I worry about you, Clara, it's difficult not to. He frowned with that, not caring about what the teacher was saying, not even listening anymore anyway, opting to block her out in Clara's favour, wanting to make sure that the mysterious girl was okay, wanting to know her more. I know it's not much, but if you ever need a shoulder to lean on, or someone to talk to... I promise I'm not a jerk outside of class.

Michael tapped his fingers against the wall as he waited patiently, staring at the door for a long while, chewing on his lip, though a rush of concern flooded through him with how long she was taking. What if Kellin was depressed? What if something was seriously wrong and she was in there harming herself in some way? Unable to to really think about it longer or wait much longer in general, he moved to knock lightly on the door. "Kellin?" he called with concern, his heart sinking with the thought that he might not hear anything back. "Are you okay in there? I'm not rushing you or anything, of course, I just... Kind of let my mind wander and now I'm even more worried, so I just need to make sure."

Clara chewed on her lip with Kellin's text, feeling the concern with the possibility swallowing her whole. I don't know. It doesn't make much sense to me. Why choose today of all days for them to both start asking questions? Is your mom okay? After she sent the text, she noticed Luke's texts and she stared at the texts for a long moment, feeling her heart sinking with the possibility that all this concern could be fake. And, before she could stop herself, she texted him back, having to ask. Is this a joke?

Exactly, it's weird. She's fine, she's been drinking again. Kellin frowned as she heard Michael's voice. Had he been waiting outside the whole time? Collecting her thoughts, Kellin smoothed out her hair, sending her mother another quick text of reassurance, before opening the door. "Michael, I'm fine." She frowned, crossing her arms over her chest as soon as she'd slipped her phone into her pocket. "What concern is it of yours, anyway? Where do you care so much?" She frowned, not meaning to sound so cruel as she moved past him to return to class.

Luke frowned with Clara's text, but he understood and sympathised with why she would think that. His concern had come completely out of the blue, and with how obnoxious he often acted, Luke knew that it could seem like a set up to some distasteful joke. Not a joke, I promise. I may be a dick to teachers, but I'm not a bully. Luke thought for a moment, wondering how he could reassure her. I just think you're interesting, Clara. How you don't care, how you only stick to one friend... it makes me worry that something's going on. He decided to be outright honest, knowing he had nothing to lose at that moment.

Michael paused when she'd finally walked out and he stared at her for a moment, at least glad that she didn't seem hurt. "I, uh... Well, I mean, I guess it's not really my business, but that doesn't really stop the concern," he said quietly as he watched her, "Does somebody really need a huge reason to care? You just look so distressed all the time and I noticed, so I just wanted to reach out, let you know that, if something is wrong, you don't have to take it on alone."

It really is weird. I'm here if you need to talk. Clara sent her text to her friend, aware that they were all each other really had when it came to a support system. Seeing that Luke had texted back, she read over the messages a few times before she sighed quietly, rubbing at her face. You don't know me, Luke, and I don't know you, so opening up to you? It's not just going to magically happen in five minutes, whether you're seriously concerned or not.

Kellin furrowed her eyebrows, looking to Michael. "Can you just tell me now if this is some sick joke you wanna play on me?" She asked with a defensive frown, turning to look at him. "I'm not distressed, this is just my face." She lied. "And even if there was something wrong, I'd keep it to myself instead of running the risk of the whole school knowing." Kellin sighed, scrubbing a hand across her face as her phone beeped, messaging Clara back. Thank you <3 Looking to Michael then, Kellin frowned. "Just keep your nose out of it, Michael, okay?" She put her phone on silent before entering the class once more, sitting beside Clara.

Luke sighed, scrubbing a hand over his face in concern. Still, he understood. That's okay. I just want you to know that I'm serious. Would you like to eat lunch with us this afternoon? He offered, wanting to be approachable, wanting to be a safe space that Clara could turn to, but still, he knew that the girls only hung around with one another and Luke didn't find it weird, but he found himself growing curious to how they became so close and how, Clara especially, just stuck out to him. Relaxing back in his seat, Luke watched the teacher with boredom, exhaling his worry out of him, although he looked over his shoulder once more to Clara.

Michael blinked with the mention of it but he quickly followed after her. "Hey, this isn't a joke to me," he told her gently but genuinely, "I'm actually concerned about you, I promise. I may be a jokester, but I don't just treat people poorly like that - joking around and being a dick are two totally different things. When I say I'm concerned, I mean it, completely." His expression softened as he watched her. "And I wouldn't tell anybody if something was wrong, I promise. I don't gossip like that." Still, seeing her going into the classroom, he chewed on his lip and sighed, running his hands through his hair before he followed her in, moving to sit in his spot, though he couldn't help but to peer at her with concern.

Clara stared at the text for a moment, unsure. I'll ask Kellin what she wants to do. There was no way she'd sit with them alone; she didn't know Luke and she didn't know his friends, outside of them being jokesters. Chewing on her lip nervously, she looked to Kellin when her friend came in, though her expression softened when she saw her friend's own expression before she texted Kellin. Are you okay? Also, Luke offered eating lunch with them, but I don't want to agree unless you're there, too.

Kellin looked to Clara, trying to wipe the kicked puppy look from her face, but texted Clara under the table. If you wanna go, I'll tag along... She bit her lip, thinking about the words Michael had said outside of the classroom. What do we have to lose? It's not like we have a reputation. Laying her head in her arms, Kellin looked to Clara. "What's the harm, right?"

Luke looked to Michael, arching a curious eyebrow, but he moved his gaze firmly to his phone; waiting for Clara's answer. All he wanted was to make sure she was safe, protected. If she was getting hurt, Luke wanted to know, so he could do something to help. He knew it wouldn't be easy to get Clara to trust him, she seemed so guarded all the time, but Luke was determined to get through to her, even if he had to chip away at her wall for a while.

Clara watched her friend, concerned, wanting to reach to give her friend's hand a squeeze, but she didn't want to attract attention to either of them. "Right," she agreed quietly, offering a small nod. Might as well. She sent the text to Kellin before she returned to Luke's message. We'll join you guys for lunch.

Michael watched Kellin from where he was, losing his interest in joking around and annoying the teacher in favor of just wanting to make sure Kellin was really okay. Seeing the look he got from Luke, he shook his head, waving his hand dismissively, figuring that one way to prove that he didn't plan on telling anybody anything about Kellin was to hold to it, to not even tell his friends - even if, so far, there wasn't really anything to tell.

Luke perked up completely when he read Clara’s message, turning to offer her a smile, turning around to text her back. Great! I can’t wait and he meant it, he really did. There was something about Clara, in just a short amount of time, that had easily captured his attention. Luke even felt honoured that Clara would be with him throughout dinner, and Luke found himself eager to make a good impression.

Kellin lifted her head as the bell rang, packing her back as she looked to Clara. “What happened while I was gone, anyway?” She asked quietly. “How did you get Luke’s number?” She raised a curious eyebrow at her best friend.
