Calum breathed out with relief when Zoey opened the window, swearing that seeing her face after the nights that he had to be apart from her always sent such a huge relief through him, because it meant she’d lived through the night. It didn’t make him hate those nights away from her any less, though, because he hated leaving her here, where she could get hurt or worse. Smiling slightly, he moved to climb through the window. “Hey, sweetheart,” he whispered in return, not wanting to be too loud, not wanting to attract attention to them or cause her parents to lash out at her. Cupping her face gently, his eyes scanned her face for any obvious signs of pain or injuries, and he shifted to press a loving kiss to her lips. “I missed you, too. They were okay. They asked about you.” He smiled slightly, because he knew his parents loved Zoey as much as he did. Sliding his hands from her face to her shoulders, then lower to her hands, he slid his fingers through hers and lifted her hands to kiss her knuckles, though he paused, frowning gently when he saw the dark bruises around her wrists. “Babe, what happened?” he asked gently, shifting instead to kiss the bruises, watching her with concern before he slid his arms around her gently, protectively, and drew her to his chest. “Are you okay?
Blair smiled weakly after receiving Luke’s affection, at least glad that, through all the hell of her life, she always had Luke as her beacon of hope, her light in all the darkness. “I missed you,” she whispered quietly, honestly, because nothing in the world could compare to the comfort Luke brought her or the love she felt for him. She blinked, though, when she heard his question, her heart aching with the frown on his features and, dropping her gaze to her arms, she quickly adjusted her sleeves to hide the bruises, not wanting to trouble Luke with them. “Nothing, really. Just a misunderstanding.” Still, once she was in Luke’s arms, she breathed out her anxieties, swearing she never felt more at peace than she did when she was in his arms. Sliding her arms around him in return, she let her fingers curl into his shirt, desperate to stay close to him, near him, to feel his presence and comfort.
