    I know it hurts
    It’s hard to breathe sometimes
    These nights are long
You’ve lost the will to fight
    Is anybody out there?
Can you lead me to the light?
    Is anybody out there?
Tell me it’ll all be alright

Zoey was suspicious of the silence. They'd been arguing all morning, and Zoey figured that they both must of passed out, because silence in the Talbot house was incredibly rare. Glancing at the fresh bruises around her wrists - formed in the shape of finger and hand prints, Zoey exhaled and toyed with her lower lip, not trusting her situation to let her guard down just yet. Running a hand through her hair, she stood from where she sat, cross-legged on her bed, and grabbed a book from her shelf, one that was tattered and ready to break, one that she'd read over and over because it was the only pass time she knew.

Luke silently pushed open the gate leading up to the front door of the Keys' household. But Luke wasn't going to knock, Luke wasn't even going to enter through the front door, as dishonest as he knew that was. Looking back to his car to lock it, Luke took a deep breath and listened closely as he walked up the garden path, for any sound that would be a giveaway to Blair's parents being conscious. Hearing nothing but silence, Luke climbed onto the patio roof, being careful to carry himself lightly so he wouldn't draw any attention to his movements, and he knocked lightly on Blair's window, twice, indicating it was him.

Calum climbed out of his car after parking it, locking the door carefully behind himself before he headed up to the Talbots’ household. His eyes scanned the house for a moment, as if the house itself would announce whether anything had happened to Zoey through the night. Usually, Zoey would stay at his house at night, so that he knew she was safe, but the night before, he'd been busy at his parents', so he hadn't been able to come get her. Worried about her, he moved to climb up the side of the house to get to the roof, as quietly as possible, and he cautiously moved over to Zoey's window, tapping lightly against the glass, just needing to see her, eager to see her.

Blair listened quietly to the silence in the house, absent-mindedly rubbing at her shoulder, her shoulder aching from the bruises and the fact that her father had twisted her arm behind her back earlier. On edge, she moved to her bed, sitting down as she tried to relax, but she could feel herself tense with every creak in the house. When she heard the taps at her window, though, she knew exactly who it would be, and she crawled to the end of her bed to open the window for Luke, her heart swelling. “Hey,” she whispered, offering a small smile, “I missed you.”

Zoey focused on her book as she listened out for any sounds around the house, her mind not able to absorb any of the words she was reading. She had read this book a million times anyway; and could probably recite it by heart if someone asked her to. Running a hand through her hair, Zoey jumped slightly as a soft tap came from her window, and she sighed, knowing it was only Calum. Shifting off her bed, Zoey treaded carefully across her bedroom, opening her curtains and the window, offering her boyfriend a smile. "Hi babe," she whispered quietly, smiling weakly, moving so he could get in. "I missed you. How were your parents?" She asked.

Luke smiled at Blair as she opened the window. "Hey, gorgeous girl." He murmured, pressing a kiss to her forehead before climbing into her room, landing on the bed so he didn't make a sound. Studying her for any obvious injuries, Luke frowned as he saw a hand mark, black and blue, on her arm, and he just knew that was from her father - the print that was bruising was too big to belong to a woman. "What happened last night?" He asked quietly, wrapping his arms around her waist protectively, pulling her to his chest as he kissed the top of his head. He hated leaving her alone at any given time, but when he couldn't spend a night with her, it made him anxious, in case he parents overstepped any boundaries and killed her - and thinking that thought, Luke frowned, burying his face into her hair.

Calum breathed out with relief when Zoey opened the window, swearing that seeing her face after the nights that he had to be apart from her always sent such a huge relief through him, because it meant she’d lived through the night. It didn’t make him hate those nights away from her any less, though, because he hated leaving her here, where she could get hurt or worse. Smiling slightly, he moved to climb through the window. “Hey, sweetheart,” he whispered in return, not wanting to be too loud, not wanting to attract attention to them or cause her parents to lash out at her. Cupping her face gently, his eyes scanned her face for any obvious signs of pain or injuries, and he shifted to press a loving kiss to her lips. “I missed you, too. They were okay. They asked about you.” He smiled slightly, because he knew his parents loved Zoey as much as he did. Sliding his hands from her face to her shoulders, then lower to her hands, he slid his fingers through hers and lifted her hands to kiss her knuckles, though he paused, frowning gently when he saw the dark bruises around her wrists. “Babe, what happened?” he asked gently, shifting instead to kiss the bruises, watching her with concern before he slid his arms around her gently, protectively, and drew her to his chest. “Are you okay?

Blair smiled weakly after receiving Luke’s affection, at least glad that, through all the hell of her life, she always had Luke as her beacon of hope, her light in all the darkness. “I missed you,” she whispered quietly, honestly, because nothing in the world could compare to the comfort Luke brought her or the love she felt for him. She blinked, though, when she heard his question, her heart aching with the frown on his features and, dropping her gaze to her arms, she quickly adjusted her sleeves to hide the bruises, not wanting to trouble Luke with them. “Nothing, really. Just a misunderstanding.” Still, once she was in Luke’s arms, she breathed out her anxieties, swearing she never felt more at peace than she did when she was in his arms. Sliding her arms around him in return, she let her fingers curl into his shirt, desperate to stay close to him, near him, to feel his presence and comfort.

Zoey smiled weakly as Calum pressed a kiss to her lips - but she could feel the affection, and Calum's love always amazed her, and it always took her breath away. "I love you, babe." She told him gently, but she smiled with his response. "I miss them." She said honestly - she had been cared for by Calum's parents, and the kindness they had shown Zoey in the past left a lasting impression. Pulling away from Calum slightly to interlock their fingers properly, Zoey paused when she noticed Calum frown and she internally groaned. "Don't ask questions Calum, please." Zoey begged, her voice suddenly meek, not wanting to drag Calum into her mess constantly. "It was just a misunderstanding." She reassured him as he kissed the bruises her Father had left. When Calum wrapped his arms around her, pulling her to his chest, Zoey nuzzled into Calum's embrace and nodded. "I'm fine."

Luke kissed the top of Blair's head, taking comfort in the fact that she was there, in his arms, speaking to him. "I missed you too, baby. I'm here now." He told her, nuzzling into her once more, but the more Luke thought that it could be a bruise one night and a wound the next made him nervous. Rubbing Blair's back, Luke hummed quietly. "I have a proposal for you, Blair." He told her, pulling away and chewing anxiously on his lip, looking down at her arms once more - her sleeves had readjusted, showing him the dark bruises. Luke had seen enough, Luke knew enough, and he hated himself for not proposing this sooner. "I love you. And I want you to move in with me."

Calum smiled slightly when he heard Zoey’s words and he ran his fingers through her hair gently, examining her. “I love you, too. And they miss you, too, they always wanna know how you are,” he murmured quietly. He knew how much his parents loved her, he knew they showed her more love than her own parents did. The thought made his heart ache slightly, because Zoey deserved better than what she got from her family. When she interlocked their fingers, his eyes ran over her features, though his expression softened. “I can’t help it, baby. I love you and I hate that you have to experience this.” And, more than anything, he wanted to fix it, to protect her, and he held her close when he felt her nuzzle into him, rubbing her back gently before he chewed on his lip in thought. He couldn’t waste another moment, he couldn’t risk something worse happening to Zoey. “How about you just move in with me?” he murmured eventually, pulling back to rest his forehead against hers, running his fingers through her hair. “You’ll be safe there, and you’ll be with me, and all I want in this world is to protect and love you, Zoey.”

Blair breathed out quietly when she felt Luke kiss the top of her head, relaxing in his embrace, and swearing no place in the world felt as safe as his arms. “I’m glad you’re here,” she admitted quietly, burying her face against him, letting herself be comforted by the feeling of Luke rubbing her back, though she blinked when Luke pulled away, peering up at him as he began to speak. When she saw his attention drop to her arms, she quickly pulled her sleeves down again, adjusting them to hide the bruises, though she paused when she heard his suggestion. “What?” she asked with shock, staring at him. “Are you sure? What if my parents try to hurt you?”

Zoey smiled up at Calum weakly as he ran his fingers through her hair, but focusing on their interlocked fingers, Zoey exhaled quietly, not wanting to worry Calum in any way. Listening closely to Calum speak, Zoey appreciated just how much Calum's voice helped soothe her, whether he was speaking or singing, Zoey could listen to him all day. "I love you too, Cal." She promised with a small smile. "But I'm okay, I swear." When she felt Calum's forehead against hers, Zoey blinked with Calum's words, blinking in surprise. "Wait, what?" She asked, suddenly pulling away. "Calum, I - what if they hurt you?" She frowned with worry. "I'd love to, you know I would, but Calum, this is a dangerous move." She looked over her shoulder in worry, feeling her heart race. "Are you really sure about this?"

Luke felt Blair relax into his hold, and he was so glad he could offer her that refuge, somewhere where she could feel safe, warm, loved, even for a moment. "I'm glad I'm here." Luke murmured into her hair, nuzzling into her as Blair buried her face against him, rubbing her back in soothing circular motions just to make sure that she felt a little better, at least. Seeing her adjust her sleeves, Luke sighed, gently taking her hands and lifting her sleeves. "Don't you dare," Luke warned gently. "I love every part of you, I love you, and these monsters, they don't deserve you." Luke frowned at Blair's bedroom door, as if her Father was listening in. Focusing back on Blair though, Luke ran his fingers through her hair gently, kissing her forehead. "I'd rather get hurt and see you out of here for good then see you collect more bruises." Luke admitted. "Besides, he'll probably be drunk and I'll probably have the upper hand. But don't you worry about me, okay? So, what do you say?"

Calum’s expression softened with hearing Zoey tell him she loved him, swearing he could listen to her voice forever, that hearing her say something like that always sent this amazing warmth through him, igniting his heart in all the best ways. Still, as she continued to speak, he smiled and shook his head, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips in hopes of assuring her. “They won’t,” he promised quietly, sliding his arms around her to hold her close to himself, rubbing her back gently. “I’m stronger than I look, love. And I’d do anything and everything to protect you and keep you safe. So, getting you out of here - I should have done it so much sooner, and I need to do it now, so you never have to get hurt again. So, yeah, I’m absolutely sure of this. I’m more sure than I’ve ever been.”

Blair could feel her eyes water slightly as she listened to Luke, finding it hard to understand and believe that somebody as amazing as Luke existed and was a part of her life in all the best ways. She didn’t know what she’d done to deserve him, but she was so very grateful that she had him there with her. “I love you, too, Luke,” she murmured quietly, wiping at her eyes, but she relaxed as Luke ran his fingers through her hair, even more so when he placed a kiss to her forehead. “Are you… Are you sure?” She lifted her gaze, watching him. “I’d never forgive myself if you got hurt because of me, Luke…”

Zoey's voice silenced as Calum pressed a gentle kiss to her lips, and curling her fingers into the material of his shirt, Zoey's eyes closed in a silent prayer that her parents wouldn't hurt the one thing in her life that mattered the most. As she felt his hands along her back, Zoey's lower lip trembled, and she nodded, biting her lip to stop herself breaking. "I just don't want them to hurt you..." Zoey murmured, ducking her head. "If we're doing this, then we're doing this fast. The faster we leave, the faster we're out of danger." Zoey looked to Calum with determination then.

Luke frowned softly as he saw Blair's eyes tear up, and he couldn't help but wrap his arms around her middle, being careful not to squeeze; in case she had injuries in places he couldn't obviously see. Pressing a sweet kiss to the top of Blair's head, Luke closed his eyes and exhaled his worry. "Listen to me." Luke warned, voice calm and expression gentle, wanting to ensure that Blair knew that he would never hurt her, he would never let anyone else hurt her. And as Blair wiped her eyes, Luke pulled away - leaving very little space between them - to gently run his thumbs along the bottom of her eyes to catch any stray tears. "I'm not going to get hurt. I promise. I can't let this happen anymore, Blair, I can't. If anything happened to you and I lost you..." A lump rose up to his throat. "I can't bear the thought."

Calum shook his head slightly, shifting to cup her face to lift her head gently, his eyes locking on hers as he ran his thumbs over her cheeks gently. “They won’t hurt me,” he promised her quietly, gently, his eyes searching hers, hoping that she understood, that she believed it. “And even if they did, I would take a thousand beatings if it meant getting you out of here before they kill you, okay? I can’t… I can’t sit around and do nothing, Zoey, I can’t wait for a day where I get a phone call saying you’re dead, that you were beat to death. I won’t. So we’re getting you out of here right now.” And, when she mentioned doing it fast, he nodded slightly and shifted to kiss her forehead lovingly. “Let’s get your things packed, so we can get you the hell outta here.”

Blair watched Luke as she listened to him, sniffling quietly as she tried to stay calm, tried not to worry, not wanting to make too much noise, afraid of her parents hearing. As Luke spoke, she found herself nodding along gently, quietly, hoping that he was right, that he wouldn’t get hurt. The last thing she ever wanted was for Luke to get hurt because of her, because of a situation he was put in because of her. “Okay,” she murmured quietly, watching him for a few long moments. “I love you, Luke.”
