Imagine if I never messed up
Imagine if we never even broke up
Imagine if I had the power to control the voices in my head
And I could tell them all to shut the fuck up
    ---
And I had the courage hidden somewhere in my heart
To look you in the eye, yeah, yeah

Amirah smiled as she opened the door to her apartment - she had been looking forward to this moment all day. Amirah always hated leaving for work in the mornings, because Ruby would always cry, and the sound and sight alone was enough to make the single mother never go to her boring office job again. But, it paid the bills, it kept a roof over their heads and food in Ruby's belly, and that's all Amirah ever cared for. Seeing her neighbour, Joyce, in the kitchen, Amirah smiled, knowing Ruby was in the living room, watching her usual cartoons. "Thanks for looking after Ruby, Joyce, how much do I owe you?" She asked, offering the woman a kind smile. Ruby was a good girl, Amirah knew that, but Joyce always stepped in to help when Amirah was struggling. "Ruby!" She called with a grin, excited to see her baby girl. "Are we going to see Santa, or not?" She teased.

Luke scrubbed a hand over his face tiredly as he looked at the sheet of lyrics, placed carefully at the table in the center of the room. He, Calum, Michael and Ashton had gotten a good song written in the past hour, and it felt good, but it was tiring. "I could sleep for a week after that, honestly." He grinned, despite himself. Writing was a hobby the band shared, and this song was a guaranteed hit - at least, Luke hoped so. "If anyone destroys that, I'm throwing you in the nearest volcano." He warned, narrowing his eyes at his bandmates, standing from the armchair to grab a Red Bull. He'd need it for the drive home. It wasn't that much of a drive, but still, Luke was afraid of his exhaustion overtaking him. Cracking it open and taking a long gulp, Luke set the tin down again. "Can I leave now? Petunia needs feeding."

Ruby looked up when she heard her mom’s voice and she grinned happily, rushing over. “Momma!” she cheered happily, holding her arms out cheerfully, happy to see that her mother was home. Hearing her question, though, she nodded eagerly. “Yes, please! I’ve been super good!”

Ayla breathed out quietly as she counted her tips for the day - she’d been saving up just for today, and with the tips she’d made, she had enough to take Madison to get pictures with Santa. Smiling with the thought, she made her way into her apartment, peering around. “Madison?” she called out, though she smiled at the babysitter, paying her and thanking her for taking care of her daughter, before she focused back on the task at hand. “Let’s get ready to go see Santa, yeah?”

Calum chuckled quietly as he stood up, stretching his arms out slightly. “Yeah, I think it’s about time we all get out of here,” he admitted with a nod, looking to the others, who all nodded, before he looked to Luke. “Go on, get out of here.” He waved his friend off, though he, admittedly, was the first one to leave the studio. A part of him wasn’t looking forward to heading home, though, with only Duke as company - but this was the life he’d chosen, he’d given up the woman who’d made him happiest long ago.

Amirah's joyful smile only widened as Ruby rushed over, and crouching down, Amirah lifted Ruby quickly, hugging the toddler tightly, burying her face into her baby's dark hair - it was a little unfair, really, Amirah had carried Ruby for nine months only for her to come out looking exactly like Calum, the man she loved once, the man she still loved - the man who didn't know he had the most beautiful little girl. "Hi, baby girl!" Amirah laughed, pressing her forehead to her daughter's, still amazed by her existence. "I know, you've been the greatest, I can't wait to tell Santa all about you!" Amirah squeezed her daughter before placing her down again. "Go and get your coat on and then we can get going."

Madison lifted her head as she heard the sound of her Momma's voice. "Momma!" Madison cheered, running over to her mother to wrap her arms happily around her legs, having missed her already. "I missed you, Momma." Madison looked up to Ayla then with Luke's very own blue eyes. "I can't wait to see Santa, I've been really good this year!" Madison giggled.

Luke couldn't help but think of the isolation he faced while at home, with no one else but Petunia to keep him company through the dark December nights, and he pulled a face of disappointment, because he didn't want to go home to silence. "Actually, Cal, I remembered I need to go to the mall to get something, you wanna come with me?" Luke asked, finishing the rest of his Red Bull, blond curls tied into a bun at the top of his head. "Would beat being home alone, plus I need to get a Christmas present for my Mum."

Ruby grinned and nodded. “Okay, momma!” she cheered happily, quickly moving to get her coat, trying to tug it on herself, eager to go out to see Santa with her mom, eager to spend time with her mom at all because her mom was busy with work a lot. Coming back, she grinned. “All ready, momma!”

Ayla smiled slightly, watching Madison, and she shifted, crouching down to cup Madison’s face, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I missed you, too, sweetheart,” she told her quietly before engulfing her in a hug. She hated being away from her daughter, but she knew she had to work as much as she could, to ensure Madison had a good life. “And I’ll tell Santa just how good you’ve been, he’ll be so proud.” Grinning, she turned her daughter around. “Now, go on, go get your jacket and your boots and we’ll get going.”

Calum chewed on his lip as he thought about how this Christmas would go. He didn’t have any big plans, mostly certain he’d just hang out at home, relax, drink hot cocoa, try not to think about how lonely it would be. He knew a part of him would think about the better Christmases he’d had, the ones shared with Amirah, but he forced those thoughts away when he heard Luke, and he looked over, offering a small nod. “Sure, why not,” he decided eventually, grateful for the distraction, though he had no intentions of mentioning it. “Let’s go.”
