Aerith's cheeks were still bright red as she watched him answer her question, and when he stood abruptly and began to stammer, she frowned, her stomach filling with dread as she worried that she had said something wrong, or that he had realized that she was dumb and that he didn't want to marry her anymore. "Alright, I suppose that's a good idea.." She said as she stood, although she made sure to stand a bit further from him, unable to even bring herself to look him in the eye. "I.. I'm sorry that I'm dumb, and don't know things that I'm supposed to, and that I'm not pretty or popular.. I-If you don't want to marry me anymore, it's fine, and I understand, and I can still go talk to Elwin and convince him to let you stay, or I can sneak you back out of the castle and have Ceren bring you home.." She spoke quickly, suddenly feeling very self-conscious as she spoke her fears, glancing up at him for a moment before looking back down at the floor as she shuffled her feet.
Elwin smiled as he held her in his arms, happy to have her with him. He felt incredibly lucky that he was going to marry her, his best friend, and if the Council would have allowed it, he would have married her right that afternoon. He chuckled a little and nodded in agreement, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "We do have small families. But maybe a bigger one would be nice." He gave her an odd look though when she mentioned that they could have twelve children if they started now, laughing a bit awkwardly. "As much as I would love to have twelve by the time you are thirty, I don't think the Council would approve if we... you know... before the marriage."

As soon as Aerith began to apologize, Nyrel winced, knowing he’d messed up. He couldn’t take back how he’d already phrased things, but he stepped closer to her and took her hands now, letting out a breath so he could hopefully fix things. “Aerith, you’re smart, beautiful, and I couldn’t care less how popular or unpopular you are. What attracted me to you in the first place is how honest and true to yourself you are, despite what others may say about it, and how smart and observant you are. That’s still true now, and I love you. That means I’m not taking back my proposal, and we’re getting married at some point unless you’re the one backing out. I’m just... uncomfortable trying to explain all of this. I thought you would know it. It’s okay that you don’t, but since you probably should, maybe you should talk to Ceren? Just to find out what you don’t know and understand it better. It’s... well, it’s stuff a person getting married should be aware of. And I can try to explain, but I figured it might be a little less awkward with Ceren and she might be able to explain better since she’s a healer.” He searched her expression, hoping she understood where he was coming from now.
“That’s what I thought,” Ceren agreed with a smile, glad he could understand where some of her thoughts had come from. It didn’t necessarily mean she wanted a big family right that moment, but it seemed like a nice thing to look forward to later on. She gave Elwin a curious look when he started to act a little oddly, though as he spoke, she realized what happened. “No, I didn’t mean it like that!” She denied immediately, sitting up straight in her seat with wide eyes and a red face. “It was a joke, El!” Was she really serious so often that he couldn’t tell when she was trying to joke?

Aerith blushed as he took her hands, but she looked up into his eyes as he spoke to her, nodding a little in understanding as he suggested that she go speak to Ceren. That sounded reasonable enough, and Ceren for sure would know about this kind of thing. Once everything was settled she gave his hands a squeeze before stepping forward and wrapping her arms around him tightly, burying her face in his chest. "I love you too.. I'm sorry that I made you uncomfortable." She mumbled into his shirt, squeezing him a little in her arms. "Am I still allowed to hold your hand?" She asked after a moment, looking up at him sheepishly, worried that he might say no, although she didn't think he would.
Elwin laughed a little in relief as she explained that she had been joking, drawing her back and pressing a kiss to her lips as he squeezed her in his arms. "It's fine, Ceren. I'm just messing with you.. Although you should work on your timing for your jokes, I'd hate for someone who knows you less than I do to overhear you and think you are serious."

When Aerith seemed to settle and moved in for a hug, Nyrel breathed a sigh of relief and wrapped her in his arms. In the future, he needed to keep in mind that she liked to blame herself for things and try to make sure she understood when his actions had nothing to do with her. “You didn’t make me uncomfortable. Just concerned,” he assured her, kissing the top of her head. When she pulled back to ask if she could hold his hand though, he had to stop himself from laughing in surprise at the innocence of the question, and instead, his expression settled into a grin. “Of course,” he said, pulling out of their hug to take both of her hands in his. “You can hold my hand anytime you want—not just when you’re injured or upset.”
Ceren was a little stiff at first when Elwin tried to pull her back to him, though when he kissed her and explained that he was messing with her, she relaxed and offered a kiss in return. “I thought it was okay,” she sighed, leaning her head against his shoulder. “This is why I don’t make jokes. I think it’s funny, but the other person stares at me like I’ve lost my mind. You’re going to have to stop me if I ever try it again.”

Aerith smiled a little as she felt him kiss the top of her head, giving his hands a squeeze as she looked up at him, happy to see him smiling again. "I'm glad.. I like holding your hand." She smiled a little, hesitating for a moment before standing on her toes to press a kiss to his lips, her cheeks reddening again once she pulled away. "Sorry.." she murmured, although she didn't mean it at all.
"No, I like your jokes." Elwin protested, frowning a little as he pressed a kiss to her cheek. "You just spend so much time working and being serious, that no one gets to see you be you. You have to learn to take it easy, make friends other than Aerith and I and the healers." He suggested, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

Nyrel gladly accepted the kiss, though Aerith surprised him when she blushed and apologized for it after the fact. He responded by stepping closer and giving her a soft, lingering kiss in return, at the end of which, he pulled back with a smile. “Another perk of being engaged is that we can kiss whenever we want too,” he said, and in an impulse of mischievousness, winked as he added, “In fact, I encourage it.”
As Elwin claimed to like her jokes, Ceren gave him a dubious look, unconvinced that was really true. When he mentioned making new friends though, she wrinkled her nose. “I have six friends now though. How many more could I need? I have you guys, and you know me, and I like you and trust you. That seems like enough to me.” Here she offered him a smile and kissed his cheek. “Especially since I used to only have two. Six is a lot by comparison.”

Aerith blushed as he stepped forward to kiss her, pleasantly surprised by the action. And when he winked at her and told her to kiss him whenever she wanted, she nearly considered jumping into his arms and kissing him again, but then she remembered that they had to go speak with Elwin and Ceren, and so she settled on squeezing his hands and pressing a kiss to his cheek. "I'll take you up on that later, I promise. But for now we need to go see Elwin." She said with a little sigh before turning to lead him out of the room.
Elwin could not help but laugh at the look she gave him, giving her hands a squeeze in reassurance. "I'm not kidding! I do like your jokes. And I'm not saying you need to make more best friends, but maybe just open yourself more to people in general. You'll be Queen soon enough, and you'll have to get used to talking to people." He smiled, pressing a kids to her cheek.

Nyrel squeezed her hand in return, accepting her promise, and let out a breath. “Okay, lets do this.” She led the way through the castle halls, no guard attempting to stop them because of her position, and after checking the infirmary for Ceren, then her rooms, Aerith led the way to Elwin’s office. He would’ve stopped and knocked, personally, but she just left herself in.
Ceren still wasn’t sure she believed him, but she let it go, a little smile forming in answer to his laugh, though that was overtaken by a groan when he mentioned getting used to talking to people. Despite their semi-serious conversation, a playful mood had somehow emerged between them, and Ceren acted on it both with the groan and as curled into his side and pressed her face into his shirt. “No more people! Is it too late to be your secret wife?” It was obviously a joke, despite her recent resolve not to make anymore.

Before Elwin could answer though, the door suddenly opened. Even if Ceren hadn’t been in the process of sitting up in her chair on instinct, she would’ve when she saw who entered the office—Aerith, looking happier than Ceren had seen her in a year, holding Nyrel’s hand. He actually looked nervous, though there was a happiness there that she hadn’t seen when she’d left him in the forest. Ceren quickly took Elwin’s hand and blurted, “I snuck him in. And I gave Aerith her letters and told her where he was. It was my idea. Nyrel didn’t want to come to the castle and make you angry, but I talked him into it, since Aerith hadn’t gotten his letters. I already told you I think he’s changed, and I wanted Aerith to be able to make her own decision about him too.”

Aerith had hesitated for just a moment before opening Elwin's door, turning to cup Nyrel's cheeks in her hands as she pressed a loving kiss to his lips, a bit nervous that Elwin would send him away or lock him up, and that she wouldn't be able to do it again. As she entered her grip on his hand tightened, trying her best to look innocent, but she mostly just seemed nervous. She was about to speak when Ceren cut her off, a little frown forming on her lips as she listened to Ceren explain everything to Elwin.

Elwin, of course, looked angry. He hadn't been surprised to see Aerith, but Nyrel certainly was a shock, but what was more was the fact that he and Aerith were holding hands. He did notice how happy Aerith seemed to be, behind the obvious nervousness, but he pushed that thought aside as he listened to Ceren quickly explain the situation, frowning deeply up at her. "Ceren, I thought we had agreed to keep those letters from Aerith, for her own sake. And thinking that he has changed is one thing, but bringing him back here, before he has had a chance to prove himself and without my permission?" He frowned, more than a little hurt that Ceren had gone behind his back about it, turning his attention to Nyrel, who he only glared at. "I suppose you want all of your titles back?" he said rather bitterly. Even if Nyrel had changed, he couldn't excuse the fact that he had been hitting Ceren for years, and he still worried that whatever was going on between him and Aerith was all fake.

Ceren knew Elwin was hurt, and if he’d been angry, he’d have good reason. She had good reason too though. “I thought it was the right thing to do for a while, but after I saw Nyrel and talked to him, I saw how miserable he was and realized how much Aerith meant to him. And she was just as miserable. I never brought him back here so he could stay either. I just wanted him and Aerith to have a chance to figure out where they stood with each other. We arranged for him to be taken back tonight if she beat him up or sent him back or whatever. I actually thought you’d find out after he was on his way back...” Except Nyrel was standing there with Aerith, neither of whom had said a word so far.

Nyrel was prepared for animosity and accusations—less so for Ceren trying to take the blame for everything, though especially after what he put her through, her support meant a lot. So, when Elwin asked about his titles, he shook his head. “No. They’re better off with Ceren. She’s managed things fine as the Baroness so far, though if she ever wanted advice, I’d give it, but it’s obvious having that weight on my shoulders wasn’t good for me, and I don’t want to make the same mistakes again. I’m only asking to be allowed to stay at the castle, in whatever capacity you see fit. Make me a stable boy or Ceren’s personal servant, to make up for what I did. I just want to stay, because I love Aerith, and I don’t want to be away from her again. Ban me from social events, assign me to whatever position you deem fit, I just ask to be allowed to stay here.”

Elwin was surprised to hear that they had planned to have him leave later that evening, and was glad that the arrangements had already been made, so that he wouldn't have to worry about making them himself. However, as he listened to Nyrel speak he couldn't help but believe that he may have changed. The old Nyrel would never have passed up the opportunity to have his titles back, and wouldn't have resorted to begging to be a stable boy or Ceren's assistant in order to stay. And when he said that he loved Aerith... He hated to admit it, but Elwin could tell he wasn't lying, and by the way Aerith looked, it was obvious that she was in love with him too.

Before he could answer Nyrel and Ceren, Aerith spoke up finally, still looking rather nervous, but she had managed to find the words she wanted to say. "You were wrong to send him away, Elwin.. I mean, what he did to Ceren wasn't excusable, and I know that you had to.. But he wasn't messing with my feelings then, and I know that he isn't now. Please let him stay. I promise I'll be responsible if he does anything, and I'll take the blame for it. But, if you insist on sending him back to Ashwick.. then I'm going with him. Because we're going to be married, and I don't want to be away from him anymore, even if I have to give up being one of your advisors, and leaving you and Ceren and the castle." She said nervously, and although she looked sad about the prospect of leaving, she would if she had to, in order to be with Nyrel.

Ceren kept half of her attention on Elwin, trying to gauge how he felt about everything and what he might decide, based on everything he was being told, but her gaze snapped to Aerith and Nyrel at the word ‘married’. Despite her only having left Nyrel a couple of hours ago, he didn’t look surprised at Aerith’s declaration. “When did this happen?” she demanded.

Nyrel rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment at the intense stare Ceren was giving him. “Maybe an hour ago? In the forest.” His gaze returned to Elwin. “That’s another reason I want to stay. I know how much you two mean to Aerith, and being here. I just... didn’t want you to think I asked her to marry me so I could stay. I was kind of hoping it wouldn’t get mentioned until I had a ring to make it official.” Saying this, he squeezed Aerith’s hand gently, silently letting her know that it was fine and hoping she wouldn’t think she’d done something wrong. Now it was just a matter of awaiting his judgement.

Aerith blushed a little when Ceren seemed angry, and even more so when Nyrel confessed that he hadn't been intending to tell Ceren and Aerith, looking up at him as he squeezed her hand, mouthing a soft "Sorry" before turning back to Ceren and Aerith. "I know it seems fast, Ceren, but I want to marry him, and I know he didn't do it just to stay here, I promise. Please, Elwin?" She asked, biting her lip as she looked at her friends.

Elwin was just as surprised as Ceren when Aerith had mentioned that she planned to marry Nyrel, and although it seemed rushed to him, he had never seen her talk about getting married, or boys in general, so to see her standing there, holding Nyrel's hand and looking as happy as she did.. He let out a long sigh, running a hand over his face as he thought before looking sternly at Nyrel. "Fine," he said reluctantly, looking to Ceren and then Aerith. "He can stay. But if I catch wind of him doing anything suspicious, he goes back to Ashwick."

Aerith beamed, releasing Nyrel's hand to hurry across the room to hug Elwin and Ceren, pressing a kiss to each of their cheeks. "Thank you thank you thank you."

Nyrel was tense waiting for Elwin's answer, knowing this was a long-shot, even with Ceren and Aerith on his side, so when it was decided that he could stay, his shoulders sagged, and he breathed a sigh of relief even as Aerith launched across the room to thank her friends. He stayed back, not attempting to join in on the hugs and kisses, but he watched with a little smile, and when he caught Elwin's eye, said "thank you", even knowing the decision was most likely just for Aerith's sake.

Ceren laughed as Aerith rushed over to hug and kiss her and Elwin, glad to see her friend so happy. "It's a little fast, but you always do things your way anyway," she said, hugging Aerith back. "Really, I just can't believe you're getting married, and to my brother of all people!" She never would've imagined them together if it hadn't happened.

Elwin chuckled a little as Aerith hugged him and kissed his cheek, returning her hug as he smiled at her. "I'm just glad you're not sulking anymore. This means that you can terrorize Nyrel, and not me." He said, glancing over at Nyrel as the other man thanked him, giving him a little nod before turning back to his friends and their conversation.

Aerith looked at Ceren a bit sheepishly when she said that things had happened too fast, and that she couldn't believe that she would be marrying her brother. "I don't know.. I think that if he had stayed, or if I had been able to read his letters sooner, it would have happened.. Besides, you two got engaged pretty quickly, so why can't I?" She knew that her situation was different, but didn't like all of the attention and criticism on her, so she threw it back at them as she moved back over to stand beside Nyrel. "I can show him to his old room, if you can arrange for his things to be brought from Ashwick, Ceren.. You two seemed busy with important things before we came in, so we'll leave you alone now." In truth she just really wanted to kiss Nyrel, but didn't want to do it in front of Ceren or Elwin, so she took Nyrel's hand to attempt to hurry out of the room before they got stuck in a long conversation.

Ceren went quiet, having the feeling that Aerith was getting defensive, and glanced behind her to Nyrel, who was hanging back. He didn't look particularly unhappy or awkward though, just watching with a little smile. She understood why he hung back--this didn't mean he and Elwin were on good terms--but when she thought to get up and give him a hug too, Aerith was already at his side again, claiming his hand and apparently ready to leave. "Umm, yeah, I can do that," she said. "You... sure you don't want to stay?" There was a part of her that wondered if maybe she'd upset Aerith and now her friend was mad at her--though she tried to argue that it was Aerith, and she'd know if that happened. Still, a part of her wondered.

Aerith trying to escape all of a sudden had Nyrel raising an eyebrow at her, though he managed to stop her before she could drag him out of the room. "Wait. Weren't you going to talk to Ceren?" he asked, afraid she'd forget if he didn't remind her about it now. "The talk didn't have to be now, but at the very least, he'd feel better if she arranged to meet Ceren about it at some point.

Aerith frowned as Nyrel kept her from simply leaving, and she looked back at Ceren, noticing how upset she seemed to be. She hadn't meant anything by rushing out so quickly, but even though she hadn't had a lot of time to process her feelings, she was upset with Elwin and Ceren for lying to her about Nyrel and keeping his letters from her for so long. She had partially forgiven them because Ceren had brought him back and Elwin had allowed him to stay, but she still didn't like how they had disregarded her feelings and opinion on the matter, and had just done things without asking her.

She nodded a little when Nyrel mentioned her needing to talk to Ceren, looking back over at her friend, a faint blush tinging her cheeks, although it was so faint she easily could have dismissed it as nothing. "Oh, yeah.. Um, can I talk to you later Ceren, in your office?" She asked, shuffling her feet a little anxiously. "Maybe after dinner?"

Elwin didn't like how odd Aerith was acting, it was different from her usual odd behavior. But he could tell she didn't want to talk, and wasn't going to push it, especially not in front of Nyrel. He'd ask Ceren to figure out what was wrong, as she usually had more luck with getting Aerith to express her feelings and talk about what was bothering her than he did. He let out a little sigh, glancing at the time before reluctantly standing. "Unfortunately, I have a meeting with the Council that I need to attend. Ceren, I'll speak with you later. Aerith and Nyrel, stay out of trouble." He warned, mostly joking toward Aerith, but very serious toward Nyrel.

At the mention of talking, Ceren blinked in confusion, and a little concern, but as Aerith mentioned doing so after dinner, she quickly nodded. "Of course! That sounds fine!" The request didn't give her any idea what Aerith wanted to talk about, but whatever it was, it seemed important, even if Nyrel did have to prompt it.

Then Elwin stood and announced his meeting. Ceren felt a little twinge of disappointment that their time together had ended so abruptly, but she pushed it aside as she nodded, standing as well. "Unless you need it to stay here, I can take the rest of this paperwork to my office and work on it there, once I make sure everything's good at the infirmary," she suggested, motioning to the stack of wedding documents she hadn't finished sorting through before they'd gotten sidetracked.

Nyrel guessed the warning to stay out of trouble was mostly for his benefit, considering the look Elwin gave him, but he only responded with a small smile and a "I plan on it." He also took that as everyone wrapping up their little meeting, and after a quick goodbye for Ceren, he and Aerith slipped out of the office. "That went much better than I thought it would," he admitted to her with a little smile.

Aerith nodded a little as Ceren agreed to the meeting, and waved a little at the two of them as Elwin basically dismissed everyone. "Alright, thank you, Elwin and Ceren. See you later." She said as she and Nyrel left Elwin study. She smiled up at Nyrel once they were outside of the study and a little ways down the hall, where she knew that Elwin or Ceren wouldn't stumble upon them, she stood on her toes and pressed a happy, loving kiss to his lips, relieved that he would be able to stay. "I'm happy you're staying, and I'm happy that we're getting married." She smiled up at him, giving his hands a squeeze as she looked up at him. She kind of wanted to ask him if he would stay in her room with her, because he had been gone for so long and she missed him, but after their conversation earlier, she knew that it wouldn't go well, and so she nodded her head down the hall. "Let's get you to your room. We can have dinner, and then I can go talk to Ceren while you rest. I'm sure you're exhausted after your trip."

Elwin smiled and nodded when she asked to take the paperwork with her to her office, pressing a quick kiss to her lips as he gave her hands a squeeze. "Yes, of course. That would be very helpful. If I get away from the Council soon enough, I can come to your office for dinner? Or we can see each other after you speak with Aerith?" He suggested, looking through some of the papers on his desk, picking out the ones that he needed to bring to his meeting, leaving the others strewn across his desk.

When Aerith stopped them a little ways down the hall, Nyrel was surprised—and pleased—to find out it was for a kiss. He returned it, a smile turning up the corners of his mouth as she pulled away. “I am too,” he assured her, squeezing her hand gently, and pressed another brief kiss to her lips. When she mentioned his room, he was at first surprised, then smiled when she mentioned him resting. “We should probably have dinner in your room, honestly, since mine has been abandoned for a year. Everything I own was sent with me to Ashwick, so I imagine it’s rather empty, except for some furniture, and is in desperate need of cleaning. I’m not that tired either, so you won’t have to worry about me falling asleep at your table.” He kissed the top of her head and tugged her hand, gently leading her into a walk again, heading towards the residency wing of the castle. He walked slowly though, since it still hadn’t quite been decided if they’d be heading towards Aerith’s rooms in the royal hall or his rooms, which were relatively close but still elsewhere.
Judging by his offer, Ceren guessed Elwin regretted their time being cut short too, and she nodded amicably at his offer. “How about this? If you miss dinner, I’ll send a note to let you know when Aerith and I are done talking, and you can come whenever you’re free,” she suggested, picking up the paperwork in her stack that she hadn’t gone through yet, and leaving the rest in a neat pile separate from the strewn stacks that covered the rest of Elwin’s desk. She wasn’t trying to stall, knowing he needed to leave, but she did pause to lean up and press a quick kiss to his lips. “Your chair will be waiting for you,” she said with a smile. Much like his office, hers had an extra chair behind the desk that usually went unused and seemed out of place until Elwin visited. It was usually better if she went to him, since that’s where people knew to find him, but sometimes he came to her office and arranged it so any messages sent to his office were rerouted to the infirmary. It was a nice system that allowed them to see each other even on busy days.
