A light snow fall had come down during the night. Xavier had noticed it, he was awake already. More to the point, he was still awake. He was dreading the next day, another day at school. He had had a rough time last year, and was expecting the same again.

The warm waters of his shower, woke him up a bit more, before he pulled on some dark jeans, and t-shirt and hoodie. He also dressed down, hoping that maybe, he wouldn't be noticed at all. He pulled on some shoes, before heading out of his house to head to school.

The air was cold, and the walk a miserable one. Much of the footpath hadn't been cleared of snow, so Xavier's shoes and socks, were well and truly soaked, before he even made it to the school grounds. He headed straight for the library hoping for some solace from the cold.

Xavier noticed one of the students, who had picked on him last year. He was sitting inside the library, just by the doors. Xavier thought better of getting near him, and decided that possibly the best option was to head towards his classroom, Ms Walsh's was supposed to be his teacher this year. Hopefully she'd let him stay in the classroom in the mornings, unlike his teacher from the previous year.
    Mr Wayne Oliver Kilburn
A pattering of snow covered the grass, the early morning sun peaking above the buildings of the urban landscape. Traffic was minimal, and the sidewalks bare at this time of morning. It was too early for anyone to be out and about yet.

Mr Kilburn had just woken up, and was looking out his window, at the recent snow fall. He knew today would be hectic, having to wrangle a whole class of new students, as well as hopefully get some work done. He was both excited and terrified for himself. He straightened his tie, as he prepared to head out into the cold.

Wayne made his way outside to his car, before heading off towards the school. He hoped that he wouldn't get held up. He made it to work on time, and pulled into the park that had been designated for him. He picked up his satchel bag, and wondered towards his classroom.

As the school bell rang Mr Kilburn was expecting most of the students to take awhile before getting to their classes. He had written his name up on the white board, and was currently sitting at his desk paging through the newspaper.

Ms. Bridget Walsh was the youngest teacher at the school, barely over 25, but was kind and bright, and one of the best teachers. That morning, she had arrived early that morning because of the snow, settling at her desk to prepare her lessons for the day and flip through a few pages of a book she had just started. Her hair was pulled into a neat bun, and wearing a pretty light blue blouse and a tan pencil skirt, humming to herself as she read and had a cup of tea to help wake herself up and get ready for the day.
Francis was a bright, intelligent 17 year old at the top of her class. While she loved school, she wanted more of a challenge, and most of her classes bored her, and her teachers didn't provide her much of a challenge. That morning, she arrived at school with everyone else, bundled up in a jacket and scarf because of the snow. After leaving her things in her locker she grabbed what she needed and headed to class, saying a polite good morning to Mr. Kilburn before taking a seat at the front where she pulled a half finished crossword puzzle from the morning newspaper, folding it neatly on her desk before getting to work trying to finish it before the bell rang for the start of class.

    Xavier
Xavier made his way through the classroom door, pleased to see it was unlocked. He looked up from the ground, noticing Ms Walsh. He kept quiet, and slowly made his way over towards her desk. The heating was on in the classroom, and he immediately began to warm up. He smiled softly, "Uh... Ms Walsh?" he began with trepidation. He looked around the room, "would it be okay if I stayed in here before class?" he asked softy. He was a nervous, and quiet kid, but he really wasn't as stupid as his grade's made him out to be, he just hated school.
    Mr Kilburn
Mr Kilburn looked up hearing a student great him, he was glad to see it was Francis. He hadn't known she'd be in his class this year, but most teachers pretty much hoped for it, it always reflected good on them to have the smartest girl in the year in the class. He smiled softly, "Morning Francis, how was your break?" he asked softly.

Mr Kilburn was a teacher that liked to continuously push his students, teach them on the level that they were actually on, rather than stick to merely the curriculum. He wondered what sort of things she might be interested in learning more about, he'd have to figure it out over the next month.

Ms Walsh looked up when she heard Xavier answer, smiling kindly up at him as she nodded, finishing her sip of tea. "Yes, of course. You're more than welcome to wait here for the start of class. Its Xavier, right?" She asked kindly, gesturing for him to take a seat at one of the desks while he waited. "Of course, if you dont want to speak to me, you're not required to."
Francis smiled up at Mr Kilburn as he asked about her break. "It was good. I managed to read about 45 books, although I had been hoping to read 50. Maybe next year. How was your break?" She asked politely. She'd spoken to Mr Kilburn a few times, and was excited to have him as a teacher this year, but didn't know him as well as she knew some other teachers, although she hoped to get to know him over the course of the year.

Xavier nodded lightly, "yeah It's Xavier," he mumbled softly, "thanks," he quickly added. He found his way to the back of the classroom, setting his bag down. He pulled out his folder, beginning to doodle away quietly. He hoped that this year, maybe he wouldn't have to end up doing several peoples homework for them.
Mr Kilburn chuckled, "forty five, that's a lot, any of them you would recommend?" he asked lightly. He smiled looking up from his paper, "my break was fine, uneventful, did the crossword everyday, and a bit of light reading," he said. He put the paper down sighing softly, "did you hear about the accident yesterday?" he asked softly, referring to a story from the paper.

Ms. Walsh smiled and nodded, watching him as he moved to the back of the class to sit until the bell rang, going back to her reading and tea while she also waited. She left him alone during their short time left, telling that he was a quiet type, and she didn't want to make him uncomfortable before school even started. She got up after a while to write her name on the board, along with the week's assignments, preferring to let her students know what was required of them in advance.
Francis hummed a little in thought, nodding with a smile as he asked for any recommendations. "Yes... I'll have to bring you a list, though." She offered, smiling a little as he told her about her break, although she shook her head when he mentioned the accident. "No, I haven't.. My mom normally leaves me the newspaper in the morning, but this morning she hadn't finished reading it and only left me the crossword. What happened?"

Xavier remained sitting, and quickly noted down the assignments once she wrote them up. He flicked back to his doodling, and continued to draw random stuff. He remained quiet, and tried to keep hidden, as the classroom began to fill with students.

As one of his bully's from last year moved to the back and sat right next to him. Xavier, closed his folder, stood up and moved to a different seat on the other side of the room.
"Awh what's the matter Xav? don't want to be friends?" the kid called across the room to him.
Mr Kilburn smiled softly, "please do that," he said lightly. He stood up and carried the paper over to her placing it down, "borrow mine," he said softly. He smiled at her, "once you've read it, we can talk about some of the articles after class if you want," he said.

He believed that even his students could have adult conversations about news stories, and he always liked to hear their opinions on things.

Ms Walsh greeted her students as they came into the classroom, beginning to pass out a few slips of paper to her students, although she frowned deeply when she saw Xavier move seats and heard the taunting, knowing that it was more than it seemed on the surface.

"Mr Abernathy," she started sternly, frowning at the bully. "Im not sure what you were used to last year, but that kind of behavior is not tolerated in my classroom. I would hate to have to send you to the office on the first day."
Francis smiled up at him when he brought her the paper, nodding as she took it and began glancing over the articles. "Thank you, sir. I'd be happy to talk after class." She smiled, although looked up when a few of her friends entered the room, smiling and greeting then as they took their seats next to her.

Xavier kept his head down, taking the paper when she got to him. "thank you miss," he said softly. He smiled up at her, last year his teacher had ignored his situation entirely. He was beginning to believe this year truly could be better.

He read over the paper quickly, before going back to drawing, he already had a decent grasp of the work covered on the paper.
Mr Kilburn nodded, "of course, only if you want to," he said softly. He made his way back to the front of the class and sat down, as the rest of the class poured in.

"Okay class. I know you have just gotten back from break, and are all excited to see each other again, So you have ten minutes to talk and catch up, then I'm going to start my lesson, sound good?" he asked the class.

Ms Walsh nodded, smiling at Xavier before heading to the front of the room to begin her lecture. She went over what would be happening this semester and what she expected from her students, as well as outlining the assignments for this week.
Francis chatted with her friends for a few minutes before turning her attention back to the newspaper, reading a couple of the bigger articles and skimming the rest between taking notes once Mr. Kilburn began his lecture. At the end of class she remained in her seat, ready to talk to Mr. Kilburn about the news.

Xavier closed his folder and looked up, listening to her when she began her lecture. He noted down a few notes. Once she'd finished her lecture, and slipped his things away into his bag. Abernathy came over to him and smirked, "so you going to get two sets of the assignments done?" he asked softly.
Mr Kilburn sat quietly and began trying to learn the students names, as they sat and talked. Then when the time was up, he quietened the class down, "alright times up, now pay attention, you can talk with each other more at recess," he said. He quickly covered the coursework, and the assignments they'd be expected to do, before releasing the class.

He looked up seeing Francis still in her seat, "ah Francis, did you finish reading the paper?" he asked.

Ms Walsh stood by her desk as her students filed out of her classroom, smiling politely and wishing them a good day. She frowned however when she noticed Abernathy speaking to Xavier, knowing something was up by the way they were acting. Once Abernathy had left, she caught Xavier before he could leave, frowning softly as she looked at him.

"Do you know why I make my students fill out these notecards?" She asked, holding up the stack of notecards that her students had been forced to fill out with their names and a few sentences about themselves. "So I am familiar with their handwriting, and know when someone is cheating." She answered herself, looking at Xavier. "I expect Mr Abernathy to do his own work."
Francis nodded with a smile when he asked about the newspaper. "Yes. There were a few interesting stories today. Especially that one about the teacher a few towns over, who got caught messing around with his students." She said, flipping through the paper to find the story she was talking about.

Xavier sighed and shook his head to Abernathy, "not this year, I'd rather focus on my stuff," he said softly. The kid laughed, "you will choose too, eventually," he said before leaving.

Xavier looked up as Ms Walsh came over, "I don't know what you're talking about Ms," he said playing dumb. He knew ratting on the guy would just make things worse, and would prefer to keep his mouth shut. He sighed finishing packing up his own things.
Mr Kilburn nodded softly, "yeah that's a pretty bad thing to do," he said softly. He sat on the desk in front of her, "So why do you think they did it?" he asked her. He was interesting in hearing her take on the situation.

He watched her and waited for her answer. He was glad that teachers who messed with students were being held accountable.

Ms Walsh frowned a little as she listened to Xavier play dumb, knowing well enough to know he was lying. "Are you sure, Xavier? Mr. Abernathy isn't as discrete as he thinks he is." She offered him a kind smile, moving back over to her desk. "Have a good rest of your day, Xavier."
Francis hummed a little in through, shrugging a little at his question. "I'm not sure. The paper said that the student was over 18, but it was in exchange for higher grades, which isn't really excusable. If it was because they liked each other, I could see it maybe being ok.. But it's still not great." She explained.

Xavier smiled weakly, "It's best if I don't say anything," he admitted quietly. He blushed when she smiled back at him, before putting his head down and quickly packing up his things. "I'll try to Ms, thanks," he said softly as he made his way to the door. "Thanks for an interesting lesson," he added before leaving.
Mr Kilburn nodded listening to her, "So you think that the issue lies in the exchange of sex for better grades, and the abuse of the trust?" he commented softly. He sat in his chair thinking for a moment, "would you think it was fine, say if the student was no longer that teacher's student, say after they graduated?" he asked her.

Ms Walsh smiled as she watched him leave, waving a little before turning her attention back to her work, needing to prepare her next lesson. "You're welcome, Xavier. See you around." She called after him.
Francis nodded a little as he spoke, thinking for a moment before responding. "Yeah, I think that's fine. If the student has graduated, and is no longer the pupil of the teacher, then their relationship wouldn't be a problem." She explained, looking over at him. "What about you? What do you think about it?"

Xavier nodded, and left heading out to recess. He searched for a place, to hide away from Abernathy. He found a secluded spot, under one of the trees around the back of the grounds. It was a spot, students weren't supposed to be, during recess. But it was the only place Xavier could find.
Mr Kilburn thought for a moment, "Well, my concern lies in the predatory nature, that is usually present in such a relationship, I worry that once the student in question grows older, is that going to cause the teacher to no longer be interested, and move onto the next student," he said softly. He smiled weakly, "But I agree with you, if the student is no longer a pupil, and the relationship is a genuine one, were both parties are in love, there shouldn't be a problem," he articulated.

Ms Walsh remained inside for most of the break, but went outside for some fresh air towards the last ten minutes, sitting and chatting with another teacher who had also gone outside. She noticed that Xavier had seemed to wander off into a place where he shouldn't be, but decided to not say anything, figuring that he had gone there to avoid whatever bullies he had, not wanting to get him in trouble for just trying to avoid his bullies.
Francis nodded in agreement. "Yeah, if the teacher has a repeated habit of going after students, then it's a problem, but if the relationship is obviously something real and consensual between both parties, especially if the student is no longer being taught by that teacher, then there isn't really a problem with it. Some people may think it's weird, but there's noting illegal about it as long as the student is of age." She explained, looking up at him with a little smile before looking back down at the newspaper, flipping through to see what else had stood out to her.

Xavier remained where is was, sitting and reading from a book from his bag. He kept looking up and checking he was still alone. When the bell rang for class, Xavier remained where he was, continuing to read. He wasn't really in the mood to deal with Abernathy anymore today, and was considering heading home rather than going to class.
Mr Kilburn nodded at her, he was truly impressed by her mature attitude and how well she articulated her thoughts. He smiled at her, "I should probably let you head off to have a break, but please feel free to come to me with any thoughts or questions you have, I'll do my best to answer them, course related or not," he said with a smile. He moved back to his desk, "keep the paper," he added.
