Haylee sighed softly as she took her seat in the church, looking down in to her lap instead of around at other people. It was times like this she wished she had escaped this god-forsaken town. She had tried, but every time something Drew her back. This place was home. This place was Carter. She felt like everybody watched her with an overwhelming sense of pity and sympathy. "That's the poor girl who lost her brother" she would hear women on the street whisper as they passed her. Hayleee hated that word, lost- it almost insinuated she had misplaced her brother. Like this was all some big game of hide and seek and she was losing.

Of course, her brother was missing, presumed dead. A part of Haylee hoped he was dead, it seemed a better date than any other reason he could vanish for 8 years. Haylee had been 15 when it all happened, a sophmore. Carter had been 17, just about to start his Senior year- except he never got to step through those school halls to start his final year.

Haylee flinched as she felt someone jostle off of her, and looked up suddenly to see somebody in the pew next to her. "Oh. Hey" she whispered gently, seeing Charlie's familiar face. He had been a welcome comfort since the day her brother had gone, almost acting like an absentee sibling.

    **

"You okay? You look a little lost" Charlie asked the brunette with a kind smile. He watched as she nodded trying to reassure him and wrapped an arm around her petite figure giving her a little squeeze. It was clear she had never really moved on.

Of course Charlie often wondered if he had too. Being in college, his thoughts tended to be distant from the matter. Of course he thought of Carter constantly, but in a fond sense of remembrance than in a sad grievance. Being home changed that a little bit. He felt an ache in his heart for his list friend, for Carter's family and the hole in their lives the faced every single morning. He let out a soft sigh and glanced around the room, spotting that familiar fringe coming through the door. He gave a soft wave to Carter's ex letting her know where they we're before turning to face the front again. "Hey Ali" he greeted as she sat down.

"How was your trip home?" He asked softly.

    **

Before she could answer, Haylee's gaze snapped back to them, rejoining the world outside of her head against. "It's weird isn't it?" She asked vaguely, buying on her lip. "A memorial? Seems wrong right? As if we're admitting he's gone forever?" She asked again with a sad laugh as her eyes scanned their faces. The silence was deafening.

Aly has never really lost anyone in her life not like this, death was always unexpected. She never thought it would be someone she used to be so close with, someone she dated. This felt bizarre, like Carter shouldn’t be dead, he was always so resilient. They had their ups and downs but Aly did care deeply about him and his sister Haylee. Now here she was sitting in a memorial. Wondering Carter went from missing to dead. She walked in and went to sit by Haylee. She had flown in from New York to be with her friends during the hard times.

Aly looked up noticing Charlie speak she hadn’t even touched him, all she remembered was that he was Carter’s best friend. Not much else if she was being honest with herself. She mumbled a soft hi before taking a seat. Aly was going to answer but Haylee has began speaking. Aly placed her hands over Haylee’s. Trying to give her some sort of sense of comfort.

Josh was in the middle of a work out when he heard the news about Carter Miller’s disappearance . He felt bad because he knew how much carter and his ex Haylee were close. While Carter and Josh didn’t always got along Josh always thought he was interesting. Few weeks later Josh was in the middle of fixing his motorcycle when he heard the announcement of a memorial. His heart broke for Haylee she was such a sweet and beautiful girl she didn’t deserve this kind of pain.

Josh decided he’d go see her, see how she’s doing though with everything going in he had a good idea. The drive wasn’t long he only lived an hour or so away, he thought back at the last time Josh spoke with Haylee, their break up. It was amicable so they were on good terms. They just thought things were going a little fast and they both needed to “find” themselves.

Haylee took Ally's hands giving them a soft squeeze as she faced forward, leaning in to the older girl slightly. It had taken her some time, but she liked when Aly was around now. She had never really thought her and her brother we're a great couple before. She had appreciated Ally's empathy when Carter went missing, but she could help but find it a little fake at the time.. she had moved on from that now though.

"I really miss him sometimes, you know?" She said softly, letting out a soft sigh as she looked around. The place was really beginning to fill up. Her mum and dad were at the door greeting sympathisers, but Haylee didn't care to shake hands with all of these people. This wasn't a funeral.

    ***

Charlie gave a gentle nod as Haylee spoke and left the two girls to have their moment. He glanced up at the guy standing in the aisle and stood up to let him past, taking a moment to realise who he was. "Woah, hang on there... Where are you off to?" He asked quietly, placing his hand on the boys chest.

"Look Josh, now might not be the best time, talk to her after the memorial okay?" He said shaking his head softly. He really felt like it was up to him tolook out for Haylee now, Aly too even if she didn't want to accept that. He always felt Aly treated him like a bit of an outsider.

Aly knew that Haylee didn’t care for her before she even went out of her way to call Aly some names. Aly has thick skin though she didn’t let Haylee get to her while she dated her brother. She did show support and care when the announcement of his disappearance. She tried to me friendly and caring but she guess not everyone thought she was sincere even though Aly did love the man.

Sly nodded “I miss him too, I know that we had our misunderstandings but I did love him,” she was honest. Sighing sadly as she watched people come in and pay their respects. Aly was always seen as this stuck up girl but she wasn’t like that at all, she was very sweet she just didn’t open up to people Carter was the only person she was really herseldneith.
Josh frowned at a Charlie “take your hands off me” he warned. Josh didn’t like when people got too close to him or put their hands on him. “Where do you think I’m going Day? To talk to Haylee..”

Josh frowned once more “what are you her bodyguard?” He shined him a bit but decided to walk back out. Charlie has always gotten on Josh’s nerves he didn’t like him. As he sat outside trying to think of what he could possibly say to her.

Once the memorial started, Haylee took both Ally's and Charlie's hands in her own squeezing then tightly. She hated absolutely ever seconond of the ceremony, hating how it seemed like people, her parents included seemed so content with deciding that her brother was gone and not coming back. Haylee refused to believe that, she felt there was something left undone. Haylee handn't even realise she was crying until she began to feel people's eyes landing on her as she audibly sobbed.

"Sorry" she muttered to those say around her And tried to pull herself together a little better as they start there staring at photos of her brother. She hardly even noticed the commotion going on next to her.

Charlie pulled his hands off to dude not wanting to start a fight, but he hoped he got the message. ow was not the time for any of this. Josh was relieved as the bot walked off, grateful that he wasnt going to hear a cacaphony of f how heavenly and secret what he had to say was

Aly rubbed Haylee’s back trying to console her “don’t be sorry it’s okay to cry.” She held her hand and squeezed it gently wishing she could be more helpful than she was. Aly has tears running down her face as well, she didn’t want to believe that he was gone. Carter had been such an important part of her life they shared many firsts. She hated to think of life without him even thought they had broken up, they had been good friends.
Josh didn’t want to cause a scene or anything he knew that Haylee would be upset as it is without him coming in and making matters worse. He stayed away just outside waiting dienjt to be over and wondered if maybe this was a bad idea, he wanted to apologize and give her condolences.

Haylee blinked, letting the tears fall silently down her cheeks as she sat there listening. Her parents had asked her to speak at it but she refused. Once the whole thing was over, she stood up smoothing out her dress. She had worn a yellow dress, refusing to wear dark colours. They didn't have a body she wasn't going to believe her brother was dead.

She took in a deep breath and looked at Aly and Charlie. "I'm just going to get some air, I'll be back soon" she told them, and made her way for the front door of the church, collapsing down on to the bench outside.

Charlie looked over at Ali and moved closer to her on the seat. "How you holding up?" He asked her gently. He felt a little bad that she always got shoved aside when it came to Carter, just because they had broken up before he went missing. "I know you guys always had ups and downs, but he was special to you" he said.

    Aly watched as her friend excused herself, Aly stared at her hands sadly. Why did this had to happened and where was the body? What was going on? She was so confused and hurt. She shrugged her shoulders when Charlie started talking to her. Aly didn’t really want to talk to anyone, it had been an exhausting few days. “Yeah..” she stood up, “excuse me..” she said before going to the bathroom to try to clean her face a little she probably looked like a witch with her make up running down her face.[line{

Josh was leaning against the wall still thinking of what to actually say to Haikee, he sighed. Looking up when he heard someone approaching was surprised to see Haylee out here. It must have been over, he hit his lip before speaking up. “Hey.. I’m sorry to hear about Carter “ he said softly. this is not how he envisioned their reunion to happen.

Charlie nodded softly, understanding that she didn't want to talk. He watched as she left and stayed sitting there, just incase she decided she did want to talk at least she would know where he was. He let out a little sigh stretching out his legs. He missed his friend, and he didn't believe Carter could've just vanished like this. He was too well liked and loved his family too much.. he knew deep down something must have happened to him.

    ***

Haylee sat looking down at her shoes, a scowl on her face. "Heard what? He disappeared 8 years ago" she said before looking up, her brows furrowing slightly. This guy's face was vaguely familiar to her. It took a moment or two for her brain to realise. "oh... Hi Josh" she said softly. He looked so different now, with the beard, tattoos and the nose piercing. It had been so long since she last saw him. "Why are you here?"

Aly wanted to be alone with her sadness, she was in the bathroom trying to collect herself. She couldn’t bring her myself to accept his death, like there was no body what if he was still out there. She wiped her tears away, they ended on good terms and she still cared so much for him. People still treated her like she may be a reason he disappeared and that hurt her. Aly walked back and noticed Charlie “why are you still sitting there?”
Josh kept his distance she seemed very angry he should have known better than to sneak up on Haylee. “I’m sorry I know you hate when people just sneak up on you, I didn’t want to interrupt the service...” he sighed. He rubbed the back of his neck “I’ve meant to come sooner but work has been so busy, I wanted to say I’m sorry about Carter,..”

Charlie glanced up as he heard a voice. He looked up into Ally's eyes and shrugged softly "I'm just thinking about everything" he answered simply, turning his attention back to the alter for a moment and taking in a deep breath. "I just can't believe it's been 8 years without him" he commented, rubbing at his jaw. "Life is fucking weird man" he said with a sigh.

    ***

Haylee crossed her arms across her chest, watching Josh fumble over his words as he tried to apologise to her. "Josh please don't try and make excuse, it's been 6 years since you last spoke to me" she said, keeping her eyes firmly on him. She had let go of a lot of her anger she held towards him or so she thought. "what are you sorry about Josh? Nothing has changed since we broke up... And you seemed pretty adamant back then that I needed to give up on thinking he was coming back and move on" she said, echoing his own words from before back to him.

    Aly had her arms crossed, listening to Charlie speak, “yeah, it’s been weird without him..” Aly pushed some of her bangs out of her face to take a look at Charlie “it is..” she wasn’t sure what to say, Aly had never been in this situation she didn’t know what to do or say to comfort people. [line{

Josh took a step back and look at Haylee he knew she had a right to be angry with him. He didn’t think she’d still be like this six years later but doesn’t blame her.. “ well, I came to apologize for everything really, the break up, your brother mostly, I know it’s been hard and I haven’t been the best person.. but I guess my apology doesn’t really mean anything to you so.. I’ll just leave. I’m sorry for showing up here..”
