The heatwave finally cracked in Baltimore as the signs of fall started peaking about. Elise had been back home close to a year, ever since her father passed away. She needed to make sure her mother was fine, but more importantly, she needed a change of scenery. She had lived up in Maine for so long she forgot what normal humans were like. Forgot that 60 degree weather, like the kind they were experiencing wasn’t a heatwave but a cold front. During this year, she was on her toes. Expecting to see all her old high school friends, but the ones she was real nervous on seeing, seemed like they didn’t live here anymore. They were either busy touring or lived in different parts of the country. Which was good for El, because that means she didn’t have to explain her best friend to anyone.

She had taken the savings her father left her and opened up a small inn not too far from the water. It opened up in the summer and had been a hit since. Today, was no different. El found herself spreading thin between a bunch of jobs, and currently on the phone arguing with her mom on the scenery. “Kid! Come down, I need your opinion!” She yelled into the dining room where she knew Bowie had her face shoved in some book. Elise continued the bickering as she stepped up on the porch.

“Mom, to my left, there’s a giant gated house. Some rockstar does not live in it. Why would they choose here out of all places?” She bitched on the phone, thinking of it was someone famous, they were probably a sports player that she wouldn’t know anything about. As Bowie made her way into the porch, El hung up the phone.

“Kid, your grandmother is going insane again. She’s trying to tell me to raise the pricing on the rooms cause a rockstar lives there. But see, we’ve been here all summer and no one has ever left that house! So I think she’s on crack and needed an outside opinion.” The older redhead spoke at 100 miles a minute due to the overdose of caffeine.

The younger woman laughed, ready to back her mom when they saw the gate open and a man around Elise’s age popped out. He had bright green hair and looked like he was just trying to get the hell out of the house. When Bowie squinted her eyes, she started freaking out. “MOM OMG! GRANDMA WAS RIGHT!! THATS ALEX FROM ALL TIME LOW!!” She started yelling as if she was raise d with no manners at all. Elise cocked her head to the side, trying to think which band it was of her daughters before freezing solid.

Oh hell no. Of course her new place was right next to Gaskarths house.

It was Jack who ultimately convinced Alex to leave the house after being in hiding for what felt like a decade but was honestly probably only about a month or so. “Alex, stop being a fucking idiot. You can’t hide in that house forever. Come get coffee with me and Zack tomorrow? No, you know, never mind. That’s not a question. You’re meeting us at Starbucks. You can either show up of your own free will, or I can come over there and drag you to my car. Your choice, Gaskarth.” Alex knew that Jack wasn’t joking. So he pulled himself out of bed, took a shower, threw on the cleanest clothes he could find and did what he could to make himself not look like a total crackhead. After making sure he had his phone, wallet, and keys Alex headed out the door.

The sun immediately hit him in the eyes, causing him to curse under his bread and hold his hand up to his face. Remind me to find my sunglasses, Alex thought to himself. Even though he had lived in his new home for a little over a month, he was still less than half unpacked. A sigh left his lips and Alex began walking down the steps. He’d barely touched the sidewalk when he heard somebody that sounded like a child scream something about All Time Low. Looking in the direction that the noise came from, he saw two people sitting on the porch. One was a girl who couldn’t be older than twelve. She was jumping up and down and had a look on her face that Alex recognized as pure joy. And the other person, Alex guessed her to be the younger one’s mother, looked embarrassed.

He smiled gently and gave them both a wave. “Hey!” Alex greeted as he headed to his car. He made a mental note to sign something and bring it over when he got back from coffee. It would probably make that girl’s day.

His voice rang in her ears. It had been more rough than it was in high school yet it still reminded her of home. She watched his lanky arm wave towards them, and remembered the last time she saw him. She was pulling out of her mom’s driveway and he was running to try and keep up with the car. She had told all their other friends. She was moving up north, wanted to see what Stephen King was always writing about. Maybe give her some ideas of her own. But she never told Alex. Just like he never told her about seeing Lisa again, she found out by accident. She wasn’t going to stop because she knew she’d let him know everything and she wasn’t going to destroy their music career so that he could play daddy to an oopsie baby.

Before El came through, Bowie was already full blown running to the car trying to see him before he took off. Great. Not only is he going to realize everything, she’s going to look like a stalker. El ran behind the small girl, trying to reach her before she got to the car, but it was too late. By the time Bowie got to him, El had tripped over her own two feet - normal El - and she was pretty sure she sprained her ankle after busting her knee wide open on the concrete.

She was going to kill Bowie. She never grounded her before, but there was a first for everything. Maybe she’ll even have her mom do it, since she was so good at punishing El when she was Bowie’s age.

Bowie introduced herself to the singer before El limped over. She placed a hand on Bowie’s shoulder and kinda pushed her back. “Bow, leave the poor man alone. I’m sure he has important stuff to get back to. We don’t want to look like crazy people, especially if his wife is home looking at this whole mess.” She threw in, not having any idea where Lisa was, but that was the one thing she did keep up with was that he, at least, was married. She smiled quickly at the man, hoping he didn’t recognize her. “Thank you so much for tolerating my preteen. I’m sorry we bothered you. Let’s go home now, Bow.” And with that, she turned quickly, holding on to the thin girl for support, hoping he wouldn’t follow.

A lightbulb went off in Alex’s brain as the woman and her daughter approached the vehicle. Could it be? No…Elise moved up to Maine years and years ago. It couldn’t be her. It was someone who looked just like her. Yes. That was it. “Nah, you guys are fine. I don’t mind. She seems like a good kid.” The word wife pierced Alex’s heart like a bullet, and it reminded him of just how alone he really was. “That there’s my bachelor pad. Me and my dogs.” Alex spoke as he pointed back at his new house. He didn’t want to say the word divorce—the ink on the papers had long since dried, and the thought still made him want to throw up.

He had finally worked up the courage to ask the woman what her name was when she and the little girl turned around, walking away from his car. Alex knew that he had to go back when he had finished with Zack and Jack. He didn’t know what it was, but there was a feeling in the pit of his stomach that couldn’t be ignored. Alex turned the key in the ignition and pulled out of the driveway, putting the address for Starbucks in the GPS.

As he drove, Alex couldn’t get the redhead out of his mind. As certain as he was that it was Elise, there was also a little bit of doubt. He felt like Elise would have let him known that she was back. Never mind the fact that they hadn’t spoken since she moved. This would definitely be something to discuss over coffee with his friends.

The vocalist did his best to put the interaction out of his mind for the rest of the ten minute drive. He pulled into the parking lot beside Jack’s Challenger, cutting the engine and dropping the keys in his pocket. Alex locked his car and headed into the building, the smell of coffee calming him almost instantly.

Elise wanted to ask what happened to his happy ever after but decided not to since it seemed like he didn’t recognize her. Granted, she looked a lot different since she was now covered in tattoos, but it still bugged her since she knew it was him right away. She thought her former best friend would have some decency. But apparently she was wrong and just nodded as Bowie went on.

When they started to walk away she felt her eyes start to well up at the fact that her family had just met, even if none of them knew it. Bowie thought her father died in a car accident before she was born. Elise told her if this romantic life, some of the stories she actually had with Alex, just told through a different name. Bowie always held her “dead” father to high regards. And Elise always knew if she knew exactly who her father is, she would idolize him even more.

Even if that meant possibly hating her.

She shook that thought out of her head as she hobbled up the stairs. Bowie tried helping but Elise told her to work on homework as she walked towards the kitchen knowing her chef would help her. Corinne, the head chef, quickly became her person. Anything she needed, Corinne would help. As she wrapped her ankle, she spoke about what happened and before she knew it, she got an unexpected text message.

Did Gaskarth see you this morning or is he going insane? I need to know if I’m locking my best friend in a psych ward or not.

Her eyes scanned the message before seeing the name: less sexy Aladdin.

“I don’t know man. I know we haven’t heard anything from her in like thirteen years, but I still feel like Elise would let us know if she came back to town.” Zack spoke as he sipped his iced chai latte. Alex ran a hand through his already crazy hair and exhaled loudly. “I don’t know, Z. I’ll never forget the look on her face when she left. I wouldn’t blame her for not saying anything to any of us.” The vocalist looked over at their other friend, Jack, who was still buried in his phone.

“Dude, you’ve been texting someone for the last ten minutes. What the hell is going on?” Alex asked as he sipped his own drink. Jack looked up from his phone as he snapped out of his thoughts. “It’s my mom, man.” He spoke, putting his phone face down on the little table. “I had to teach her for the eight time how to record something on the DVR. It’s starting to feel like my sole purpose in life is to provide tech support to elderly Arabic women.” Jack shrugged.

Alex shook his head and chuckled slightly. While that definitely did sound like something that Jack’s mom would do, there was a nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach that Jack wasn’t exactly telling the truth. Call him crazy.

Listen, Jack, if you tell anyone I swear to God I’ll skin you like a cat. she texted him back quickly. She knew he had a big mouth, but she also knew she couldn’t lie to him. Jack was always like her little brother. He was only a few days younger than her, something she always held against him, but he had always acted so bubbly. When they first moved to Baltimore, the Barakats were always close to her family. So it made sense they were the closest. And even if she left 13 years ago, she still talked to Jack on a regular basis. Hell, he even knew she had a kid. But he didn’t know who’s kid she actually was.

With her ankle all wrapped up, she had to go run a few errands in town. She was hoping to avoid them as much as possible, but she had a bunch of little things to get for the inn. She also wanted to surprise one of her guest for the weekend, Sienna, because she was excited that she finally got to see her after the divorce and everything. With how contacted she was to everybody associated with ATL, she was surprised everyone could act like they hadn’t spoken to her in 13 years.

She called out to the manager on duty, and looked around for Bowie, but she was probably out exploring before her first day of her new school the next day. Up until now, Bowie had been taking online classes, but her mother refused to hear such nonsense and put her into the prep academy Elise was sent to her freshman year before getting kicked out and having to go to the high school. El wobbled her way around town, toting a few bags along with her before receiving another text from Jack. Hey, Gaskarth left, come meet the rest of us.

Elise was hesitant but really, really wanted to see her old friends. She sighed before sending him a text message. You suck. before popping over to the closest Starbucks, that luckily had Jacks Charger parked out front. She ordered her PSL and searched for the lanky man, seeing them in the corner. She went to go hug him before she realized there was one more body, and her hug quickly dropped. “You fucking lied, Barakat.” She whispered harshly in his ear.

Alex had just returned from the bathroom and sat down when he saw Jack hugging the redhead from earlier. When they made eye contact, Alex’s stomach dropped. And instantly, he knew. It was Elise. Due to the harsh glare and pinch on the elbow that Jack received, Alex guessed that he probably wasn’t supposed to know that she was back in town. Wordlessly, he sat down next to Zack who suddenly became very interested in his phone. “Hey…” Alex mumbled, unsure of what to say next. Honestly, what could he? His brain was becoming a virtual hurricane of emotions that he’d long since thought were dormant. The hurt he was feeling staring across the table at Elise was just as vibrant as it was the day he watched her drive off to god knows where. It hurt even worse than when Lisa slid the divorce papers, along with her wedding ring, across the kitchen table. His anger at Zack and Jack was also growing by the second.

They should have told him that Elise was back. The second they knew. Alex didn’t give a fuck what she had told him. The guys knew how much Alex had been hurting. Every single day. For thirteen years. And they still pretty much gave him the middle finger. “Excuse me… I… I just need to go.” Alex spoke, getting up from the table. He tossed his cup into the garbage and immediately headed outside, a panic attack beginning to creep up on him. The vocalist climbed inside his car and immediately locked the door, putting his head in his hands.

There was no way he could drive when he was freaking out like this.

Elise watched his emotions as he picked up and went to his car. How could he be this upset? He was the reason she moved in the first place. He was the reason she had no hope in Baltimore. He chose her. And he continued to choose her when he married her. She watched him grow on Instagram and other social media and he seemed perfect. Like he didn’t think about his childhood crush. When she spent most days thinking about him, especially anytime she looked at his child, the emotions would just keep going to the front of her head.

“You should go see him. He’s had a rough time.” Jack said, flashing an all-knowing smile, knowing what he had done. The tiny redhead flashed him the middle finger, letting him know exactly how she felt about him in that minute. His face faked a hurt expression as she grabbed her cold brew and headed out the door.

She searched the parking lot for the car she watched him get into this morning. After a few minutes, she finally found it and walked towards it. She saw him sitting in the drivers seat with his head in his hands. She felt sorry for him for a second, forgetting their history and knowing how shitty she’d feel if the tables were turned. She knocked on his window lightly, offering him a small smile and a wave. “Listen, they didn’t know until you told Jack you thought you saw me. I wasn’t going to tell anyone I was back because I wasn’t planning on being back.” She started, placing her drink on the roof of his car and rubbing her arm, obviously uncomfortable. “I’m sorry, if it means anything. I didn’t want you to find out like this and I should have said something this morning.” She said , trying to avoid eye contact.

Alex took a few deep breaths and tried to calm himself down before he could even look at Elise. "You don't have anything to apologize for... you never have." He spoke softly, running a hand through his now disheveled hair. Alex swallowed the lump in his throat and made eye contact with Elise for the first time since he found out her identity. "Hey... I honestly think we need to talk. I have a lot of things that I need to say. Shit that I've been holding in for almost a decade. I just wanna get that all out and if you wanna keep hating me, then you can. But now that I know you're back in town, I wanna get this stuff off my chest.... have some running around I need to do and I have to let the dogs out, but maybe around six I can pop over?"

Alex was surprised that he'd taken action like that. But he knew if he didn't, he would never be able to talk to Elise and he would have to swallow his feelings for god knows how long. Mercifully, though, Elise agreed and Alex smiled his signature grin . "Thanks... that means a lot. I'll see you then."

Now that Alex felt calm enough to drive he turned his car on and pulled out of the spot, heading back to his home.

“I’ve never hated you, Alex.” She whispered as she heard his words. If he had so much to say, why didn’t he say anything all those years ago? There was always a way for him to contact her. He could have found her on socials, he could have sent a message to her parents. But there was nothing. Over a decade of silence and he just thinks he can just demand time and she’d be totally okay with it? Of course she would be okay with it — she hadn’t gotten over him. She still felt the weird feelings she got when she first discovered that she had feelings for her best friend. How in Gods name did he even still have this sort of effect on her. “Six it is, and don’t worry about Bowie — I’ll make sure she’s occupied and we can have the conference room in the inn. Make our reunion more official.” She tried to awkwardly joke as she watched the grin on his face. She could have easily fallen to her knees right there and then but she held herself together. “What are friends for, right?” She smirked before walking back to her car after watching him drive off.

She was on her way home trying to piece together everything from the day. Why of all days was today the day that she had to run into Alex? She had always pictured it in her mind she’d see him again when she was 10 pounds lighter, had a full face on, looking hot as hell like “haha buddy look what you missed.” But that’s not how life worked. She was just thankful it was a work day and she wasn’t in sweatpants with a messy bun. But it definitely wasn’t a highlight that their own daughter ran up to him - not because they looked alike, which she was almost shocked they didn’t instantly pick up on, but because he was a freaking rockstar. And it wasn’t until she was a mile away from the inn the panic sat in.

How in the hell was she going to tell Bowie about Alex?!

All logic flew out the door when she ended up at her moms house looking for advice. She explained the situation, her mother knowing Bowie’s father all along and daughter her tooth and nail from hiding it from her. ”Well, you need to tell them both. They deserve to know, and don’t be your usual stubborn self. I have faith that Alex will step up, and that you guys are going to be thick as thieves once everything is settled.” Her mother said as she pushed the younger woman out of the house when she realized it was close to 6. ”And don’t worry about Bow, I already have a car picking her up for dinner.” her mother yelled as Elise got into the car and sped off, hoping to make it to the inn before Alex got there.

Alex pretty much sat down on his couch and stared at the wall for a good hour, trying to figure out exactly how he wanted to word what was going through his mind. Asking the guys for advice was a no-go. Rian had his own problems, and Alex would much rather fling himself off of a bridge than ask Jack or Zack for advice. He loved his friends dearly, but right now he wasn't able to trust them as far as he could throw them. After putting his phone on Do Not Disturb, Alex headed upstairs to take a shower and prepare himself for what would probably be an emotional conversation. The vocalist scrubbed his skin until it was a bright red before hopping out of the shower and heading across the hall to his bedroom. Alex threw on a flannel and another pair of jeans before heading back across the hall to dry his hair. The weather was starting to turn colder, and the last thing Alex wanted was his hair to freeze and he potentially end up catching a cold.

He glanced at the clock on the wall once he unplugged the hairdryer and realized it was nearly six. Taking a deep breath, Alex headed back downstairs and slipped on his shoes. "I'll be back, guys! Baz is in charge!" He called to the dogs before heading back across the street, deciding to sit on the porch while he waited for Elise to arrive back at the Inn.

A few minutes later Alex looked up from his phone to see Elise pulling into the driveway. "Hey... long time no see." He joked, standing up and following her inside. "I like what you did with this place... It's nice." Alex observed, his heart pounding harder with each step as they headed to the conference room. Once inside, Alex sat in one of the office chairs and took a deep breath. "You look really good, Lise." Alex whispered.

Elise couldn’t pin point why she was so nervous. She knew that, at the end of the day, she was the reason why they weren’t talking because she didn’t want to confront her issues. When she saw him on the front porch of the Inn, her breath got stuck in the back of her throat. He looked like he did the day she left, but with different hair and somehow age had treated him like a fine wine, better with age. She almost regretted driving away in that instant. That’s a lie, she regretted it every time she looked at her daughter, but it was the first time looking at him that she felt it.

“Just a bit, right?” She smirked back at him, hugging him quickly before kissing his cheek as he walked him through the inn as quick as she could. “Thanks, when I went to Maine I worked in a few hotels and I wanted to open one at some point. Time was now, I guess.” She shrugged before walking by the front desk looking at man operating it. She knew her best friend was checking him out like he was impressed by who she was bringing to the inn. She shook her head suddenly and informed him to block off the conference room so no one else would try to go in it.

When they walked into the conference room, she took a seat next to him, sitting at the edge with her ankles crossed. Her elbows on the table as she looked over at him and winked. “I look like I did when I was in high school, just covered in tattoos.” She smiled and laughed, tucking a loose hair behind her ear. She watched him intently, trying to keep all her emotions at bay since all the emotions she felt when she was about Bowie’s age. “You’re looking good too, the years seem to have been good to you.” She smiled sweetly before looking at her hands.

Alex laughed gently. "You don't have to bullshit me, Elle. I look like a reformed crackhead." He spoke as he ran a hand through his unruly hair. He was really proud of Elise and everything that she managed to do to turn this place into a success. He bit his lip as he searched for what to say next. Each second ticking by was like a fresh punch to the gut. Eventually, Alex decided to just rip the bandaid off and go for it.

"I know you leaving was my fault. I hurt you, and I'll apologize until I'm blue in the face. I thought I was doing the right thing by Lisa, and I hurt my favorite person in the world because of it. I can't take that back." He sighed, taking off his beanie, trying to gauge Elise's reaction before plowing forward. "Every day for the past thirteen years, I've looked at myself in the mirror and realized what a fucking idiot I was for hurting the one good thing I had going in my life. When Lisa filed for divorce, I realized it was my karma for what I put you through. I kept pulling up your Instagram trying to get the balls to DM you but I couldn't figure out what to say without sounding like a huge ass."

It was now or never at this point. Alex swallowed the massive lump in his throat and started to speak again. "But Elise, never for one god damn second think that I stopped caring about you. That I stopped loving you. Because you're the first thing on my mind when I wake up and the last thing on my mind when I go to sleep. And I wish I could take everything that happened back. Because it wasn't worth it."

As he spoke, she felt her body naturally lighten up at his joke. He was looking in rough shape recently, she could tell he was on one of his schedules where it was no sleep, read way too much about space, drink, and repeat. It seemed like the joy he had was sucked out of him and she didn't know if he had been that way since she left or if it was his newly found divorce giving him the anxiety, but either way, she felt bad. She had been praying for their divorce since she saw the photos on instagram. Not that she wanted anything bad for him - quite the opposite - but she didn't want Lisa to get what Elise always wanted. Not that she hated Lisa - she just hated the timing of Lisa. "Listen, if you were the face of the local methadone clinic, i'd get sober." she joked back with him, punching his shoulder playfully with a wink.

She could tell he was stressed by the way he bit his lip and took off his beanie, she couldn't even register the words he was saying. She was amazed by the gorgeous man in front of her and she felt 18 all over again and they had just told each other how they felt. She didn't realize what he was saying until he brought up how he hurt her. She had spent her daughters entire lifetime waiting to hear these exact words, but yet, they were bittersweet. She knew he meant it but she never expected him to be this torn up about it. It didn't help that she had always pictured the words being on her wedding day to a Hemsworth brother and Alex was fatter and balder. But no, his dumbass had to be as handsome as ever.

She sat there dumbfounded on what to say to the man. On one hand she wanted to hug and kiss him and tell him she felt the same way, but the other didn't know who he's become. "Alex, what are you even saying right now..." she whispered, looking down and fighting back the tears. How could he have been this dumb to not message her and let her know. "Alex, leaving 13 years ago was a mistake, I didn't know how to fight for what I wanted. Bowie changed that in me. If I could take it back - I would. I've missed you every day since." she admitted, leaning across the table and grabbing his free hand, to comfort him. "But we're totally different people now, it's over a decade later, I think it's time we shut the door on the past and focus on how the hell are we going to catch up, yeah?" she let out a friendly smile to let him know all is forgiven.

Alex squeezed Elise's hand, grinning at their first contact in almost a decade and a half. He was relieved at her words-- Alex half expected her to punch him in the face, tell him to get the fuck out of her inn and never seem her again. And he would have deserved every single bit of it. But when Elise was willing to let bygones be bygones and start over, Alex knew that whatever higher power there was out there had cut him a lucky break. "You don't know how happy that makes me, Lise." Alex spoke, taking her hand and gently bringing it up to his lips. "So, catching up-- hello, my name's Alex, I like space, Harry Potter and hanging out with the dogs."

He patiently listened to every detail as Elise caught him up on what she had been doing for the last thirteen years, but there was one thing that was nagging at him. Elise kept mentioning Bowie. Her daughter. The little girl that had run up to his car earlier. When Alex and Elise were younger, when they spent entire nights sitting awake talking in Alex's bedroom and dreaming about their future, they always talked about what they would name their children. And Bowie was a name that repeatedly came up.

Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in Alex's brain. "Lise.... I'm sorry for interrupting, but I gotta ask you a question before we go on. Bowie...your daughter... who's her father? How old is she?"
