Sassanra had thanked the maid and waved the woman away. She had rested long enough that she thought she would be able to feed herself. Plus she wanted time to think about her visit with Geralt. She looked out the window, lifting the spoon to her lips. Her nose scrunched as she ate. It was awfully tiring to be eating the same thing day in and day out but she didn't dare complain. It wouldn't be long before she could eat nothing at all. Her heart stuttered at the thought as she continued to eat.

She jumped slightly when there was a knock on her door. It was so rare that she got visitors, particularly the same person multiple times in one day. When she realized that it was Geralt at the door, Sassanra was quick to set her spoon back down in her bowl. She gave him as warm of a smile as she could, inching backward so that she could sit up a bit more straight.

"Geralt," Sassanra greeted him softly. "I didn't think I would be seeing you again so soon," she attempted to joke with him. She raised an eyebrow, tilting her head to the side. "Is there something else that I could answer for you?" She asked, figuring that that had to be the only thing that would have brought Geralt back up to her room so soon.

"Or did you come to hear me sing songs of the great White Wolf?" Sassanra tested, unable to stop the twitch of her lips. It seemed natural to her, to flirt with him. She would not be here much longer and Geralt, he was an ostracized man. It was harmless, right?

"I noticed the maid bringing your dinner." He stepped into the room, shutting the door tightly behind him. He didn't know whether to take the bowl from her straight away and see if he could smell anything, or if he should just wait it out to see if she gets worse quickly. He decided it would be better to not examine the soup directly in front of her, he didn't want to startle her. "You weren't lying, it is soup."

He did his best to joke with her, feeling like he had already put his foot in his mouth by mentioning her food in the first place. Grabbing a chair from the table, Geralt pulled it over to the princess's bed and took a seat. "Do you usually feel better when you eat... Or worse?" The witcher's expression grew more serious. He leaned forward and clasped his hands together, his eyes drifting down to the bowl in her hands. It appeared she had just started eating.

All he needed was to get a whiff of the soup and he would be able to tell just what was in it. He would be able to tell if she was being poisoned. It put him on edge to think he might have to wait for her to finish and then offer to take it away for her. He didn't want to sit her and watch her eat something he thought potentially could be lethal, but at the same time, he wanted to keep it a secret until he could be sure of who was to blame. He didn't want to scare her.

Sassanra raised an eyebrow when Geralt mentioned why he had returned. Because the maid had brought her dinner? She thought it was odd but she didn't say anything right away. She grinned, nodding quickly. "Soup is easiest for me to eat on my own. I am not always able to eat on my own, but when I can I try to. I send the maid away so that I may have some sort of dignity. It's hard to maintain when you are as ill as I am."

"I usually feel better for a bit because I am full but then I get more tired. Worse. I usually rest after eating," Sassanra explained as she took another bite of her soup. It seemed to her that Geralt was interested in her soup but it was easy for her to write it off. Geralt lived his life on the road, did he get a good meal often? Probably not.

Sassanra scooped another spoonful of the liquid and cupped her free hand beneath it before she started to hold the offering out to Geralt. "Here. You can taste it. I tire of it because it is what I eat most days but I'm sure I can share a bit of it. I wasn't very hungry to begin with but I think father is probably concerned since I had more activity today than I usually do."

Geralt's eyes strained as he stared at the spoon she held out to him. God damnit... He wasn't sure how potent the poison could be, but this was a perfect opportunity. He leaned closer towards the girls bed, feeling awkward and slightly degraded as he sipped from the spoon. The Witcher concentrated more on the scent of the soup, rather than the taste.

It was immediate that Geralt sensed the presence of poison hemlock in the soup. It was very, very miniscule, but it was there. He jerked back in his seat, wrinkling his nose up in frustration. "Give me that bowl, now." Geralt grunted, reaching his hand out and grabbing the dish with his hand. "It's not a curse." Jerking the bowl from her hands, Geralt looked down into the liquid could see the faint reflection of his glowing orange eyes.

"Youre being poisoned, Sassanra." Geralt didn't see the point in sugar coating the situation anymore. If the princess was going to recover, she had to stop ingesting the hemlock, immediately. His mind began to race with questions, like how often a day or a week she was fed the poison. Geralt was shocked she hadn't died already.

Sassanra tensed, visibly when Geralt all but jumped back away from her. She frowned as she pulled her arms back, just about to set the spoon down in the soup when Geralt demanded the bowl. She shifted, her confusion only grew when he declared that it wasn't a curse. How did he know? She opened her lips, to speak, to ask when Geralt broke the silence.

Her lips parted as shock washed over her. Sassanra's mouth opened and closed several times over as she tried to sort through what she had just been told. Pushing the small table off of her lap, Sassanra sat up straight. "A-Are you.. sure? How sure?" She asked. Her eyes flicked all over his as the gravity of the situation seemed to hit her.

"C-Can we... how... but I.." Sassanra whimpered as she seemed to deflate. How had this been going on for nearly a year and no one figured it out? Was there a reason for it? "How did they not figure it out?" She asked. Her hands had started to shake as she tried to maintain her composure. She looked up to Geralt as tears welled in her eyes. "W-What if... what if they try for my parents next?"

"Geralt.. I.." Sassanra trailed off as her shoulders dropped. She was struggling both to comprehend what he had figured out and the ramifications of what it meant.

Geralt cursed under his breath, wondering to himself how he always seemed to get tangled up in troublesome situations. He pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance as he placed the room. The mention of her parents only served to cause Geralt's skin to crawl, because he was almost positive her father was to blame. He sighed and rubbed his hands over his face, trying to compos let himself for Sassanra. After all, whatever he was going through internally couldn't compare to what she was feeling.

The witcher couldn't help fear for his own safety, couldn't help wonder how he would plan to bring this news to light. Surely he wouldn't instantly be tried for treason. Geralt wanted to tell himself that this wasn't his job, he had no business here, but the witcher knew full well that he slayer monsters all of varieties. Even the human kinds, sometime.

"Do not panic, Sassanra." Geralt returned to her bedside, not knowing how to comfort the small princess. "Things can only get better from here. Now that we know the cause, we can take it out of the equation. I can speak to the healer and we can begin to help you recover."

Sassanra shrank back as Geralt started to pace around her room. She watched him, tears continuing to well in her eyes. She would sniffle and reach up to wipe the tears that threatened to fall. She wasn't going to start crying in front of Geralt, that wouldn't be fair to him but it made her heart clench as she thought that she had been poisoned. She didn't even think about the concept that it could have been someone close to her as the root cause.

"Do you.. have any ideas of.. who it could.. be? Or why?" Sassanra'a voice broke. She turned away from him, reminding herself that she needed to remain calm. That breaking down in front of Geralt wasn't fair to him. Squeezing her eyes shut, Sassanra dragged in a deep breathe before returning her attention back to Geralt. She gave him a weak smile as his comfort.

"You have only been here for a few short hours and you've already figured out what was going on. I owe you my life," Sassanra murmured softly. She pushed the blankets off of her body, grimacing as she pushed herself toward the edge of the bed. "C-Can you.." she trailed off, realizing perhaps her question was a bit much. "Can you send for my maid? I would like to try to make it downstairs. Maybe have something fresh from the kitchen. With less poison," she added with a dry laugh, trying to lighten the mood of hte room.

Geralt was quick to move to the princess's side, fearful of how weak she might be so soon after ingesting the poison. "Are you sure you feel alright to walk that fair? Down the stairs?" The witcher wasn't anything to her, so he didn't feel comfortable telling her what she could and couldn't do, even though this didn't seem to be the best idea.

He ignored her previous question deciding that it was best if he kept his suspects a secret for the time being. He didn't want to cause her any false alarms or cause tension between her and her father, especially if he turned out to be innocent. Geralt thought that to be incredibly unlikely, but he supposed he had been wrong before.

Taking the princess's arm, he held her up against his side, letting her use his whole body as support. "No need to call a maid. I can help you down to the kitchens." He needed to see who was at fault for cooking her meals, anyway. Was whoever it was just turning a blind eye to whoever was poisoning the soup, were they careless or were they in on it also? Geralt didn't expect to like the answer. Helping the princess to her bedroom door, he helped her wrap her arm around his waist, showing her it was okay for her to do so. It also helped him keep her up on her feet.

Opening the door, he made sure to hold her hand tightly as they took the steps one by one. Geralt's nerves were on end, frightful that the princess might just drop at any moment. It wasn't a good idea for her to be using up the little bit of energy she had to be walking to the kitchen, but if she wanted that freedom, he would help her.

Truth be told, Sassanra didn’t know if she felt well enough to go all the way downstairs but it seemed now that she knew what was wrong with her, she couldn’t be stopped. It angered her that she had lost an entire year of her life because someone had chosen to poison her. And why? She had no way of knowing but she didn’t think sitting up in the room alone was a good idea. It would only let her thoughts grow worse.

Sassanra gulped when Geralt directed her to wrap an arm around his waist. She shivered, pressing closer to him before they moved toward the stairs. Once they reached the top, Sassanra froze as she looked down them. Could she make it all the way down then and to the kitchen? She wasn’t so sure but Geralt’s presence gave her more confidence. He was strong, surely he would continue to help her as he was doing now.

Swaying slightly on her feet when they managed to get to the bottom, Sassanra looked up to Geralt. She gave a small, triumphant grin. “We made it,” she declared, as if he wouldn’t have been able to figure that out for himself. She was sure to give every maid that they passed a bright smile, thanking them whenever they wished her well.

Sassanra paused as they neared the kitchen. She looked up to the Witcher, her voice dropping several octaves as she spoke. “S-Should you... test something before I eat? I’d like a pear.. or an orange if there are none. I haven’t had fresh fruit in so long,” Sassanra commented, unable to stop the pout before it had settled on her face.

Geralt never loosened his grip on the princess, even when they had made it down the stairs. He wasn't so sure that her energy levels wouldn't completely take a nose-dive any second and the last thing he wanted was her to hit the cold, stone floor. Sassanra did her best to smile brightly at each passing person and for a second, Geralt wondered if it was completely out of kindness, or if she wanted to appear as if she wasn't so sickly.

"I'm sure the fruit will be fine." He didn't say this out of annoyance or not wanting to make sure it was safe first, but Geralt knew whoever was behind this was poisoning only meals made specifically for her. Geralt used his free hand to push open the doors to the kitchen, leading Sassanra in by his side. There was only one chef left in the kitchen after preparing dinner and she was hard away at cleaning the counter tops. It was apparent she hadn't expected the guest to be the princess, because she didn't even bother taking a second to glance up.

Grunting loud enough for the cook to hear, the woman looked up and instantly went pale, dropping the rag she had been scrubbing away with. "Princess, forgive me!" She quickly straightened up and bowed. Geralt couldn't stop himself from rolling his eyes as he looked away from the woman, eyes scanning over the large kitchen until he spotted a fruit bowl off in the corner.

"A pear?" Geralt asked Sassanra, ignoring the chef as he guided Sassanra to a stool and helped her sit. He wondered if that woman could be an accomplice, if she knew anything about the poison going into the princess's food. He made sure Sassanra was comfortable and stable before he straightened up, dropping his hands from her shoulders and moving across the kitchen to find the girl the fruit she had asked for. He grabbed a pear from the bowl, bringing it to his nose to sniff. Just as he expected, just a pear. Geralt brought the pear to the chef, handing it to her before instructing her to cut it up for Sassanra. "Bring her some water, too."

Sassanra couldn't describe why she felt so safe with Geralt's arm wrapped around her but she did. She bit down on the inside of her lip as she stood in front of the kitchen door. She was tired, she already wanted to return to her room but in her mind, she felt as if she needed to be down here. She needed to show that she was strong, that she would get through this. Geralt had figured out what was going on - she would get through this.

Her thoughts were racing a mile a minute, she hardly noticed the chef who was busy cleaning until she spoke to Sassanra. Quickly, the princess waved off the bow because little signs of respect like that had never mattered to Sassanra. She gave a gentle smile before speaking. "It's okay, Adda. I just wanted a piece of fruit, I didn't want to have more soup. Geralt thinks something fresh may make me feel a bit better," she added. For some reason, Sassanra thought that Geralt didn't want to discuss what he'd discovered so she decided not to mention it quite yet.

"Please," Sassanra agreed when Geralt asked what she wanted. She eyed the fruit a bit warily, her shoulders pulled tight together. She only relaxed when Geralt sniffed the pear. When he passed it off to the chef, Sassanra was sure Geralt thought it was safe for her to consume.

With both the fruit and the glass of water in front of her, Sassanra couldn't help the way that she glowed. She grabbed for a piece of the pear and was quick to bite into it. Her eyes fluttered shut as she relished in the taste. Sassanra looked up to Geralt, a light blush covering her cheeks. "Pears are my favourite thing in the world. I can't remember the last time I got to eat one - they're not nearly as filling as the.. soup, and as easy to eat. Of course," she added, trying not to mention what Geralt had discovered.

It was only when the chef ventured to the far side of the kitchen that Sassanra spoke, her voice hardly a whisper - she didn't want anyone but Geralt to hear her. "Should we tell my parents what you've discovered?"

Geralt leaned against the table, his hands placed firmly down on the wood as he watched the chef chop the pear up into slices for the princess. He had watched the chef, Adda, tentatively when Sassanra spoke about wanting the fruit and how pears were her favorite, watching to see if he would notice any subtle, negative reaction. The witcher's eyes narrowed on her face, searching for any sign of guilt, but there were none. He scowled, cursing under his breath lowly, before he turned his attention back to the princess.

"No." His answer was quick and sharp, "we tell absolutely no one until we know who the culprit is." Geralt made sure to keep his voice stern and harsh, wanting to fully get across just how serious this was. She couldn't mention it to anyone, not a soul. If the wrong person overheard, or if people started to talk about it, Geralt would no doubt be thrown out of the kingdom for treason or conspiracy against the crown, or both, especially if his suspicious about her father were true. He thought about how he'd possibly be tried and sentenced to be executed and the white wolf didn't want to think about how he might try to get out of an execution.

The witcher watched the princess eat the sweet fruit, hoping something natural and healthy would help her feel better, even if just a little bit. Sassanra should be able to recover without any complications, so long as she wasn't introduced to any more poisons. Geralt could already feel the headache coming on of having to keep an eye on her every moment, fearing if the rogue found out she was skipping out on his meals, they might attempt a more personal dose of the poison.

"How are you feeling?" Geralt asked her, leaning against the table on his side, so he could look down at the girl. "I need you to promise me that you won't eat anything until I inspect it first, I don't care who gives it to you." He kept his eyes trained on hers, hoping she would listen to what he was saying. He didn't even care if it was one of the sweets she spoke about her mother gifting to her sometimes or if the chef behind him brought it to her personally, nothing before he inspects it.

With the sincerity that Geralt spoke with, Sassanra couldn’t shake what he’d said. They would not tell anyone at all, until Geralt had gotten to the bottom of the situation. Of who had tried to poison her and perhaps even more importantly, why they had done it in the first place. Sassanra nodded quickly, taking another bite of the fruit so that she didn’t have to speak and risk saying the wrong thing. She was used to being quiet - she was expected to be seen and not heard. Keeping something so serious a secret shouldn’t be too hard.

Sassanra looked up, her lips parting so that she could answer his initial question. Her breathe was taken away by the intensity of his gaze and the intensity that he spoke with. Sassanra swallowed thickly, her eyes locked on his as she gave a timid nod of her head.

Her brows knit together as she started thinking a bit too much about Geralt’s choice of words. Sassanra hesitated before she leaned closer to him. “But... surely my mother doesn’t know. The treats she brings me... I feel better after. I don’t get so tired. They would be okay. Right?” She whispered, her face scrunching as she eyed Geralt, trying to gauge his reaction.

Geralt frowned, leaning closer to the princess's face, his gaze narrowing, "Sassanra, I said, you don't eat anything unless I can check it first." He didn't intend to frighten the princess, or insinuate that he thought her mother was guilty, but he needed to make sure she understood just how serious he was. Geralt leaned back, relaxing his shoulders and the expression of his face before he continued speaking, "you don't know where your mother gets the sweets, we don't know if the person whose trying to harm you can get their hands on them before your mother gives them to you. I'm sorry, Sassanra, but this is just too dangerous of a situation right now."

With each passing second, Geralt wanted nothing more than to speak with this secret healer that showed up out of nowhere. How did the king know him? He was sure that was the mage concocting whatever poison it was they were administering to Sassanra. His gaze fell back down to the princess and gently reached out to rub her shoulder, trying to comfort her in some way. "Enjoy the fruit you have now and don't worry about anything else, okay?"

The witcher still was asking himself why he cared so much about this girl, why he cared so much about her feelings and whether or not he had hurt them. He didn't want to hurt Sassanra's feelings, he didn't want her to be afraid of him either, but he knew he had to act emotionless, appear as impenetrable as stone. Emotions would only get in the way of him doing his job and he had to keep reminding himself that a princess could never fall in love with a witcher.

Sassanra couldn’t help the way that her mind began racing as Geralt leaned forward and repeated himself. Did he think her mother was responsible? Or at the very least involved? Her stomach lurched at the thought and she dropped his gaze, her eyes finding her hands that were now clasped tightly in her lap. She couldn’t deny that she trusted Geralt; he had found her problem so quickly. She saw no reason not to trust him, particularly if his theory that she had been poisoned did pan out.

She only seemed to begin to calm down when Geralt explained what he was thinking. Sassanra’s body relaxed as she nodded, worrying at her bottom lip. She felt as if she didn’t have an appetite any more but she had managed to venture all the way down here. Sassanra wouldn’t waste her food, she would finish the pear before retiring back to her room.

Wanting to change the subject to something a little less depressing, Sassanra turned her attention back to Geralt with a shy smile. “Could you tell me about some of your adventures? I never did get to go out much, even when I wasn’t ill. Father was afraid for my safety,” Sassanra explained softly. “Who knows if he will ever let me leave the castle after we admit what you have found. These walls could truly be my prison,” she added with a small frown. It had been meant as a lighthearted joke but it came out darker than she’d intended.

The witcher looked down on the girl with a solemn expression, his eyes holding a sadness for the girl that his tongue couldn't speak. The more she spoke of her father the more it assured him who was orchestrating all of this, the more he was sure it was only to keep the throne from a Queen. Geralt was sure she didn't want to linger on the negative, instead wanting to be whisked away on a magical journey through one of his many stories. It was hard for him to bite back his tongue, to him, his travels weren't story worthy, they weren't magical or something to take pride in it. It was just his job,... but if they might life the princess's spirits, even for a moment, he would indulge her.

Pulling the seat out next to her, Geralt found himself relaxing into the chair and leaning an arm on the counter. "I fought a griffin once." The witcher was in no way a storyteller, but he would try his best to paint a vivid picture for the princess. "Farther north, past Redania, past it all, there is a little village named White Orchard. I was passing through one day, just going wherever the coin could be found and I came across a poor beggar slashed open in the middle of the dirt street, his horse and small carriage ripped to shreds..." His eyes flicked up to the princess, knowing the beginning of this story probably wasn't very palatable, but where else would he start? "It took me almost a week to track the beast and create all the potions I would need, let alone remembering how to use that damn crossbow." Geralt laughed at himself, showing the princess a little sliver of emotion.

He straightened up in the chair before placing his hands on his knees. "A wild beast with the body of a lion and the head of a great eagle, its wings were so powerful that one swipe from the creature could've demolished the town's inn." Geralt's face hardened when he thought about the scars he had on his side from where the beast's talons had been able to meet him. "That was a pretty nice payday." He smirked, before allowing his eyes to lift back up to meet the princess's.

Sassanra scooted a bit closer to Geralt, her eyes turning as round as saucers as he mentioned fighting a griffin. Her gaze flickered down to his broad chest for a moment and she had a thought that sent her heart racing in ways she didn’t think it ever had before. Did he have scars from the griffin? What did those scars look like, feel like? Sassanra cleared her throat and was quick to remind herself that she was supposed to be a lady. It was hard though because with Geralt, Sassanra felt far more comfortable than she ever had around the princes she had met. They were all so focused on their money and their power and Sassanra did not care for any of that at all. She would rather have freedom instead of being confined to the castle most of her life.

Even the grizzly start to Geralt’s story wasn’t enough to dissuade her. She did her best to imagine this ‘White Orchard’ that Geralt spoke of. Her face broke into a small smile at the sound of his laughter. It didn’t seem that Geralt would laugh often and she quite liked the sound of it - deep but a sense of warmth, despite Geralt’s cold exterior.

Sassanra’s lips twitched upward at the mention of coin. “Has my father promised a good sum to help with my.. afflictions?” She asked lowly, tilting her to the side. “If not, I can surely produce something worthy of saving a princess’ life from a rogue assassin,” she commented lowly because to her, that was the only possibility that there could be. There was no way it could be someone so close to her that wanted to rid the world of her.

Geralt felt a pitch in his throat when the princess spoke of payment. Even though it was true, he didn't want to make it seem to her, like he was only here helping her for a nice, heaping satchel of gold. That's what he had been promised and of course, what ultimately had made the decision for him. If Geralt could help it, he did his best to stay out of the affairs of Kings and Queens... And princesses. Her world wasn't his and it was better if he stayed clear of it.

"You don't need to worry about that." Geralt felt his jaw tense, clenching around the words as he spoke them. Geralt had no reason to find the amount of coin he had been promised suspicious, after all, it was a king he had struck a contract up with. Her father to be good for the pay, being a king and all. "I will be compensated for my time when you're healthy and back on your regular schedule."

The witcher hesitated before letting his gaze fall to his hands, they were large and calloused and small, lightened scars littered them from where he had been nicked and sliced during fights. He had to push the thought of leaving Sassanra away from his mind, though he wondered what might happen if he found out it was her father to blame... He couldn't take down a king, how would he leave her alone with that man?

Sassanra seemed satisfied with Geralt’s answer about his compensation. She couldn’t deny the thought of him leaving tugged at her heart strings. She would miss him but it was easy to write her feelings off. Geralt had come to the castle and figured out what was wrong with her in a few short hours. Something the healers of the kingdom hadn’t been able to figure out for themselves. She felt safe around Geralt because she knew that she didn’t have to worry about her safety with him nearby. He’d made it abundantly clear that her safety mattered and surely it was because of the coin he’d been promised and nothing else. Geralt was a Witcher, she was a princess. Their worlds were not meant to intertwine.

Her face lit up as an idea came to mind and she hurried to finish off the piece of pear that she had been working on. “Can you... once I am feeling better, show me how to fight?” Sassanra thought it was a good idea because at least if she ever got into trouble, she would have some semblance of a chance to defend herself. Her face fell only moments later because she was left remembering her place. She was a princess - they did not fight. They had people to do that for them. They were to sit, prim and proper, and give children to their husbands.

“That was silly of me. I’m sorry, I-I shouldn’t have asked...” Sassanra trailed off. She longed to hear more tales of Geralt’s adventures because she wanted some sort of freedom to herself. She wished she could accompany him beyond the castle doors but she knew better. Her father would never allow it. She was still not well and Geralt was a witcher. He’d have trouble wherever he went. A Witcher’s side was no place for a princess.

Sassanra forced a smile to her face as she finished off the last bit of her pear. “I should return to my room while I’m still able to.”

Geralt had been surprised by her request, but before she could try to push away from the table and stand on her own, he grabbed her arm gently and forced her to stay. "Do you know how to dance, Sassanra?" It may seem like an odd question, especially coming from such a muscular, brooding man, but it was pertinent. Dancing was something most princesses were taught to do, he imagined it came in handy all the time for their balls and parties.

"If you know how to dance you can learn to be a master swordsman. Easily. It's all in the footwork." Geralt found himself leaning closer to the princess, wanting to keep this little conversation private, even if the cook was the only person around to hear him. He didn't trust anyone inside these castle walls. "Remember what I told you about your food, get stronger and I may see if I have time to teach you some fighting techniques."

He let go of her arm only when he had leaned back in his seat and straightened up. "But you are right, it is time to return to your room." The man rose off of his chair, holding his hand out to the princess in offering as he helped her stand on her own feet. "Now that we know what has happened to your body, you need more rest than ever." Geralt held her small hand in his, feeling his rough fingers brush over her dainty ones as he led her out of the kitchen.
