Celeste hated how timid Henry had to be with her and she still didn't understand why he was so patient with her. Sometimes he seemed too nice and Celeste was waiting for him to snap at her or force himself on her, anything. She had never met a man so kind and gentle and she hated that she couldn't fully believe he was really that way.

Dropping his hand, but not before giving it a gentle squeeze, she disappeared into his bathroom, leaving the door cracked. She flipped the light on and began to peel her clothes off, doing her best to not glance up at herself in the mirror. She didn't want to see the bruises and cuts, the red and purple tender patches that decorated her legs or the cigarette burns that littered her arms. Celeste was quick to pull on a loose pair of sleeping pants and an long sleeved blue shirt, the sleeves long enough to fall over her hands.

Finally, she looked up in the mirror, her eyes scanning over the dark purple bruise under her left eye. Why was Henry putting up with her? She wasn't worth his time. Pushing herself away from the sink, she slowly crept back out into the bedroom, seeing him already curled up in the bed. She wasn't sure why she was so nervous, every time they got together felt like their very first time all over again. Crawling into the bed, she wiggled under the sheets and did her best to press against him, knowing it wasn't fair to treat him like her abuser just because she was scared.

THe morning rolled around and Henry wasn't the least bit surprised when he checked the time on his phone and realized that it was nearly eleven o'clock in the morning. Closer to lunch time than he ever slept but they hadn't gotten to the cabin into the early hours of the morning. He sighed and twisted, burying his face into Celeste's neck. He would happily lay here for hours on end if it meant that he got the luxury of just holding her to his chest.

"Mmm, morning, angel," Henry mumbled against her skin, letting out a content sigh. He groaned as he shifted, arching his back and stretching his arms above his head. Henry looked back down to her, shifting so that he could prop himself up with his hand.

"I'm going to head downstairs and get started on breakfast. You come on down when you're ready, okay?" Henry leaned over long enough to press a gentle kiss to Celeste's forehead before he pushed to his feet. Heading down the stairs, Henry started on a breakfast of omelets and hashbrowns, figuring that she would be down in a bit. Henry didn't mind, knowing that he had to show her what a good relationship could be like. After everything that Celeste suffered at Erin's hands, she desperately needed it. And she deserved it.

Celeste had already been awake, waiting for Henry to stir and once he did, she tried her best to pretend that she was just waking up. The way he pressed against her, resting his head against her neck had caused her to shiver, his breath tickling her. She reached out for him when he stood up, rolling over to his side of the bed, running her fingers over the sheets where he had been. "Okay," she breathed, unable to stop herself from smiling when he pressed a soft kiss to her head.

After he left the room, she pulled herself up and stretched, rubbing the back of her neck before making her way into the bathroom. She started a hot shower and then stood back to look in the mirror as she pulled her shirt over her head. She couldn't shake the feeling of being in a strange place, with a strange man, having to think about every action before she could make them. In a constant fear of doing something wrong. Celeste couldn't relax.

After her shower, she pulled on a pair of black leggings and a gray and black striped sweater, pulling her damp hair up into a bun on the top of her head. She hadn't taken very long and by the time she found her way to the kitchen, Henry was still frying up something. "Good morning," she smiled, waltzing into the kitchen and moving behind him, allowing herself to loosely wrap her arms around his waist, kissing the side of his neck.

Henry looked up from his spot in front of the stove. "Hey, angel," he praised her softly, his hand dropping to rest against Celeste's hand when she wrapped her arms around him. Henry was careful not to put too much weight on her because he knew he was so much bigger than her. A shiver ran down his spine when Celeste's lips pressed against his neck. If this had been any other day, with someone else, Henry was sure he would he turned in her arms and pushed her against the counter behind her. But this wasn't with someone else and Henry had self-imposed rules that he always followed with Celeste. Until she pushed them to a certain point, Henry would only ever litter her with love and affection without letting his hands roam too much.

"How'd you sleep, angel?" Henry asked softly. He twisted around enough so that he could wrap his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close enough so that he could press another kiss to her temple. "I'm making omelets. The hashbrowns are almost done and then the omelets will only take a few minutes," he murmured, nodding toward the prepared ingredients.

"Can you pour me a glass of orange juice and then whatever you want to drink?" Henry suggested gently. He was trying to be careful, he didn't want Celeste to think she would be in trouble if she didn't do what he asked her to do. Once he was all done cooking, Henry plated their food before carrying it on over to the dining room table.

Henry ate in silence for a few minutes, looking up to Celeste with a tiny smile. "So I was thinking that we can hike over to the river. I can catch some salmon that I can cook up for dinner. And I can show you how to fish, if you want. Hold a little competition?" Henry teased, reaching out for Celeste's free hand.

Celeste was quick to agree, slipping out of his arms after he kissed her. She opened the fridge and grabbed the orange juice, pouring two glasses and setting them down quietly on the kitchen table. The kitchen smelled delicious, and while she sat at the table, waiting for Henry to finish cooking, she sipped on her juice and watched him intently.

She found herself often comparing Henry to Erin, always thinking about everything he did differently. Erin had never once made her breakfast, instead, instilling in her the assumption that men weren't supposed to be in the kitchen. Watching him plate their food, she felt like she should be doing something, but she was too timid to move. Celeste was still terrified she would find a way to upset Henry and once she did, she'd see his true colors. That this gentle and loving side to him, was just that, a side. A facade he was putting up to reel her in and once she was comfortable...

Henry setting her plate down in front of her snapped her out of her thoughts. "That sounds fun," Celeste smiled, looking up at him with a twinkle in her eye as she took another bite of the hashbrowns. "I've never been fishing before... Well, I mean, I've been fishing with my dad once when I was younger, but I didn't actually fish." She laughed, "I'm sure you'll win."

Henry's face lit up at the prospect of getting to show Celeste something that he enjoyed. Fishing was mildly... boring, some people seemed to think but he loved having the time to reflect on what was going on in his life. Nature always managed to help him to decompress. He squeezed Celeste's hand, running his thumb over her knuckles. "You don't know that!" He laughed, shaking his head. "You ever hear of beginner's luck?"

Finishing off his meal, Henry leaned back in his seat. He smiled at Celeste, sipping at the remainder of his orange juice. "Besides, I'll give you a little edge with a bigger piece of bait," Henry offered, knowing full well that he would happily let Celeste win their little fishing competition. If it put a smile on her face, it would certainly be worth it to Henry. He wished that he could tell her just how in love with her he was but he didn't want to overwhelm her too much.

"Is there anything that you want to do while we're here? Or just enjoy being here?" Henry asked after a moment, wanting to give her the opportunity to do other things than just what he had suggested to her. "As long as you're happy, it doesn't really matter to me what we're doing, angel."

Celeste took the last bite of her omelette, washing it down with some orange juice before telling Henry it had been delicious. She loved watching his face light up at something so small, like fishing, but it was nice to see what he was passionate about. And when he called her angel, it was the sweetest sound she had ever heard.

She sat back and thought for a moment on what she'd like to do, trying to recall the few times her family had went camping when she was young. "Can we enjoy a campfire? Roast some marshmallows?" It sounded silly once she said it, and a blush appeared on her face, her smile disappearing. "That sounds stupid, we don't have to..." She couldn't look up at him, instead staring down at her hands as she peeled some skin off around her nails.

Expecting Henry to laugh at her, to agree it was a stupid suggestion, she kept her eyes down, fearful of being ridiculed. That was something Erin would do. He often made her feel so small when they spoke that it was happening here and now with Henry.

Henry couldn't have felt any happier than when he noticed the little blush that settled over her cheeks. But in the next moment, his happiness dwindled because her own smile fell and he was suddenly leaning forward, a frown only growing on her features. When she started to talk about how stupid her suggestion was, Henry deflated. The fact that she even felt like that was an option that could happen, it broke his heart.

Celeste was perfect to him. Sure, she wasn't actually perfect but she was about as close to perfect as he thought any one person could get. He started shaking his head, reaching out to grab Celeste's hand. He squeezed her hand gently, dropping his head down so that he could catch her gaze. When he finally managed to, Henry offered her a brilliant smile.

"Of course we can, angel. Smores is basically most of the reason anyone goes camping, isn't it?" Henry teased, trying to lighten the mood of the room. "I'll start a fire when we get back and cook the fish on that. Probably do some corn on the cob with some lime, maybe roast some potatoes or something. And after that, we can have some smores. How does that sound, angel?"

When Celeste heard the creaking of Henry's chair as he leaned forward, she flinched, stiffening as he grabbed her hand. She was anticipating a blow to her face, but when she looked up at him through her eyelashes, she relaxed. His smile forced her own smile to reappear on her face and she nodded. She hated constantly having to remind herself she wasn't with Erin. Biting down on the inside of her cheek, she nodded, "Sounds great."

Before she knew it, the two of them were getting their shoes on and heading out the door. It was a warm, beautiful day with a gentle breeze blowing through to help keep them cool. Henry had grabbed his tackle box and two poles and Celeste was quick to keep up with him. There was a constant doubt in the back of her mind that she was going to somehow ruin this trip, cause Henry to regret ever asking her to join him.

Sliding her arm around his waist, Celeste hooked her fingers through one of his belt loops, wanting to touch him. "This place is gorgeous..." She spoke up as they hiked through the forest towards the river or lake he wanted to fish at. The sun was making its way through the trees and she could feel the warmth of it on her face.

Henry was relieved when it seemed like he had helped Celeste calm down. He knew that she was still nervous and it was expected, especially when it had been so long since they had more than a few hours to spend together. He breathed a small sigh as he led the way onto the path they would take down to the river, unable to hide his little grin when Celeste's fingers wrapped around his belt loop. It was such a simple thing but it was enough to make him smile regardless.

"Almost as gorgeous as you," Henry teased at her comment. The only regret he had was that he couldn't reach over and wrap an arm around her but he would be doing a whole lot of that very soon. Or so he hoped. He exhaled slowly, glancing toward her. His smile only grew because it seemed like Celeste was enjoying something that he genuinely enjoyed and that was so important in a relationship.

"So," Henry hesitated, glancing toward her for a second time. "There's an opening for a detective up north that I was looking at. I thought that..." he paused, clearing his throat. This was a big leap and he knew it and he also knew that his decision on the matter would entirely rely on what Celeste wanted. "You could come with me. There's no pressure for anything. I mean, we could even have separate bedrooms and everything but.. but I think it would be a good opportunity. For the both of us."

Celeste looked up at him when he began to speak, feeling a weird mix of excitement and hopelessness at his question. She could tell how nervous he was just asking, hearing the fear of rejection in his voice after he cleared his throat. Her gaze faltered away from him for a moment, as she looked back to the path they were walking. "I could go with you?" She found herself asking the question as if she didn't believe him right after he told her she could.

There was a pit opening in her stomach, and the thought of running away with Henry sounded wonderful, but still... Would Erin let her leave? Would she be able to sneak away with Henry without telling him? Or would she have to have that conversation with him? She believed him when he mentioned it would be a good opportunity, any opportunity to escape her abuser was a good one.

"You should apply for it." She finally answered, her hand moving away from his belt loop, only to find his free hand. Intertwining her fingers with his, Celeste looked up at him hopefully, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. It was terrifying just thinking about leaving Erin, but she knew there was no clear way out. She had tried to leave him before and she had ended up in the hospital, but that time she had been alone. It hurt her to think she couldn't definitely tell Henry yes or no, but just maybe if he got it the opening, it would be a push for her to try and leave with him. Celeste loved Henry and she knew she'd never be able to let him go.

Henry nodded eagerly at Celeste's question, flashing her a nervous smile. He wasn't so sure that Celeste would agree to it and if she didn't want to go, he wouldn't force her. He, himself wouldn't go either. Celeste meant far too much to him. The idea of leaving her was enough to make him turn down just about any opportunity that came his way. He knew that it was a lot, considering Celeste was still technically in a relationship with someone else but he would support her in any way that he had to.

When Celeste told him to apply for the job, Henry's heart could have burst from job. His smile only grew as he nodded, lifting Celeste's hand so he could press a delicate kiss to her hand. "And.. if I get it, you'll go with me?" He asked gently, just wanting to make sure that they were both on the same page about that.

"We'll move and we don't even have to say anything about it.. to him. We can navigate it in whatever way you want. I just want you to be happy and comfortable with the whole thing. Whatever that takes, angel. I'll do it," Henry promised as they reached the river. He set down the tackle box, setting down the fishing poles long enough to lay out the blanket that he had brought along for them to set on.

Grabbing the poles, Henry started to show her how to put the bait on the hook before swinging the line out so that it settled far enough into the river that it would catch a decently sized fish.

Settling down on the blanket, Celeste remained silent as she watched him bait the hook. She knew she had to tell him the truth, how frightened she was to try and leave him again. She couldn't let him hang on a thread of hope that she might have to cut. "I want too," she started, biting down so hard on the inside of her cheek she was sure she tasted blood, "but thinking about leaving scares me." Her voice came out in a hushed whisper, almost afraid for Henry to hear her. "G-go for it," her voice stuttered, finding it hard to force out the words, "and if you get it, we will go from there."

She couldn't force herself to look up at him, instead, staring out at where the line had disappeared under the water. "I've only ever tried to leave him once..." She didn't know why she was still talking, but she was. "He damn nearly killed me when he found me." Hot tears were burning her eyes and she wanted to scold herself, wishing someone would slap her across the face, punish her for ruining such a lovely time. Why couldn't she just tell him yes and leave it there, deal with the repercussions later when she couldn't go? Memories flashed before her eyes, how her eyes had been so swollen she couldn't see, multiple ribs and bones broken, all she could hear were the beeping monitors and nurses around her in the hospital. She didn't want to find herself in a situation like that again.

Henry swallowed thickly at the emotion that Celeste showed. It broke his heart hearing what she had gone through and it renewed his need to protect her. He wasn't going to let anything happen to her, ever again. He would break someone before he let a single thing happen to Celeste again. He had no clue how he was going to keep her safe before they left but damned if he wasn't determined to commit to her safety. Jamming his pole into the ground so that it would stay put, Henry twisted around to face Celeste. This time he didn't bother to ask for permission as he pulled Celeste into his arms, holding her against his chest. He needed to feel her in his arms, to know that she was safe and that she could be as upset over the trauma as she needed to be.

"I swear that won't happen again, angel. I'll protect you. I'll keep you safe," Henry promised her, cupping her cheek and brushing his thumb over her cheek. "I swear. Nothing will happen to you. When we decide to move, I'll stay with you the whole time. I won't let Erin come around you. Because you deserve to be happy and safe. You deserve to be able to enjoy your life, angel. And I'll make sure that happens," he promised, giving her a gentle smile.

"Do you want to talk more about what happened?" Henry asked softly, tucking a strange of hair behind her ear. He looked down to her, willing to do just about anything that Celeste could possibly ask of him.

Celeste curled up in his arms, letting her head rest against his chest, the sound of his heartbeat soothing her enough to calm her down. Enough to where the tears wouldn't fall down her face, at least. It was hard for her to believe when he spoke about keeping her safe, because she knew he couldn't, no matter how hard he tried. At the end of their trip, she would have to go home, to an empty, loveless apartment and when Erin came knocking... Henry wouldn't be there.

However, she could find hope in his words when he spoke about it getting better one day, when he promised that he would make that happen. She believed him, she wanted to believe him. It seemed impossible that there would ever come a day when she would wake up without being frightful of what might happen to her, a day where she wouldn't have to worry about Erin finding her.

"I don't know if there's really much to say about it." Her voice cracked, and she squeezed her eyes shut tightly, trying her best to blink away the hot tears. Celeste tilted her head down, hiding it in his chest so he couldn't see she was doing her best not to sob. Her arm slithered around his waist, holding him tightly, wishing she could stay here forever, safe in his arms. "It was the only time I had enough courage to try and get away, but he found me days later and-" her voice was trembling, cracking even though she was doing her best to speak clearly, "I was in the hospital for a week, he had beaten me so badly I woke up and couldn't even remember my name." Celeste remembered that short term memory loss, almost fondly, because at least for a couple of days she couldn't remember the horror she had endured, or the monster who had been waiting for her at home.

Celeste describing the ordeal that had happened the last time that she had tried to leave Erin made Henry's skin crawl. It made a lot more sense as to why she was so afraid to leave him but Henry was determined to be the help that she desperately needed. Even if she never actually wanted to be in a committed relationship with him, Henry would accept that she was safe and happy. At the end of the day, that was all that Henry truly wanted. The thought was enough to make his heart ache but he'd do it.

Rocking them back and forth gently, Henry gently ran his fingers through her hair in an attempt to reassure Celeste that everything was going to be okay. He grinned slightly, kissing her cheek in an attempt to keep her calm. It was obvious how upset reliving the day made her. "That'll never happen this time. You have me with you, y'know? I'll protect you, always," Henry promised her in a low voice. He kissed her forehead again, relieved to have her so close to him.

"I'm a cop. S'kind of my job, isn't it?" HEnry was trying to ease her mood and hopefully pull a laugh out of her because he hated seeing Celeste as upset as she was at the moment.

Celeste relaxed against his chest, but no matter how many times he tried telling her that it would never happen again, that he would be there to protect her, she couldn't bring herself to fully believe him. Somehow, she knew deep down that Erin would always manage to find her. Pulling her sleeve over her hand, she brought it up to her face to wipe at her eyes, demanding herself to stop crying.

"Cop or not, you do make me feel safe." Celeste looked up at him, forcing herself to give him a small smile. This wasn't how this weekend was supposed to go, but it wasn't surprising to her that it had anyway. Whether they talked about it now, or later when he would see just how bruised and broken her body was, Erin would come up and Henry would want to talk about it.

She dreaded that moment, knowing at some point during this trip, Henry would see her body. She dreaded it for more than the obvious reason, because other than just wanting to hide the cuts and the burns and the bruises from him, she also wanted to share her body with him. To actually experience what real love felt like, with someone who didn't want to hurt her.

Turning her attention back to the river, she tried to regain her composure, wanting to allow Henry to enjoy himself. He had been so excited to go fishing and now here she was, ruining it for him. She wouldn't lay waste to his good time any further. The pair sat on the blanket, overlooking the river for what felt like hours and it was. Celeste was able to watch the sun slowly descend in the sky as Henry reeled in fish after fish, and by the time their fishing adventure was over, he had a bucket of about five or six hefty fish.

"Good. That's all that matters," Henry murmured. He smiled, cupping her cheek carefully, trying to show her all of the support that she deserved. Doing anything else just felt so wrong to him. He couldn't possibly do anything else. To him, Erin must have been out of her mind to be treating Celeste the way he did. In truth, he probably understood a bit more than he probably should have... but Henry could never even consider it. The thought of hurting her, of scaring Celeste made his stomach churn. "I'll always keep you safe," he cemented softly, wishing that he could just hold her in his arms for the rest of eternity.

Henry knew he was in far too deep, that he would never be with another woman. His heart would never belong to someone else. He damn well knew that. But he was holding back for as long as he could, not wanting to scare or overwhelm her until Celeste was ready for that. He was going to be the supportive, loving man that he had always been.

Once Henry was satisfied with how much fish he'd gotten, he pushed to his feet and gathered the blanket to toss over his shoulders. He grinned at Celeste, nodding toward the fishing poles for Celeste to carry. He had the tackle box in one hand and the bucket full of fish in his other hand. "How do you like your fish? I tend to make mine a bit spicy but I can adjust yours if you don't want it like that," Henry offered as they headed back to the cabin.

It was only when they reached the cabin that he slowed to a stop, glancing toward Celeste. "If you don't want to be around while I ready the fish," he paused, knowing many were squeamish about such a thing, "can you shuck the corn in the kitchen? There's a couple cobs in the fridge and some potatoes if you can rinse those off.."

"You can come out here if you want but if you don't, I'll be as quick as I can be, okay?"

"No spicy, please." Celeste laughed as she picked up the poles and followed Henry back to the cabin. She was still trying to control herself, still upset that she had broken down so easily in front of him. It hadn't crossed her mind what might actually happen this weekend. She had wanted to just have an easy, happy weekend but now she was being faced with the harsh reality that she would have to talk to Henry about Erin. She would have to show him her body at some point and watch how his face would show disgust and hurt.

Celeste held the poles tightly in her hands when they got back to the cabin and Henry mentioned the corn and potatoes in the kitchen. "Yes, of course," Celeste was more than eager to do anything he asked of her. She watched him set the bucket of fish down next to the fire pit, and for a moment, she thought about bringing the corn outside to be with him while she did it, but... She thought about watching Henry skin and gut the fish and felt her stomach flip. Not because she was squeamish and didn't want to watch the fish be butchered, but the thought of watching Henry work so meticulously with a knife... She couldn't. "I'll be right back," she told him, moving past him, but not before stepping up to place a kiss on his cheek.

Heading inside, she put the poles up and then moved into the dark kitchen, flicking on the lights. She grabbed the vegetables from the fridge and washed the potatoes off before leaning next to the wall by the garbage can. She shucked the corn slowly, falling into a weird sort of trance, losing herself to her thoughts. Her hands worked slowly, trembling more and more as she thought about what might happen later that night, upstairs in his bedroom. Celeste could already feel Henry's hands moving over her bruised skin, his finger tips caressing over the cuts and burns...

"Stop worrying so much," she berated herself, setting the corn down on the counter before covering her face with her hands. She found herself wishing she wasn't so pathetic very often. She wished that she could be stronger, strong enough to break away from Erin and actually be with Henry, in the way he wanted her to. Wiping away her tears, she grabbed the vegetables back up in her hands, before heading back outside.

Henry longed for the days when Celeste wasn't nervous around him. When she wouldn't kiss his cheek, buts he'd lean in to kiss him on his lips and maybe it would have even gotten a bit more heated... he bit back a sigh as he watched her retreat, eager to reach out and pull her against him. He held back, turning toward the bucket that he had beside him. Henry dropped down to the ground and got to work on gutting the fish, his efforts meticulous and fast because he'd been doing this since he was little. With his dad, growing up, fishing had always been an important part of their bonding together. He only hoped that it could have a healing effect for Celeste. It was calming, after all.

Passing by Celeste as she left the house, Henry gave her a quick smile. "I'll just be a minute. Grabbing some spices and tin toil, angel," he explained before disappearing entirely into the house. Henry returned a few moments later with various spices and a clean butter knife tucked under his arm while he carried the tin foil in his free hand. "So," Henry tested as he lowered himself by the firepit. He made quick work of starting the fire before he turned to Celeste, beginning to make little boats with the foil. "Can you make a couple of these? Then I'll season the fish and get it cooking for us," he explained, doing it fillet by fillet until they were all on the fire. The fish would still be good the next day, even if it wasn't completely fresh.

"I know it sounds a little weird but corn on the cob, on a fire, is excellent with some lime," Henry said with a small laugh. He nodded toward the lime that sat atop some of the bottles of spices. "But you don't have to have it like that if you don't want to," he added hurriedly. He was always so worried about pushing her or somehow convincing Celeste that she needed to do something for him, otherwise he would hurt her. He shook his head at the thought, tilting his head to the side after a moment.

"Whatever fish we don't eat tonight, we can have tomorrow. And we can have smores every night if you want. How's that sound, angel?" Henry asked, looking up to her. A smile grew on his features at that, hopeful that even such a simple offer would be enough to ease Celeste's pain even the tiniest bit.
