Waking up was a shock. Especially in a dim hospital room, hooked up to beeping machines. Not locked in a closet. Ames had been in the hospital for two days and had already spoken to countless nurses and police officers. It all just still seemed like a dream. It couldn't be her reality. She had lived in that broom closet for...six, seven years? She had grown up in that fucking broom closet.

Propping herself up with her elbows, she looked down at her legs under the sheets. Ames had been in a pretty bad car accident just a few years before she had been kidnapped that had left her in a wheelchair. It had been one of the things that made her an easy target.

"Oh, she's awake," Ames looked up towards the door when she heard a nurse. The door cracked open and the nurse appeared to be speaking to someone else, before she moved out of the way to let him in. It had been the police officer who had rescued her. Was his name Marshall? She had fallen asleep in the back of his cruiser, so she didn't remember much of anything if they had talked.

That whole night had been a blur. Most of her time spent awake she was usually drugged, and that night had been no exception. When Marshall busted her out of her prison, she had been seeing two of him and couldn't hear a thing he was saying. Thinking back on it, she was glad she had been drugged for most of her time with that maniac. It helped her forget a lot of the horrible things that had been done to her.

The nurse allowed Marshall into the room, before shutting the door behind him. "Do I have to answer more questions?" Ames whined, still feeling exhausted from all the talking she had done the day before.

Marshall had been completely disgusted with the sight that had met him when he pulled open the closet in that run down house. His stomach had turned and he had felt an immediate sense of nausea roll off of him. The sweet smell of maple was hardly detectable beneath the stench of fear and pain and ohgod. Marshall turned away and had to drag in several deep breathes to compose himself before he could tend to Ames. The task at hand was making sure she got to the hospital and that she was okay, he didn't consider much else at all. Certainly not the idea that the sight had excited him in a way that it never should have.

He had leaned down to scoop Ames into his arms before rushing her upstairs after he had called into his radio that an ambulance was needed stat. It had been easy enough for him to focus on the scene after she left, his thoughts running a mile a minute as he moved about, helping to process things and try to determine everything that had gone on here.

When Marshall got home, hours after they first broke down the man's door, he'd taken enough time to shower and shove a bowl of cereal down his throat before he left his house. He needed to check on Ames, make sure she was okay. With everything that was going on, he thought it was only right to check on her. He had likely been the first friendly face that she had seen in forever - he should be the one that checked on her. That's what he told himself anyway.

Offering Ames a small smile, he shook his head. The noise she let out sent blood rushing south but it wasn't something he could readily admit to.

"No, ma'am. I'm just here to check up on you," Marshall explained in a low voice. He took a step toward the chair beside her bed before he paused, nodding toward it. "Mind if I sit?" He was exhausted and he was sure that Ames would be able to figure that ut but as a detective, Marshall was used to working on little to no sleep.

Her body relaxed against the firm hospital bed when the detective assured her she had no more questions to answer. But then why was he here? Letting her head fall back against the pillow, letting out a strangled breath she had been holding, she glanced towards the chair and nodded. "Go ahead."

Ames lifted her eyes back to Marshall, watching as he dropped himself down into the chair. Dark bags hung under his eyes, making him look like he hadn't slept in days. Maybe he hadn't. "You look like a zombie. Why aren't you home, sleeping?" She asked, her voice quiet. She was too busy worrying about him that she didn't stop to think maybe he had wanted to check in on her.

Relaxing back against the pillows, Ames wrapped her arms around her torso. So many years in isolation, it was weird to think about speaking to someone other than herself or that monster. She wanted to run her mouth and never speak a word, all at the same time. "W-what's going to happen to me?" It was the most burning question on her mind. Ames had spoken to a welfare agent the night before, about if she remembered her mother's name, or father's, or where she had lived. She hadn't remembered any of it. If they couldn't find her family, where would she go?

Marshall couldn't help the laugh that bubbled past his lips when Ames pointed out that he looked like shit. Maybe she had said it a bit nicer than that but it was the truth. He knew it; his shower had done little more than help refresh him. He breathed a small sigh as he settled in his chair before he looked up to Ames. "I feel like one, too. But that's just one of the job perks," he teased, shrugging his shoulders. It wasn't the first time that he'd worked a case with little sleep. It certainly wouldn't be the last either. It didn't concern him in the slightest bit. "You know you're doing a job that helps people. Helps you get through the long hours." Marshall was going to keep talking if it helps Ames calm because it seemed as if it was.

"It may be a bit unconventional but.." Marshall trailed off, wondering if he should just keep to himself. Maybe it would have been the better option to not offer his home to Ames. He'd spoken to her, sure. He'd helped her out of the basement but that was the extent of their relationship. Marshall could only imagine how apprehensive she would be about going to a strange alpha's home.

"Until we come up with a better plan, you can come to my home. That way you don't have to stay in the hospital," Marshall explained gently. He was quick to continue speaking, "until we come up with another solution or you are ready to move on. There's no omega so you don't need to worry about overstepping or anything..." he trailed off, his smile gentle in an attempt to help ease her nerves.

Ames was surprised to say the least. Yes, the detective sitting in front of her had saved her, had pulled her from that basement and brought her out of that house for the first time in years, but...that was all it was. His job. Opening his home to her, that was a completely different story. That was something no one would ever ask of him, that he'd only offer out of straight kindness. Right? Still, she was apprehensive. He was an alpha, and Ames didn't need to hear the horror stories to know what alphas were capable of. She had been captured by one.

But surely, Marshall was different. He was in law enforcement, a detective. He had saved her. If he was hoping his home to her, it would be safe. And it sounded better than being stuck in this hospital for longer, or being moved from foster home to foster home. Ames didn't hang on to any hope that her parents were still waiting for her out there. It'd be easier to move on from that dream, she thought.

"That's..." Her voice cracked as she thought of what to say. "That's really nice of you but," she sucked on her bottom lip, her left hand going to lay on her right arm, picking at the fabric of the hospital gown. "You've done enough. I don't want to bother you, and I'd... Probably be a bother." Not to mention, she wouldn't make a very good omega either. It didn't sound like Marshall expected to receive anything back from her, but she would be taking more than she could give him.

"But?" Marshall echoed her word, raising an eyebrow. He was almost betting on what he knew was about to come. She had suffered for a long time at the hand of an alpha. To go out on a limb and trust a strange alpha? He had seen it time and time again with omegas who had been assaulted once, ones who had been abused over an extended period of time, and any situation in between. He shook his head, holding up his hand to silence her before she could continue on about how she would be too much of a problem. Accepting help would be a precarious position that Ames found herself in.

"I am the one that offered my home to you. No one asked me to house you," Marshall explained softly, shrugging plainly. "If I wasn't willing for you to accept the offer, I wouldn't have made it in the first place. So.. it's on the table. You don't have to say yes or no now. I can visit again tomorrow.. or the next day. If you want a bit more time to debate what you want to do. Would that sound better to you?" He asked as he raised an eyebrow.

"And if you do decide to come with me, you can always decide to leave at any time. Regardless of the reason," Marshal added. His smile remained in place because he wanted Ames to feel as comfortable as she possibly could.

Ames wasn't entirely sure if it was job that intimidated her or the fact he was an alpha. Or both. When he repeated her, raised his hand to silence her, she involuntarily flinched. Going completely silent as her gaze fell to the bed. It was hard to believe she didn't need to fear him. Alphas were so large. Marshall's hands looked large enough to crush her bones into dust.

"I'll think about it, thank you for the offer," she whispered, her dark hair falling down in front of her face. She imagined she would end up accepting his offer. Living underneath of him seemed better then her other options. She just hoped the Marshall she knew wasn't just a front for a much more monstrous alpha underneath. Ames had been abused for so long, no part of her wanted anything to do with an alpha. Even now, her inner omega was panicking, crying for her to get away from him. Like a beaten puppy. Her heart was racing, terrified that at any minute something bad would happen.

It didn't help that the heart rate monitor was beeping like crazy, alerting Marshall to her panic. A nurse came hurrying into the room, looking around to see what could be causing her spiked heart rate. "Maybe, Ames needs more rest?" The nurse looked towards Marshall, before hurrying to the girls side to check on her.
It was official. Ames had spent the better part of most of the night, staring at her ceiling and contemplating Marshall's offer. And now, here she was, waiting in her wheelchair outside of his apartment door while he unlocked it. She had no belongings, no clothing. Only the shirt and leggings she wore that the hospital had found for her and the wheelchair they supplied her with. The door flew open and Marshall stepped out of the way, allowing Ames to let herself in.

"Thank..you again." Ames whispered once they were inside. His apartment was dark, only filled with a couple of pieces of furniture. Beer bottles littered the place. It was obvious a single man lived here. She wheeled herself over to his couch, pushing herself out of her chair and onto the softer cushions.

Marshall didn't so much as bat an eye when Ames' heartrate monitor began beeping like crazy. It was basically an expectation at this point, not the least bit surprising to him. He nodded at her thanks, wishing that he could offer her a bit more comfort than he had. It was clear that Ames had suffered for so long and so horribly that she deserved to be happy and safe... comfortable, even. The thought of her going to some long term home where she was just another number... it made his stomach churn at the thought.

"Of course, Miss Ames," Marshall teased as he pushed to his feet. He gave a slight bow before turning and leaving the room so that Ames could rest as much as possible.
Stepping into his apartment, Marshall grimaced after he turned the light on. He looked around, seeing the mess that he had left. It was too much effort for him to clean up after himself all the time, with the late hours that he worked. The long hours that stretched from all hours of the night. There were countless times when he woke up in the middle of the night to being called out, the middle of cleaning, or just as he was getting to sleep. Cleaning up after himself was the least of his worries... until now.

"Sorry. I'll start getting this place looking at least liveable," Marshall commented as he picked up several of the bottles by their necks before carrying them toward the kitchen. Luckily, his place was an open concept. Ames would be able to enjoy herself, hopefully."What'd you want for dinner? Pizza? Chinese? Burgers?" He asked, glancing her way as he came back with a shopping bag to start stuffing the garbage into as Ames settled on the couch

Ames scooted back on the couch as she watched Marshall zip around the living room, grabbing the multiple beer cans and take out garbage as he went. It wasn't a surprise to her, and his apartment still wasn't nearly as disgusting as the conditions she was used to. "Dont... worry.. about it.." Ames laughed, watching him speed clean. She was even more surprised when he offered to let her pick what was for dinner.

Pizza... She hadn't had pizza since she was a kid. "Pizza...?" Ames swallowed as she turned on the couch, placing a hand onto the back of it as she watched Marshall hurry back to the kitchen to dispose of the filled bag of garbage. As dim and mancavey as his apartment was, it was still comfortable. Ames could feel herself sinking into the couch by the second. Looking around the floor, she could see where it needed to be swept, the entertainment center that needed dusting and organizing, the rug that needed vacuumed. She'd bet the whole apartment needed some attention.

Marshall needed help. But she was too frozen from her nerves in that moment to try and do anything. "Can.. I take a shower?" Ames quietly asked when she forced herself to look back up at Marshall. Sure, she had taken one or two in the hospital, but a hospital shower wasn't a real shower... Or even a bath. Ames wanted to relax and just scrub the jitters off of her skin.

Marshall did his best to keep up with the work that needed to be done but there were days that the time just escaped him. Which had been the case since he had rescued Ames from that closet. He'd slept for a few hours the night before, after leaving Ames' hotel room but even that had been short-lived because he had been interrupted by his phone ringing. He was needed back at the station. Just like that, Marshall was a zombie in his kitchen trying to make a pot of coffee before he headed into work.

Picking up the pizza menu from the front of the fridge, Marshall handed it off to Ames. "Pick whatever you want. Hell, if you want to have leftovers since I probably won't be back until late tomorrow... get a big pizza. Just for you," Marshall offered, not wanting to leave Ames alone without an easy enough meal for her to put together. He wasn't sure what the boundaries were with her disability but he didn't want to baby her... but he also didn't want to leave her with no way to fend for herself.

Marshall hesitated at the question, his eyes narrowing slightly before he managed to wipe the look from his face. He wasn't upset about her wanting to take a shower but he didn't have a bench for her to sit on.

Clearing his throat, Marshall sat at the far end of the couch. "You can, if you want to. I don't have a bench for you. I'll have to get one for you... but that'll have to wait until I have the time," he paused, tilting his head to the side. "Or you can take a bath. That might be easier," he offered with a half hearted shrug. Marshall's head tilted as he glanced toward her. "Or I can help you. But.. that's only if that's something you're comfortable with. If you're not, that's okay, too. Whatever you want."

Ames took the menu from him, looking over the different options. Her fingers brushing over the print, wondering to herself if this was all real. Was this just some weird dream her mind had conjured up to allow her some relief in that closet? Squirming over to the side of the couch, Ames picked up Marshall's cellphone and punched in the number for the pizza place. When the employee on the other side answered, Ames found herself struggling to find her tongue for a moment. Eventually, she ordered a large pepperoni pizza, deciding it was the safest option. She wasn't entirely sure what she would like or dislike.

She had consistently lived on a diet of canned chicken noodle and spaghetti-os while she had been in captivity.

Hanging the phone up, she sat it back down on the table and looked back up towards Marshall. "Oh, yeah, a bath is fine-" she shook her heard, not wanting him to go out of his way for her more than he already had. "Could you just help me up?" It was possible for Ames to move herself in and out of her chair, so she could make it to the bathroom on her own, but subconsciouskly, she wanted a bit of Marshall's help.

When he lifted her up from the couch and she was pressed into his side, it almost made her want to purr. It hadn't been easy to catch his scent during any of their other meetings, but now that Ames was more relaxed and they were alone... He smelled like thunderstorms.

Marshall was on his feet almost before Ames had even been able to finish asking for his help. He nodded as he stepped forward, leaning down to scoop Ames into his arms. She was light enough that he didn't so much as bat an eye as he moved her into her chair> He was as gentle as he could be as he set her down before taking a step back, to give Ames the room that he thought she probably would want.

"Here, I'll show you to the bathroom and then.. I guess I can grab you one of my shirts and a pair of sweat to put on until we can get out to get you some clothes," Marshall offered as he led his way down the hall, toward the bathroom. He pushed the door open, flipping the light on before he stepped out of Ames' way.

"I'll be right back with the clothes and a towel, okay?" Marshall said before he turned, disappearing into his bedroom. He returned a few moments later carrying the clothes before he grabbed a towel from the hall closet. He set the clothes on the bathroom counter and the towel on the toilet. "I'll leave the door open so you can yell if you need anything, okay?" Marshall gave her a brilliant smile,. "Meanwhile, you're going to finish and come back to a spotless living room," he joked before leading her alone so she could start her bath as she saw fit.

Thunderstorms and pinecones. It was all Ames could smell as Marshall left the bathroom. And she knew it wasn't coming from outside through some open window, because they were dead in the middle of the city. The earthy, forest scent was coming off of him and Ames was beginning to enjoy it.
"Thanks!" She called after him, before listening for his footsteps to disappear down the hall.

It felt slightly uncomfortable, getting undressed with the door opened. Ames moved her chair as close to the side of the tub as it would allow, leaning over to start the hot water. Once she was undressed, she moved herself up out of her chair and over into the tub. It had been a bit of a challenge and she had banged her elbow once, but soon she was sinking down into the hot water, relaxing as it soothed her aching muscles.

Getting out of the bath, now that was a different story. Her first thought, as she looked up at the open door was to call for Marshall. To try to hide herself the best she could and apologize, but she couldn't. Grabbing onto the side of the tub, she pulled herself out and over, to sit on the toilet. Water had splashed out onto the floor, and she had moved the towel out from under her before she sat. Drying herself off first, she then dropped the towel to the floor, moving it around with her foot to dry up her mess.

After slipping on Marshall's shirt, Ames was exhausted. Looking down at the sweats, she didn't want to try and wrangle them on and besides, the shirt fell to her knees... Huffing once more, she gathered the energy to move herself over into her wheelchair, before leaving the bathroom. Marshall's sweatpants still folded over her lap.

Marshall looked up from his spot in the kitchen where he was loading the dishwasher up to start it. One of the many things he was thankful for because he was sure that if he didn’t have a dishwasher, his apartment would have been disgusting. He smiled at Ames, nodding toward the kitchen. “Why don’t you pick something for us to watch when the pizza gets here?” He asked before turning back to the task at hand.

Once he finished, Marshall dried off his hands before heading into the living room. The apartment wasn’t really clean by any reasonable standard but it certainly looked better than it had a few minutes ago.

Marshall raised an eyebrow when he noticed his sweatpants still sitting on the coffee table, where Ames had abandoned them. Setting his hands on his hips, Marshall raised an eyebrow as he looked toward her. “Sweetheart, do you want help putting them on? It’s okay if you do, you know?”

Ames chewed on her lip nervously as she continued wheeling herself into living room as Marshall talked about the pizza. Placing the sweatpants back down on the coffee table, she could feel her heart in her throat. Even if his shirt did cover her, it was still inappropriate. But it would've been impossible for her to put them on herself in that tiny bathroom...

Hoisting herself back onto the couch, Ames curled up in the corner. Conscious of making sure the shirt stayed pulled down her thighs. Her nervousness only skyrocketed when she heard Marshall's steps coming closer and then him mentioning the pants. The way he called her sweetheart... Forcing herself to look up at him, she scrunched her lips together before her gaze fell back to the floor.

"I... Couldn't put them on by myself in the bathroom." She didn't want him coming near her. Her hands picked at the shirt, keeping it pulled down as she spoke to him. Bruises littered her body, cuts and scars. Things she didn't want him seeing. But even those things aside, the thought of Marshall being so close to her, helping her dress when she didn't even have underwear on... It made her thighs tremble. She was worried about the way her nerves might affect her smell.

That monster had always told her she smelled the sweetest when she was nervous.

Marshall's heart skipped a beat when he was close enough to Ames that he was able to detect just how sweet her scent had become. His cock twitched and he had to take a deep breath to force himself to relax, reminding himself that his thoughts and desires didn't matter right now. Ames being happy and comfortable needed to be top priority. "It's okay if you don't want to, you know," he explained gently, forcing himself down on the other side of the couch. "Whatever is comfortable for you. You can always put them on yourself once you retire for the night. You'll have the bed to lay on so you won't have to worry about falling."

It wasn't more than a few minutes before there was a knock on the door. Marshall was quick to stand, making his way over to to the door. He pulled it open, paying the delivery guy before tapping the door with his hip to close it. He was careful as he locked the door, deciding it was best to offer Ames as much security as he could.

"I've got iced tea and water... and beer," Marshall added after a moment as he looked in his fridge for something for them both to drink. He poured himself a glass of iced tea, deciding it was best not to have a beer right now. Grabbing whatever Ames decided she wanted, Marshall returned to the living room with a roll of paper towels tucked under his arm. "Did you want to pick something for us to watch or did you want me to?" He offered as he dished up the pizza for them.

Ames couldn't help but be thankful to whoever when the delivery driver knocked at the door. It forced Marshall to rise to his feet, to leave her side. Sinking down into the couch, Ames closed her eyes and tried to relax. She was under this constant fear that just because Marshall was an alpha he would... Trying to remind herself that Marshall wasn't that monster, that he only wanted to help didn't do much to calm her nerves. His scent lingered in the air as he moved to the door. It was all Ames could focus on.

With him coming back from the kitchen, Ames quickly reached for the remote, flicking the television on and trying to find something to entertain them. Her thumb repeatedly scrolled through the options, until Ames just decided on something. Some comedy movie she had never seen or heard of. Her heart was still beating in her throat, heat radiating off of her face as Marshall returned to the living room. The moment he sat her glass down on the end table, Ames picked it up. The tea gently rocked in the cup as her hand trembled, bringing it to her lips.

"Thanks..for the pizza." She muttered, biting down on her bottom lip. Ames hoped she was just nervous because she was in a strangers home, not just because she was alone with an alpha. The more she was able to relax, she hoped her nerves would disappear. "and I can sleep here," she patted the couch. "I don't want to take your bed."

Marshall hardly paid attention to the movie that Ames had picked, his attention far too focused on the pizza in front of him. What Ames had no way of knowing was that pizza was his absolute favourite and she had managed to put it in front of him. He glanced up, a little grin settled on his face as he glanced toward Ames. He nodded toward the pizza. "Don't mention it. Thank you for picking the pizza," he said with a quiet laugh. "Pizza's my favourite, you did good," he teased with a wink. It wasn't meant to do anything other than tease her, wanting to help Ames relax further.

If he managed to help her continue to calm, then her scent wouldn't be as strong and it wouldn't affect him in the same way. That was a step in the right direction. Marshall knew if he continued to calm her, managed to show Ames that she could be comfortable here... nothing would happen. He wouldn't take things too far. Or so he hoped.

"Nonsense. I have a spare room with a futon. I can sleep in there and you can take my bed. You deserve to be comfortable for once, don't you think? Because i know the hospital bed wasn't comfortable. Don't even try to lie to me," Marshall joked as he relaxed back into the far arm of the couch. "My bed will at least be comfortable enough that you should be able to rest. Sound good, miss?"

A smile pulled at the corners of Ames' mouth as Marshall teased her. Slowly but surely she was beginning to feel more at home, more relaxed. Shifting herself to lie on her side, curled up in the corner of the couch. She reached for a slice of the pizza, as her eyes flicked back to Marshall. The little grin on his face and the way his eyes seemed to shine made him look less dead. Still exhausted, but less. "I haven't had pizza in..." Thinking about it for a second, she brought the pizza to her mouth and took a bite. Covering her mouth with her hand, she looked up at the ceiling, trying to remember the last time she had enjoyed pizza.

"I think I was at Chuck E Cheese for a birthday party... Can't really remember." She laughed like it wasn't a big deal. Like being forced to live in a closet wasn't a horrible thing, just something she had experienced. Eating the rest of her slice, she looked back up at Marshall when he mentioned the sleeping arrangements again.

She still didn't like taking his bed from him. "Well if you insist..." Imagining a man of his size trying to sleep comfortably on a futon. It didn't sit right with her. She wanted to argue with him, but before she could, he was making her laugh again. "The hospital bed was as hard as rock..." She giggled.
