"Princess! Stop!" The guard called out, raising his fist in the air as he tried to follow the young girl through the crowded market. Edith gathered up the skirt of her dress and began to run, weaving through people much easier than the bulking guard. By the time people were alerted to the shouting guard, the dark haired princess had already slipped by them. Suppose just a plain dress wasn't the perfect disguise... Edith had left her cloak on her bed. It was one of the sunniest days of the year and the princess had wanted to feel the sun on her face. Luckily, most of the kingdom didn't know exactly what she looked like.

The princess was usually always hidden away inside the castle, without being able to see visitors or the civilians who came to speak with the king or visit the gardens. She was a sickly princess, usually going through bouts of dizziness and nausea, low energy and muscle aches. But when she felt good enough to, she wanted to live as normalll a life as possible. So when she could, she liked to sneak away from the castle and enjoy just being able to breathe and go wherever she pleased.

Slowing to a leisurely walk when Edith believed she had lost the guard, she turned a corner away leading away from the market and down a little street bordered by a canal. Edith looked up at the many shops she passed, an apothecary, a florist... "Guards! Guards!" Not again... Edith immediately believed it to be a sign she had been spotted again, but before she could even think to look for a hiding place, a man was being tossed out of one of the stores she had just passed by. "Thief!"

The guards on the street corners quickly turned, but not in time to catch the man. Quickly getting to his feet, he ran straight by Edith, only turning the guards attentions to her. "The princess!"

    Damnit...

Turning on her heel, the princess quickly ran after the thief. Dressed head to toe in black, a leather jerkin and a rope belt tied around his waist. She could see a few braids whipping around in his dark hair as he ran. Not sure why she was following him, Edith could only assume, if he was a thief, he would know a good route to take to elude the guards. Turning down a small alley, Edith's boots splashed in the puddles under their feet, the man in front of her almost completely being covered by the shadows around them.

Loud footsteps behind her. Edith stopped, glancing over her shoulder to see the guards stampeding by the alley they had escaped down. Turning her attention back in front of her, the thief was gone. "Hey, where did you go?" Edith called, taking a few more steps in front of her, hearing her boots on the cold ground.

Silas had been sure that the shopkeep hadn't seen him tucking the various jewels and necklaces into his pockets, had been sure that he wouldn't get caught, but before he knew it she was shouting 'thief,' and he was shoved through the door of the store by who he assumed was her husband, and looking up saw a number of guards quickly approaching. He barely heard them shouting for the princess as he took off running, sure that they were shouting about protecting her from the criminal who'd just been identified, and not trying to catch her for running away. He was vaguely aware of footsteps behind him, and turning into an alley quickly he tucked himself away in a crack in the wall near the end, hiding away as he waited for the guards to pass.

He perked up when he heard a girl calling out, frowning a bit in confusion as he risked a look out from his hiding spot to see who had followed him. To his surprise he saw the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen, her dress dotted with the sprays of mud from the puddles she'd run through to follow him. Piecing things together he furrowed his brows as he looked at her, wondering if perhaps the guards had been chasing her, and not him.

After a moment's consideration he slowly slipped from his hiding place when she wasn't looking, knowing he might need to hide himself away again at a moment's notice, and her knowing where he hid wouldn't help him if she decided to rat him out to the guards. "You seem to have a lot of people looking for you.." He called softly, nodding toward the street where the guards could still be heard shouting and running through the streets, looking for them both.

Edith had turned around, her hands reaching out by her sides as if she would grab onto him if she saw him. Her shoulders dropped, coming to the realization that the thief must have just disappeared. If he was a good one, that shouldn't be surprising. The princess was all ready to leave the alley and the memory of the thief behind. Right until she heard his voice from behind her.

Spinning around, her eyes lit up as she looked on him. Leather head to toe, a dagger strapped to his side. He looked like the shadows he tried his best to conceal himself in. But he was dirty, the braids in his hair could use being redone and his skin needed a good scrubbing, still, Edith couldn't help find him very attractive. "Oh, they'll be fine. They'll see me at dinner." It was her best attempt at a tease. Even if it was the truth. The princess would find herself in a much more fitting gown, sitting down at her meal later that evening only finding herself to be berated for sneaking out again by her father.

And then she would do it again.

Edith didn't move an inch, her eyes falling to the ground under her feet, listening to the guards draw farther and farther away. Until their shouting was no longer heard. "What were you trying to steal?" The princess looked back up to the man, finally closing the distance between the two. The mud around the bottom of her dress had stained the blue fabric completely black. There would be no getting it out, the dress would just have to be tossed away. Crossing her arms over her chest, she gave him another once over. "Did you manage to keep whatever you snuck your neck out for?"

Silas chuckled a bit at her teasing, shaking his head a little. "You don't seem overly concerned about them catching you.. And you don't seem concerned about following a thief to his hideaway in order to escape a few guards, who would no doubt return you to safety rather than throw you in the dungeons. Am I right, princess?" He smirked a bit, knowing she'd probably be surprised to know that he recognized her. If he hadn't recognized her the guards referring to her as 'princess' would have tipped him off to her identity, but he'd managed to sneak into the castle a number of times to steal what he could, and once or twice had caught a glimpse of her at dinner or walking through the halls, looking rather miserable despite having everything handed to her whenever she wanted.

It was his turn to be surprised when she asked what he had tried to steal, blinking a little as he stared at her for a moment before reaching into his pocket, tugging out a string of pearls and a few large gems, looking them over for a moment before giving a shrug. "It's not much.. But it'll buy me enough to eat for the next day or two, maybe even a room at an inn where I can have a bed to sleep in for a night, if I'm lucky." He chuckled, shoving the jewels back into the safety of his pocket, sighing as he crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the wall of the alley, studying her curiously.

"Why so interested in a thief? Going to rat me out to your father over roast goose?" He teased, although it was a real concern. If she knew where he usually hid, knew what he'd stolen from the shop, it would make the guards easier to track him, and he'd end up in the dungeons or at the executioner's block before he knew it.

Edith wasn't surprised when her title rolled off of his tongue. She would have never in a million years have guessed he had slipped into the castle on more than one occasion, but the guards who had been tailing them had shouted for her over and over. He must've picked it up from them. Her cheeks tinted slightly red as he teased her, his little smirk making her heart jump slightly. Should she be worried that she followed him? He was a thief, that much was clear, but what if he was also a murderer? The princess hadn't stopped to consider if thief broke more laws than just stealing. "Should I be concerned?" Edith didn't think she had a reason to be.

The princess stepped a bit closer to the thief, a playful smirk on her face. "Darn, you got me. I do love turning in a petty thief to my father," She laughed, her hands falling to her hips. It was obviously just a tease. Her eyes twinkled as she admired the pearl necklace that he held in the air, until it disappeared back into his pocket. It didn't sit right with her what he did, but the princess wasn't about to tell him what he was doing was wrong. And she certainly wasn't about to call for the guards. How could she do that when all he was trying to do was feed himself? Edith still couldn't help feel guilty, wondering whose beautiful necklace that was. Wondering how they would feel when they found it missing.

"Believe me, I'd have nothing to gain from turning you in. You don't have to worry about me." Lifting her gaze to meet his, she admired his blue eyes. How they jumped out at her, amplified by his dark hair and clothing. "Come to think about it, you might've actually been caught just now... If it wasn't for me, distracting the guards for you." There was another giggle from the princess as she teased the thief, a large smile appearing on her face. "So I actually think you owe me something. What's your name?"

Silas chuckled at her teasing, giving a little shake of his head when she asked if she should be concerned. Sure, he'd killed men before, but only the ones who really deserved it, and he had no interest in harming a princess, since it would only cause him problems. He watched her curiously as he showed her the jewels and necklaces he'd stollen that day, noting the interest she showed in the pearl necklace. He'd overheard the jeweler saying that the necklace was for a countess or something, but he was sure she had more than enough money to buy another one.

"That's a relief." He sighed, offering her a teasing smile as she confirmed he had nothing to worry about. He was still on edge, ready to run at a moment's notice, but he was always like that. It came with the profession. He outright laughed however when she said that he owed her, shaking his head a little in disbelief as he grinned. Her laughter and smile were gorgeous, and he was glad she didn't seem scared of him. Most women were.

"I don't know if I have anything to repay a debt to a princess, I'm afraid." He chuckled, offering her a little bow as he introduced himself. "Silas."

"Your name is payment enough, might make it easier for me to find you later. Should I want to." The princess turned her attention back to the damp, murky alley they found themselves in. "Is your hideout back here?" She was full of questions, but it wasn't every day she ran into such an interesting person. "Do you run around with more thieves, like a group? Or is it just you?"

A blush ran across her face when she realized this might've made her look more suspicious. All of the questions targeted towards his profession most likely made it seem like she was lying about not wanting to bring him to justice. "I'm just curious, I promise." She tried to assure him, "but if you feel safer not answering, I understand. When I sneak out, I don't really get to have conversations with my subjects. I'm usually too worried about being caught or them noticing who I really am."

She took a few steps down the alley, spotting the little nook he had most likely shoved himself into to hide from her and the guards. "I'm sure to you this might sound like something ridiculous to complain about, but the castle is a pretty lonely, boring place." The princess finally turned back around to look up at Silas, blushing more when she realized she hadn't formally introduced herself. He knew she was the princess and most likely had heard her name, but still, it was impolite to assume.

"You can call me Edith, by the way. No need for titles."

Silas chuckled a bit, shaking his head as she stepped forward. "A princess asking for me by name will certainly draw attention. Not the good kind, either." He teased with a little grin, laughing as she asked obviously incriminating question, even though he could tell that she was asking them innocently. "Don't worry, I believe you when you say you won't turn me in." He assured her, although he didn't answer any of her questions. Not that he would mind telling her, but it was safer she didn't know, in case someone found out she'd been talking to him.

"Most places are boring and lonely. You just don't see it until you spend time there." Silas pointed out, smiling down at her when she said that he could call her Edith and not by her title. "I'm honored, Princess, but I don't know if being on a first name basis with a thief is really something you want." He chuckled, tensing a bit when he heard the shouting of the guards growing closer again. He'd lingered here too long already, but he didn't want to just run off and leave her in some alley, it wouldn't feel right, even if it did mean he risked getting caught.

The frown that slipped on to Edith's face was obvious when she heard the guards through the streets again. Looking over her shoulder in the direction she could hear them, she cursed under her breath. Of all the times she had managed to sneak out of her home, she had never made one friend. Now, here she was with the opportunity, and every guard in the city seemed to be alerted by her presence.

Turning back to look at Silas, she knew she had to leave him. She didn't feel right putting him in danger, knowing if he was caught it would be life in the dungeons or worse... And considering she recognized the quality of the pearls in his pocket, she knew that was much higher valued an item than he seemed to know, if he thought he could only get a few meals out of it. "I'm sure you're more than just a thief," she countered, before dropping her arms to her sides, hearing the guards growing louder.

"Get out of here before I get you caught." The disappointment in her voice was evident as she began to step away from him. "Maybe I'll see you again!" Edith could only be hopeful as she hurried down the alley and stepped out onto the streets, looking both ways for the guards.

"Princess!" They shouted and before she could turn to see if Silas was still standing down the alley, she was completely surrounded by armed men ready to escort her home.
It had been a week since Edith had first met Silas. She had returned to that alley twice since then, hoping to spot the dark haired thief. But she hadn't. He had disappeared into the shadows like smoke, and while it frustrated her to no end that she couldn't find him, it only proved how good of a rogue he was.

She sat in the gardens outside of the east wing of the castle, the gardens that she could admire from her balcony outside of her room. The princess had been completely captivated by the young man. Even as she sat on the stone bench, knowing she should be planning her party for her birthday for it was soon approaching, instead, she could only wonder if she'd ever see him again.

Silas was surprised that the princess used herself as a distraction so that he could go free, knowing that if they'd been caught together he would have been dead for sure. He gave her a grateful nod and a smile before he turned and scaled the wall at the back of the alley, disappearing over the rooftops.
Over the next week he didn't risk going back to the alley, even if he wanted to in the hopes of seeing Edith again. He found it hard to get her out of his head, but if the guards caught her going there regularly, that meant that they'd catch him, too. The pearls and other jewels had gotten him a week's stay at an inn with meals and baths included, so he had a few days to relax and take care of himself for once, although by the end he knew he needed to go back out and find something that would give him some extra cash for new armor in addition to a bed and a meal. One of the thiefs he knew tipped him off about a way into the castle and where they kept some of the finer jewels, and he was desperate enough to risk it.

He was making good progress when he was nearly caught, having timed the guards patrols wrong, so with his bag full of jewels he climbed out of the nearest window, dropping out of it and hoping he'd have a comfortable landing. Unfortunately for him he landed on a sloping roof, and he injured his ankle on his poor landing and ended up rolling off and into the gardens below, laying on his back as he closed his eyes with a groan. That was it, he was a dead man.

Edith's head shot up when she heard the loud thud behind her. Rising to her feet, she gathered her dress's skirt in her hands and hurried over towards the side of the castle. She could already see him lying there, completely crushing the roses underneath of him, and for a moment, she felt her heart in her throat. Why was he here?

"What are you doing?" Edith whispered harshly, leaning over him. A smile broke across her face, just happy to see him again. "Are you hurt? Can you stand-" Edith abruptly stopped worrying about him, when she quickly realized why he had come. A few inches away from his side, a leather satchel was open, with jewels falling out of it. "You're stealing from me?"

Edith wasn't so sure why she was upset, as if it was surprising. He was a thief after all. The look of betrayal was still written across her face. Before he could even speak, she grabbed the bag from him and looked inside. She didn't care for the jewels and the tiaras stuffed away inside, but some things were important. Grabbing her mother's jewelry, she threw the bag back down to the ground beside him. "You can't have these!"

"If you needed something, I would've just helped you!" She shouted at him, unable to control her emotions. Her mother's jewelry was one of the last things she had of the deceased queen, and if he hadn't slipped off the roof, she never would've seen them again.

Hearing someone waking toward him he tensed, sure he would soon hear whoever it was shouting for the guards, but relief flooded his system when he heard Edith's voice. "Princess... Hello.. Fancy seeing you here." He tried to tease as he sat up with a groan, leaning back against the wall as he held his side, sure his ribs were cracked.

He frowned when she spotted the satchel and grabbed it, wincing a bit as she looked through everything. "Not you directly... I didn't go into your room, if that's what you're asking. Just that room where everyone keeps their stuff. " He explain, although it was obvious she was furious as she grabbed a few specific items from the bag before throwing the rest aside.

He cringed as she shouted, sure that the guards would be here for him soon if she kept it up, and with his ankle throbbing like it was he wasn't going to be able to outrun them. He could t help but roll his eyes though as she said he could have asked for help, biting back a bitter laugh. "Oh, sure. What was I supposed to do, walk into an audience with the king and go 'hello, you don't know me, but I'm a thief, and I know your daughter from when she snuck out a week or so ago. Anyway, the rest of the kingdom and I can't feed ourselves, so I was wondering if you could lend a hand?' I'd be thrown in the dungeons before I could even say hello." He closed his eyes as he rested his head back against the bricks, letting out a long sigh.

"...If you're going to call the guards, hurry up and get it over with. And leave before they come, I have no plans to rot in a cell or get sent to the executioner."

His response only helped anger the princess further. "If you're good enough to sneak through the castle to our vaults, I'm sure you could've found me." Her voice came out in nothing more than a hiss. Taking a deep breath, she tried to remind herself how eager she had been to see him again. Looking down at her mother's bracelets, she scrunched her lips up for a moment and forced herself to calm down.

"These were my mother's, not like you'd care either way, I assume." Her shoulders slouched as she watched him just relax against the brick wall, possibly regretting ever coming here. Part of her wanted to keep berating him, to try and make him understand what he was doing wasn't right, but she couldn't bring herself to. Here she was, getting so worked up over her mother's earthly possessions, while he was trying to feed himself.

Though, there had to be easier, more legal ways of earning some coin.

Huffing, she crossed her arms over her chest. "I'm not going to call the guards on you. I'm going to help you limp your way out of here." It would be easier to call the guards on him, to teach him a lesson about stealing, but she couldn't. She knew her mother would've sooner handed Silas her bracelet off of her wrist if she knew it would feed the boy for even a day. Her mother had always been so generous.

"I didn't want to get you in trouble." Silas admitted softly, trying to find some peace before she inevitably called the guards. He shook his head a little when she mentioned the jewels being her mother's, wincing as he shifted a bit against the wall. "If I'd known, I would have left them.. She was a good Queen." He said simply, meaning every word. Like most of the kingdom he had adored her mother, and had been heartbroken when she died. And he hadn't sought the princess out for fear of getting her into trouble had he been caught.

His eyes opened when she said she wasn't going to call the guards, sharing at her in disbelief. "You... You're not? I'm not exactly someone you don't notice walking down a hallway, especially if I'm with the princess.." he warned. He had no earthly idea how she planned to get him out, especially not with his injuries.

The slight apology Silas gave Edith helped to quiet her rage, even more so when he complimented her mother at the same time. She had been a great queen, the kingdom had been in a much better state when she had been alive to help her father rule. "You're forgetting I sneak out quiet often, thief," she teased him. If he was going to continue addressing her by princess, she would only show him how it felt to be diminished to nothing more than a title in return. "I can get us through these gardens without being spotted."

Leaning down to him, she offered her hands to help him stand up, so he wouldn't have to put any weight on his ankle. The moment he was stood, he doubled over in pain, his hand shooting to his side as he dragged in a strangled breath. "Oh," Edith stepped forward quickly, wrapping her arm around the man's waist to help keep him up. It was obvious his ankle hadn't been the only thing damaged in the fall. "I don't think I'll be able to help you through the kingdom streets in my gown, though. That would definitely draw some eyes..."

Edith helped him towards the castle, to a side entrance she knew guards were never posted at. Luckily for them, her room was close, but unfortunately, up a few flights of stairs. "You're not going to like my idea, but I'm going to make you sure you get some rest first."

Silas snickered a bit at her teasing, especially when she called him thief. He supposed he deserved it though. "I'll be quite impressed if that turns out to be true." Silas observed, hesitating a moment when she offered her hand to help him stand before taking it, groaning as he stood. He didn't put much weight on his injured ankle, but his chest ached in protest, quickly moving a hand to his side as he sucked in a shaky breath, like he'd just been hit.

He let out a little chuckle as she confessed to not being able to help him through the streets, shaking his head a little. "Just prop me up on a bench here somewhere, I'll be fine." He didn't want to cause her any trouble, especially the trouble that would come with helping him if they were to get caught.

He followed her as quickly as he could as they made their way through the garden, assuming she was going to tuck him away in some corner, but he frowned when they reached a door into the castle, and one that led up rather than down toward the entrance. "You're right, I don't like your idea. It's very, very bad." He pointed out with a groan as he tried to pull away from her, although the movement hurt, and for his own sake he decided to stick with her instead.

Edith decided to ignore his complaining, instead keeping herself focused on the task at hand: getting this thief up to her room as quickly as she possibly could, to avoid being seen. Holding her arm around his waist a bit tighter, she began to help him up the stairs, cursing to herself about why there had to be so many. Helping him up the last step, she ran her fingers through her hair as she sighed, "that wasn't so bad, was it?"

Leading him towards her bedroom door, two immaculate tall double doors decorated with gold detailing, she pushed them open and allowed him inside. "Told you we wouldn't be seen," she sighed, only letting him go to turn around and close the doors to her room. If they were caught, she would be in hot water. Not only was she sneaking a boy into her room, but a thief who had just ransacked their vaults. Sliding his satchel off of her shoulder, she dropped the bag of jewels down on her ottoman, before returning to his side to help him to her bed.

It was most likely the most comfortable, plush bed he had ever found himself in. "Just until you can walk again, and then you can take your jewels and be on your way." Edith didn't really understand why she was helping him. He had broken into her home and was stealing right from under her, and yet here she was, helping him to be on his way.

While Edith cursed silently to herself as she helped him up the stairs, Silas was cursing out loud, albeit as quietly as he could. Walking up the stairs with an injured ankle was not easy, and every time he started to lose his balance her arm would tighten around his torso, pressing painfully against his ribs. By the time they reached the top he was sweating quite a bit, and grit his teeth to keep from yelling at her as she teased him.

He shuffled along with her, looking around her room curiously, and when she let go of him to shut the door he started toward one of the plush looking chairs in the corner, although she returned to his side and led him toward her bed, which he tried to protest against, but he laid down in bed nonetheless, and let out a sigh as he settled into the mattress. It was like laying on a cloud, and made the straw beds he thought were luxuries in the taverns look like garbage.

"Thank you, Edith.. I'll be on my way in a few hours, after dark, don't worry.." He promised, wanting to get out of her hair as quickly as possible, especially considering the risk he was putting her at.

The thief calling the princess by name made Edith perk up a little bit, a small smile lighting up her face. "You can rest as long as you need." She remembered how she had told him the castle felt so lonely at times. This seemed like a new adventure, one she never thought she'd be embarking on. Hiding a thief in her room? It was madness...

Stepping back from the bed, she straightened her posture and crossed her arms loosely across her chest. "I'm sure you're hungry?" Her eyes ran over his body as he relaxed into her bed, his dirty shoes smearing dirt across the sheets, but she didn't mind. His tangled dark hair splayed out on the pillow he rested his head on and Edith couldn't help but wonder if he had ever been taken care of a day in his life. It wasn't normal for a princess to take care of anyone, but she'd take care of him.

"Would you like some roast duck?" She laughed, being reminded of how he had teased her in the alley when he thought she would turn him in. Moving over to a small table by her window, she picked up an empty glass and the pitcher of wine that had been left out for her. Pouring the thief a goblet full, she returned to his side and handed it to him. "I hate to bring it up, but who are you selling these jewels too?"
