It was hard to keep it all contained. Standing, waiting for her in the lobby of the airport. Twenty minutes ago, she had told him she was almost there. His hands were shaking, his mind racing... reminding him of what a failure he was. Years, years of service, just gone. Aika, gone. His men, gone. Syverson would never deploy again. Watching a man, a best friend get blown up right in front of ya' will do that to you. Blood and guts had covered Syversons camos. Everytime he closed his eyes, that's all he said. Blood on the sands.

His phone vibrated in his pocket. Abigail was here to pick him up. Keeping a tight grip on his bag, he shuffled out of the lobby, forcing the double doors open to allow him through. His eyes ran down the line of parked cars picking up passengers until he saw Abigail driving his truck. It should've been a happy sight, seeing his beautiful wife, so small behind such a large truck. But it wasn't. It was bitter.

"Baby," he called, looking up at her once he opened the passenger door to his truck. He threw the bag over into the back, climbing in before buckling his seat belt. Abigail knew everything that had happened. Sy had broken down to her just a few nights after the event, over the phone. That was when he had told her he'd be coming home, retired. Sinking down into the seat, he couldn't help but let out a sigh. He was happy to see his wife, it had been so long, but it just wasn't enough to cheer him up. The military had been his whole life. Now what did he have? He was such a strong, dominating alpha. His position in the army had been perfect for him. Now what does he do?

Glancing back up towards Abigail from under hooded eyes, he forced a pathetic smile, his shoulders still slouched. "Welcome home to me?" Taking in a big deep breath, he exhaled and forced himself to move, to lean over and press a soft kiss to his wife's lips. This was going to be a huge adjustment. For everyone.

Abigail still remembered how it felt when Syverson first told her about what had happened. It had broken her heart and it took all of her strength not to break down sobbing on the phone with him. He was already so distressed, she didn't need to make him feel any worse. James may have been like a brother to her but still, he was Syverson's best friend. And he had seen it all happen. At least she hadn't seen it first hand. When they finally hung up, Abigail had completely lost her composure.

Even now as she drove to the airport, Abigail was unsure how she was managing to keep herself together. All she knew was that she needed to take care of her alpha. Syverson needed her to be his rock right now and that was okay. Syverson had always been her rock and now the roles were a bit reversed.

Her fingers tightened around the steering wheel as she glanced toward Syverson. Every inch of her body was begging to reach forward and comfort him but she wasn't sure what he needed right now. Normally, their days after his arrival home were spent largely in bed. More often than not, being together triggered her heat and his rut. But would this be the same? Abigail exhaled slowly and gave him a gentle smile, before leaning over to meet his kiss.

"I love you," was all she managed to convince herself to say. Abigail was gentle as she took his hand, settling it in her lap as she squeezed his hand. "Was there anywhere you wanted to stop before we go home?" She asked, forcing the calming pheromones from her body in an effort to help Syverson relax. His scent wasn't as fierce and comforting as it normally was. Even from here, she could tell how broken he was and it made Abigail realize two things. She needed to care for him and that maybe things were worse than she had even realized.

Syverson pulled bank, sinking against the seat. Abigail's lips had felt so soft and wanting, like they always did, but he couldn't bring himself to kiss her further. "No," he shook his head, keeping his gaze lowered so he couldn't meet her eyes. He felt pathetic. This wasn't how it was supposed to be. "Let's just go home... I'm so ready to be home." His shoulders slouched and he let out a deep breath, doing his best to relax. Letting his eyes completely close, he tried focusing on Abigail's scent.

The drive home was mostly quiet. Syverson laid his head down against the window, barely paying attention to scenery that passed them. It was nothing but interstate until they arrived to the little town he called home, to the even smaller suburban neighborhood they lived in. Sy had worked so hard to give Abigail the perfect little family home, one you could raise a couple of pups in. Something to make her happy when he wasn't there.

He'd be spending a lot more time home now. Pulling into the drive, Sy barely waited even a moment before he jumped out of the truck and grabbed his bag. The man didn't know how to sit and just be still. He was always go, go, go. Sy didn't like being stagnant and that's what he feared the most. Becoming lazy, turning into a pathetic excuse of an alpha. Leading Abigail inside, his hand fell to the small of her back, his fingers barely hanging onto the fabric of her shift.

"I'm going to go upstairs, take a shower..." Sy muttered as he kicked his boots off. It still felt surreal. Like he wasn't just home on holiday, that in a few weeks, months, he'd be deployed again.

Some small, selfish part of Abigail was relieved that Syverson was here. He was home and he was safe. She wasn't going to have to worry about the worst happening anymore. They could start planning to have pups when Syverson was ready to. She was quiet for the ride home, her thumb massaging gently into his arm. It was the only comfort that they could offer each other but she hoped that her presence was doing something for him. She knew how badly he was hurting right now, it was all she wanted to do. To comfort him and make him feel better.

Heading inside with Syverson, Abigail looked back to him with a light smile. She couldn't be as happy as she wanted to be because of Syverson's return. She nodded at his words, turning around to face Sy. "Okay, alpha," she breathed quietly, leaning up on her tiptoes to press a kiss again Syverson's lips. "I'll toss your clothes in the wash and then be right up. Unless you want me to put together a snack?" Abigail offered after a moment, realizing that Syverson likely hadn't had a decent meal in God only knew how long.

Abigail was all too eager to race into the laundry room where she threw Syverson's clothes into the wash. The moment that she had turned the machine on, Abigail was racing upstairs. She was surprised that she hadn't heard the shower turn on yet but she hadn't thought much of it. Until she stepped into the bedroom and saw Syverson laying on the bed. In her nest - wrapped in the blanket that she had just pulled out of the sealed bag so that they could keep his scent.

"Alpha," she let out a small whine as she stepped toward him before stopping dead in her tracks. "Can I... join you?" Abigail felt her heart breaking as she watched Syverson wrapped in their blankets, the only part of him visible was his face. As much as she wanted to wrap her arms around him she damn well knew that she couldn't just take it upon herself. If Syverson was feeling as awful as he had to be, to be wrapped all up in the blankets, it was a delicate situation.

Sy had even made it to their bathroom. Three feet into their bedroom, he had already started peeling his clothes off. Letting his shirt fall to the floor before pushing his cargo shorts down his hips. The alpha had full intention of showering, heading straight for their bath until out of the corner of his eye, on their bed, he caught Abigail's nest. A mound of blankets and pillows, and perfectly folded on the edge of the bed were fresh covers. He couldn't resist it. His body felt so heavy, just so entirely worn down that he couldn't force himself to take one more step towards the shower.

In seconds, the grown man was crawling into the bed, into his wife's nest. A place that was meant to bring her comfort, but now was helping to calm him instead. Grabbing the fresh blankets, he shifted himself around until he was comfortable enough and then completely cocooned himself in the blankets, holding them tightly to his chest. It was warm, like a nice, comforting hug and finally he felt like he could completely relax. His eyes even closed.

Until he heard Abigail's soft footsteps, and then quietly thereafter, her little voice. Cracking an eye open, he couldn't help but feel his face flush slightly. This was something he had never done before, he felt completely vulnerable. But he was only here with his omega, so he should feel safe, right? He was safe... with her. "Of course, 'mega." His voice came out almost silent, barely above a whisper. Licking his bottom lip, he began to peel the blankets open, breaking the shell he had created for himself. "C'mere."

Abigail couldn't decide how she was supposed to feel. Sy nesting was warming her heart in one moment and breaking her in the same moment. It was so wrong that Syverson wanted to next, he was broken... but it warmed her to know that Syverson felt comfortable enough to do that in their home. He was even welcoming her inside. Abigail took a slight step forward, hesitating even as he lifted the edge of the blanket. She swallowed thickly, reaching to peel her dress up and over her head. Knowing how Syverson could be when he returned, Abigail was always available for him. This time was about him, not her.

Dropping down onto the bed, Abigail scurried up until she was laying above Syverson. Her arms slid around Syverson's shoulders and she began to run his fingers through his short hair, her nails dragging against his scalp. Abigail buried her face against the top of his head as he breathed a small sigh. "I'm so happy you're home, alpha," she whispered the words. Abigail felt selfish to be admitting it to Syverson but she could never hide anything from him.

Falling into silence, Abigail was content to lay with Syverson in her arms. She had always been afraid when he left on deployment. She knew what could happen and the thought of losing her mate... just thinking it was enough to cause a lump to form in her throat. "You just let me know what you need, okay?" Her voice was just as quiet as Sy's had been, not wanting to upset the atmosphere that had settled in the room.

Sy lowered his arm over Abigail's side, wrapping the blanket around her, pressing her as close to his chest as was comfortable. He was trying not to think about what he was doing. An alpha nesting... It was almost laughable. What could Abigail be thinking? Seeing her strong husband home from Iraq,...nesting. The longer he was out of the army, the less and less of a man he felt. The less of an alpha he felt. Instead of letting his gaze linger on his wife, he tried to shut his eyes tightly and forget about it all.

It was easier to do with Abigail's nails raking over his scalp, scratching and tracing little patterns over his skin. It was relaxing, helped him to not feel so on edge. He remained silent though. Not that he wasn't happy to be home, but under the circumstances... "Right now, I just need you to lay still, 'mega." It wasn't him scolding her or berating her, just his way of telling her she was doing all she needed to in that moment. Syverson just needed to feel her arms around him, her head resting gently on his chest. That was all he needed to be able to close his eyes and fall into a light sleep.

When he woke, the sun was no longer coming through the windows. The cocoon he had made himself had been ripped apart, blankets strewn everywhere. Even Abigail's nest was in ruins. He did like to toss and turn. Forcing himself to sit up, propping himself up with his elbows, he groaned. Every bit of his body ached and felt stiff, his head was heavy and his sight still blurry. A light nap had turned into hours of hibernation. Looking down at the remains of his nest, he clenched his jaw and quickly pushed himself up from the bed, shaking off the feeling that came with what he had done. He felt weak, pathetic... Not like an alpha should.

"Omega?" Sy called, his face scrunched up in anger, completely ashamed of himself as he looked down at the bed. Without waiting for her answer, Sy began stripping the bed down. Completely dismantling the nest Abigail had worked so hard on. Hours of making sure everything was in the right place, completely erased.

Abigail wanted to tell Syverson how much she loved him. How brave her was. How strong he was. How much she appreciated him, how much she looked up to him. How thankful she was that Syverson was her alpha. She wouldn't have ever wanted anyone else to call her own because even the little moments when Syverson looked at her made her heart skip a beat. The months away from him made her heartache, made her break under the weight of the world. But right now, Abigail had to be strong for him. She just kept repeating that to herself as she ran her fingers through his hair, continuing to do it even as Syverson fell into a light sleep. She had no idea what tomorrow would hold but she wanted to enjoy this as much as she possibly could.

Having rested properly for the first time since Syverson was deployed, Abigail fell into a deep sleep with Sy beside her. Groaning as Syverson sat up, she reached up and rubbed her face. It wasn't until Syverson started stripping the bed down that she actually looked up. She squinted slightly, pushing herself out of the bed so that Sy could finish what he was doing. Abigail stood in her panties, frowning slightly as she watched Syverson all but rip apart her nest. Part of her was upset, okay.. a big part of her. But she was telling herself that this wasn't going to be normal. Sy was trying to sort through what had happened... and he'd just returned home. It would take a bit but eventually, things could turn back to normal.

"Alpha?" Abigail's voice was gentle as she started to move around the bed, holding her arms out to him. "You want me to change the sheets?" She suggested, raising an eyebrow. "Do you want me to start you a shower, too? Start some dinner?" Abigail perked up a bit, knowing that Syverson would just want to relax. "I have some of your beer in the fridge, too. If you want one of those?" She offered after a moment. Abigail had gotten into a routine she followed when Syverson came home. His favourite foods and snacks packed into the home, just waiting for Syverson to get home.

Syverson was focused, his attention completely trained on stripping the bed down. He didn't really acknowledge when Abigail pulled herself from the bed, hurrying off behind him as she wiped the sleep from her eyes. Pillows tossed to the floor. Extra blankets ripped away. Until there was nothing but the thin white sheet blanketing the mattress. Syverson remembered the cot he normally slept on, when he was in the barracks. Just a thin metal cot with one pillow, and a thin blanket that wasn't long enough to cover your feet if you were lucky.

That was all he had needed. Those times were tougher than now. He was still alive, and now he was home. That was more than he could say for his friend, but what would his friend say if he had seen the way he had nested? Syverson didn't need any of that. Picking one blanket up off the floor, he shook it out, ignoring Abigail's requests to help as he smoothed it out over the mattress. He then placed two pillows at the top of the bed. His hands dropped to his hips as he sighed.

"No more than this, 'mega." It was easier to say that than outright demand she couldn't nest anymore. The expression on his face looked like it had been chiseled into stone. It was the same expression he gave when barking orders to the men under him overseas. That Syverson only ever said things once. He turned and began picking up the extra blankets and pillows, bundling them into his arms to take down to the laundry room. "No more nest."

It was just plain mean to take something away from Abigail because it had made him feel inferior. But he saw no other way. The urge to bundle himself up in her nest from just seeing it had been too strong to ignore. He had to cut it out completely.

Abigail started to shift back and forth, visibly uncomfortable when Syverson basically ignored her offers of help. She was his omega, she was supposed to take care of him. Plain and simple, that was her purpose. Abigail had never questioned it, she was content to make Syverson happy. He was her alpha and she was his omega. It was plain and simple. But she felt like she had been stricken when Syverson declared there was no more nesting. Surely he couldn't mean at all - but maybe he wanted her to wash the blankets and start over.

"S'okay, alpha. I'll clean the sheets. And if you want, I can nest in the spare room until you're more settled," Abigail offered because to her, Syverson couldn't possibly mean no nesting at all. It was a way that Abigail helped calm herself down, wrapping herself in Sy's scent when he was off on training or deployment. Or if she was starting to go into her heat or they argued or... so many things. Nesting was essential to who she was.

Abigail twisted around to her dresser where she pulled out a negligee. She knew they weren't going to be leaving the house, likely for a week or so before Syverson felt the desire to leave. She was perfectly content to stay home if it made Syverson happy and it helped him to readjust to civilian life. Shrugging the material over her shoulders, Abigail turned back to Syverson. "Here, give me the blankets. You can relax, baby. Think about what you want for dinner and I'll check in with you after switching over the laundry, okay?" She asked as she reached out, tugging the blankets from Sy's arms.

Syverson didn't like how Abigail was taking his words and running with them. She wasn't listening to him. His words had all but went in one ear and out the other. Could he blame her? Syverson had never made such a demand, had never required such a sacrifice from his omega, but she didn't have a choice. He lowered his gaze to the blankets and sheets that were twisted up in his arms, hearing Abigail turn to the dresser to pull on a little gown.

He didn't raise his head until he heard her speaking again, trying to take the blankets from him. Tightening his grip on the sheets, he made sure to grab Abigail's gaze with his. "No, 'mega. You're not listening to me." Syverson's voice dropped, taking on a completely different tone. It was cold, to the point. "No more nesting." Collecting the sheets completely in his arms, Syverson straightened his shoulders and made sure to stand tall.

"I'll take these down," he insisted, leaving Abigail to stand completely in shock in the middle of the bedroom. Her mouth even gaped open slightly. "I'll meet you in the kitchen." Even without shoes on, Syversons steps were still loud thuds that led out of the room. He took the stairs down to the first floor one at a time, hating the sinking feeling he got in his chest for leaving Abigail there like that. But she didn't even need to nest anymore. He would always be home to take care of her now.

There was something about the way that Syverson spoke that made Abigail uncomfortable. Her brows pulled together as she looked up to him, her lips parting at Syverson put his foot down. No nesting? At all? She huffed, her shoulders pulling together as she watched him disappear out of the room. Abigail shifted, letting out a small whine as she glanced toward the bed. The single blanket wouldn't be a good nest but it would be something and it would comfort her. But Sy had said no nesting. Why?

Abigail let out a shaky breath as she rubbed at her face, trying to remember that she needed to be strong for Syverson. That was all this was. He would readjust soon enough and then they could go back to.. well, as normal as they could. Rubbing her arm, Abigail forced her feet to move as she headed for the stairs. Heading down into the kitchen, Abigail set one of Sy's beers on the counter after popping the lid on it.

Looking in the fridge, Abigail decided to wait for Sy to join her before she settled on what to make for dinner. It was his first night home, Abigail knew he likely had something in mind to eat. Worrying at her bottom lip, Abigail only looked up when Syverson appeared. She swallowed at the look on his face but he was hers, she was his. Not offering to help him went against every part of her body. "You wanna talk about.. what's going on?" She asked as she leaned against the counter, nodding toward the opened beer she had set out for him.

Sy emerged from the laundry room, the cold expression still on his face. It was hard for him to process what he was going through. It had to just be himself trying to adjust to the new change, all of the emotions of losing his career. He just couldn't handle them... That had to be all it was. He just needed time. Stepping into the kitchen, Sy barely needed Abigail to point out the fresh beer to him.

It was in his hand before she had fully gotten her question out. Sy already bringing it to his lips. "There's nothing to talk about," he grunted, not realizing just now much of a dick he was being. "He's dead. I'm not. I should be thankful, but instead I'm just pissed off." That was probably all Abigail would get out of the brute. He didn't like dwelling on his emotions. Syverson would much rather force them down and bottle them up and let them out when he would deploy, but... Well, that didn't seem like much of an option anymore.

"So, what's for dinner," he hoped he could just change the subject. Not talk about his friend, or nesting or the army... He didn't want to deal with those difficult conversations. "Tell me my lil omega is going to make chicken and dumplins'?" It was definitely a comfort food, and that was something Syverson was definitely in the market for.

Abigail crossed her arms, fully prepared to start arguing with Syverson when he declared that there was nothing to talk about. That was bullshit and they both damn well knew that. Before she could respond, Syverson was changing the subject and she couldn't help the way her omega preened at the chance to care for Syverson. It had been so long since she had the chance that she was practically giddy at the idea of being able to cook one of his favourite meals.

She grinned as she closed the distance between them before she leaned up, pressing a kiss to Syverson's lips. Abigail sighed as she lowered back to her feet, looking up to him with a tiny smile. "I guess, if that's what my alpha wants..." she trailed off, squeezing his arm gently. "That's what he gets," she murmured, catching his eye before she winked at him.

Turning back away from him, Abigail began the broth that would be the base of the dish. While it heated through and started cooking the chicken, Abigail started to mix together the dumplings while waiting for the chicken to finish. Once she had shredded it properly, Abigail started putting the dumplings into the water before she put a lid on top of the pot. Sighing as she moved over to the counter, Abigail couldn't help but wonder how long it would be before Syverson started to open up to her. The thought of how much pain he was in, not being able to do anything more than making him dinner at the moment, it made her heart ache. It made her feel like she wasn't doing her job properly.

Syverson was relieved when Abigail let it rest there. For an omega, she had always had a fiery personality and had never been afraid to call him out on his bullshit. He sunk into a chair and enjoyed his beer, watching his wife as she moved around the kitchen. Almost as if she was floating, her feet not even touching the floor. She was a magician when she cooked, at least her meals always tasted like they had magic in them. It was one of the many reasons he loved her.

Picking himself back up on his feet, Sy gently rest his beer down on the table before moving behind Abi. "I'm going to go take a shower... For real this time," he sighed, a slight laugh in there somewhere. He kissed the back of her head before be disappeared out of the room and up the stairs.

The shower had proven to be just what he needed. The hot water pouring down over his face and shoulders, helping him to release all the tension he held in his shoulders. He stood in front of the mirror, drying his face before he slipped his robe on. Turning his head in both directions, he inspected his beard, realizing his mustache could use a little work. Opening the cabinet behind the mirror, Sy searched for his razor, but instead, found a prescription bottle catching his eye.

Grabbing it and lifting the label to where he could read, he instantly felt his stomach twist. Heat suppressants? Wasn't she aware of the risks and side effects? Gritting his teeth, feeling heat consume him, he held the bottle tightly in his grip. Leaving the room, he slammed the door shut and headed for the stairs. The savory scent of the meal she was working hard on filled the whole house, but it wasn't enough to calm him down. "Abigail!" It had been so long since he had scolded her with her birth name.

"What are these?" He growled as he entered the kitchen, tossing the pill bottle onto the table.

Abigail has already cleaned the dishes that she had dirtied by the time that She heard the shower turn off upstairs. She smiled slightly, a bit hopeful that when Syverson returned, he would be in a better mood. Showers were always good for that. Lost in her own thoughts, Abigail jumped when she heard her name. It was so rare that Syverson called her something that wasn’t omega or bug that she was left standing there, a confused look settled on her features when Sy appeared in the doorway.

Her gaze dropped to the bottle that Syverson produced and Abigail felt her heart drop. As far as she had been concerned, the suppressants has been the right idea. Fake knots and the blankets that smelled like Sy, they only got her so far.

Abigail shook her head before she looked up to Syverson with a huff. “You were supposed to be gone for twelve months, Sy. Fake knots and the blankets only help so much. I’m miserable without you here and I needed a way to stop them. Otherwise by the time you get home...” Abigail trailed off, shrugging. “I don’t even want to get out of bed. The longer you’re away, the worse they get. Besides. I’ve already stopped taking them as soon as I knew you were coming home. “

Syverson's face only fell further with Abigail's reaction. He had been expecting an apology, some form of a sympathetic excuse, but instead, his omega was completely on the defensive. It didn't surprise him. "Oh, so it's my fault?" He huffed, his brows raising as he took in everything Abigail had to say. "Do you know what these can do?" He growled, moving forward, closer to blocking her in.

"Are you trying to make it harder on us?" Pups hadn't been something they were currently planning for, but they had been mentioned. It was the reason they lived in a three bedroom home, with a large backyard. They had plans. And suppressants often messed with an omegas heat cycle, even longer after they stopped the doses. Sometimes they could make an omega completely infertile. "'megas deal with their heats all the time, you think you're too special to when I'm away?"

Syverson was furious. Furious at her for making such a dumb decision. Something that could jeopardize everything Sy wanted out of life. "Are these something you take every time I'm deployed??" Syverson's voice was only raising, his face growing redder by the second. The more he thought about it, the angrier be became. There was no reason why she couldn't deal with a few days of heat a month, but instead, she wanted to go and put their future pups at risk. He stood directly in front of Abigail now, his whole body trembling as he waited for an answer. He hoped this was a one off situation, but he didn't know if he could believe that if that's what she tried feeding him.

Abigail had never felt an ounce of fear when it came to Syverson. He was a strong, intimidating alpha and that had been part of what attracted her to him. The moment that she had first smelled his scent, it had pulled her toward him. His salty, sandalwood scent made her heart warm and her body throb. Her vanilla and coconut scent, it worked through his and it had been a matter of moments before Abigail realized that he was her mate. There was no way around it. Even as she introduced herself to him, Abigail had felt her body heating.

Even as Syverson stalked toward her, Abigail wasn't the least bit afraid. The anger on his face broke her slightly, only because it seemed like Syverson wasn't even seeing what her problem was. Like he was only considering him and not how the deployment could affect her. She shook her head as he approached her, her brows pulling together as she stared up at him.

"No. Just this time because my heats were terrible last time," Abigail explained lowly, trying to ignore just how loud Syverson had gotten. She huffed as she looked up to him. "And you wanna know something else? Even if I took them every time that you deploy, it doesn't make me less of an omega. The fact that you even believe that about suppressants.." she let out a dry laugh. "You telling me you never take rut suppressants? Not even when you're deployed? Because let me tell you something, Syverson," she snapped, her own voice raising now. "I don't believe it!"

Abigail let out a dry laugh as she stepped to the side, out from between the counter and Syverson. "The food will be done when the timer goes off. I'm going upstairs," she muttered, fully intent on putting space between them.

Something broke. Here Sy was, upset and over something important. Their future. Her reaction was to laugh and try to leave him standing there? Sy didn't think so. He would teach her a lesson, just as he had taught so many rambunctious soldiers underneath of him. His hand shot out to grab Abigail's arm, forcing her back in front of him. "We're not talking about me right now, lil omega." Sy forcefully slammed her into the counter behind her.

"Alphas and omegas are different," he spat centimeters from her face. "Don't you ever talk to me like that again." It happened so fast, his hand connecting with her face. Before he even realized what he had done, Abigail was in the floor. Part of him was shocked by his action. Sy had never once laid a hand on his wife, or wanted to. It had never been something that crossed his mind.

Squatting down next to her trembling body, Sy adjusted his robe, feeling the collar rubbing against his neck. "Whose the alpha in this relationship, bug?" His voice was slightly softer now, but he still held a crazy look behind his eye. "You don't tell me what you're gonna do," he sighed, before his voice dipped and echoed through the kitchen, "understand?" He was shouting at her like some pathetic soldier underneath of him, one that didn't know his place. It scared him that looking down at Abigail, cupping her face where he had struck her didn't bring on the reaction he thought it would. He had never wanted to hit his wife and if he had ever thought about it, he'd assume he'd break down into apologies after, but he wasn't.

She deserved it. Her backtalk had come off as an aggression to him, a form of challenging his authority. He wouldn't let that stand.
