Everyone in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana knew of the Harrington family. Mr. Harrington was an extremely successful, hot-shot business executive, while Mrs. Harrington had busted her ass and worked her way up through the ranks in the same company. Of course, it probably helped that her husband was the head honcho, but that was besides the point. Their son Steve was one of the most popular kids at Hawkins High. Every pre-teen and teenager at both the middle and high schools had at least heard of "King Steve". Most guys wanted to be him, and most girls wanted to date him. And then there was
Charlotte. The forgotten Harrington. She and her twin brother were polar opposites and almost every sense of the word. While Steve often relished constantly being in the spotlight, Charlotte, Charlie to her small group of friends, preferred to live her life under the radar. She wasn't athletic, she didn't like attending parties, and her only real goal was to keep her grades so that she could skip town after graduation.
Needless to say, there were very few people at Hawkins High that she associated herself with. Truthfully, some of the only people she talked to in town were a group of middle schoolers led by Nancy Wheeler's younger brother who spent a decent chunk of their free-time at the Palace Arcade where she worked. Of course, she had started talking to, and hanging out with, Margaret Henderson a bit more since she often showed up to drag her younger cousin Dustin out of the arcade because he was late for dinner, and she also didn't mind Jonathan Byer either, but that was honestly the extent of the people she associated with in town. Jonathan and Margaret were both a lot like her though, often keeping to themselves, so that made a lot of sense. They weren't loudmouths like Tommy H and Carol, and they certainly weren't like her brother in the slightest.
The only person Charlotte disliked more than her brother's group of friends was Billy Hargrove.
Also one of the only people in town she and her brother both seemed to have a strong dislike for. Despite being new to town, he had successfully managed to piss her off. Maybe she was just holding a grudge because he almost ran her over when he peeled into the school parking lot on his first day, but Charlotte honestly didn't think it was possible she'd ever meet anyone else in her life as obnoxious as Billy. It also didn't help that he had tried hitting on her at Tammy's Halloween party that she so had not wanted to go to in the first place, but Margaret and Jonathan had bugged her enough about it to convince her to attend much to her dismay. That was why she sure as hell had no idea why Mr. Daniels asked her and Billy to stay after class for a couple of minutes. "I'll catch you later." She told Margaret before approaching her chemistry teacher's desk.
Steve was still trying to process what had happened at Tammy's party. He figured it would be good for him and Nancy to attend and let loose for a bit. He knew that she had been having a rough go since everything happened with Barb disappearing, and he was almost certain that the one thing that she needed was to act like a normal teenager and have a couple of drinks on the biggest party holiday of the year. He hadn't expected Nancy to let loose as much as she had, and he certainly didn't expect the evening to transpire the way that it had after he attempted to cut her off from having any more drinks.
Bullshit...you're bullshit. His girlfriend's, well he supposed ex-girlfriend now, words played over and over in his head since Halloween. He knew that he had tried to act like everything was normal after everything that had happened, but he figured that was for the best. Barb wasn't coming back, and he'd certainly seem some shit that he never expected to witness outside of movies and television shows, but that didn't mean that he shouldn't enjoy his senior year and the fact that Nancy had forgiven him and that they were back together. But he'd thought that Nancy loved him, and that was all that truly mattered to him.
In an insane turn of events, apparently none of that was real though. Nancy had been pretending to love him the entire time. Steve had tried his hardest to be a better person for her, to be the perfect boyfriend, but none of it was enough. While he was head over heels for her, she didn't feel even half of what he felt for her. He supposed that was what hurt the most. If she didn't want to be with him anymore, she should have been honest with him. Why had she told him that she loved him if she really didn't? None of it really made any sense, and he hated that he was moping around like a sad puppy dog because of her, but he was honestly still at a loss over everything that had transpired. And to top it all off, Billy Hargrove was trying to take his spot as king of the school. This definitely wasn't how he foresaw the start of his senior year panning out in the slightest.
To make matters worse, he was so going to be late for English. His grades had never been the greatest, Charlotte was always a stronger student than he was, but he figured if he had even the smallest shot at getting into even a community college at this point, the last thing he needed was to show up late to class. And of course, he wasn't paying attention to where he was going as he rushed down the hall and smacked right into someone. That someone being Margaret Henderson, causing her books and other belongings to fall out of her hands. "Crap, sorry, Henderson." He said as he bent down to help her gather her things.
