@ The Detective
It was Peyton’s 18th birthday, days before her senior year of school was starting. This was the last time her and her childhood friends would be able to have fun together before they were going off to separate colleges. She and her friends each got a fake ID, planning to go to the local club to celebrate her birthday and practice being adults. Peyton decided on an outfit that showed off all of the right assets she had. One friend had said they would be the DD so she drove the group there. They all got in easily, their IDs barely being looked at. The girls all headed inside and immediately went up to the bar, the four girls, including Peyton, who were drinking ordered a drink and waited. They looked around at the club, the people dancing, the lights, the music. The girls sipped their drinks before they all moved to the dance floor. Each girl staying close to another one in their group. They knew better than to run off with a stranger or to be alone for too long, it was dangerous. After dancing for a bit, Peyton said she was going to the bar to get another drink. It was in view so the others stayed on the dance floor. Peyton carefully made her way through the crowd an sup to the bartender. She smiled as she sat on the tall chair. “Mojito, please?” She asked and leaned against the back of the chair as she waited for her drink. She thanked the bartender when she got it and begin to sip from the straw. She turned in her chair and looked out at the dance floor watching her friends. She smiled and waved to them before relaxing into the chair again as she drank.

It was just an ordinary day for Matt. He had been spending the past two weeks preparing for his new classes. He had just started teaching after getting his degree. It was his first school, and the stress was starting to get to him, so he’d gone to the bar to let loose. Walking in, he could see people in every corner of the bar. There was no doubt that there were underage kids here getting trashed before school started back up. Weaving through the crowd, Matt made his way to the bar where he came to stop by a young girl. Hearing her order, a Mojito, he contemplated for a moment before paying for her drink after ordering his own. When he got his drink, he sat down two stools away from her, hoping to not come off as a creep. She was stunning though. He stole a quick glance at her before looking back at his phone. How long would it be before drunk women started hitting on him. An hour? Two? It never failed. He knew he was a good-looking guy. Feeling a pair of eyes on him, he glanced over at the blonde who he had bought a drink for. Tilting his glass to say hello, he turned and took another drink.

Peyton went to hand the bartender her card when he told her it was already paid for. She couldn’t help the blush that spread across her cheeks. Who had paid for her drinks? She didn’t realize someone was already checking her out here. She knew she was pretty, but Peyton didn’t feel like she was the type to have guys swooning over her mad buying her drinks. When the bartender pointed out the man she thanked him and smiled, sipping her drink again. Her eyes moved to the guy who bought her drink. He was handsome, and he looked pretty young still. She waved back slightly when she saw that she caught his eye. Peyton got up off her stool and walked over with her drink. She hopped up on the stool next to Matt and smiled as she sipped her drink. “You buy girls drinks often?” She asked with a sweet smile. “Thank you by the way.” She said. Her eyes moved up and down Matt before she glanced back at the dance floor, giving her friends a thumbs up to let them know she was okay.

Matt’s eyes followed Peyton as she walked toward him. He wasn’t surprised that she’d approached him. Watching as she gave her friends a thumbs up he began to talk. “Not often. Only the ones I think are special” he said, glancing into her eyes. “You’re welcome. I’d buy you another if you like” drinking the last of what was in his cup, he waved down the bar tender for another drink of his own. “I’m Matt,” he said, so that she’d know what to call him. This was his favorite bar and he’d had a running tab with them so he could buy Peyton as many drinks as she’d want. Maybe he’d even get her to come home with him for the night. If she preferred he’d even give her friends his number and address so that if she didn’t come home they’d be able to call the cops. “What brings you to the bar tonight anyway?” he asked her

Peyton blushed when Matt said she was special. She was positive it was a line he used on many girls, but it still made her feel special nonetheless. She sipped from her drink as he said his name. “Matt, I like that name.” She said as she finished off her drink. “I won’t say no to another free drink, but you don’t have to.” She said with a giggle, sliding the empty glass to the bartender. “My friends and I are out here celebrating my birthday.” She said and smiled. “The big twenty-fun.” She said and smiled. Peyton looked over Matt, he was handsome and didn’t seem like a creep, always a plus. She wondered what he was doing here. He was alone, so she was wondering if he was here more for the drinks or for the women. “How about you? What are you doing here?” She asked and smiled at him again.
