What do you think of author's notes that ask, beg, threaten, hold chapters hostage for comments?

If you do ask for comments or feedback in your author's note, what do you think is an appropriate way to do so?
I'm not really sure if this kind of 'authors notes' are allowed, but I'm saying this because it's coming into almost every chapter of every story I've come across.

No one wants to read all these kind of comments in every chapter. The reader will comment if they think your story deserves it. Your story isn't about number of comments. If you want to add author notes put them in the summary or inform the readers in the thread of your story.

Personally, those comments put me off from even reading someone's story. It just looks messy.

Also, try not to post chapters with just 'sorry, I'll update tomorrow. COMMENT!' The purpose of chapters are for the story.

also notes like... if you dont comment I'll kill someone... if you plan to kill them cos it fits the story then fine but as revenge for people not commenting? Ugh! Puts me right off that and then I don't want to comment...
I never force comments... I appreciate knowing a chapter is liked but people chose for themselves

Threatening and asking for a specific number of comments per chapter before updates is really despicable.
Nobody wants to be threatened and you'll lose readers, and mods don't need the amount of spam one person puts on a comment thread so that the story will be updated.

I HATE when I see that.
I mean... have some respect for your readers, please! oO
Writers need to focus on making their story one that people would want
to comment on, and spend less time threatening their readers.

Although I will still read them if they are very good...author's notes put me off and generally raise the bar for the standard needed to keep me reading.

    Agreed.
I only use them if I have a need too...

Like for instance, Chel wrote a spinoff on Matters of the Heart and Dru wrote Ryrard, like Sick and Sain. So I recced them in a quick note...

And at the end, I like to thank people and such. But I definitely agree. "PLEASE COMMENT" is stupid.

I really don't get that; even if I read a fic if I don't have time to comment then obviously I won't; ie if I've got to be out of the house to catch my bus ect.
I don't mind an author's note saying that they won't be able to update for a certain lenght of time; however that is to a few who do update frequently, like say every couple of day's, but that's just me.

I understand having authors' notes a couple of times within 30 chapters, but asking/telling the reader to comment isn't necessary within each chapter.

Personally, I think there shouldn't be any Authors' notes in any chapters, even if it is just a 'sorry I haven't updated in awhile' comment...That's why threads are there, but of course comments on the threads should be made within moderation.

For me; story chapters are for the story only.

When I edited stories, if I saw a note at the bottom that asked for comments, I would tell them to remove it. It puts you off as a reader, and personally, it's very tacky.

I think I've asked for two comments before posting the next update.
But I post it in the story comments thread.
I generally do that if I have a few chapters already set to go, that way I get a few comments on each one instead of less comments when I post three chapters.
I also post that I've updated there.
    Give previews, etc.
That's where things like that belong.
And if you want your reviewers to be nice and review, you should be nice when you ask.

Personally, I really don't like them. Especially when they only post about three paragraphs that count as the chapter, and then demand comments and say things like 's0rri i+ +00k zo l0n9'.

Okay, so that's an extreme case. But still, if someone is going to read your story, and comment, they don't need you screaming in their face to do so.

    I almost never do it
just stuff like references or a quick definition if I use strange slang but I HATE people going all COMMENT COMMENT COMMENT on each chapter, specially if they already have like 100 comments on their story
I put on summaries "Will update after recieving 4 comments per chapter"
