I can't stand when people are like "I need ___ comments then I'll update" but I actualy do sometimes post at the end of my chapter asking for comments. And I do post "chapters" because it's ridiculous when you see how manyy people have read an update, compared to how many have commented.

My best friend, Steph, her story "Unfaithful" has about 60 people subscribed, and she used to get so many comments. She still gets as many readers , and her last one, she has said about 30 people read it, and only 5 commented.

The same thing happens to me too, and I don't care if you wanna hate me, but that is ridiculous.

Sure, people say we shouldn't care about comments, but comments are what make us better writers, especially when people aren't afraid to give a little bit of criticizm.

And the thing with posting "Sorry I haven't updated" "chapter" thing. People do that because not everyone visits the comment thread. Posting it in a "chapter" sends the email to the readers, so that's how I feel that they know. I don't post stuff like that in the comment thread, because who honestly goes through all the comments besides the author? Not many of us do, I don't. I go to the comment threads to leave a comment on a story, not to read what other people are saying about it.

this isn't the place to be posting that, try the Pimping and Reccing thread, or the chat section.

I understand that, but it's pointless. I doubt anyone is really interesting in knowing that you couldn't update because your computer exploded. You update when you update, if the reader wants to know why you haven't updated they'll probably ask, tbh most readers won't ask that.

The reader probably gets excited to see and new chapter and then they see the new chapter as just 'oh, sry, couldn't updated. I will tomorrow!'

And people, read the first post. This isn't a thread to ask for comments. (:

When I edited stories, if I saw a note at the bottom that asked for comments, I would tell them to remove it. It puts you off as a reader, and personally, it's very tacky.
    It's SO tacky.
    I see it as desperate...
    I agree.

Every time I see someone put "3 comments till next update" or words to that effect in their short descriptions, my incentive for reading the actual story plummets completely.
Half the time, I just go back to the story board and find another one.
Having someone threaten to stop writing a story because of lack of comments often makes me decide to stop reading it.

I don't understand people who want a specific number of comments for each chapter anyway.
I'm over the moon when stories I post get one comment in the entire story.

Also, if an author who says, say, "3 comments before next update", gets only one comment, but that comment gave a really in-depth and thought-out review, would the author still wait for two comments which could say as little as "that was good" before they updated it again?

Andsurely the enthusiasm for writing shouldn't come from the simple basis of comments anyway.

I agree with everything you say :)

Yes comments can increase the star rating but I don't demand them. The only times Ihave asked is after a prologue to know if it's a good idea or not. Mind you,for Fragments Of A Broken Mind I asked and posted chaper one (well two) almost straight away as indpiration struck and I liked the idea... comments didn't matter then :)

I agree. Though there is writing for the enjoyment of writing and then there is writing and posting it up on a website that hosts fiction. If people enjoy writing just for the enjoyment that writing gives then they don't have to post it and then get delosioned by having no comments. People post fiction on here to get comments. Nothing major, but if you get a really indepth review that tells you what they liked about your story or what changes they think need to be made ect then it's all for the better if you want to be a writer on the net.

I only do it if I already have the updates ready to go that way I know if they like the chapter before I do mass rapeage post.
But generally I don't even actually wait as long as I say I will.

I've only put 'please comment' on a few chapters of both my stories for one reason. I wanted to know how many people were actually reading, so I knew how long to wait before I should update again. I didn't want anyone to get behind on updates since I hate when that happens to me.

The only other author's note I've put was at the beginning of me "new" story. I told people to subscribe since I was done telling when I updated, and that I wouldn't be updating fast, so to keep an eye out.

I never threaten to stop, though. I always have five readers that would kill me if I stopped. I mean, five readers are enough to keep me going, so I don't care.

I do that too. That's the only author's note I usually put in - but I do it in the summary.

I should probably do that for people, because I'm a slow update and I hate PM'ing people everytime I update. It's not really that hard to click the subscription button if you like a story and want to read more....

Alright, so I've been glancing a this thread, and I've noticed that all of you don't like ANs and whatnot about commenting but what about corrections? My new fic is set in the 1920s so I basically just stated that in the description itself; seeing that, would anyone be put off from reading it?

    Just wondering.

Sometimes I suggest people comment in the summary, because I know there are so many people who don't comment, but I don't agree with author's notes. Unless it is a footnote to do with something in that specific chapter, I don't think they should be used.

However, it doesn't stop me reading a story or influence my decision to leave a comment...

I'll put a footnote at the end of a chapter, say, if I used lyrics from a song in it or something along those lines. Otherwise, author notes kind of annoy me.
