I'm not sure if this is supposed to be on this thread and/or if it's already there [I get highly confused easily, haha.]
But, how about you guys, are you vegetarians or vegans or want to be? If so, why did you go vegan/vegetarian.

I'm a vegetarian, never tried to go vegan [parents would allow it over they're dead bodies, being a vegetarian is way enough for my father] and I did it because I disapprove highly of animal cruelty, also for my health, but that was way after I became a vegetarian because I noticed I was way healthier.

I want to be one. I have tried a couple of times because I was influenced by my friend who is a vegetarian. I think eating meat is wrong but I have problems finding things I would be able to eat otherwise.

Aristotle -I think, I may be wrong but it's an ancient Greek mathematician/philosopher- was the first vegan ever. He also never ate beans or seeds and though everything in our world revolves around numbers.

I've been vegetarian for about a month/month and a half and then gave up because I realized that you need to eat an equilibrating diet. You need meat too. About animal cruelty, dunno, in the EU there are pretty strict rules about that and most -if not all- animals are killed in such way they don't feel pain.
Just don't eat meat every day.

You really don't need meat. Seriously. I was a vegetarian for years, and I am trying to be veggie again. My mum's a vegetarian and a doctor. There are other ways of gaining what you get from meat. I don't want to be vegan myself, because I think that's too restricted and it draws out too much of your diet, but you really don't have to have meat. You can do fine without it.

^ Completely agreeing with you, Disablor. I do want to be a vegetarian for the rest of my life.

And you don't need meat, it's not necessary, there's beans and peanuts, those have LOTS of proteins and also soy meat (not a fan of those,though.).

I do think that animals should live and die humanely. I personally, however, feel no desire whatsoever to become vegan or even vegetarian. Rag me for it, but in my life, meat is essential to my diet. Don't tell me I can eat peanuts - my brother is allergic - and I have no desire to eat tofu or beans for the rest of my life.
Plus meat just tastes so damn good...

I became a Vegan for a day, well... My work was doing it and so I had to do it... It was not fun, you had so much stuff that you couldn't eat and you had to check that the stuff was vegan friendly; which was really hard to find in my local supermarket; so I went to a health food shop instead... Soya Milk isn't exactly nice.
To be vegatarian... I love my meat too much. Preferably local.

You don't have to eat beans and tofu though. I hate tofu. You can just leave meat out of your diet, and you can still get enough protein.
But yeah, most meat does taste good. If it wasn't so nice I would have given it up in a heartbeat but I'm finding hard to lay off it completely.

I can't live without meat. My diet is specifically designed for my lifestyle and without meat I think I would go into withdrawal.

^ ^ Before I was a veggie, practically the only meat I ate was chicken, so I didn't miss it at all. And now, I still don't miss meat, there's so much other stuff to eat anyway.

Haha, I hate soymilk. I tried it like twice, once I hated it and the second time, I tried to get used to it, but nothing. Mom brought it for me, I was happy [I think it was because the soymilk carton is cute...] but then I tried combining it with cereal and yuck. </3

I'm anemic so I need certain meats and veggies in my diet. Without it I get really sick. I'm aware there's Iron pills but 1. I don't believe in taking pills every five minutes for something else. I'm very paranoid on what goes in my system. 2. They help about as much as t3s do for my leg. In otherwords, not a whole lot.

I'm also a really picky eater and only eat certain foods. So, cutting meat out of my diet leaves me with pretty much nothing.

Actually I've just read an article on how bad is it for kids not to eat meat or dairy products, especially milk when they are still young.
Also we actually do need meat. Meat is brainfood and our ancestors used to eat it and we still have the same genes as they did.
As a matter of fact my mum's a doctor too, and she's not a vegetarian and she was actually the one who stopped me from becoming one.

I would rather eat a stake than take a pill.

I've never had any sort of meat in my life. My parents are Hindu, and no one in our family has ever had meat. I'm not Hindu myself, but I still intend to remain vegetarian because I am against animal cruelty. It is really not that hard for me to maintain my diet, mainly because I have no access to meat except for at school [and honestly that meat is not particularly appetizing], and since I have never tasted it, there is really nothing for me to miss.

I intend to go vegan once I am a little older. I am still trying to lose weight and such a radical change would probably make it even harder. My brother recently read the book An Omnivore's Dilemma and apparently there is a lot of cruelty even the production of eggs and dairy products. I really really would miss milk though. Sad

But our bodies do not necessarily need meat. Whether or not it was our ancestors' brainfood is not relevant. Our genes have changed, through evolution, which is why while our ancestors [aka cavemen] ate raw meat, it is generally agreed upon that this is unhealthy for modern day humans. Meat mostly provides protein, and you can get protein from eggs, tofu, beans, and other foods. Though I agree that vegetarian diets can be unhealthy, which is why some doctors advise against it, if a diet plan is carefully prepared, it can be just as healthy and sometimes even healthier than a diet with both meat and other foods.

Another reason I stay vegetarian is because, quite honestly, I find meat gross. I know this is a result of my upbringing and lifestyle, but I find the process of preparing and making meat rather disgusting. I would definitely rather take a pill than eat a steak.

I never really want to go vegan.THAT is way too hard. Basically everything has milk and eggs in it.

Also, I want to apologize if this thread in anyway made me seem like I'm against meat-eaters or trying to push someone into vegetarianism. 0_0;; Dear God,no.

And yes, I agree that cafeteria food isn't appetizing at ALL...It looks gross. (I could swear my beans moved when I was in school...)

Yeah I think I'd be a bit selfish if I became a vegan because my parents wouldn't be able to find a lot for me to eat

^ ^ ^Oh no, I'm not against meat eaters at all, either btw

Really? Well I'd rather take a pill than eat a slaughtered animal. And what does a pill have to do with anything.
Our ancestors ate it because there wasn't that much else to eat. Fruit, plants, meat. That's totally understandable. But I just feel that we've got so much other stuff now to sustain ourselves. Bread, beans, vegetables etc.
I'm not saying eating meat is bad, since on some occasions I eat it but I don't eat it regularly because I feel guilty eating a dead animal when it could be avoided.

If we need meat how come so may vegetarians manage fine without it? My mother doesn't eat any meat, she's just as fit, clever and healthy as my father who does eat meat.

What is in meat that isn't in anything else? Why would you choose to eat a slaughtered animal before a pill? That's just cruel to me.

I have been vegetarian since the age of 12. And vegan since February '07. The meat industry is disgusting

I do need meat. You don't know the health of everyone in the world so don't say that everyone doesn't need meat. If you want to be vegetarian go for it but don't push other people and tell them how they eat is cruel. Pills aren't natural and I refuse to run my life based on pills. If you want to have fifty different vitamin pills go for it, I think it's stupid. You don't know what is in the pill.
