How Often Should You Update?

  • I update when I can, or when the update is available, unless one is pre-written, then I just wait a day or two. But me updating daily is a very, very rare occurence. It usually happens when I've just started a new story, because I get excited about them. :tehe:

  • I update when I have enough time to write a chapter and when I feel like writing. People who read my stuff can usually put up with it but when its gunna take ages for an update I tell them. I usually update at least once a week.

  • I believe stories should be updated when the author is fully satisfied with what they've have written, whether that be every day or a month. If it's rushed, readers can tell and it won't be as good as it could have been.

When I'm a reader, I'm willing to wait for updates. When I'm a writer I try and update when I can but sometimes I just can't.

  • Pretty soon after their last update not ages after because some people can forget and/or loose interest.

  • An update should be posted when it is ready.
Forcing updates for the sake of updating is forcing a natural process to happen unnaturally. It will never be as good as when it just happens.

  • ^ Exactly.
Sometimes, I feel bad if I haven't updated in a long time, but if that's the case then it's because the chapter I'm on just isn't working for me.
I'd rather make them wait for something at least slightly worth reading, rather than forcing out a bunch of crap.

I got chewed for doing this. I will never force another update in my life :tehe:

  • My updates depend on three things.

Mood: Sometimes I'm just not in the mood to go through and tidy up a chapter before posting it, it just feels like a chore on those days.

Chapters: I have to be three chapters ahead of the one I'm about to post. If I'm not, I feel like I might need to make a change to something, like a fact that is stated a few chapters back, but if it's already posted I can't just change it out of nowhere, because no-one will have read it.

Comments: I know that sounds bad, but knowing that people read and enjoy my work really motivates me...and puts me in the mood to actually post a chapter, and makes me want to write more.

See, it all links in a big ol' vicious circle :con:

  • I used to update quite a lot (like every other day), but since homework has become even worse, I usually only update on the weekends now. Sad I like updating a lot.

I really hate that, but I was once guilty :shifty:
I don't update that much now, I can never seem to get the creativity flowing.

  • I totally understand it's hard to update often if you have a busy life or even if you've just ran out of idea's etc but honestly?
If you you leave it for weeks I have to go back a chapter just to remember what the darn story was about and when you look forward to reading a story it's a bit of a kick in the teeth when you know it'll be ages before the author updates.

  • It kind of bugs me when I go on a certain writers stories page and see that they have like ten stories that are all chaptered, but haven't yet made it past the first chapter and haven't been updated since May last year or something.

I'm not criticising anyone, it just annoys me because I'm a generally impatient person. :tehe:

Same here. That's why I've made it so that I update ever other day. I have three different stories going at the moment. I update one on the first day and the other two the following day. It's a cycle, done so that I'm not updating every day to give my readers time to read the new chapter, but I also give them an update. It works well, particularly since the stories are prewritten. Otherwise, I'd have a completely different system.

  • At least once a week, otherwise it's hard to remember what happened. I once read a story where the person updated like twice everyday. That was too much. I wasn't able to keep up. I personally like the stories that update enough where you can keep up but not so much that it feels kinda special or whatever.
    March 8th, 2009 at 06:56pm
  • I think once a week is good. Updating twice a day is a little bit much...

It's all just my opinion, of course.

  • I like, when I go on vacation, for there to be a couple of nice updates waiting for me after a week. But, when you have none there, or you have 10 for the same story, it get's annoying.

  • I get on streaks where I will update my chaptered story every day, and then I just stop for a month. The time flies; I don't even realize it's been a month, and then I get back on a streak again.

I think you should update when you have inspiration and when you feel the need to write. I get the itch to write sometimes, and if I don't have it, I don't bother. I can't force myself to.

I only update when I know I can't improve a chapter beyond it's current state and I'm happy with it. The story will never be right to you or your readers if you write under pressure or if you're not happy with it.

  • I hate when people update quickly with crappy chapters that are less than 200 words. To me that is not trying at all. I update my stories (Only one at the moment) about like every five or six days sometimes more if I have writer's block. Most of the chapters range from 700-1,000 words, though. To me that takes effort and time.

I don't like when chapters are 200 words, but I don't think one should force themselves to keep writing when they feel the chapter's been completed, you know? Most of my chapters are closer to 1,500 words but if I hit 500 and my point has been made I post.
But I get when what you're saying, when they're crappy chapters and there's a whole bunch of updates, that's a big no-no.
