I enjoy writing original fiction more than fan fiction. I think it expands my own personal creativity, and it takes me out of the box. In original fiction, I get to create my characters. I get to mold them into everything and anything that I want. I don't like writing Fan Fiction anymore because my brain gets poisoned with these cliches and my stories turn out as crap. It takes an amzing writer to write incredible fan fiction and it takes an incredible writer to write original fiction. Either way, for me to read it, it has to be at least somewhat original, and very much well written. That's my stance.

I prefer fan fiction for settings like Mibba, where an original story isn't going to get much attention. Additionally, it's a lot easier to write about people I admire- if I feel passion for them, what they do, then it's easy to portray that in a story. Fan fiction is more fun too, making pairings, creating your own scenarios, rather than original fiction where it's only fun to someone who really knows and understands the characters. Like, someone who had never heard of Ryan Ross and Hayley Williams wouldn't understand how odd it would be if they were together in a fan fiction, and someone who didn't know who original characters were in a book wouldn't understand the humor that the author was putting in. I don't know, I'm rambling again.

On the other hand, I like original fiction, and I plan to write original fiction for the rest of my life. I like creating my own characters, making up little fantasies in my mind. I get to manipulate their lives as if they're real people, I get to decide everything, and it's like they're little pieces of art.

I write original fiction just due to the fact that I couldn't stand writing about some celebrity 600 people have already written about. With original characters you have the right to do whatever you want to them and make them whatever way you want. With Fan-Fiction you have to make the celeb character act the way they would normally act.

Also there are so many fan-fictions out there I'd just be adding to the mess.

^ I agree. I am a orignial writer and I really don't read fan fic that much oringial to closer to me because that's what I know how to do best.

Writers are writers weather it's fan fic or original fiction we're all doing the same thing. Mibba is a creative writing site not a fan fic site.

    Not necessarily.
This is why I absolutely adore alternate universe fan fiction.
Plus, it is still a character. A character based on an actual person, yes, but still a character. We don't know how the celebrities act. It's just our opinion on how they do.

I like fanfics. Because I already know who should I imagine when reading plus, it doesn't make me feel... boring. Because, the characters I read are the ones I like. OF's? I only read them when published. :XD

I'm not completely against fanfic, but I read about 10% fanfic, 90% original fic here. That's because
a)there are a lot of clone stories out there and
b)I don't care for the mainstream rockbands too much.(to be read 'I care close to not at all).
I'll read a story if its fanfiction-ess is possible to get over because it's so good, but that happens pretty rarely.
I don't deny the fact that fanfiction is an expression of creativity but creating your own characters is different, much more complicated, but more rewarding if one does a good job.
Anyone write Metallica, Nightwish or Epica fanfic. I'd read that, oh yesh.Wow

    what about non-canon fanfic?

where there characters have the names/appearance of famous people/characters, but the CHARACTERS and setting [or universe] are original.

sorta a halfway-house between FF and OF.

what do we think of that?

[am curious because this is my pet 'genre', hehe. if you don't get what i mean, take a glance at my profile, most of my stiff is non-canon fanfic.]

True, I would just find it harder to write about an actual person.
I'm not against fan-fiction or anything but I find it really annoying that there are like 98598 of them about a girl getting kidnapped by My Chem or 457358 of them where the girl gets to go on tour with PATD.

It's referred to as either Alternate Universe or Alternate Reality depending on whether it is the characters or the setting/world that break canon.

I love it. It's my favorite genre, AU.

I prefer fanfiction. I really can't say why. I guess it's just easier to see/write the characters.

I do read some original fiction though, but I'm really picky about it. I don't read original romance stories. I only read it if it's horror/mystery. I just can't get into it otherwise. I'm the same way with novels....

I don't like fanfiction because generally it's all the same. Some teenage girl gets "saved" by a band. I like to read plots that aren't normally shown. The other reason I don't like fanfiction is because I'm sick and tired of seeing those names. I would like to see a new character once in a while. Sure, people make Gerard so unlike him to the point where he is an original character, but that's not good enough. The looks are the same. Whenever I see a name and looks of a band member I get pissed because that's all I can imagine throughout the story.

People say they like to image who they're reading...you can do that with a made up character. So what if they're fake. You can make them look however you want then. I'm sure every single person who is obsessed with Edward from Twilight has a different picture of him in their minds. Hell, when I was reading The Vampire Chronicles I always imagined Lestat like Robert Plant. xD

As you can tell I only write Original Fictions. I used to write fanfictions about two years ago on INO. They were my stepping stone and sucked to no end. I like to make up my characters and do whatever I want with them. When I wrote my first Original fiction it was going to be a fanfic. But I was having a hard time giving the personalities I had laid out to MCR. Plus, I wanted to give them a different look.

I will read fanfics, though. But I'm very picky. The only authors I'll normally read a fanfic from are Sardonic Grin and Zodiac.

if you think they're 'all the same' you're not reading the right ones!

it takes a LOT of trawling, but there are loads of really quality fanfics out there, with beautiful, original plotlines too.

As a writer I enjoy writing both original and fan fiction. Good fanfiction can be considered original as well from the concept as it doesn't have to abide by the traits of the characters chosen; you can still get creative with the character even if it's based on someone real. It's somewhat of a challenge for a writer to delve in the mind of the person he's writing about; but evidently that theory of work is more flexible with OF since the character's are very much from the writer's imagination and can mold them as he desires and add twists and make them more believable as in fanfiction some of them can't pass as believable [except if you have a really good grasp on your choice of words and how to form the emotion and make them well-rounded you can pull it off]

And as for fanfiction being the same I really don't think that. It can depend on the band; but in general I don't use girls as characters for my fanfiction and I usually don't read fanfics with that same plot and you can spot the bad ones from their start.
Original is more enjoyable for me to write as it can be experimented with more than fanfiction and is more flexible as stated before.

I write original fiction just because that's how the stories come to me. I have to mysterious or rational explanation or reason for it. When I picture a story, I do it with OF characters. However I don't have a problem with people seeing them as rockstars/celebs. The face or identity of the characters it's unimportant, it's the way they're built that matters.

I don't have a favorite genre, I'm just particularly fond of good stories.

I actually have a few stories that can stand as original fiction, but posting them as fanfiction is oh-such fun and a terribly guilty pleasure of mine. I do plan to publish them someday.

I see that with a lot of fanfiction too.
Usually it's what happens so that people come up with AUs.

We just like to build stuff around an originally existing character, get into his mind, and make him into our own.

I admit that making OCs are challenging and enjoyable too, and more often than not I actually get attached to them.

But sometimes, there is a message I wanna broadcast and I do want to be heard, so to cater to a larger audience (at least, online) I turn to fanfiction to get it across. You can't deny that more people listen, or at least it's easier to get them to listen, so I do respect solely original authors too.

I suppose it's all a matter of choice then.
I don't like to change my stories or make them different from what I see even if I think my vision is not ''stylish'' or ''fun''. I just write how I feel and don't think that much about the aesthetics.

Don't take this the wrong way, I admire for having the patience and skills to turn your stories around so that they'll be appealing to everyone, I just chose not to. Because I'm selfish.

It's a matter of choice. You can chose to write OF or FF. I respect your choice and I respect you as an author.

I don't really understand how writing fanfiction is any easier then original fiction. You don't really know who the person is so you have to build the character anyway. The only thing you don't make up in fanfiction is their appearance.

I personally think it takes a lot of skills to write good fiction, both original and fan-fic. It’s just that it takes different skills.

I don’t prefer one over the other (neither writing nor reading) but I tend to read and write more fan-fic here on Mibba. I read more fan-fic because there’s more of that around and I read any kinda story that’s good. And I write more fan-fic than original because I have more inspiration to write fan-fics at the moment. And I’m too lazy to write if I don’t feel like it. x ]

Irrelevant side note: since I’m not a PATD fan those stories are almost like original fic to me. :tehe:
