Even though I mostly read fanfics (since there is way more of it) I only read select authors. Sara and Isa mostly. :tehe:

I personally like fan fiction because I'm comfortable with it ya'know?
I know who the characters are, I can imagine them doing certain things, It's just easier on my brain in general.

Another thing I like about fanfiction is that you can change the characters from their normal standard and make them stand out more. If you're writing original fiction you can do whatever you want with your character, but it's not like you're breaking the rules or anything. I like to know that I am doing something different with my characters and storylines. Writing original fiction wouldn't give me that sort of pride in my work [personally].

I like Original Fiction mainly for the fact that the characters can be anyone and look like anything.
They can come from any country and have any type of dialect, there is no limit on original characters.
The plots can be what the author pleases, to me it doesn't look right when you put a band member in some other worldly plot outline.

It looks right if the author is good. Personally, AU fanfiction is my favorite.

I still don't think it looks right, even if it written well
its not the author in no way am I saying their abilities aren't good, it's just for me I know there people are famous and everyone knows them for that thing they do, so it just doesn't compute with me when they are doing something like riding a dragon, or something

    Writing:

If writing a sequel to a story that never had a sequel (that doesn't mean Twilight, it's already a series) is considered fanfiction, then yes, I do enjoy writing it. I especially like it if the OA (Original Author) kept you guessing about what happened after the story ended, it's really nice to spawn some ideas off of that.

I'm actually writing one right now, it's titled Watch The Sun Fade Into the Horizon, a sequel to The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton.

    Reading:

I love both types of fiction, but mainly original fiction because it's an entirely new character (if the author is creative enough) and it opens a new world of stuff. I like it if the author adds in a well-recognized person, maybe even a band member that they grew up with and are still friends with, or something along those lines. But if that's the case, than the story shouldn't revolve around the band member, but the actual main character that they created, otherwise it's considered a fanfiction.

i only read fan fiction apposed to original... because for some reason original can't seem to hold my attention for too long... but then again i just may no have read any of the good stuff yet...

I think half the fun of fan fiction is taking an actual person and turning them into what ever you want them to be...The imagery is already there.

I think the strength of a good fan fic can be proven if you take away the famous names and it can still stand on it's own.

    Not many can do that.

i like reading and writing original (usually slash) stories.

with fan fic, it only takes so long before it starts getting repetative.
i mean, look at all the ferard stories out there, they all involve depression, rape, alcohol, secret longings for each other, and it is really hard to do something original outside those terms.
after awhile, it starts getting old.

while with original, you can make up stuff more easily. it doesnt always have to be in 1 certain town or city like fan fic. it can be way more random and stuff (not that you cant do that with fan fic,, but most people dont).

*sorry if i.... disrespected i guess would be the best word?... anyones beliefs with the mention of slash*

    fskljklr.

No, not necessarily. Sorry, I'm totally not attacking you specifically here, but this is something that really irks me. 'Frerard' out of most pairings tends to have the worst reputation among writers because it is seen, en masse, as clichéd and, well, easy. In fact, I think that half of the challenge is to take a subject or pairing that is, admittedly, a little overused, and turn it into something original.

It's my favourite kind of thing to read on here mainly because people have done just that. I prefer fan-fiction because I like to see a writer take a person, or a group of people, and use their own interpretations of them. As many fan-fictions as there are out there that seem exactly the same, there are always a few that are as beautifully written, intelligent, interesting and gripping as any original fiction, maybe even more so.And the main reason I prefer writing fan-fiction is because I'm lazy.

I like fanfiction best because it's about characters I already know and it's easier for me to read. It's easier for me to get lost in original fiction because I have to learn each character from scratch, I suppose. I prefer to only have to 'learn' a few characters' (if any's) background.

I love both. Fanfiction is great to read and write because no one will ridicule me for putting my fantasies onto paper. But with original fiction my mind blows to pieces with all the lack of boundaries. That's what I like most about fanfiction, there are boundaries. With original fiction, there are so many loopholes and I'm such a perfectionist but I still love to write it.

I think that plotlines are used over and over again for both genres but a recycled plotline doesn't mean that a story is going to be bad because it's the writer's interpretation that will make it unique or cliche.

Personally, I prefer original fiction. It's not that I think original fiction is better, I just get sick of reading fan-fiction. I've read a few good fanfics, but most of them are all the same. I also find that original fiction is usually written better.

Fan-fiction usually has the same general plot in which two guys from a band are in love with each other and are having crazy sex every three seconds. When I occasionally find fan-fiction that's not like that, I'll read it. It also gets old to read about a girl who is suicidal and an alcoholic and a smoker and then she meets MCR or some other band and they take her on tour with them and they save her life.

So, I like original fiction because it's usually got a more appealing storyline for me.

^ Yeah, a lot of fanfics are generally the same.
The other reason I prefer original fictions is because I love to see how authors create a character. Reading about people who are known is a little hard, because once the author starts putting in their own facts I tend to think, "That's wrong..."
But with original fictions, I can't say that. It's their character. They own everything about them - even their names.

That's also why I only write original fictions. I tend to think the, "that's wrong" thing if I write fanfictions. I always want to get facts right - that's why I do research on settings and eras, too.

I feel that same. I have only two fan fics stories because I just wanted to do it, not because everyone does it, but I felt I should try it. I love original fictions more then anything. That's what I write and will always because my message come out better when I write original fiction.

I love fanstay things so it wouldn't sound right if I did that in a fan fic.

Fan-Fiction is kind of a guilty pleasure for me. I would never write it because I kind of see that as an invasion of privacy. I know hypocritical, but I can't help it!
The only problem with fan fics is that a lot of authors see it as a shortcut through character develpoment which in my opinion is the best part of writing so why would you want to skip it? I don't mean all because some of the best stories I've read on here are fanfics but I've seen many many authors make assumptions that we alreasy know the characters and where's the fun in that?

Personally, I love both. But, at least here on Mibba, I'm much more into fanfiction. Mainly because there are more of them, and because I can get original fiction from published books.

I agree that, sometimes, writing fanfiction is easier for some authors because they don't have to create characters of their own. In some unfortunate cases, they don't bother with a real plot either. So, of course, there are a lot of clichés and overused ideas. But there are a couple of very talented authors who only take famous names and known faces, and the rest is up to them.

Honestly, to me, the fanfics I read and write are original fictions with names I'm familiar with. There has to be character development (which I prefer to be done throughout the story and focused on personality, not looks; original fiction can also be like that. I don't see the point in describing someone's appearance in an entire page, because every reader will end up with a different image of the character in their minds, either way), a plot, and the little mind-blowing details that attract me to reading in the first place.

I must admit, I considered fanfiction a guilty pleasure before, but not now. Basically because I'm not reading nor writing about the people themselves, but of characters who share their names.

And those stories usually suck. Any good story, OF or FF, needs character development.
