- Piccolo the Great:
- Dude, prostitution is totally and completely immoral.
This from a Christian standpoint, of course, but...
You know, I'm actually shocked by the responses to this thread. I thought for sure that people would think this to be a negative. Of course it shouldn't be legal.
Morals have nothing to do with the legality of anything, at least they shouldn't.No two people have the same morals, and if all laws were based on morals, there would be tons of miserable people in the world. Just look at countries where religion does dictate the legality of actions.
I'm opposed to prostitution, but it has nothing to do with any morals. What other people choose to do with themselves sexually is their business and not mine. However, when "their business" creates an industry that is harming innocent people, they no longer have the right to do so.
First off, I'll be the first to say that there probably are
some prostitutes who do so by choice; they're in the minority. A very small minority. Most prostitutes don't enjoy their job, and they're only involved in it because they're been economically manipulated into it. They feel like they have no other options. Not to mention that prostitutes often develop psychological disorders and have very low self esteem.
Aside from that, prostitution being legalized would open up a whole new world for human traffickers. People who buy and sell people like they're some sort of useless object. Particularly young girls and women are enticed with high paying jobs and phony education offers in poor regions, when really they're being sold into a sex trafficking industry where they'll be controlled by fear. in 2003 a world wide study found that over 800,000 thousand girls are abused in this industry, and the numbers are rising. This is basically 21st century slave trade.
By making prostitution legal, it would only make this industry easier to conduct. As of now, what they're doing has no legal loop holes. There is no documents you can forge saying it's ok for this person to have sex for money, but if prostitution were made legal on a large scale it would become
so easy. Police and law officers wouldn't be able to help these people to the extent they can now, and even now it's not easy.
