Do you think prostitution should be legal? Illegal? Is it moral? Immoral?

I don't see anything immoral in prostitution if it's an adult prostitute having sex with adults. Child pros, of course I disagree with.

I think it should be legal. It would decrease the need for pimps and hopefully protect the prostitutes.

    Thoughts?

Oh, yes, it should definitely be legal.
It would be very helpful for the prostitutes in the first place who now deal with risks of venerial diseases, abuse from pimps, abuse from clients and so on.
I don't see very much immorality in it, I mean it's consensual.
If we go a bit down the hypocritical road, it's a service, such as catering or waitressing. You pay for what you get. To think of, it's not even hypocritical to think of it as of a service.

I agree. It should be legalised BUT if it were to be legalised in say, England, that would lead to pimps legally bringing prostitutes in from all over the European Union without any questions.

If it were to happen in only some countries, it could cause huge problems and some countries believe prostitution is immoral.

Dude, prostitution is totally and completely immoral.
This from a Christian standpoint, of course, but...

You know, I'm actually shocked by the responses to this thread. I thought for sure that people would think this to be a negative. Of course it shouldn't be legal.

Morals have nothing to do with the legality of anything, at least they shouldn't.No two people have the same morals, and if all laws were based on morals, there would be tons of miserable people in the world. Just look at countries where religion does dictate the legality of actions.

I'm opposed to prostitution, but it has nothing to do with any morals. What other people choose to do with themselves sexually is their business and not mine. However, when "their business" creates an industry that is harming innocent people, they no longer have the right to do so.

First off, I'll be the first to say that there probably are some prostitutes who do so by choice; they're in the minority. A very small minority. Most prostitutes don't enjoy their job, and they're only involved in it because they're been economically manipulated into it. They feel like they have no other options. Not to mention that prostitutes often develop psychological disorders and have very low self esteem.

Aside from that, prostitution being legalized would open up a whole new world for human traffickers. People who buy and sell people like they're some sort of useless object. Particularly young girls and women are enticed with high paying jobs and phony education offers in poor regions, when really they're being sold into a sex trafficking industry where they'll be controlled by fear. in 2003 a world wide study found that over 800,000 thousand girls are abused in this industry, and the numbers are rising. This is basically 21st century slave trade.

By making prostitution legal, it would only make this industry easier to conduct. As of now, what they're doing has no legal loop holes. There is no documents you can forge saying it's ok for this person to have sex for money, but if prostitution were made legal on a large scale it would become so easy. Police and law officers wouldn't be able to help these people to the extent they can now, and even now it's not easy.

My mother and I discussed prostitution yesterday as a job, plain and simple. If you choose to sell sex, I see no problem with it. You have the opportunity to give it away, why not make money off of it?

Because your making money off of it is harming other people. It's just like drugs. If people choose to do drugs, it should be their own choice but it isn't that simple. Their choice to do drugs fuels drug related crimes and harms other people. Prostitution is the same way with human trafficking.

Maybe I should clarify. We were discussing my being a prostitute. Nothing to do with human trafficking.

It has everything to do with human trafficking. One person affects many in that industry. I just explained myself a few posts above this.

I don't think the matter of legalisation is about morality or immorality. It's about making things safer. They do it, but at least they're not abused(no matter how big their sin is, religiously speaking, they are still humans). They're not abused, they don't spread the diseases, that we all know, they sometimes do now. It's all for the best if it becomes legal. Everywhere possible. That's what I think and you're obviously allowed to think whatever you may want.

Is there no end to what people think should be legal? Seriously, there has to be some boundaries.

Not only do I agree with the morals part of this, and the person who posted the part about human trafficking, but also, it would spread STD's even worse than they already are.

Like we need more of that.

Actually, if it were legalized there would be health codes and it would lower the spread of STDs.

I really don't think it should be legal.

An how are they honestly going to figure out who has an STD and who doesn't. They aren't going to be able to get tested after each trick. It would take forever just to find out that they have one and them ten other people already have it.

Exactly, because they would have to get tested 10 times daily, unless the person they slept with had proof they didn't have anything. People who pay for that kind of stuff aren't the most honest, and a lot would probably lie.

On top of that, it would probably promote infidelity. I mean, if people didn't have to worry about getting arrested for it, there's a lot less chance they'd get caught, and therefore, a lot less chance their spouses would find out.

(I could be wrong) Isn't Prostitution legal in Japan? They have to be checked for STD's and such every so often and they have to use protection/precautions. I thought I read somewhere that it was allowed over there.

If we had something like that, here, and it was monitored and made sure the spread of STD's didn't get worse, then I don't see the problem. Of course only consenting adults. No children.

If this was legalized, I would hope that it would eliminate pimps and the clients and such getting abused, traded and all that other horrible stuff.

I say that it should be legal, but that doesn't mean I totally agree with it. I'm not sure where I stand. I can't understand why someone would want to sell their body or do some of the stuff that they do, but it's kinda like the fight with abortion, almost.

It's their body, so shouldn't they be allowed to do with it what they want? Like making these types of decisions?

I think as long as they get tested regularly for AIDs/HIV/STIs I don't really see a problem with it. I never would engage in that myself but it's not really up to me what everyone else does.

^ I agree with both of you.

I honestly don't think it should be legal even though it is "the oldest job". People have the option to please themselves. They don't need someone else to do it for them. Sex in my opinion is something shared between to people who have great feelings for eachother. I'm not by any means waiting until mairrage but I do believe casual sex is emotionally straining. The people who would be prostitutes in this situation would have to do with the emotional effects of it even if the health effects are being monitored.
I honestly don't see the point to prostitution. If you have someone, you should be with them. If you're alone and looking for a sexual fix, you completely have the ability to deal with that yourself.
