What do you think of sex in stories?

I really don't think people need to detail it as much as they do. I mean some are okay like when they hint it, but you don't need stuff like, "He took off his clothes and touched this part of the girls body and she moaned with pleasure." That is basically sex typing! Stuff like that isn't in a lot of stories that are actually published (unless your reading a "MA" or "Adult" books, you know the the stuff people Master**** over). Same with characters touching themselves in stories on Mibba! Why does it have to be perverted. If people are doing this and it's really important in your story, just hint...don't explain every little detail of the event. Details are only needed for something important. "The little blond girl was happy and joyful, as she skipped down the yellow brick road." Ect.

I don't understand why people's stories get blocked for having one mistake, but not for having a lot of sex typing in their stories.

it's also sometimes important to explore sexual tension and exploration in your character. sex scenes aren't all about just getting fucked. they can immensely help develop your character.we're all really horny anyway

it's also entertaining. it's hot. it's fun to read [and to write]. it's also interesting. everyone* wants to know about other people's sex lives, everyone* wants to compare what they do with what everyone else is doing. so everyone* likes to read about it.

you can pick up loads of interesting kinks from reading stories. [that's a link to a fic containing graphich description of genital piercings, masturbation and and a cool little kink called sounding, btw]

no one's making you read graphic stories. they should all be rated accordingly and given warnings where appropriate. no one's holding your face against the computer and forcing you to read it. if you don't like it, click out. simple.

also: stories are about relationships. interactions between characters, or between a character and the world they're in.

authors strive to make their stories as full and realistic as possible. newsflash: real people have sex. they do, trust me, they really do.

and if it's important to have fine detail about skipping down a road, then surely something as huge as the physical cementing of a relationship between two characters deserves a little time?

yeah, maybe it's a little tacky to write it all out in all its techinicolour, Dolby-enhanced surround-sound glory - but fuck it, if it's done well, it's entertaining.

if you want high literature, go read the Classics.
if you want some cheap entertainment, you're in the right place.

Explicit sex scenes can show so much depth and emotion in a character. Scenes like that can tell a whole story and show so much that you couldn't get any other way. I love writing sex scenes that tell stories.

Sex is such a beautiful thing and it can be explored so deeply. On the other hand, it can be a very dark thing that can show us the darkness in the human mind.

I don't write sex scenes myself, but a lot of character development needs sex. I read Anne Rice and she has some explict sex scenes in her books but they make you understand the love between the characters. And you learn more about the character.

I don't mind sex scenes, if done properly. Nothing technical, but when the mood is right and two people are in that point in their relationship then, well, it would seem rather immature to not put sex in. But, random sex does tend to get a bit old; it all depends on the story and the way written, at least for me. I do very much enjoy realistic fiction and I think that a couple having sex is very real and can be beautiful.

I guess that's why I'm not the hugest fan of PWP.

I don't like writing sex scenes cause it scares me. XD I always think I do a bad job, so unless the character is freely okay with a sex scene, I won't write it. I will, however, read stories just based about sex because I am horny and like to get off. I admit it.

Because it is against the writing guidelines to use improper grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. It is not against the writing guidelines to write a sex scene. It is completely acceptable as long as it is labeled with the appropriate rating [NC-17]. If you don't want to read those stories, then read things that are an R rating or lower. No one is forcing you to read the sex scenes that we are completely allowed to write.

I agree with the others. There's a rating system for a reason and honestly, I like reading it. When written well, it's very good. I don't personally write them, because I haven't experienced it and don't want to mess it up, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

And yeah, sex can show a lot about a character...

You know there are plenty of books published in the 1900s and interbellum years that were well pretty sexual. But certainly in most of the books I've read the author was skillful enough not to write "He took off his clothes and touched this part of the girls body and she moaned with pleasure."
Nowadays, the postmodernist trend is pretty sexual too. I don't think I have ever read a single postmodern book that doesn't have some slightly sexual chapters/passages. Sex is everywhere in published books, well good serious published books. Most postmodernist authors don't expect kids to read their stories/books.

However, I don't believe in selling a story/book, so I don't believe in putting sex there just so you'll gain an other fan. I believe in sex as an expression of love and that's why I'd put it in a story. Making it over-the-top explicit though, kindof ruins the whole gentle hymn about primordial love[/]. There are stories that only work because they're sexual, I've recently read Mantissa by Fawles and it was a lot more explicit than most stories on this site but it was made the story work like magic, what made it funny and enjoyable.

Also I don't think there are things that shouldn't be in stories. If we've invented words for them, they should be in stories/books, the era of censure has hopefully ended .

Sex is natural in every day life, so why should we have to stop authors writing it? My opinion anyway. It's like telling someone not to write about love...and characters would be so dull without love.

Personally, I'm not comfortable with writing sex. But others are more than welcome to do it.

Freedom of expression is a pretty simple concept, and the rules we have for the protection of people who might be affected by some content are here for a reason - I'm talking about rating of stories. People are free to write whatever they want - but they have no guarantee that they will be appreciated for it. Nevertheless, they wrote it and that cannot be taken away from them.

I'm not a very sexually graphic writer myself, but I hint at it and even descibe it reasonably much(for example, in Kiss Me Hard; Damn You!, the main character is a prostitute). You try writing something about a prostitute and not write about sex. Gestures, words, actions during the intercourse sometimes perfectly define a character.
I'm not saying I completely disagree with your point of view about this, because I do agree that some stuff are way too descriptive out there.

I'm not one to pass up a well-written PWP either but I tend to like romance. The idea of pure, innocent love. Of course, it's inevitable that that love will turn into something more and lead into sex.

I've written explicit sex scenes before and might I say that it's one of the hardest things I've ever had to write. I definitely commend the people that can do it and do it well. Explicit sex does not mean bad literature, to the contrary, in a lot of series the explicit scenes commend a characters personality, sometimes showing inner turmoil and drama.

If it's a poorly written, explicit scene than I wouldn't read it. I'd say that kind can be gone. Just don't confuse explicit sex with horrid grammar. :mrgreen:

One of my favorite Ryden stories ever has very explicit sex. And not just explicit sexual scenes, but extreme explicit sexual scenes. It's still an absolutely beautiful piece of work.

I agree 100%. Sex is a good way to show every hidden thought and emotion in a character.
