I'm for the legalization of marijuana. I've been for the legalization since before I even tried it [which I have done once]. I don't think the health effects are serious enough for this drug to be illegal, although I think it should be controlled in much the same way alcohol is. I think it should be legal to smoke it at 21 and you should not be able to drive while under the influence.

    Thoughts?

I agree. Pot should be legalized, its not extremely harmful compared to some of the harder stuff, and when it is illegal it makes people want it more, when was the law making it illegal passed anyways?

It was made illegal in most part of the world in the 20th century. The first law about marijuana made in the US was in... Virginia, I believe... and it was ordering the people to grow it because hemp made really good ropes.

Same. If you give people one drug they can do legally, they're less likely to do others
I don't think thats true. The illegal part is what makes drugs tempting, making something minor like pot legal isn't going to make things like cocaine seem any less interesting or tempting. The drug industry is a big industry and marijuana is only a very small part of it.

Anyways, I say legalize it. Tax the hell out of it. People do it, legal or not. At least this way we'd be making money off of it instead of losing money fighting the inevitable.

I think it should be legal.
For one, if it weren't illegal, the wish of smoking pot would be lower, because the whole "doing the bad thing", the whole rebel shit, would be gone.
For two, there would be taxes for the sale of it, so we would al have to gain. Well not myself, I don't live in America or whatever, but the people in general. Right now dealers make money without paying any taxes and the underground economy is super-high.

    Make it legal!:D

I'm quite certain if marijuana is legalized that people will do it underage. I have friends that do it under the age of 21. And, like I said, I've tried it and I'm not 21. And I wouldn't have waited either. I drink underage. I'd smoke weed underage. But I think the limitations should be there. I would take full responsibility for my actions if I were caught breaking the law. I knew the risk and I took it.

Alcohol and cigarettes are worse for you than marijuana and that's why I think it should be legalized.

Oh here the law is horrible because you can't grow poppies or cannabis without huge paperwork. We actually have traditional cookies that contain cannabis and wild plants grow everywhere. [Actually we are theoretically the first men to use cannabis, the oldest seeds were found here.]

I don't think we should encourage drug use though. And marijuana contains almost 40% more toxic substances than tobacco smoke and also increases the risk of developing psychosis with 40% compared to non-users.

Marijuana, from all I have heard and read, is not physically addictive. But, even if it is and I have been misinformed, it should still be legalized. People should be able to do to their own bodies whatever they wish, as long as it does not harm others. (And I do not count second-hand smoke as harming others because everyone technically contributes to air pollution.) I agree with whomever said tax the hell out of legalized marijuana, though. I love taxes on that kind of thing, despite my reasoning for wanting to legalize being my libertarian sympathies.

    Marijuana is extremely toxic.
It effects many, many parts of a person's life, including the ability to memorize and learn. It offers distorted perception, trouble with problem-solving, loss of motor coordination, and even an increased heart rate. And all this from short-term use.
Pot has the same amount of--or in some cases, more--harmful cancer-causing chemicals than tobacco. These chemicals also work nicely in destroying your immune system.
And yes, marijuana is an addictive drug.

Not to mention all of the emotional side-effects experienced by not only the user, but the user's family.

It most certainly should not be legalized. It's a health hazard, and we should do our best to keep each other good and healthy.

If it's for religious reasons, then sure. Other than that, I have an extremely firm belief that it should not be legalized. Drugs ruined my best friend's life, and making it legal is like saying "Okay, kids, have at it."

There is no way other than religious reasons that it should be legal.

I know someone who has been doing marijuana for a long, long time and has a great career, a great family, is very intelligent. Marijuana hasn't harmed this person at all.

And there are smokers who don't get lung cancer.
But that doesn't reduce the risk for other smokers, sometimes it's just a matter of chance.

    Hm...
    Well, maybe she got lucky.
I know someone that all their life, since he was 'bout sixteen, and now, he's 41, and still doing it, even if he has children, a wife, and a job. So one day, he decides to go to college to complete his dream job. Half way through, he meets the worse crowd on earth; and ends up cheating on his wife. The mother tells her daughter later on, and her daughter is traumatized.
    I remember her saying;
"No! It can't fucking be! My dad- no... no...." She would scream.
And she found out that her whole life, he had been a drinker, too.
And now, she's as screwed up as her Father, and the Mother doesn't have a fucking clue.
And that man, is my Father. And I am against legalizing marijuana.

Worst crowd on earth sounds like the people he was hanging with were the problem, not the fact that he was toking up.

The Drug Awareness Warning Network Annual Report, published by the US federal government contains a statistical compilation of all drug deaths which occur in the United States. According to this report, there has never been a death recorded from the use of marijuana by natural causes.

In 2006, over 5 million people around the world died from tobacco products.

Alcohol abuse kills some 75,000 Americans each year.
