I illegally download all of my music, and if it's an album I really love or grow to love, I'll buy it in the shops. I prefer to spend the little money I do have on concert tickets and merch, of which a higher percentage of the money gets back to the artist anyway.

Say what you will about legality or illegality, Torrents and P2P sharing is the most efficient form of self-promotion for artists.

It's a form of expression, music is. Artists ought to be less concerned with the revenue ad more about the exposure, considering that lots of their record sales don't even go to them anyways. I'll go to a concert of theirs if I like them enough.

    Random thought.

I hate buying CDs now. Because of the quality. I pretty much have to break the case to get it open, that cracks in a week from minimal usage, and the disk is shit quality. They do not make things the way they used to. In that case, I'd rather download it to a burnt CD so if I scratch it, I'm not out 15 bucks.

The last CD I bought, I swore I wouldn't buy another one 'cause I'm sick of it.

    @ dru's hammer.

That's one of the main reasons I rarely buy CD's. I hate the way CD cases are. They should invent something new. They're just helping illegal downloading by pushing people away from buying CDs.

People have been pushed away from CDs because of MP3 players and iPods. Downloading music online is fine if you don't like CDs, but it's quite a stretch to say that's a legitimate reason to steal music, as opposed to pay for it through the numerous legal downloading sites.

I like CDs. My mom's car only has a CD player and when I lived at home, I listened to them religiously. I still burn about 1-2 a week. I used to have a lot of actual CDs I purchased but they all kept getting scratched almost immediately and since I had the music on iTunes, I would burn a new copy, but why buy the fucking CD if it's just going to break in a week? I wouldn't buy a pair of shoes I knew would fall apart in a week.

As to purchasing it through iTunes or something, you're right, i could. I guess I just don't see the point in spending the same amount of money and not having the thing I want, which is the CD. I'd rather download the album and use the same amount of money to buy a band shirt.

I probably shouldn't have added the word 'illegal' in the last sentence. I meant just downloading in general, not particularly illegal.

About 75% of my music is downloaded, and about 75% of that percentage is illegally downloaded. I actually love CDs and I do own several hundred of them that I've collected over the years, but most of the time I just can't afford to buy CDs.

I do buy CDs when I can afford them though, especially if it's by an artist I really love/respect, and luckily I live in an area with a ton of those little hipster record stores where you can find CDs and vinyls for mad cheap. But yeah, the majority of my music is downloaded, both legally and illegally, and I see no problem with it.

I honestly don't feel that bad about downloading songs off the internet illegally. If people are doing that, the bands should really think, 'Well, are they really doing this to spite us or can it benefit us?' It tends to be the second phrase. While I think that it's wrong to steal, the bands / law should think about how this benefits them. (Same goes for the song names; it's bound to happen.) Also, there's seven billion people on this earth. How do you honestly plan to stop it, restrict the internet?

I think that's a really weak argument; it's like saying, 'There's seven billion people on earth, someone's bound to murder someone.' Just because it's easy/likely doesn't make it okay.

I don't think she was using it as an argument because she even said it's wrong to steal. I think she meant that since the internet has become so popular that it's not likely that illegal downloading will ever stop because there so many people.

Kind of like how marijuana is illegal but how many pot smokers do you know that haven't been convicted of possession. It's too hard to regulate completely, like illegal downloading.

She said stealing is wrong which is the point. Rather she feels bad about it or not is irrelevant.

That's quite true. You brought out the point I wanted to make. But, in all honesty, really, how would you stop something that is so universal? Restrict the internet like Egypt did to it's citizens? There would be riots about that. And what I feel when I steal is irrelevant, like Jewel said.

I buy legally if I can, but if it's something that I can't get off i-tunes, or even one of those songs that you can't get unless you buy the whole album, then I'll get it illegally.

I shell out extra money for CDs when I can. True love to me is buying a CD I already have downloaded.
& uh, CDs by my favorite Japanese band are extremely expensive & buying them secondhand doesn't do any good.
For those who believe that downloading music is immoral, how do you feel about buying used CDs or so much as letting someone borrow a CD? It's not like the artist is getting paid twice.

I used to feel that way until CDs started getting cheaper and cheaper and more and more shittily made. It's hard to buy one where the case doesn't break opening it and the CD doesn't scratch in a week. Sad

I will buy used, older CDs though. I bought 'From Under the Cork Tree', like three times from various second hand shops.

Oh god, I know right?! It's awful. Sad Especially the CDs that don't even come in the plastic cases.
