As to modern day 'real' vampires... it strikes me as a tad dangerous. The human mouth has a hell of a lot of bacteria in it - it's much safer to be bitten by a dog, there's something in their saliva that helps wounds heal. But don't quote me on that. I can't remember the exact terminology or how it works.
Also, most people can't digest human blood. Small quantities I think are okay, but larger ones just make us vomit. Or so the lady on TV said. And that'd be a really random thing to lie about.
Also, there have been horror stories of 'coven leaders' luring unwary fools into their 'covens' and then getting them hooked on drugs like heroin (because some people inject blood) without their knowledge. You can also get HIV and other diseases that way.
And the smell of blood makes me sick. That would be my first reason not for trying it really :-)
