Some say yes, some say no.
Some say that needs to be left to nature, some say to God.
I see the plus if you have a genetic disease that will be passed to a specific gender of child.
I see no problem with choosing the sex of your child.
I want two boys and two girls. If I can pick the gender, why not?

I think that science is amazing in what it can do.
If scientists can pull genetic/gender selections off with no harmful sideeffects/problems why shouldn't they?

I think this sort of thing may be abused in countries like China etc. where son's are desired more than daughters.

There are pros, I see it. In the fact that certain religions favour males to be born first. So it often leads to girls that are born first being shunned I suppose, and not treated correctly. Then again, if they're religious enough to stick to the old traditions, they would most certainly be against the idea.

That would probaly be the only reason that would make me consider it. Otherwise, I think I would end up feeling some guilt over it.

I think that science can now do some pretty darn awesome things.
But this isn't one of them.

I hate anything that has to do with scientifically altering a child like that.
They're even working on ways to design a kind of "ultimate child." Or a way for the parents to completely choose--from the gender to the height to the color of the kid's eyes--their ideal child.

No. This is almost insulting to God.
We have no right to tamper with things like this. It's a child for goodness sake. The symbol of innocence. Purity.
They should come as they are.

And how would you feel if you were that child who was scientifically formed/altered? Firstly, it would give your parents a very vain impression, and the kid would just constantly be concerned with the fact that his or her parents made sure that he/she was this way, not that.

    It's just a terrible thing all-around. No
    In my opinion.

Yeah, that's a good thing. Science has involved.

True, China would definitely abuse it - they'll choose boys more than girls.

I don't really agree with this. To each their own, but at the end of the day a couple should want a healthy child. They shouldnt care what it is. They should want it just the same.

It could just also just go completely wrong, some kid of 'natural balance' or whatever could be destroyed.
Eventually, one sex could wildly out number the other....

I agree. There are more females on the Earth, but still. It messes up balance, it messes up nature. We need to leave these things alone, because eventually something-- anything could go wrong, and we'd regret it.

How does picking the sex of your child make it...not innocent and pure? o_O

    I don't know, it's a tricky subject.

I think it's best not to mess with this kind of thing but I'm not firmly against it.
If this happens then won't there be a problem of having lots of a certain sex in some places and not enough in others etc?
In some countries girls are killed or disowned because families only want boys. If they were given the option of choosing then that country would have too many males and stuff like that.

I personally wouldn't choose the sex of my child, purely because I'm not too fussed [though I'd rather have a girl] but if I was dead set on having a boy/girl then I think maybe I would choose.
I don't think it's something we should invest a lot of many into taking further though.

While I'm not for this idea of choosing the sex of the baby the insulting to 'God' argument can be used in almost every situation. Supposedly God gave us these bodies but we cover them up with clothes. Couldn't that be considered to insulting to God?
Plus, why should those who don't believe in God not be allowed?

That happens anyway really. Loads of kids wonder 'what if I'd been a boy/girl?'

Why not let people decide? I say, there's no real harm in it. My mum really disagree's though.

I am totally for this. It would make families happier, knowing they have a child that they want. Buying presents for the baby shower and such would be much easier. Also, if the parents wanted a boy, but had a girl and discriminated the girl and abused her just because she wasn't what they wanted... Wouldn't that suck for her? I think there's no harm in this.

About altering the child's looks, I think that's amazing! I'm also for that. That'd be great to have the ultimate child/be the ultimate child.

I think that this would be great in a well-educated and intelligent community.

..Unfortunately, not the whole world is. :cute: I agree with the people above, this will be abused. If this is made legal and readily available, there will be more men than women in this world. Much, much more. There is still sexism in the world, and avoiding it isn't a real soloution.
If a family is going to discriminate their daughter, we have to solve that problem. We have to change their minds, not just allow them to pick to have a son instead, that's awful.

So, I agree to this, but only for medical purposes. I'm sure many people would love to be able to pick the sex of their child, but because it will be abused and used to discriminate against females (well, or males), I don't agree to it being available to just anyone.

(all this is assuming if science is able to pull this off, of course)

I don't really care about whether or not science is gonna choose the sex of my baby. I remember on an episode of Yes, Dear the wife really wanted a baby girl and they did something to the husbands sperm that made the chances more likely of having a girl.

I can see China abusing this, I've heard some stories though of a baby being born and when it wasn't the desired sex, the baby was killed. How often that happens, I can't tell you, but you can't tell me that it hasn't happened before. So maybe this could be a good thing. But I think that if you have a kid, it shouldn't matter the sex

Wouldn't it be a good thing then?
To keep unwanted girls from having to go through a terrible life or from being killed?

We discussed this in class once and my teacher said they weren't going to allow it to be used [unless for genetic disease purposes] on the firstborn child. [Granted, that was a few years ago when it was said, so it could be completely wrong now.]

Personally, I see the pros, but I do not want to do that.
I would want a boy more than a girl but I would love them equally no matter what.
