I've seen people talk about China...the only ones there that want boys are the poor ones who have to work for a living. They wouldn't have the money to even have this done, or at least thats what I've gathered.

Science and the human race are going to keep developing until we are destroyed or we destroy ourselves, and this is just a small step into the astounding future in which that is perfect people before our untimely obliteration.

I, personally, am for this. Even though a I can see quite a few risks and bad things that will come from it, this will eventually lead to greater medical and scientific discoveries.

For some of you who think this is playing god - you're very hypocritical. Heh, take for example that when a baby is born and it is going to die own its own if not treated - and a doctor saves it. Isn't that playing got right there? Your god obviously wanted it to die, right?

DNA manipulation to change the physical features of a person isn't a big deal either. If you're so righteous how can you refuse anyone the happiness of being beautiful and healthy? What wrong with that? Or are you just angered by the fact that you yourself can no longer be prettier than someone else? In a world where everyone is beautiful, personality and morals really come into play.

    Look at the bigger picture.

^ Yeah, China would like, completely just try to [okay, over-dramatisation] wipe out girls. If they can chose they'd most surely chose to have a boy, which would in the end completely screw up the whole entire society.

    :/ oh man.

Should it really matter if your baby turns out a boy or a girl?
You should love your baby anyways. I know its fun to fantasize about having two boys or two girls, but it doesn't seem right. Boy or girl, it shouldn't really matter. Either one is a blessing.

Okay, first, I'll just say I'm really against it.
I'd honestly, rather have a girl than a boy, but I'd never actually want to choose that, because then my whole life I'd just be going 'what if it was not a ___, like I chose?'
I think I'd feel really guilty about the whole thing.
Plus, I think it would make couples fight. I mean, say I want a girl, and my husband wants a boy, what do we do then? at least when it's just a chance thing, no ones blamed about the choices.

I don't think I have anything against it.
    Why shouldn't you be allowed?
If you don't want to choose or if it's causing conflict then don't choose. Take a chance.

It's amazing what they can do nowadays.
If people want a specific gender then why not?

I think that science can now do some pretty darn awesome things.
But this isn't one of them.

I hate anything that has to do with scientifically altering a child like that.
They're even working on ways to design a kind of "ultimate child." Or a way for the parents to completely choose--from the gender to the height to the color of the kid's eyes--their ideal child.

No. This is almost insulting to God.
We have no right to tamper with things like this. It's a child for goodness sake. The symbol of innocence. Purity.
They should come as they are.

And how would you feel if you were that child who was scientifically formed/altered? Firstly, it would give your parents a very vain impression, and the kid would just constantly be concerned with the fact that his or her parents made sure that he/she was this way, not that.

    It's just a terrible thing all-around. No
    In my opinion.
You've sort of changed my mind there, a little. I can see your point. Clap

I'm against that "ultimate child" thing, though.

I like the idea, right now, I want three boys when I have kids.
I just don't like girl children / teens.
I'd be pretty bummed if I had a girl.

If it were altering the child so it had the eye colour / heair colour / height you wanted, that would be going to far.

    But the gender is fine.

It's like, just doign those things what are supposed to make you have certain genders, like eating lots of cereal apparently increases the chance of a boy, I think.
    It's just quicker.

Why is one too far and not the other?

You can already try and control the sex of your child by eating certain foods and what not.
Medically changing it is just quicker and has a higher success rate.

Eating certain foods can't change the eye colour / hair colour / height. Those are more inheritance things. You can'tinherit your gender from your parents, as you have one of each, but you can inherit the other things.

Yeah. I think that changing the eye colour, hair colour and all that is too far, as well. But I don't mind the gender, either.

I do not agree with this at all. I understand why some would want to pick the gender of their child, but then where is the excitement of having a baby?
The excitement of seeing what they grow up to be, or what gender they are when you go through hours of labour? What on earth is the point if you cannot experience the true beauty of pregnancy?

It's hurtful to change a child. Wouldn't you wonder for years to come what they were meant to turn out like? I would, that's for sure.

    Accordring to this you can...

"If a girl is desired, calcium and magnesium should be high in the woman's diet, so milk should be drunk in quite large quantities, and salt and potassium-rich foods should be avoided. If a boy is desired sodium and potassium should be high, so salty foods should be eaten, and milk, and milk products, should be avoided. Women hoping for a girl should also avoid drinking tea, coffee and alcohol, while those hoping for a boy can enjoy these drinks at will."

I agree, but how does eating certain things help with a certain gender?

You should read the whole article...
There are a variety of 'non medical' methods that couples can use to try to affect the gender of their unborn child, and while there can be some quite persuasive anecdotal evidence, none has yet been proved in scientific studies to be able to influence the gender of a child, or are able to guarantee the outcome.

There isn't anything scientific to back up any theory like that, and you certainly cannot rely on them.

    British scientists say it might

And I said "you can already try", I didn't say it would always work.

But some people are wary of the stats, saying that a man's sperm ultimately decides whether a child will be male or female, and that diet has little or nothing to do with it.

Those are purely statistics, they didn't offer any logical reason as to why that happened or if the food was causing it, that was in invalid experiment with many variables. There are all kinds of myths and rumors as to things you can do during your pregnancy to effect the baby, but that has no scientific merit, so I don't think you can justify this procedure by saying it's something already being done when it isn't.

Yet again, I never said it would definitely work.

I said people try using those methods.

And I said I don't think its logical to use something you can "try" to do as reasoning behind supporting this. One is 100% effective, the other has no guaranteed success. They're not the same. :shifty
