Oh, my grandfather was a bad bad man. I don't believe in that idea of hell, but I'm totally fine with him thinking he went there.

I guess I was just making a point about the fear of hell.

I personally don't believe in the fire and brimstone hell. I think that earth is hell and I think bad people have to get reincarnated and go through the sins of their previous life. So, in my belief structure, you always have a chance at redemption.

Some people believe that you go to Hell for a certain amount of time and then you can go to Heaven.

I do not believe in heaven nor hell or reincarnation. I think when you die that you are dead. If you chose to be buried, you're in the ground, if you chose to be cremated you are ashes in a jar or the wind or spread wherever you wanted to be spread. Once you're dead then that's it.

I do find it pretty depressing but I think it is better than lying to myself.

I understand. I used to feel really uncomfortable with things in my faith and when I stopped believe what others said and what felt right for me, that made things better.

I just think it's unfortunate that you have to be depressed about your faith/lack thereof. I always think these things should lift you up, not bring you down.

(I'm the only believer in a family of Atheists/agnostics, but my mother believes in reincarnation.)

I figured I was already depressed why lie to myself about something that doesn't even make me feel better. It mainly just sucks when someone I know dies. I'd love to believe in a religion for it not to be so sad but it's like a gay man pretending to be straight so he can fit in, but he's not really straight so he's just lying to himself.

I don't find it depressing at all; I think it's strangely beautiful. It gives life a kind of finality - perhaps a catharsis - and at any rate an encouragement to live well while one can. I don't think I could deal with eternal life. If I knew that I were technically never going to die, I don't think I'd go about things with the same attitude I do currently; I think it'd be worse for me.

    @ Alex; periphery.
I don't think of it that way. I mean, this human life is the only human life you will ever have as this person. No reincarnation or afterlife can change who you are at this time. This is your life.

I don't believe in Heaven and Hell. When I was younger, I did believe in Heaven and Hell but as I got older and started looking into other religions, I found that I didn't actually believe in them. I was just believing what my family told me to believe. I guess I haven't really thought too much in-depth about my belief in the afterlife but I believe in reincarnation. I believe humans have souls and I believe that other animal species have souls as well. I believe in an 'alternate realm' I guess you could call it where souls are first punished for their misdeeds before being allowed to be reincarnated. I just believe that life is a cycle I suppose.

Reincarnation is something I believe in, too (among other things). My question is, do you think souls that are on Earth now only get reincarnated on earth, or do you think they can be reincarnated elsewhere in the universe?

And it's cool if you don't have an answer, too. Just interested!

I actually don't think I've ever really thought about it that way but now that you mention it, I think it could be possible for a soul to be reborn on a different planet/universe assuming there is more life out there. I don't know if I believe souls can 'jump' species or not (like a human soul can be reborn into a dog body and vice versa), that's something I've always kind of been confused with what I believe. But I do think that you can be reborn elsewhere if there is similar life in that place.

My boyfriend and I have entertained the thought that souls can graduate to a higher state of being. Maybe after you've been as enlightened as possible in one form you become a more advanced one? I don't really know. I just like to think about it.

I think that sounds like it could be really nice. The idea of graduating to a realm of gods or something similar sounds like a really good thing to believe in, though I don't really believe in it since I have trouble believing in a higher power of any kind.

"Higher state of being" to us just meant more knowledge of the universe, more awareness of your own being. Not so much god-like as enlightened.

I'm a Christian so yes, I believe that they are both real.
Heaven/Hell happens after you die God decides whether you enter heaven or hell.
I don't know where they are, and I don't want to know.

Some Christians don't believe in Hell. Just pointing out that being a Christian does not mean an inherent belief in Hell, especially as a place of eternal punishment.
