There is a story in the bible explaining the perfect thing.
It's about this party. A rich person is hosting it and all the people invited are wealthy and well dressed. A homeless, poor old man comes in and sees the host (God) he is speechless in front of him, due to his wealth.
So if we were like the old man and not perfect we would be speechless in front of God and his host.
Otherwise purgatory would just be a place where you are like, "Hm... I don't think I'm ready to go up heaven yet. Nah on second thought I am.'
That's what I think at least.
But as humans, we just can't be perfect. We are not perfect beings.
We can only be as what God wants us to be, you know? We can be the best that we can be.
I don't think that anyone could possibly be wholly prepared for meeting God. I can't even fathom how spectacularly scary that will be.
And I don't think that we get to decide when we're ready. That's God's call, I would believe. Since He makes the final Judgment and all.
I think that our souls are less scared than we are.

I think it exists. Heres a few thing I learned from my CL teacher the other day:

One, since God loves us, he gave us purgatory as a one last shot for redemption. Purgatory is mainly a place where in you can be sorry for your sins, therefore making you clean so you may enter Heaven.
Two, putgatory is only for the people who have truly been nice here on earth. Or maybe also the ones who have been not so nice, but are truly and deeply sorry for their sins.
Three, you don't wait there until Judgement Day. You stay there until you are fully sorry for the wrong that you have committed whilst still existing on Earth.

Correct me if im wrong at any point :)

Didn't the Pope abolish Purgatory... or am I thinking of Limbo?

I'm Lutheran so I've kind of only heard of it. Actually I didn't know what it was until you explained it. I'm reading The Da Vinci Code and it says something about purgatory in it. But this guy was actually IN purgatory and then he isn't. I think that's how it was. So I'm a little confused.

We only get one shot. If we screw up or leave salvation for another day, it may not be there for us. We never know when God is coming back, therefore, if we screw up our one shot, we're not gonna make it. Yes, He does love us, that's why He gives us so many chances/opportunities here on earth.
Pergatory, as I have heard it defined many times, is a place in between life and death, where you can work off your sin, ultimately earning your place in Heaven. But once your life is through, there is no second chance.

I think purgatory is a nice idea, but I'm not sure how much I believe in it. To be honest I haven't really thought on it much, but doesn't it sort of contradict the idea of being saved by Jesus in your life..?

But it does actually raise an interesting question (one I've actually been wanting to know the answer to for quite a while): where do our souls go when we wait to be judged?

Or do we just get judged straight away..? Or do we linger on Earth? [/isconfused]

I'd really appreciate an answer, if anyone has one. :tehe:

^ From what I understand, once you die, you go straight to judgment.

^ Yes, and you are judged in purgatory.
At least, that was what my teacher told me. :)

^^ Oh, right. The being judged in purgatory thing makes a lot of sense! :tehe: I mean...it's not like you can be judged on heaven/hell/earth...

I was just confused because I'd heard something about when Jesus comes again, everyone who died is resurrected and judged.

^ When he comes again, its only the people who are still alive who are judged right there and then. The dead are just in purgatory being cleansed to be fitted into heaven.

    {hey, I actually learned something in that class :XD}

You can shave years off your purgatory time by following the Pope on twitter!

    ...I just can't even. Can't even! Facepalm

If perchance it is real I'd have no issue with chilling there for all eternity. Loads of folks to chat with, mood lighting, infinity to wander. My place.
