I like extremely few bands of the mainstream, the 2000's, whatever you want to call it.

I'm a ridiculously massive fan of AC/DC, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Guns n' Roses, The Sex Pistols...all the bands that shaped rock n' roll.

I really hate it when people go, "OMG Gerard Way is the best singer in the history of forever!"

What about the late and great Freddie Mercury? Robert Plant, the lead singer of Led Zeppelin, had a beautiful voice. Axl Rose, Brian Johnson, James Hetfield...they've all been around for years and are still able to perform like they're 21.

Although almost all of the music today isn't my thing, I always feel left out because everyone knows about "new" bands and don't like my taste because they're "old".

I think most of the bands today sound like each other...it just doesn't appeal to me at all.

I like a lot of old bands/musicians, but I also love a lot of new ones too. I think there are too many people who just ignore older bands because they're not around anymore or because they're not 'hot'. I mean, I'll totally admit to going completely fangirl over Frank Iero, but not to the point where I ignore other good music because of it. Some people just need perspective.

I think its a teeny bit unfair to say that everyone ignores older artists. It almost seems to me like there is a new trend these days of liking classic bands or artists like Queen or The Beatles or Bob Dylan. And I won't sit here and say I don't listen to them, because they were and still are very good... I still go into a sort of impenetrable daze when I listen to Led Zeppelin cover Muddy Waters' You Shook Me.

I just think when people say all the bands these days sound the same, they aren't digging deep enough. Maybe if your turn on a modern rock station a lot of it sounds similar, but if I am being honest, when I turn on a classic rock radio station, a lot of it sounds the same too.

Sure, Fiest and Regina Spektor and Yael Naim all have really similar sounds, but thats not to say they aren't all great artists. There are SO many amazing and current artists out right now, it just takes a little bit more effort to find them in these days of myspace and such.

There have been a bizmillion bands surfacing in the last few years that are so talented and deserve as much respect as any classic artist. A few of my favourites: Matt Costa, City & Colour, The 88, Jamie Lidell, Bedouin Soundclash, Adele, Kate Nash, Duffy, Holy Fuck...

Scrape away all the overprocessed mainstream musical waste and look at the more independent scene or dive into the local scene. There are amazing things happening and I promise you, it will restore your faith in new music.

Dont get me wrong here but I do admit when you say things like all the new bands sound the same. you can honestly look as deep as you want but some of them do sound alot alike if you think about it, im not saying all of them but most of them do because they listen to all of the old rock bands like queen and led zepplin david bowie and so on, but heres the thing though they like the calssics so much that they wanna be just like them and thats the road they travel. Then you have the bands that wanna take it a step further and make the sound there own and they do they really do. Rock bans have really been evolving as far as Im concerned they have definetly been doing there HW in finding out who they are and being able to create new sound.

I actually really hate when people do remakes of Queens songs.
Every time I hear one, I feel like they are destroying another classic.

I feel left out too. I don't know 80% of the bands that kids listen to.
And I don't mind the newer music, I don't care that people idolize these new people, but it bothers me when these kids have the guts to pick on these old bands, like Metallica and Guns'n'Roses. And to pick on them for the worst reasons, for that matter, is even worse. I just get mad. Metallica has existed and still does exist in a wonderful manner, for 27 years! The Rolling Stones... Led Zep... Queen... The Cure... these bands are the royalty, the gods of rock music, and never in a million years will a band like My Chemical Romance get near such greatness. I'm sorry, but that's the blatant truth.

Agreeing with you in a major way. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of the new bands that are out there but I would never have the guts to say that they are better than Metallica you have got to be kidding me, or the cure for that matter thats thats why classic rock is classic rock. you know what I mean.

    Gack, I know.
McFly did a cover of "Don't Stop Me Now". It was.... ugh. No
    Barf.
And MCR/The Used did "Under Pressure". It sounded like a freaking pop song. Double barf.
The only band that can do Queen songs is...
    -droll roll-
    Queen.

I am not a fan of today;s music what so ever. I flicked on the TV just this morning to see a music show on playing utter crap, some after song of rubbish, this may be harsh, but I don't understand how people can listen to all these mainstream bands and think they are any good. I don't hear or see the effort and work that goes into music from them, not one bit.

But then again, I was never into what was popular.

I listen to all sorts of music. The old rock, the new rock, classical, pop, punk, metal, country, dance, reggae, rhythm and blues, ska... the list goes on. I like today's music as much as I like yesterday's music. I listen to what's popular, I listen to what isn't popular. The reason a lot of new music sounds the same is because they have the same influences and they interpret their influences in the same way. I don't mind though, I like what the machine created.

Personally, I don't think there's any sense in completely canceling out the newer stuff. I mean you had to listen to Queen, The Beatles, and everyone else before you decided you liked their music, you had to give it a chance. So why not explore more? There is music worth listening to now, you just have to look for it. Even if that means watching countdowns (I avoid MTV) or switching to new radio stations.

I defiantly agree you cant say not to something untill you try it honesty I can understand that some people wouldnt like the newer stuff but atleast they listened to it before they said they dont like it.

I agree on the "give it a chance before you knock it."

I tried and failed, the radio goes on and once the music flicks on my irritation sky rockets. I flick the TV on and I feel the same.

I honestly listen to absolutely anything. I don't care who it's by, or how old or new it is, what genre its classified as; if I personally like it, then I will buy it, dance to it, whatever. I try not to judge as much as possible. It's just about the music.

I must admit there will be certain bands that don't appeal to me as whole, but I won't knock them for that. They might do one song that makes me think 'hey, you know what, I'd download that,' and I will, even if they're incredibly mainstream and sound like the next band on the radio.

I'm all for old bands and knowing your roots, but I think new bands should at least be given a chance. Some of the new stuff is completely repetitive, going in some direction where everything does sound the same. But despite that, some of it does sound good and catchy, you can't deny it. And some new bands are creating their own sounds, too. There is originality out there, you just have to look for it if you want it.
