I am a happy medium, besides avoiding most rap and country (not my cup of tea). I like stuff from the 80's and 70's, and even further back, but some of the newer stuff is okay. I think it's kind of stupid that, in my school, if a song is a few years old (like, from 2007, even. I like stuff from 2001. X3), no one likes it, just because it's old. I have friends from all walks of life, so I wind up listening to punk, metal, indie, pop, techno, and classical. Oh, and opera. I especially like songs in other languages- Rammstein is my /drug/.

I get sad thinking how music is not what it used to be in 70s and 80s. I watch all these movies and listen to all these stories from my mom and her friends and I find my self wishing I had been brought up in 80s, just so I could listen to 'devil's' music and sneak records around and know that I am 100% right for listening good music and my parents would forbid me to hang around 'the wrong crew' (that wouldn't really work since my mom threw her bra on Angus Young). These days all my mom tells me for listening some of these new bands is: "Sometimes it makes me sad that you listen to these things and it makes me even sadder because you, too, know that music can't get worse than that. But then the bad song ends and I see you jumping around and screaming with Steven Tyler and I'm happy again." And then I hug her and we blast 'Something's gotta give' and jump around and scream together.

I love pretty much all kinds of music in general, but I really kinda despise country and most rap/R&B/hip-hop. For me, my favorite band is My Chemical Romance, but from there, most of my top other favorite bands are those like Guns 'N' Roses, Led Zepplin, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Misty Edwards, Anti-Flag, Beastie Boys, Tupac Shakur, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Bouncing Souls, Green Day, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Misfits, Paramore, The Ramones, Van Halen, The Used..

I mean, it goes so much more in that. I LOVE older music, stuff that even dates back to the forties and fifties, all the way up to modern music. Just everything in between. I mean, there are some bands and music genres I'm really picky about, but hardly.

I like most music types too Cute
But particularly classical (gawd, I'm so sad aren't I?), baroque, and weird things like dark cabaret, electronica, gothic, experimental, psychobilly, blah blah blah. I like a few 'old' people as well like Queen, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, etc. I mean, just because something isn't new doesn't mean it's not good.

I love everything. Rap, country, rock, blues, jazz, classical, electronic, pop, R&B... all of it has it's place in my heart. XD

I've really been preferring jazz and blues and experimental 70's rock lately. tehe Tom Waits, Ray Charles, Fats Waller... they've all been getting heavy rotation. Jason Webley is an eclectic rocker I've been into lately too.

Justin Bieber gets his fair share of listening too. tehe But all in all, I prefer older stuff. And broadway/showtunes. And Big Band. Everything. XD

^^ Right there with ya. There's always a gem in even the most seemingly boring genres. Cute

Ska and folk-punk/alternative country, along with old OLD emo music is my favorite. They get me through the roughest of times. But the one thing I can't stand is most of the mainstream pop they play on the radio...most of it, anyways. With the exception of Jason Mraz, Sarah Bareilles and Colbie Caillat, I can't stand it. XD

With me, I do tend to listen to a lot of bands from the 80's more than any era. I always felt the 80's just had a feel-good vibe to a lot of the tunes that came out. The Cure, Blonde, Berlin, Depeche Mode, A-ha, A Flock Of Seagulls, ect. I mean, come on, they definitely brought New Wave into music if I'm not mistaken. Heck, to be honest, I love & adore A-ha, whom were considered a one hit wonder for their song "Take On Me" here in the states. But if it weren't for checking out more of their songs, I wouldn't have discovered that they had many songs that were just as good as "Take On Me", & I fell in love with them. So heck, I'm basically all about giving bands that were considered 'one hit wonders' chances.

I like stuff from all different eras though, including today. I'm a sucker for anything that catches my attention & I can get into, & not lose interest in listening to over & over. I dig some newer artists, but I try to listen to ones that aren't completely overrated & everywhere [minus Justin Bieber clearly, but I just love his music, & cannot deny that.]

I'm always willing to give newer artists a try, but half the time, it doesn't take long for them to annoy me, give or take a few.

On the subject of people covering Queen songs though, I've heard some covers that weren't that bad, but I'm sure people would disagree, & that's everyone elses' opinion. I stick to mine, & listen to what I want.

I listen to just about everything, with the exception of most Hip Hop, Country, and Bluegrass.

I'd say my favorite genres at the moment are Post Rock, Folk Rock, and Indie Rock.

I really do listen to everything, though. Don't believe me? Take a look at the song count in my library:

Oh, me too. I'm surprised my iPod hasn't exploded yet, what with all the songs on it. I listen to almost everything. I don't really like country, either. I like most Mainstream. I mean, music is music. Just because it's newer and not a classic rock band doesn't mean it's good, you know?

I know that feeling. I can't even fit a fourth of my collection onto my ipod now, damn thing's too small... apple needs to make terabyte ipods. THAT would really be awesome.

I don't listen to a lot of mainstream myself, but I do every now and then. I remember listening to Shinedown before I could hear their song "Second Chance" every day on the radio.

I have this inclination towards independent and underground bands, though. There's a lot of rare gems out there that I've only been able to find through scouring databases of bands. Thee Silver Mt. Zion is a perfect example of that... they're nothing short of musical genius, IMO, but I have yet to meet a single person that's heard of them. xD

I get what your saying though, it doesn't have to be classic rock to be good. It's all music.

I respect all music. Anyone who can play an instrament or sing a melody is talented in my eyes. I love all music. Lady GaGa, Motley Crue, Escape the Fate, Eminem, Journey, Madonna, you name it, I'll listen to it.

The government needs to put music back in schools. I don't know of a single school in my area that has music classes. Music is such a big part of society, and politics need to realize that.

I think some of it is just.... bad.

It's great, some of it is just amazing. And some of it is crap. Take Justin Beiber, I... I would really hate ot if that kind of music took over the world. Ohmylord...

Rock/metal's my thing, but I can't get enough of classical music sometimes, and despite it being incredibly famous still, I feel like it's awfully underrated, which is a shame. These composers pretty much shaped the way music has become, and some of them were just genius.

    .
    This this this this.

If somebody can sing incredibly well, or they have a voice that isn't even that big but is just so good, then I'm hooked. My music taste is so varied because hearing people singing is my favourite thing about it.

I listen to almost everything. I'm not going to say 'except rap and country' though. I don't listen to bands like All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, Youmeatsix etc. That's the kind I hate. I'm not huge on death metal but I don't mind listening to it.

I love the fact that I'm getting old enough to see the way music is progressing. I love the way rap/hip hop/r'n'b is fusing with other genres now. Obviously not everybody does it that well, but when people get it right it's fucking fantastic.

I totally understand what you are saying i dont listen to certin bands but if i hear about them i will give them a chance. Oh and yes music is definetly changing now a days, and i really liking that people arent limiting themselfs to one thing, you should always give it a chance before you say something bad about it.

I do listen to the old rock mostly and I do think that there will never be a band as good as Black Sabbath or AC/DC or Aerosmith, or even Kansas, but lately I have to agree that this new music is not all that bad. Things changed, sound changed, it's only natural for music in general to change a bit. But this whole 'fake' movement is starting to piss me off. I mean you surely can produce a sound without a computer. They did it 30 years ago, what is that you can't do it now too?
The only problem I have with this 'new era' of music are the labels. I mean, genres. The other day I found that My Chemical Romance is Mall Emo. What the hell is Mall Emo?! Is that Emo music you play in Malls? Apparently not, it's all that music you thing is Emo, but it's actually not. So... Why can't we call it... I don't know... Rock? Or something like that.
30 years ago there were 5 genres and they were doing just find. Now, there are at least 20 genres and to be honest... Nowadays... When someone asks me what genre of music I like the best, I'm not sure how to answer. I usually go with all of them, just to get them off my back.

Actually they number in the hundreds. Mainstream genres most people talk about though, yeah, 20 would be the proper for mainstream genres... er... if you exclude metal from the equation anyway.

Because genres like Slowcore, Post-Rock, No Wave, and Stoner Rock are not your everyday genres.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. You're right about the numbers, metal alone has minimum 20 sub-genres. It's getting ridiculous. Everyone got so caught up in labeling the music. It's not about bands anymore, it's about whether you're cool enough to know what post-ska-folk-new-rock-metal is?

Well the reason there are so many genres is because there are that many new bands, and that many sounds to go with them. Just calling everything "rock" stopped working decades ago, which is why there are so many genres today. If anything I'd say that is a good thing, that music is moving in so many directions and we're getting so many different sounds out of it. There's WAY more variety in music than there was 30 years ago, that's for sure.

I think it's just the critics and the music experts that get caught up in genres, though. The point they serve is to classify a band and fit it into a group. The whole purpose behind it is if you like this band, you'll probably like this band too. There are many bands that defy genre though, which is what the term "Experimental" or "Avant-Garde" is for.

Chances are you only know what post-ska-folk-new-rock-metal is, if you've heard a band with that particular sound. Which I haven't. xD

It's still about the bands, it's just that there are so many that it's simpler to list them by genre, but now even THAT is growing to terms that everyday people can't understand.
