I really like new bands, I won't deny that. I think some of 'em have great messages and the singers are all pretty good. Two of my favorite bands are My Chemical Romance and The Used, I think they're awesome. But, I mean, come on...can you really compare Gerard Way to Axl fucking Rose ? Or Robert Plant? That's just crazy. Newer bands are nowhere near as good as the classics; the guitarring in recent bands just drive me crazy...it's so boring. It's not even simplicity that's the issue, it's not like their songs are too simple. I mean, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana probably wrote the most simple (but still amazing) songs ever. I think newer bands just sorta...suck, a little bit. Most of them. I mean, a lot of lead singers are talented, but then what's the point of the band? The singers could just go solo.

Nevertheless, I think Avenged Sevenfold and My Chem (but especially A7x) have awesome guitar solos in some of their songs. And I think Bert McCracken from the Used is an amazing singer.

But you just can't compare any of them to the good ol' classics.

Clap I think I love you lol you hit the point dead on.
When it comes to older bands you most definetly can not compare them to the classics....................NO F-ing way. But alot of the newer bands are awesome my top faves are a7x, MCR, the used, and say anything, but when it comes down to the old stuff you cannot compare.

I'm the kind of person who listens to music across the board, be it punk, ska, hardcore, indie, pop, whatever. However, I would definitely say, without a doubt, that I prefer more contemporary artists, from the '90s on.

I just don't like most older music. Just like a lot of new stuff all sounds the same, old stuff all just blends together in my mind. To me, it doesn't stand out. I would much rather listen to a new, up-and-coming band that I could see live at a show than listen to men who are now older than my own father. Of course, there are exceptions, like I love Queen, but most "classic rock," I just don't care about.

I feel like now it's considered cooler to like older music. Like, "Oh, I listen to AC/DC. I'm more hardcore than you." But the fact is, music comes and goes, plain and simple. Music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s are all different within themselves, let alone the music of today. There are good and bad things about all of these decades.

The thing I like about today's music is that it's so accessible. Some people will disagree with me and say that that's exactly what destroying today's music, but I love the fact that I can go onto MySpace and hear people who could very well be the next big thing. I don't even have to listen to the radio or watch TV anymore to hear good music (which also takes away the way that music gets waaay overplayed). I have so many choices, which is great for my broad tastes in music.

I listen to a lot of music from all eras. I really don't think you can compare My Chemical Romance to, like, Queen or whatever - but that's not to say that they're both not really good bands. Y'know?

I agree. There are just some bands you can't compare with each other. They both have a lot of fame and good music, but I don't know. I don't feel right comparing Panic at the Disco with The Beatles.
    Come on, now.

I listen to basically everything. I don't prefer one generation to another. Music is something that changes constantly, and the only reason it seems like older music is better is because it's influential and has left a legacy. Music today will be older music to future generations. It's going to shape and change sounds and genres, just like giants such as The Beatles and Nirvana and Ray Charles. Progress is good. People might say that music is going to shit, but that's what they said in the 60s, and look what happened.

People need to stop putting category's on things and look at it for what it is. It doesn't matter how you dress and what you listen to I hate when people look at you and say "WOW She definetly listens to rap music" I hate that stereo type music is music if you like it then fine. I don't categorize myself in anyway cuz I do I listen to everything from oldies to the new bands that are out now. But I just thought that I would state that point.

I like old stuff like The Beatles and Queen and Aerosmith, but I like some newer stuff as well such as Mika and The White Stripes. I don't think you shouldn't listen to a band just because they're mainstream, you should give everything a chance.

I agree If I hear about something new I will go and find the band and listen before I say something.

Just mentioning a point here - a lot of older music is kinda mainstream.
Like The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin... I think you'd find most people know a Queen song. And that stuff was big back then and still is pretty popular - doesn't that make it even more mainstream?

So saying "I don't like mainstream music, I like the old stuff" is kind of... contradictory. In my opinion at least, and not directed towards anyone in particular. :cute:

Plus, mainstream bands usually get mainstream through talent. Like, as much as people can say that the music is awful and things like that, there has to be something there or the band wouldn't have so many fans.

Hell no, that does not make it main stream at all. You wanna know why most people know Queen songs its because there classic's. You cannot compair Queen to a mainstream band. NO! :x There is a huge difference! There is no comparison what so ever. QUEEN IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE A CLASSIC ROCK BAND, FOREVER AND ALWAYS!

The more newer bands that come out, the further 'back in time' I delve for music.

The only decent bands out now are Minus IQ and The Jonas Brothers.

Why is mainstream considered bad? Are people really so concerned with being "different"?

Exactly. If the music is good, and you like the music, then listen to it. It doesn't matter if it's popular or not. I don't see anything wrong with mainstream music. It gets out a lot easier, so it's easier to be exposed to it. Being 'different' shouldn't matter, although I see people thinking it's important all the time. Like what you like, and don't care what other people like or do not like.

I agree with u mainstream should not be considered bad, honestly no genre of music should be considered bad. Weather it's country, rock, rap, opera, classical, and so on you should not get ripped on just because you like certain types of music, ur you and no one can change that.

I don't like most of the intensely mainstream music these days but what I do listen to isn't unknown at all. I'm not trying to be "different" but when I hear the music that is getting the most coverage these days I'm extremely disappointed. A lot of what I hear on MTV is rappers singing about how rich they are or emasculated boy rock bands singing about girls, not to mention the celebrated female music artists these days are Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry. Most of the lyrics are completely empty and artists are more concerned about their image than their craft. This is really just an opinion and keep that in mind if you find yourself getting offended.

Yeah, I agree. A lot of what is mainstream isn't that good these days. I haven't actually listened to the radio or watched music channels in a good while. A lot of what's being played these days really disappoints me.
