Story Settings

  • Where do you set your stories?

Do you usually have them all in the same location or do you do research and expand the variety? How about not even specifically tell the location of the story, or not make it clear?
I'm used to the East coast, so mine are always set around Massachusetts, Maine, or New Hampshire, though I've looked up California and have written stories based on there.

  • Even though I only really write MCR stories, which should technically be set in New Jersey, I always set them in New York for some reason; specifically New York City. It shouldn't make much of a difference; they're right next to each other, and I know New York way better than I know New Jersey, since I've only been to NJ once, but New York, multiple times. The only exception I have now is a story I am soon posting up, which, although it is a Frerard, it isn't even set in America, it's set on a tropical island, and I think I'm choosing to make that island's exact location unknown (Like, it could be anywhere in the tropical south, but nowhere specific.)

And, even though I've never done this, if not in NYC, then I could probably get away with setting a story somewhere else in New England, like New Hampshire, Vermont, or Maine, since I live in VT and know NH and Maine pretty well.

  • A lot of my stories are based on Venice Beach (even though i don't live there) because i have this fanatical obsession with the place. xD. lately, though i've really gotten into Mahattan. Sometimes i base the story where the band i'm writing about lives. Jersey, Buffalo.

I have yet to actually base one in West Hollywood...

  • My original fiction is usually set in Canada, since that's where I'm from and I know the best. But my MCR fanfic is usually set in the US, just to be more accurate. If I don't know the layout, I google it. Like with my new story, Wanderers of Ruin, I'm following My Chem's 2008 spring tour exactly for the first part, just to make it more accurate.

  • I like to set mine where the band I'm writing about comes from.
So, like most of my My Chem. fics are set in New Jersey, except one, which is in New York,
and then my Ryan Ross fic is set in Summerlin, Las Vegas.

  • I set them where it's the most realistic. Like, where the band members are from.
All of my current stories are set in Las Vegas, since that's where the band I write about (Panic at the Disco) is from. Though in the beginning of my Ryden, they're in New York on touring business.
I usually don't think about the location, actually. It's not that important to me most of the time.

  • I'll set mine anywhere. Sometimes there's not really a specific place or its a made up town. I want to set one where I actually live and I want one in Washington state because I love it there.

  • When I used to write fanfiction - about two and a half years ago - they were either set in New Jersey (guess what fanfics I wrote) or Chicago since I live near it.

My first original fiction, The Blackest Years - which is now being reposted/rewritten as City of Lost Angels, seven months after being finished - is set in Los Angeles. It wouldn't have made sense for that story to be set in any other city. The plot wouldn't have worked out. Since I don't live in LA nor have ever been there I put a lot of research in it.

The World Set On Fire is set in London. Again, with the plot it wouldn't have worked out in another country - it could've been set in another English city, but I wanted it to be right in the middle of the action. I've never been there, so a lot of research has gone into it. I've been told I do a great job with researching.

I have two stories I'm working on that are set in Illinois. One I haven't picked the town yet (or if it's even going to be a real town) and the other is set in Downers Grove.

Generally, I'll have a plot then pick the location. Ususally the location has to fit the plot, and will play a big role in it. My one story that takes place in DG is set there beucase a) I wanted it close to Chicago and b) I live there, so I know all the places and don't have to think much.

My one-shots don't have a set location. There's no need.

  • Mine always end up in Texas. :/

Probably because a really fit guy is from Texas. :XD

  • Be My Bad Boy is set in Las Vegasish area.

Rainbow In The Dark is set just off the Vegas Strip. It's a strip c;ub. :tehe:

Strawberry Gashes is partly set in the ghetto of somewhere I made up, and partly set in a really nice neighborhood.

Somewhere In Between is set in Chicago.

  • I'm writing a Frank Iero fanfic, and he's an exchange student in Melbourne, Australia, because I know a lot about it, because I'm there a lot.
I love Melbourne, so I thought it would be a lot of fun. :cute:

  • Most stories of mine don't even have a specific setting. The last few one-shot's that I've written were set in Utah.
    September 13th, 2008 at 10:38pm
  • Most of them are set in NJ, as most of them are My Chem fanfics. But Love, Lacy is set in Little Rock, as it's Amy Lee-centric.
    September 14th, 2008 at 05:19am
  • I don't really say where they are, but they're all in Melbourne (except for I Don't Google My Own Name) because... I guess I just know what it's like 'cause I live there. -shrugs-

  • Eccentricity is set in Belleville, New Jersey, for obvious reasons. 101 Salter Place, to be exact. It generates a much different environment from Nara's home, which is in Australia.

Somber Resplendence is set in a poor suburb in New Zealand, where all the students and stuff live.

And Before the Dawn is set on the Gold Coast of Australia, so a lot of the action takes place on the beach, especially since Dawn lives there.

  • I usually set my stories in California or somewhere else beachy like the coastal region of South Carolina.
    September 16th, 2008 at 12:26pm
  • The setting for my stories are usually placed in my hometown (Reno, NV) because I know it very well. Also, I'm wayyyy too lazy to do research. :shifty I usually have the stories set somewhere in Nevada, or San Bernardino, CA since that's where I was born.

Though, I think one of my one-shots takes place in New Jersey, but it was fairly short, so I didn't need to do any type of research.

  • Mine are all New Jersey or New York, for obvious reasons. :file:
But I'm in the process of writing on one that will be set in California. I'm so excited for it. It's going to be nice to have that sort of change, and I know every detail about the place I'm making them live at so it's going to be a lot of fun.

  • I try to have mine set in the place the band is from/ living. Yes I write fan fic, only good thing I know how to do.
    September 17th, 2008 at 04:28pm
  • When I first started to write I set all my stories in Arizona, mostly in the Phoenix area because thats what I know best. In my newer stories there all over the place. In SHBD I set it in Augusta, Missouri. In my most recent story its based in the woods of Maine near the Canadian boarder. >.> I can't remember the town or county name.
