Since the majority of the occupants of this site are girls, I thought it would come in handy to have a thread made solely with the intent to make others look their best.
The Make Up
Now, if you want make up tips from another member, I suggest providing a picture of yourself(both without any make up, and with your normal make up.)
It is best for the person recommending the make up that would make you look beautiful if we could see your face (brush hair out of face, no goofy faces, can clearly see your face in the photo)
Now, since a lot of us on here like to overuse eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara. I decided to cover them in the first post.
Eyeshadow
MAKE IT NEUTERAL, LADIES! I cannot stress enough how important a nice brown, vanilla, mauve, soft beige or cream colored shadow is to your whole face. I bet a lot of you are thinking, well, blue eyeshadow should bring out my blue eyes. Wrong! It takes away from your eyes, and if over-applied, it can make you look like a clown.
Eyeshadows come in creams, powders and pencils. Personally, I prefer using the powdered kind because it is efficent wet or dry, and it is easier to remove. I find that creams go into the creases of your lids, and feel gooey and uncomfortable all day long. Pencils tend to hurt your lids when you apply them, and although the color is bold, it is more difficult to remove.
Eyeliner
It is important to only apply the eyeliner to the the bottom of your eyes (by the bottom lashes) and at the base of your lids (by the top lashes.) Over-applying eyeliner can make you look like a raccoon, and age you.
Liquid eyeliner is much trickier to apply, but it appears smoother longer than a pencil does. You have to have a very still hand, and a lot of patience when applying eyeliner, especially the liquid type. One slip of your hand and you could ruin your entire face.
Brown and black are the only two shades I would recommend buying, seeing how all other colors make you look like a four year old who has gotten into her mother's make up drawer.
Mascara
Mascara opens up your eyes and draws attention. There are two basic types of mascara, waterproof and regular and unless you cry a lot or are in the water constantly try to stick with the normal mascara because water proof mascaras can be difficult to remove.
Always apply mascara in a stationary position. Never apply make up on a bus or in a car because if you poke yourself you can scratch your cornea. Mascara is easily contaminated by bacteria which you definately don't want in your eyes. Discard mascara after four months use or when it begins to get dried out or clumpy.
When applying mascara, try to only dip the brush in once per eye. Then, when you go over the eyelashes again, you can dip it once more for both eyes. Doing this prevents you from getting clumped lashes.
Never pump the brush in and out of the container, it makes bubbles on the brush, which in turn causes clumps on your lashes.
Again, brown and black are the only two colors I would suggest you buy mascara in.
The Hair
It is important to wash your hair atleast three times a week, otherwise your hair will get oily, and will appear greasy. Each time you bathe, make sure you thoroughly clean your hair using both shampoo and conditioner.
In case you were wondering, conditioners moisturize, reconstruct, detangles and protects your hair.
If you are going to get your hair cut, and you still are unsure of what you want, ask us. Post a picture of your current cut (down loose, we want to see) and tell us what you think you want to get done. Also, make sure you tell us what type of hair you have (pin straight, natural waves, thick, etc) it will help us advise you on what type of cut to get. (Example: people with curly hair are usually not advised to get a razor layered cut, it is only for being with pin straight hair.)
Also, if you are wanting to dye your hair, post a picture of your current hair color (make sure you are not wearing make up.)
Remember, with drastic color changes, you may find that the make up you have doesn't suit you and your new hair.
Caring For Dry Hair.
Dry hair is caused by heat, an open cuticle, chemicals applied to the hair, and poor maintenance.
1) Less or no heat. When blow drying, use a cooler setting and do not blow dry until the is completely dry.
2) Use acidifiers. Acidifiers close the cuticle down and lock in moisture. Acidifiers have a pH of 2.5 to 3.5. They have a lower pH than hair does in an aqueous solution.
3) Color, perms, relaxers, and other chemicals are sometimes a necessary evil. They rob the hair of humectants. Humectants attract and retain moisture (water) in the cortical layer of the hair. Try to use low ammonia -low peroxide color. Do not leave neutralizer on too long with perms. If possible avoid relaxers.
Wardrobe Tips.
Have you ever walked by a store in the mall and stopped to admire the gorgeous new skirt that they have in? Or maybe you've been walking down the street, and saw an outfit that you absolutetly hated?
Or are you wondering how that new top you bought looks on you?
Ask us.
If you're planning on going on a shopping spree soon, first post a picture of yourself (a full body shot) in your favorite outfit. We can recommend stores that you can visit, styles you should try out, and colors that you should get your clothes in.
For example, if you have blonde hair, and are a bit heavier set, you should try shirts like this or like this.
Or, if you're wondering what would look great with shirt, perhaps we could recommend a necklace or a headband.
All right girls, start posting!
