    My town...

Well , it's Ballina , it's the biggest town in Co Mayo , Ireland. It's got some decent shops , a more-than-decent school , pretty cool places to hang out and has an annual music and arts festival that pwns all.

So I'd say it's pretty okay.

To the two people who asked where I lived:
I live in Somerset, in the Exmoor hills.
With all the wild fucking ponies and shit.
But I go to school across the county.
People assume it's nice here, and I suppose the hills are okay, but once you're in the towns, the cities and whatnot, you realize how horrible England is.
I'm probably just over reacting, but it's because I lived in Hawaii and Berlin for a number of years, and I've never really adapted.

No, I see where you're coming from, the towns here are vile, I mean, I detest Yarmouth, but in the same breath I love it, but I guess I've been here seventeen years and haven't lived anywhere else.

Some parts of this country are nice, but the majority of the towns and cities I've visited are bad.

Onlt I haven't seen one as bad as Yarmouth.

You're only a few county's away from me. :cute:

I've been to Somerset a few times. It's pretty much the same as Cornwall, only prettier. It's not too bad, though I imagine moving from Hawaii to here must have been one helluva culture shock.

The south is apparently the best place to live in England, though personally I'd rather live in London. I'm moving there as soon as possible, then abroad when I can afford it. I don't want to live in England for the rest of my life.

I mean, who would want to live in England?
Fifth larges economy in the world, nice health care system, with gross domestic income waywayway over the E.U. average in the big conurbations and culture that is just beyond words.

    It must be horrible.

But I guess I don't like the English language enough to want to move there and that makes me a bit of a hypocrite. XD

^That's the mechanics of living here.

I guess to some people it seems "omg amazing", but I've lived here my entire life which is why it seems so bland to me.

And really, thinks aren't that great here. We're struggling at the moment, our next door neighbour is 92 years old and probably going to die soon because she can't afford heating or anything else, there's been problems with banks, the house-market is going to shit, etc. etc.

    Small. Very small.
It's an entire province where everyone knows everyone they all like to talk about eachother. It's also really green...And filled with fields, golf courses, and 1 1/2 very small cities. Very touristy. Most people are nice and friendly, the other ones really aren't. At all.

Lame city. Really lame, I kid you not. I miss my old town a lot sometimes.

It's a damn ghosttown here. If it was more like my old town, it would be fantastic. Uptown is just epic fail (happens to be where I live x.x); it's quiet and suburban and filled with old people and annoying elementary school kids. Downtown is pretty different; it's a cozy little neighborhood with pretty houses and some wealthy people, curvy road. It's also where all the drinkers, smokers, potheads, druggies, and whatever few hobos we have are. Midtown (from like 22nd-34th) is...blah. Nothing. Empty. Useless. Waste of space. Just stores, on the main street that is. I really don't like this town. We have a damn park that's 11 blocks long and like 4.5 wide. Huge and useless. It's so very lame. I can't say it enough.

Off topic but in the area I live some elderly couples can't afford proper food on the pension with the rates. It's really horrible. Some eat dog food because they can't afford anything else.
I know an elderly couple that got kicked out, don't know what happened to them.....:shifty

    Cornwall's nice (:
I liked it there, last time I went.
Moving from Hawaii was a huge culture shock, and I still haven't fully adapted.
London is classed as the south.
Up north is Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool..etc..

I'm moving back out to Hawaii when I'm older, for definite.
    I hate it here.

Yes, we have a great healthcare service.
Yes, we're reasonably wealthy. [Well.. not so much now due to credit crunch]
But the goverment spend the money on things not worth while.
And just because we have a nice health care service and whatnot, it doesn't make it a nice place to live.
Every night on the news there are stories of mass stabbings, shootings etc..
I just don't like it here, at all.

^ For definite, especially considering the credit crunch.
I know that the majority of countries today are suffering financially, but England's doing really badly.
And the health care system isn't going to save us from that.
Sure, England looks lovely on TV, right?
But unless you're here, and you're hearing of another stabbing every night, and you're living in these vile towns, you don't know jack about this country.

You know at first I was angry when I read the replies. You're really ungrateful bastards. Now I'm not anymore, but I don't take that back.

After the revolution in '89 and until 2001 Romania was sunk in an economic depression worst than that of the 30's. It's impossible to imagine how poor everyone was. It scares me to think back on it. I guess the only way to see how it was would be to watch a movie but even so. I remember how my mom had to reuse coffee because we couldn't afford buy it. And we only bought shoes once a year. And our school had no heating. I remember waiting for hours to buy gas because you could barely find it. And everyone was so poor.

It's hard to imagine, to understand. Just as hard as it is for me to imagine how things were before '89 during the communist regime, then things were 10 times worse.

Of course your standard of living is ignorable if it's always been high. You can go on believing that England is a horrible country to live in because it has bad weather and some thieves.
    I understand.

btw. nowadays, everyone's economy is going downhill, everyone's affected by the credit cruch. ^_^

^I understand somewhat where you're coming from, and England as a whole, in theory, is a good place to live.

But some people seriously struggle. The people on the dole are better off than those who actually bother to work because all our money is going towards supporting them. My mom can't afford heating, electric is only used if we really need it (the lights are never on, we use candles mostly, and I actually have to pay her some of my wages each week to go towards electric so I can use my laptop), we can't afford gas, my brother has been missing out on school because my mom can't afford his bus fair.

We have the NHS, but it's not necessarily a good quality of health care. I've had medical problems for years, and need an operation, but I'm not allowed to have to until I'm in absoloute agony and it's absoloutely necessary.

This isn't just because of the credit crunch, either. Things have been difficult for my family for as long as I can remember.

It's all well and good for those in the cities, or those on the dole.

But just because England as a whole is a good place to live, doesn't mean it is for everyone who lives here.

Actually I would completely and utterly disagree.

Seriously, I don't get what is so awful about Britain. Everybody is allowed their opinion and all, but I'm very surprised at the outpouring of dislike here. As for the knife crime, does it not occur to anyone that it may have been slightly overdone by the media, given that violent crime as a whole has been falling for years? As for the economy, yes, things are bad, but things are bad for America, the EU and the rest of the world too. That is why it is called a 'global' economic crisis. Do the government spend money on stupid things? Possibly, yes, but what?

So I'll get off my soapbox now. But I just felt the need to defend my country :shifty

That people on unemployment benefit earn more than people who work isn't true for the majority of cases. I feel almost as if it is some myth cooked up by the right wing tabloid press. If you don't like the fact that our money goes to supporting them, then that is unfortunate, but we do have a government in this country who are (sometimes) committed to social justice. But redistribution of wealth is essentially a socialist idea, and I know that not everyone agrees with it. I just happen to, myself.

I also like to think that I know the NHS pretty well, given that my medical notes are heavier than several bricks and I've been acquianted with hospitals since the age of 4. Some aspects of it just don't work, I admit that. But it has saved my life, and when I've really needed medical care, I've always been seen to very quickly.

    And England isn't my country.
But I really do hate it, but that's my opinion.
And I respect everyone elses completely.
Perhaps you'd understand if you've gone from peaceful sunsets in Hawaii to knife crimes, shooting and abuse in England.

    Ungreatful bastards, huh?
    I don't see why I'm being ungreatful.
I appreciate the fact that I have a roof over my head, and all that shit.
But to be honest, I despise of England, and I'm entitled to my opinion.

^Well as I said, it depends from person to person. Where some people are, it's probably great for them. Here, for me, it's not so good. I know people who are on the dole who are better off than us. I don't have a problem with supporting people who need it. But there are people who don't, and it annoys me that we have to pay to support them when they're quite capable of supporting themselves.

As for the NHS, for me, they've been useless. It's taken 7 years and my dad forking out a fuck load of money to go private to even get anywhere close to the bottom of my problems. I don't know whether it's just bad luck or what, but it's just a shitty situation.

England as a country is not a bad place. But for me, where I live, I wouldn't exactly give it any merits. It's why I want to move to London, or another big city before i move out of England; to see if it's better in the cities than it is here.
