Paper or Computer?

  • Danny Hampstead:
When I first started writing, I preferred paper over the computer. There was just something about having my ideas written down on paper that I liked. (Maybe because I could have with me at all times.)

Nowadays, though, I prefer a computer over paper becase, for some reason, my words and ideas seem to flow better when I'm able to just sit down and let my fingers go to work. Plus, if something doesn't work, I don't have to go erasing and rewriting and all that jazz.

But I still write rough drafts and outlines on paper from time to time, like if I'm trying to get through writer's block or if I just want to brainstorm, but I don't feel like firing up the computer because it's quick and simple, and because I always have paper and a pen with me. And I keep a few notebooks by my bed, just in case I get an idea in the middle of the night and I want to jot it down so I don't forget it.
Me too 100%. But I think with writing on notebook paper I just like starting a new notebook, fresh start/clean page so I would revise my stories over and over again which required a new notebook everytime,,,XD
But now I do it over the computer.

  • I use both. I write on paper in class whenever I think of ideas and then I'll type them up on my computer later. If I'm at home relaxing, however, I'll always go to the computer first simply because it's faster. My hand tends to cramp up after a while when I write by hand anyway, haha. But I do love the feel of writing on paper and crossing things out and seeing the editing process in front of my eyes. It's a good feeling.

  • It's sort of a tie with me. I like to write in a notebook first because I like thinking things up as i go along and I can actually carry my notebooks with rather than my computer.

But then I also like to type on the computer too. I can edit and add things on the fly.

I mostly write in a notebok thouugh. I have two plastic tubs fill of notebooks and papers that have accumulated over the years. XD

  • I prefer the computer, because I can write more freely and I feel that the quality of my writing is better on the computer. But I also do like to write on paper, just in case I don't have the alternative of the computer.

  • Stories that come out on paper are plot-based. Or suck.
    For me.
This is a fact of life I've learned to deal with.
I cannot write proper moment-in-time character driven stories unless it's on the computer.
My fingers can only keep up while typing.

  • I plan and start the idea off on paper, but I always write the chapters out on the computer, it just saves paper and I already have enough notebooks on my bookshelf

  • dru's wandering.:
But I do write long-hand [always pens and college-ruled paper] for some stories.
Me too. At least for my chaptered stories. For oneshots and such, I prefer to type on my iPOD... Shifty

  • I generally write on the computer more, but I like how my stories flow when I write on paper. Everything seems to connect better.

  • I always prefer the computer. I can type so much faster than I can write, and my hands don't get tired. Smile. Also, it's easier to change things, sometimes several times over, without having loads of scribbles and crossings out all over your work, and it's easy to add in extra bits half way through.

  • I do notes and character/chapter plannings generally in whatever school book I have on me, but then write it all up on a computer. It's a lot easier for me, as I have really bad handwriting, and it's just easier.

  • I use both :)

  • Computer. When I write on paper, it takes me ages to get it copied up, and on the computer it's easier and neater and you can just go back and correct things without making a mess. And you can't lose it like you can lose paper, unless of course the computer does something bad.

  • Computer. I feel that the words flow easier here as I'm not concentrating on pencil movement, penmanship and space proportion. It's also easier to erase and delete via computer, and it's not as messy as paper.

If I'm wondering outside, paper will do.

  • When I first started writing, the computer was my writing home. Now, I write more on the computer but only after several years of writing on notebook paper. I have entire 1 and a half inch three ring binders filled up with writing that will never see the daylight of Mibba or a publishers office.

I prefer to write on the computer simply because it's easier to edit later on and it's a faster way to get my ideas down. My ideas flow to fast for my handwriting and so when it's finished it looks like "chicken scratch". It's horrible.

When I write on the computer I can keep up (most of the time) with the onslaught of imagination that I'm dealing with.

  • Computer, always. Mainly because I always change my mind and scribbled out writing bugs me so I have to re-write everything and spend my whole time re-writing one paragraph just so it looks neat.

Also, I type insanely quickly and it's easier to keep up with the flow of my thought because of that.

  • I can't use paper. I can't handwrite at all, actually, because I smashed my wrist and it didn't heal. I can't normally type for amazingly long either, but I can write all day if I wear a bandage and take breaks.

Honestly, though, I prefer a computer anyway. I can't write a sentence without chopping and changing it, and I'm always swapping things around in my paragraphs, or changing my mind about what I'm trying to say. I go into most of my stories writing blind, and make things up just off the cuff. Also, typing is faster. Writing things by hand is painfully slow.

  • Computer, mainly because my spelling can be awful at times. And I'm a complete scatterbrain, so I'd lose it all if I had several bits of paper, and my handwriting is barely legible anyway.

  • I rarely ever write on paper unless I'm somewhere without my laptop for a long period of time. Even without my laptop, during car rides, I'll start typing a chapter into my phone as a memo and when I get home I'll copy it into a word document. Other than that, my laptop's always the best way to go. I save the document every paragraph or so too make sure in case something happened, I wouldn't have to start all over.

  • Both I guess you could say. I like to get my initial idea down on paper first. Then I type it up and as I'm typing I start to change things around.

  • I use both.
I start character profiles and plots on paper, and when I'm at school I'll start writing and then when I get home I'll transfer what I have to the computer.
Even though more then half the time I loose the paper that I started on, or I just loose motivation to continue writing because it doesn't seem interesting anymore.
....I think its time to invest in a new method....
