Are 'Thank You' Comments Necessary?

I noticed alot of people had something to say about this in the "Things You Hate In Stories" thread, so I thought this would be a nice place to discuss leaving "thank you" comments.

Do you give a personalized thank you to everyone who leaves you a comment/review on a story or do you just leave a big one for everyone at the bottom of your A/N of the next chapter?

DO you feel offended if you don't get a thank you or do you feel excited to get one because it's an extra treat.
I, generally only give thank you's for really spectacular reviews that helped me alot or I could tell was really heartfelt. I appreciate every comment, but I just don't have time to answer them all.

Right now, I don't get a lot of comments, so I do give individual attention to each one. I appreciate people taking the time to read and comment on my stories. I make a similar gesture to thank them back. Most of them have had something to say beyond 'great job', so I have something to respond to.

I usually say thank you to my readers on the story's thread. :shifty
I didn't really know that people expected me to give them a personalised thank you.
I obviously appreciate comments and reviews and I think the people who actually read my stories know me well enough to know that I really am grateful.

I just try to keep up with posting the amazing comments on the Good Reviews thread.

I try to reply if people have questions about the story.

Certain people know how I feel about their reviews without my explicit thank yous.

For instance, kafka has a quote on my profile that will never go away and I messaged her for her opinion on a piece because I value it very high and I told her so. She doesn't kiss my ass when she reviews; she tells the truth, and I admire that.

When I started writing I was seriously so surprised when I got comments that I thanked every single person, every single time they commented, even if it was just a "Great update. more soon." I don't do that anymore, I just thank and speak to those who leaves somewhat interesting comments and maybe asks questions.

What annoys me is when I put a lot of effort into a review-like comment or ask questions because I don't understand something about the story/chapter and get nothing back. :(

If somebody leaves a long comment then I'll thank them for it.

    I feel bad, otherwise.

I send a thankyou to pretty much every comment and reply to any particular points or questions the person has.
I don't get an amazing amount of readers or comments so I usually value the majority of them highly.
Also because they always come from the few people who opinions really matter to me on here
It's only fair to them that I let them know that I'm glad my story was worth their time.
It's common courtesy in my opinion.

    I agree.
If someone has taken a great deal of time in reading my story and giving me a review, I feel it's only polite to thank them and answer any questions they may have.
Also, if they've paid me a huge compliment, I usually get so flattered and happy that I have to let them know how much it meant. :tehe:

That was possibly one of the nicest thankyou comments I've ever got.

But, generally, I don't expect any kind of comments back. It does feel good to know that people don't hate you for the comments you left on their story, but it's okay either way. I like to think that by questioning the story I'm making the author question themselves and that helps them improve. However, I do check the threads when I think the people might reply. Dunno, I like it when people say that my comments made them ... happy, or just that they found them useful. It makes me feel useful.

Sometimes if I'm really bored and want to start a conversation with someone I'll thank them for commenting. This is rare, though. I did it to every single commenter when I first started but now, not so much.

I don't really like it when an author thanks me after every update for commenting and then when I reply to them saying that they're welcome and ask how they are they ignore me. :|

I do thank people when I get reviews though. :D

I don't usually send Thank You comments out, unless I get like...a really long review (and I don't really get many of them).

But I also don't expect Thank You comments. It's nice, but I don't mind if I don't get one.

Well I don't get to many comments so really anything more then "Grate job!" I send a thank you.

As far as getting thank you comments I kinda expect them unless there story is really popular. Like one of my friend's has a story that I've been commenting on almost every chapter from the beginning so when she first started writing she sent me a thank you ever comment but when it got really popular she had to stop but she did dedicate a chapter too me as a over all thank you:)

I comment back if I've got the time, but if I don't...I don't.

I never expect comments back when I comment on someone's work. If I do, that's great. If I don't, that's not a problem. If I like the story, it won't stop me from commenting again.

I don't usually get a surplus of comments so I usually send personalized thank you's to people. But it's usually just a "Thanks for the comment I'm glad you like my story." I've found that it actually is how I found some of my good Mibba friends.

I don't usually comment on stories unless they're my friends and I can make a joke. Otherwise I've found that I don't really comment, so I don't expect comments back.

I don't get a lot of comments, maybe a maximum of 5 every time I post, so I usually say thanks individually.
Depends though, I'm more inclined to say thanks to a new reader, just to say hi, or to a friend of mine who also writes stories that I read... Ya know, just to start a general conversation.

Wow, I didn't know my post would start a whole new discussion. :XD

As I said, yes, I do send at least a thank you to each person who comments. I don't get a lot of comments at all, so I thank each one I get because they were nice enough to read and comment.

Most of the time, yes, I do feel offended if I don't get a comment back. Especially if it's a story that gets a lot of just "Wow that's so good MORE PLEASE?!?" type comments and I take the time to put some thought into the comment for the writer.

Since I don't get a lot of comments, I typically thank everyone who does comment by leaving a quick 'Thank you' on their profile page. I don't like to clutter my author's note with a ton of thank you's, and I think it's more personal if I comment on my readers' profiles. I know as a reader, I appreciate it when authors take the time to thank me for my comments, even if they aren't the most insightful.

I usually thank people in the authors notes, but if someone takes their time to write me a real review, I actually comment them back :tehe:

Emily leaves really long detailed reviews after she reads my story. So I like to send her a PM to thank her because she took all that time to write it. Plus that way I can discuss with her what she's said about my story. I think I did that last time.

But I don't really think it's necessary to thank every single commenter. It's a nice thing to do. But I'm pretty sure they already know you're thankful for their comment seeing as not many people leave comments anyway..
