Maybe it's not necessary, but I always thank people that comment and recc my work, because they didn't have to. They took time out of their day to comment and recc my story, so a 'thank you' in the author's note is the least I could do for them.
    I second this.

As a writer, when I update, I'm doing it quickly so I don't always have the time to specifically call out people that commented/recced the story but I do thank them in general in the author's note because I appreciate everything I get. As a reader, I don't really expect people to do it though. I think it's nice but as Ella said, it's not necessary.

I used to thank every single person individually, but lately I've mainly been individually thanking people who leave me things to work on because I feel like I should thank them for helping me and then just doing a general thanks in the a/n for people who have recc'd and left more general comments.

I never except someone to thank me, though. It's always nice when people do because I feel like they really appreciate it, but of course it's not necessary.

I tend to leave 'thank you's' for the readers who leave lengthy reviews; mostly because I'm grateful they've taken the time out of their day to read my updates, or because they've given me something to think about that I hadn't already considered.

Those usually make my day because I'm extremely happy that they feel so passionate about something I've written. In Love

If someone took the time to really review my story, I always try to thank them for it. I used to say thank you in my Author's note, but now I go to their profile to do it. Or I send them a message. Sometimes it does skip my mind, but I do try.

I'm not sure it's necessary to give a thank you to everyone who commented. I think it would get tiring to keep writing it out at the end of each chapter. I would usually just give a thank you in general, however if a particular comment was really helpful, I would give a special shout out for that person.

I don't continually write often or receive many comments so it's relatively easy for me to thank each comment that I receive. I don't, however, thank people in the Comments section or A/N of the story. Instead, I leave a comment on their profile to thank them. I might check out a story or work of theirs in return too.

I do think it should be common etiquette to thank somebody for reading, although if somebody only recommends the story then I may not notice like I would via notification if a comment is left.

I try to thank people individually when they comment on my stories because I guess it's just who I am, and I'm thankful. When people rec my stories even more I rec the story itself, I'm going to thank them in the first chapter's A/N.
