^ As could I. :tehe: However, there is much speculation over his death. I believe he was found collapsed by the side of the road, and by the time he was brought to a hospital it was too late to save him. Some believe he drank himself to death, others believe rabies. Amongst other theories, those are just the two I've heard the most.

What do you guys think happened?

How come there is such a mystery to his death?
I whole-heartedly believe that it was his brilliant, master-minded plan on how to score free booze that killed him. I mean, he was a writer so he had to go out in a "creative" way. Rabies is so cliche. Yawn

There's a mystery because nobody knows for certain what killed him.

There are too many variables. He was an unfamiliar town at the time, not around people he knew, and was found collapsed in the street. With medicine as it was in that time, the doctors attributed it to alcoholism but since then accounts of his death and his symptoms have been evaluated enough to cause skepticism on this.

When you think about it though, is rabies really so cliche? I don't believe I've read a single book in which the character dies from rabies. The black plague however...now that's a cliche. ;)

But didn't a lot of people die of rabies when the disease spread? A vaccine for it wasn't invented until 1885, 36 years after Poe's death. So I was just saying, him being a writer and all, his death had to be outside of the social norm at the time. That's what I meant about rabies being cliche, haha.

Possibly, I'm not familiar with the rabies disease so I honestly have no idea how deadly or how much it spread before a vaccine was invented for it.

Just because he's a writer doesn't mean he has to have this shocking, crazy death though. If he came down with a serious illness, I'm sure he would have wanted to get better but I doubt it was because it was too "boring" for his death.

Although I think the speculation on his death is perfect for Poe, since he's considered the Father of the Murder Mystery.

I love his short story, 'Tell-Tale Heart'. It inspired me to write a sequel to it.

I have an anthology of his work, and he was always a huge influence on my writing. I felt like I had a connection with his writing. Inspiring, his imagery is lovely, overall just amazing.

A Dream Within a Dream is my second all time favourite poem. I love it, beyond what words can describe.

    I like old Poe.

Despite my having a gigantic book of his works, I haven't really read more than a few poems and Fall of the House of Usher.
Oh, and my father bought me this comic book illustrating some of his stories.

Hopefully, I'll get around to reading them all one day.

I have a good few of his works, mainly short stories, but I love almost all of them and I've read a few of his poems, he was a genius!

I have a collection of his. I had it since I was little but I didn't ever read it because the front cover scared me. Thankfully I have been able to overcome my fear. One of my favourites is Eleonora because it's my name! (Well close - Eleanor...)

I've read several works of his, though unfortunately I can't name them off. But I, as well as my family, own several collections with his works in them. I've always found his works fascinating, even if I can't name them off right this very second.
