Other than in an emergency, are cell phones really necessary? Kids who have cell phones rarely get in an emergency moment;from the day they're born to their death, most people who have had cell phones don't get in an emergency.

Anyways,do you REALLY need them? Can't you just use your home phone? Unless you're a buisness person or something,I don't see them as being a nesessicity to children who're probably 5-15 years old.
I just see them as an expensive device (You have to pay around $60 dollars a month for them!) that makes corporations money.
    What do you think?

Nope, I don't need my cell phone. But I would hate not having it. I communicate with all of my friends on my cell phone through text messages/phone calls. I wouldn't be able to do that on a house phone.

The fact that 5-15 year olds have cell phones, I don't see the problem with it. Like you said if they're in an emergency the it's really necessary. I'd rather be safe than sorry...

    Now,onto the subject:
Texting--Why can't you just make a house call by talking?Texting is just like talking, only with words.I'm not saying words are a bad way to communicate, but I just don't see the difference.

Well, I don't know where you are, but I pay 15$ a month and I don't mind. Why? They're providing a service to me.

Yes, not everyone gets into emergancys, but to those who have/will/might, will wish they had a phone. Better safe than sorry.

I agree with Sara! It is always better to be safe than sorry.

What is so wrong with a cell phone company making money? I mean if you were working for a cell phone company you would want to product to sell, meaning both phone and service, because that would be your source of income.

People, well most people anyway, like texting because it can be done in situations when you cannot actually talk. Say you have to share a room with a sibling who is younger than you so they go to bed earlier than you do. You couldn't be talking on the phone while they were trying to sleep but you might be able to text. There are also people who, like myself, prefer to communicate without actually having to speak to my friends. Sometimes it is even easier to explain a situation that you have a hard time actually explaining because it upsets you that much. Then there is the fact that when you send a text message in a public place you can feel more comfortable knowing that the people around you don't know what you said.

They aren't really necessary but there are many things in life that we feel we must have that we don't really need.

You can't call a friend on the home phone if you're not at home...and if you wanted to call them right then and there [even if it's not an emergency] how exactly do you propose using the home phone is going to be convenient?

The whole point of a mobile/cell phone is convenience.

Cost really depends on the plan you're on or whether you are using a pre-paid system.

The idea of a mobile phone is very, very useful.

However... wether or not you can play Tetris or look at your facebook status on your smartphone... it's drifting from a convienence to a toy.

What's your problem with cell phones? They might not be "necessary" to you, but other people like to have them.

    They're convenient.

I don't see what your deal with them is. Whatever it is, it's irrelevant, because people will continue to have them regardless.

One day,I was on the bus,and someone next to me was saying to her freind,"I can't live wtihout my cell phone. It's impossible.I need it to live!"

And that got me thinking.I came to the conclusion: It's worthless, really. It's nice to have, but you can live without it.So I posted this to see what other people thought.

Anyways,to answer your question, the problem I have is most kids say they can't live without their cell phones. Not all,but most. And I have a problem with it because it disgusts me that we live in such a technological age where people say they NEED their Wii's or they say they NEED their iPods (Yes,I have one,but I don't NEED it to live).

So overall,I'm just disgusted with cell phones.

Some people NEED cell phones. Sure, some teenagers use it as a toy or recreational purposes, but others use it for work too, etc.

It gets things done when one's not at home to use the home phone. Sometimes you need to call someone right at that particular moment and you can't do that without a cell phone. What if a child gets hurt at school and the parent/guardian is out doing errands and the school can't contact them because they're not at home? What then?

To some people especially with hectic jobs that require being on the phone a lot and to people with children, it's a necessity.

Did you read any of the rest of my post? I said if you wanted to call them right where you were at that moment, you can't just wait until you got home. It would be inconvenient. Times were when I didn't have a mobile, I'd be like...damn...I really wish I could talk to my friend right this very moment because I need someone to talk to.

I mean of course I could have just resorted to talking at the wall...but hey...I'm not a crazy person.

As to using a home phone, many teenagers spend hours on the phone which then means parents can't use the phone for other more important [business bills etc] uses. And they end up paying for two hour long calls that they didn't make. Better the child have a mobile that perhaps they pay for themselves. So then whatever price of calls is up to them and not the parent.

I don't use a home phone. So my cell phone is my primary phone. I won't pay for a home phone because I have no need. Why pay for two phone lines when a cell phone is portable and much more convenient than a home phone?

Landlines are so much cheaper. And my mobile sucks, if people ring me, unless I'm in a virtually silent place I won't be able to hear a word they say. Still, that's just an issue I have with my particular mobile, if it worked then I'd have no complains with mobile phones whatsoever.

Woah, expensive contract. I'm pay as you go, I've spent like £30 in the past six months.

Cell phones are easy if my dad is in a meeting and I have to tell him to pick me up in an hour or something, because he doesnt have to leave the room to go and talk to me, sending a quick test makes it much less of a distraction for people around you.

With me, it just makes me feel more secure. I am extremely paranoid. With me, I fear that the one time that I don't have my cell phone I could end up with a broken down car in the middle of nowhere. Also, say, by some crazy chance, that you're at a gas station. There comes in a robber and is holding up the register. You're in the back. You don't have a cell phone. You can't call the police. So the robber could kill the clerk, take the money and run off. Meanwhile, if you have a cell phone, you could call the police and, sure, they may not be there in just enough time, but they'll be a lot closer than if you had to wait for the robber to leave then you had to go find a pay phone.

Not necessary. Neither are underwear, cool shoes, MP3 players, a cool paint color for your car, or air conditioning.

Underwear is necessary. It's a cleanliness issue if you don't have it on.
And in the summer, air conditioning is necessary.

Yes,some people do need cell phones for work. That is the only time when cell phones are a necessity. Other than that, they're pretty much useless.
