Mibba's Photography Contest Winners

While Mibba is a creative writing site, we enjoy having a particularly creative userbase. Mibba is home to musicians, painters, knitters, graphic designers and of course, photographers. The Mibba Magazine recently held a photography contest where users were asked to submit original, unfiltered photographs. We received almost thirty submissions, all of which were outstanding in quality.

Our winning photograph was taken by Airi. The banner in the photo reads "From the ashes, we have risen," a quote sure to inspire some amazing stories in September's writing contest. Airi’s photo was taken in San Francisco, California on May 1, 2012, at a vacant building owned by the Catholic Church. The building was the site of an Occupy San Francisco protest on May Day, and Airi believes that the photo captures the sense of hope in the protestors that day, with the very memorable quote scrawled on the banner. When commenting on the quote on the banner, Airi says:

“The reason the banner plays on a biblical feel is because the building is owned by the Catholic Church and we were trying to make them happy…. The organizers went with it because they thought that using a "Christian theme" with the banners would help us appeal to the church and maybe even convince them to let us stay. Didn't work though but it was a nice try. The banner brings with it a weird yet interesting combination of Christianity and anarchism.... Which doesn't make too much sense in retrospect but it sure is an interesting and funny combination if you ask me.
