“I live for the rust of the razor,

I lust for your kisses,

But this sin isn't enough for me.”

"Can I See Your Battle Scars?" Is a Free-Verse poem that takes on a very large issue that many of us deal with; addiction. Addiction always seems to be a very relatable topic because many of us have one, some healthy and others not so healthy. "Can I See Your Battle Scars?", focuses on the struggles that addiction can bring to us. This poem’s focal point would be the addiction to cutting and the longing one has to keep cutting. Addiction is a very serious issue and this poem captures that essence very well.

This poem has been constructed in such a way that the reader is able to really picture and feel the person’s addiction. The idea of battle is also brought through in the poem, first off it is in the title of the poem and the word battle appears throughout the poem as well. However, it is much more than just the word battle that is brought forth to the reader; it is also the idea of the battle with addiction in terms of feelings and emotions. The diction in the poem was very cleverly selected in order to bring this idea out, for example “I long for the emptiness,/But hate myself with each slice of skin.” The idea of longing for something, but hating it as well makes the struggle a very prominent theme throughout the entire poem. Another instance where struggle is shown clearly is when the lines “I can't help this addiction,/But you can't help me,” appear, this is suggesting that though the person suffering can’t help themselves the person they want the most in their life cannot be of aid to them either. This feeling is very common when someone is dealing with an addiction.

"Can I See Your Battle Scars?", is a poem that is sure to leave a mark on whoever reads it. Extremely well written, thought out and captivating from the first line to the last. It is a poem that cannot be forgotten and will truly make you feel something.
