Mibba's Thoughts: Original vs. Fanfiction

Since Mibba is a creative writing site filled with both original and fan fiction, many Mibbians have opinions on both types of writing. In this week's edition of Mibba's Thoughts, Mibbians discuss original fiction and fan fiction.

I really have no problems with either genre. Sometimes I get a story idea and it just doesn't work with original characters. Sometimes the story is suited better to fanfiction.

Personally, as a writer, I'd be flattered if someone wrote fanfiction of my characters. Even if it was some out of the ordinary crackship. Actually, I think I would prefer crackships. I'd like to see how creative people can get while staying, for the most part, in character.

I prefer original fiction, but I read fanfiction too, though not as much. All the plots seem to be identical, and I find that really boring. though I guess you could say the same for some original fics too.

-Carpe diem;

I've gotta say, I love reading fanfiction because it's a fun and easy read and has some comedy and drama to them and it's just a nice little escape from reality kind of story. I enjoy original fiction as well, because it can be the same thing, but with fanfiction, it's interesting to actually picture a band member or someone doing what the story says, sometimes it makes for funny mental images. I enjoy writing original fiction more though, for reasons others have said. I think there's more freedom to it.

-Filthy Animal

I find people undermine the originality of FanFictions, to be honest.

-Damon Salvatore;

Story type doesn't guarantee story quality. Just because something is original fiction doesn't mean it's automatically the best story ever written, and just because something is fanfiction doesn't mean it's automatically shit. I've read well-written original fics and well-written fanfics. I've read shitty fanfics and equally shitty original fics.
